Abstract:
In this study, a manufacturing process for glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP) laminates was developed to improve volume fraction of fibers and mechanical properties. The manufacturing process is combination with wet lay-up and vacuum curing under atmosphere pressure for production of large and complicated structure as a leisure boat and so on. Several kinds of GFRP laminates were produced to consider optimum conditions of the process from viewpoint of volume fraction of fibers and mechanical properties. Volume fractions of fibers in GFRP laminates were measured and cross sections were observed by an optical microscope. The volume fraction in the GFRP laminate made by the suggested method was improved to 41 %, although the one made by conventional wet lay-up method was 17.7 %. Because a lot of large voids included in the laminates were drastically decreased due to the methods. For each laminate, three-point bending test was performed to measure elastic modulus and fracture toughness. Elastic modulus was improved from 5.39 GPa to 8.91 GPa with high volume fractions of fibers. Fracture toughness was improved from 8.19 MPa m1/2 to 16.6 MPa m1/2. Therefore, it was obtained that the method combined with wet lay-up and vacuum curing is easy process for manufacturing large and complicated structure to improve excellent mechanical properties and accuracy of structural shape.

Abstract:
This study presents a novel method to fabricate high-quality, large composite parts which can be used in a wet lay-up/vacuum bag (WLVB) process. The new method utilizes a commercial lifting magnet, which is commonly used for transporting ferrous plates, to apply a magnetic consolidation pressure on the WLVB composite lay-up. The pressure is applied on a large area of the laminate by slowly sliding the magnet over the vacuum bag surface, which leads to an improved laminate quality. When further improvement is desirable, multiple passes of the magnet can be performed, where each pass successively compacts the lay-up. To explore the feasibility of implementing this technique, random mat and plain weave glass/epoxy laminates were fabricated, and their properties compared to conventional WLVB laminates. The effects of the number of moving passes of the lifting magnet on the laminate microstructure and properties are also investigated. As a result of multiple passes, the fiber volume fraction in random mat and plain weave laminates increases to 34% and 53%, representing 80% and 16% improvements, respectively. In addition, the void volume fraction reduces almost by 60% to a very low level of 0.7% and 1.1%, respectively. Consequently, the flexural properties considerably enhance by 20–81%, which demonstrates the potential of the proposed method to produce WLVB parts with substantially higher quality. It is also shown that there exists an optimal number of passes, depending on the fabric type where additional passes induce new voids as a result of excessive resin removal.

Abstract:
This dissertation is the result of a research carried out on the simultaneous flexural and shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams using a hybrid solution with CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers): flexural strengthening with CFRP laminates applied according to Near Surface Mounted (NSM) technique; shear strengthening with U-shaped CFRP wet lay-up sheets (discrete strips) applied according to the Externally Bonded Reinforcement (EBR) technique. Regarding shear strengthening, the performance of an anchoring technique of the CFRP wet lay-up sheets extremities was evaluated. This research starts with the presentation of a literature review on the current state of knowledge about the use of CFRP composite materials in the strengthening of RC structures, with a special focus on the flexural and shear strengthening of RC beams. Then, the experimental program carried out in the present dissertation is described. This experimental program was carried out in order to determine the feasibility and performance of a hybrid solution using CFRP for the strengthening of RC beams that consists on the flexural strengthening with NSM CFRP laminates, on the shear strengthening with discrete strips of EBR U-shaped CFRP wet lay-up sheets, complemented with an anchorage system of the extremities of the shear strengthening. The results obtained are analysed in terms of the load carrying capacity improvement provided by the CFRP hybrid solution, the failure modes and the efficiency of the CFRP hybrid solution. Finally, the main conclusions of the study and some contribute suggestions for the future developments are presented.

Abstract Taking advantage of the convenience created by computer technology and Internet enhances the instructions of many subjects. They are also the inevitable future trend. Interactive web-page assist instruction indeed benefits acquisition of sports skills. This research is intended to discuss how the instruction effects differ from interactive web-page instruction, sequential web-page instruction and traditional instruction in terms of cognition, movement performance and movement quality of ordinary lay-up shot in basketball. Thirty ten-years-old elementary school students were randomly selected from fifteen classes and the subjects were assigned to interactive web-page instruction group, sequential web-page instruction group and traditional instruction group. The initial test was conducted at the beginning. After five teaching sessions equivalent to 200 minutes, they were then tested again. Thereafter, the testing results were analyzed by adopting ANOVA. The analysis concludes: 1. In terms of learning in basketball cognition, interactive group is better than sequential group and traditional group. No significant difference is noticed between sequential group and traditional group. 2. In terms of learning in movement performance of ordinary lay-up shot, interactive group is better than sequential group and traditional group. No significant difference is noticed between sequential group and traditional group. 3. In terms of learning in movement quality of ordinary lay-up shot, interactive group is better than sequential group and traditional group. No significant difference is noticed between sequential group and traditional group. In the interactive web-page assist instruction, learners are situated in an environment of multiple feedback design where they can repeatedly look into problems arising from movement learning. Through two-way communication between learners and computers, messages can be delivered and received simultaneously. Any differences among individual learners can be easily accommodated. Thus, learners’ interest in learning and will of persistence will be promoted. This in turn affects learners’ learning results in sports skills.

Abstract:
The Ottoman reforms of the mid-nineteenth century accelerated the process of opening up Syria to European travellers and traders, and gave Syria's Jews access to European Jewish communities. The resulting influx of Western ideas led to a decline in the traditional economy. It also allowed for the introduction of Western education, influenced the structure and the administration of Jewish society in Syria, and changed the balance of the relationship between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Initially Syria's Jewish communities flourished in these new circumstances, but there was a developing recognition that their future lay overseas. After the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, the bankruptcy of the Ottoman Empire in 1875, and the suspension of the Ottoman constitution in 1878, this feeling intensified. A process of decline set in that ultimately culminated in large-scale Jewish emigration. Thereon, the future for Syrian Jews lay in the West, not the East. This book covers Jewish community life, the legal status of Jews in Syria, their relationship with their Muslim and Christian neighbours, and their links with the West. It draws on a range of archival material in six languages, including Jewish, Christian Arab, and Muslim Arab sources, Ottoman and European documents, consular reports, travel accounts, and reports from the contemporary press and by emissaries to Syria of the Alliance Israélite Universelle. Rabbinic sources are particularly important in opening a window onto Syrian Jewish life and concerns. Together these sources bring to light an enormous amount of material and provide a broad, multifaceted perspective on the Syrian Jewish community.

Abstract:
This book follows up on recent findings that modern postural yoga is the outcome of a complex process of transcultural exchange and syncretism and digs even deeper, looking to uncover the disparate but entangled roots of contemporary yoga practice. In doing so, it proposes that some of what we call yoga, especially when it comes to North America and Europe, is only slightly genealogically related to premodern Indian yoga traditions. Rather, they are equally if not more grounded in Hellenistic theories of the subtle body, Western esotericism and magic, premodern European medicine, and late nineteenth-century women’s wellness programs. Marshalling these under the umbrella category of “harmonialism,” the book argues that they constitute a history of analogous practices that were gradually subsumed into the language of yoga. This allows us to fundamentally recontextualize the peculiarities of Western and especially certain mainstream American forms of yoga—their focus on aesthetic representation, their privileging of bodily posture and unsystematic incorporation of breathwork, and above all their overwhelmingly privileged female demographics. The initial chapters lay out the basic shape and history of these concepts and practices, and the later chapters explore their development into a spiritualized form of women’s physical culture over the course of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including the ways in which they became increasingly associated with yoga.

Abstract:
The twentieth century was studded with extraordinary achievements in medicine, science, technology, and space. Yet, this century was the most violent in history, killing an estimated 30 million people in cold-blooded genocides and, in wars, an estimated 187 million. There was not a single year in the hundred-year span when there were no significant wars. In each chapter I have chosen several men and women, many not well-known, on whom I focus a bit more than other historical actors. They reflect the spirit of their times, though their approaches and contributions are distinctively nuanced. Existing in a climate primed for war and violence, they, like everyone else, had to decide where their source of political identity lay and, when a decision was necessary, where their political allegiance would fall: To their own lives as individuals in a specific locality? Or to a particular nation? Or to the larger global community? Given that this allegiance has been much discussed during the last half of the century up through today, to what geographical level do we see world citizens committing their allegiance? That answer will be a key determinant of the future. This chronological narrative also traces other crucial twentieth-century developments: women and their professional and social roles, goals, successes, and setbacks; the powerful forces of race and ethnicity; the role of identity; environmental issues, including atomic energy and the sustainability of natural resources; the causes and changing nature of wars around the world; and the historical roles of contingency and memory.

Abstract:
For anyone interested in wildlife, birds, wilderness areas, parks, ecology, conservation, environmental literature, and ethics, the name Aldo Leopold is sure to pop up. Since first publication, Aldo Leopold: A Fierce Green Fire has remained the classic short, inspiring biography of Leopold--the perfect companion to reading his ever popular A Sand County Almanac. Winning numerous awards, this comprehensive account of his life story is dynamic and readable, written in the context of the history of American conservation and illustrated with historic photographs. Marybeth Lorbiecki has now enriched A Fierce Green Fire in a way no other biography on Leopold has, adding numerous chapters on the ripple effects of his ideas, books, ecological vision, land ethic, and Shack, as well as of the ecological contributions of his children, graduate students, contemporary scholars, and organizations--and the wilderness lands he helped preserve. Lorbiecki weaves these stories and factual information into the biography in a compelling way that keeps both lay and academic readers engaged. In the introduction to this edition, Lorbiecki makes it clear how much better our lives are because Leopold lived and why today we so radically need what he left us to bring about paradigm shifts in our ethical, economic, and cultural thinking. Instead of losing relevance, Leopold's legacy has gained ever more necessity and traction in the face of contemporary national and world challenges, such as species loss and climate change. Even the phenological studies he started at as a hobby are proving valuable, showing the climatic shifts that have occurred at the Shack lands since the 1930s, recognized by the plants and animals.

Abstract:
DDT Wars is the untold inside story of the decade-long scientific, legal and strategic campaign that culminated in the national ban of the insecticide DDT in 1972. The widespread misinformation, disinformation and mythology of the DDT issue are corrected in this book. DDT contamination had become worldwide, concentrating up food chains and causing birds to lay thin-shelled eggs that broke in the nests. Populations of many species of predatory and fish-eating birds collapsed, including the American Bald Eagle, Osprey, Peregrine Falcon and Brown Pelican. Their numbers recovered spectacularly in the decades following the ban. During the campaign DDT and five other insecticides were found to cause cancer in laboratory tests, which led to bans of these six pesticides by international treaty in 2001. This campaign produced lasting changes in American pesticide policies. The legal precedents broke down the court "standing" barrier, forming the basis for the development of environmental law as we know it today. This case history represents one of the greatest environmental victories of recent decades. DDT is still "controversial" because it has been deceptively interjected into the "climate wars." This campaign was led by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), founded in 1967 by ten citizens, most of them scientists, volunteers without special political connections or financial resources. Their strategy was to take environmental problems to court. There were many setbacks along the way in this exciting and entertaining story. The group was often kicked out of court, but a few determined citizens made a large difference for environmental protection and public health. Author Charles Wurster was one of the leaders of the campaign. The first six years of EDF history are described as it struggled to survive. Now EDF is one of the world's great environmental advocacy organizations defending our climate, ecosystems, oceans and public health.

Abstract:
TOWARDS THE NEW LIFE Theology and Importance of Christian Initiation for the Life of Faith The book is in equal parts a presentation and an invitation. The subject matter of both is the mystagogical initiation leading to the personal encounter with God and eventually to the union within the Church in Christ, which happens initially and particualry in the sacramental liturgy. Mystagogy was the essential experience of life in the early Church and now is being so intensely discussed and postulated by the ecclesial Magisterium and through the teaching of the recent popes and synods. Within the ten chapters of this book the reader proceeds through the aspects strictly associated with Christian initiation, noticeable in catechumenate and suggestive for further Christian life. It is not surprising then, that the study begins with answering the question about the sense of dealing with catechumenate at all. The response developed in the first chapter covers four key points: the contemporary state of our faith, the need for dialogue in evangelization, the importance of liturgy in the renewal of faith and the obvious requirement of follo- wing the Church’s Magisterium, quite explicit in the subject undertaken within this book. The introductory chapter is meant to evoke interest in catechumenate as such and encourage comprehension of its essence, in order to keep it in mind while planning contemporary evangelization. For doing this with success and avoiding pastoral archeology, we need a competent insight into the main message and goal of Christian initiation. Catechumenate is the first and most venerable model of formation and growth in faith and therefore worth knowing. The second chapter tries to cope with the reasons and ways of the present return to the sources of catechumenate with respect to Christian initiation understood to be the building of the relationship with God. The example of catechumenate helps us to discover, how to learn wisely from the history. This would definitely mean to keep the structure and liturgy of catechumenate as a vehicle of God’s message, which must be interpreted and adapted always anew and with careful and intelligent consideration of the historical flavour on particular stages within the history of salvation and cultural conditions of the recipients. For that reason we refer to the Biblical resources and to the historical examples of catechumenate including its flourishing and declining periods, after which we are slowly approaching the present reinterpretation of the catechumenal process enhanced by the official teaching of the Church. As the result of the latter, particularly owing to the Vatican Council II, we are now dealing with the renewed liturgy of baptism displayed in two liturgical books: The Rite of Baptism for Children and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This version for adults is the subjectmatter of the whole chapter, in which a reader can find theological analyses of the particular rites as well as numerous indications for improving one’s life with Christ in the Church. You can find interesting associations among the rites of initiation themselves and astounding coherence between those rites and the sacraments of the Eucharist, penance and other sacraments, which simply means the ordinary life of faith. Deep and convincing theology of the process of initiation proves the inspiring spiritual power of the initial and constitutive sacraments of baptism and confirmation, which may seem attractive not only for catechumens but also for the faithful baptized in their infancy, and even more, since they might have not yet had a chance to see what a plausible treasure they have been conveying in their baptismal personality. How much challenge for further and constant realization in life may offer these introductory events of Christian initiation, yet not sufficiently appreciated by those who have already been baptized and confirmed! We all should submit to permanent re-evangelization according to this primary pattern, which always remains essential and fundamental. Very typical and very post-conciliar approach to Christian formation appears in the communal dimension, which guards and guarantees the ecclesial profile of initiation and prepares a person to be a living member of the Church. The sixth chapter of the book is dealing with ecclesial issues in liturgy. They refer to comprehending the word of God, especially in the context of liturgy, which brings about a peculiar theological sense to it and giving a special character to proclaiming the Gospel, which the Pope Francis calls “liturgical proclamation”. The ecclesial premises influence the responsibility for the fact of accompanying the candidates, who aim at becoming Christ’s disciples. As the Church is teaching also in the theological and pastoral introduction to the RCIA, this is the duty of all Christians, which means: priests, religious and the lay, because the Church is one organism in whose womb the new members are conceived and raised. As this fact is strongly claimed by the Church the method of initiation arises to great importance. The seventh chapter is dedicated to the analysis of the catechumenal method stemming from Christ’s pedagogy and His mystery of Incarnation introducing a very important issue of implementing the Divine into the human. The chapter concerning this method opens a more practical part of the book. The crucial message of it is to make mystagogy a natural and obvious method which is the way of building bonds with Christ in the community of the people who already have these bonds and who are eager to tighten them and are aware of the beauty and necessity of closeness with Christ. Christian initiation is the process of entering the Kingdom of God and meeting Christ up to the union with Him – not so much learning dogmas and moral requirements. This is a special time when candidates-catechumens-elected mature in love and in their attitude to Christ and people, which results in prayer and new way of life. As in the past catechumenate nowadays inspires the faithful in their imagination of love and mercy as well as reminds us about various important details of the paschal way of life, which constitute our baptismal vocation, but may be forgotten and now with the help of catechumenate can be recognized anew, while accompanying adults on their catechumenal way. The book is meant for those who are already involved in catechumenal process and are responsible for the rites and formation as well as for those who are interested in what the Church is offering to all who consciously decide to know and follow Christ. You can learn from this book, what is the nature and specificity of the method suggested by the Rite itself for guiding people to God the Saviour and to the community of His people. The aim of the study is to present the universal way of evangelization, which was suggested and revealed by God in His pedagogy, particularly through Jesus Christ and smoothly adopted by the early Church. This way, which can be called a method, is so complete, substantial and clear that it deserves rediscovery, description and promotion, which has already started in the Church’s teaching by making direct references to such categories as: initiation, catechumenate, liturgical formation, the rereading the Mystery of Christ, the living participation in the Mystery and faith nourished by the Mystery. The most engaging point with Christian initiation is the fact, that this seems to be the most effective way of reviving the parish, taking place on the solid and safe ground of liturgy with the most convincing and objective fact that is our baptism and our new identity born in baptismal regenerating bath. On the grounds of our personal relationship with God and our Christian vocation we can become active apostles of Christ. Evangelization begins with ourselves and in our hearts. Thinking about the Church’s mission, we should have in mind our personal mission within the Church and we should refer to it’s roots – first to our immersion into Christ’s death and resurrection and to the anointment with the Holy Spirit. In this Spirit we have all been sent to follow Christ wherever He goes, not necessarily where we would like to direct our steps, but He would. Let us cling to Him and follow Him! Together with the constantly transforming and growing Church! Towards the new life!

Abstract:
The mochilla lay beside the migrant trail, an abandoned black daypack still heavy with goods. The Border Patrol agent carried it to the shelter of a corner of rocks, where no one could spot him while he searched it. He dug through the contents. There was a package of refried beans in gaudy plastic, a bag of instant oatmeal, fruit punch in a bottle too small to slake a serious thirst, and other convenience food. Also a half-pound or more of white grains in a punctured bag; the agent wet a finger and tasted: only sugar. Then he heard voices approaching and scrambled up the slope to hide in the brush. There were three of them: a rangy young man with a shadowy face in the lead, an older guy in a ball cap, and a pretty young woman with raven hair behind. They were Americans, not migrants or narcos. Their skin, their clothes, even their posture gave them away. They were too relaxed, too careless to be anything else. The agent stepped out from his hiding place. They slowed but did not stop. “You all out hiking?” “Yep,” said the young man with the shadowy face. “Where you from?” “Tucson,” came the clipped reply. Then the hikers, unsmiling and eyes straight ahead, passed him at a fast clip, the chill of the encounter resisting the afternoon heat, the desert absorbing the silence. The hikers had come from the direction of the Rat’s Nest, a maze of drainages half a dozen miles above the Line, and they disappeared toward Apache Pass—not the famous Apache Pass in the Chiricahua Mountains in eastern Arizona, but a lesser pass on the shoulder of Bartolo Mountain, well south of Tucson and only nine or ten miles north of Mexico. The agent knew they weren’t out for a hike. No one comes just to hike in the contorted and contested, bone-dry mountains along this stretch of the border. Everyone has a purpose. They come to smuggle or to be smuggled. They come to scurry in moonlight and to drag themselves under the blaze of the sun across dozens of miles of steep shadeless rock.

Abstract:
Chapter 7 explores the potential of audio as a learning platform. We lay the groundwork by looking at the historical relationship between spoken and written language, and at the evolution of recorded audio, from the phonograph up through books for the blind, books on tape, audiobooks, and podcasts. Compared with the research literature weighing reading in print versus digitally, relatively few studies have explored use of podcasts or audiobooks in educational settings, especially measured against reading equivalent written text. We review studies to date, distinguishing between audio files played alone (solo audio) and reading that combines listening to audio with following along in the text (audio + text). Simultaneous audio and text is a common technique with readers having learning challenges and with second language learners. Given rising use of video materials in education settings, we also consider research comparing viewing video versus reading text, and viewing video versus only listening to audio.

Abstract:
Don goldsberry had been speaking for only a few minutes at the Game Commission’s April 1972 hearing, and already Elizabeth Stanton Lay couldn’t believe her ears. Branding killer whales with dry ice? Burning their skin with lasers? Confining them to pools for research and profit? What kind of men were these? After listening to representatives from the Audubon Society, Friends of the Earth, and the Washington Environment Council voice their opposition, the sixty-year-old Lay rose to speak. “I have never before heard such a frank statement of what seems to me a totally inhumane attitude toward living creatures,” she declared. Marine mammals could do without the type of “research” Namu Inc. proposed. Whales were disappearing around the world, she reminded listeners, and the same could happen to orcas in Puget Sound. “When I was a very little girl, we used to see blackfish out in the bay, and we loved it,” she recalled. Now locals rarely saw the great creatures, except when men like Goldsberry trapped them behind nets. Lay was never one to stand idly by. Named after Elizabeth Cady Stanton, organizer of the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention on women’s rights, she would have made her namesake proud. Born in Tacoma in 1911, she had grown up in the nearby town of Rosedale on Henderson Bay and earned a history degree from Reed College in Portland, followed by a master’s degree in political science from the University of Washington. She studied in Geneva, worked as a journalist in Washington, DC, and served in the new Federal Security Agency during World War II. From the mid-1940s to the mid-1950s, she worked as a historian for the US military, living in Paris, Frankfurt, and Seoul and producing a two-volume account of the Berlin Airlift. By the time of the Game Commission hearing, Lay had retired to Rosedale, where she played the organ at her Christian Science church, promoted forest preservation, and fought to stop orca capture. Her interest in the issue may have started with young Ken Gormly’s 1968 account of the catch in Vaughn Bay.

Abstract:
The rapid growth in technology and the dynamism in our society today poses a lot of problems for Software Engineering practitioners. The result is a series of software development process methods that can be used to combat or meet up with the problems. What we can do is evolve, grow, and adapt to the changes that come along with development. This is the dynamism inherent in man—to adapt to change and improve ourselves and our existing systems—since the world is a far cry from what it was a few decades ago. On this basis lay the need to develop the model proposed in this chapter to meet the variations that exist as a result of technological development.

Abstract:
This paper presents the application of a new technique, Magnet Assisted Composite Manufacturing (MACM), to enhance the quality of composite laminates fabricated by wet lay-up/vacuum bag (WLVB) and vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). Towards this goal, a set of high-power, Neodymium permanent magnets, which are placed on a magnetic tool plate, is applied on the vacuum bag/lay-up. To further demonstrate the effectiveness of MACM, six-ply random mat, E-glass/epoxy composite laminates are produced under four processing scenarios: (i) Conventional WLVB; (ii) WLVB with magnetic consolidation; (iii) Conventional VARTM; and (iv) VARTM with magnetic consolidation. Applying magnetic consolidation pressure is found to be a convenient and efficient method for enhancing the overall quality of the laminates fabricated by WLVB and VARTM. For instance, in WLVB-MACM process, fiber volume fraction improves by 98% to 49% and void content reduces from 5% to less than 1.5% compared to conventional WLVB. These two factors lead to substantially increased mechanical properties of the WLVB-MACM laminates to a level comparable to those achieved by the higher-cost VARTM-MACM process.

These samples were experimentally investigated for their thermo-mechanical properties using Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), tensile testing and three-point bending techniques. The mechanical properties showed remarkable improvement with increasing MWCNT wt.% up to certain content. The results revealed that the addition of MWCNT fillers has no significant effect on the thermal stability of the composites.

Abstract:
The performance of filament-wound FRP composite is dependent on the properties of constituent materials (i.e. fiber, matrix and fiber-matrix interface) as well as on the manufacturing and design parameters (e.g. fiber lay-up, laminate stacking sequence, mandrel diameter, winding tension, winding time, fiber wet-out, etc.). In the first part of this work, we present a sensitivity analysis approach to ascertain the degree of influence of various mechanical and material design parameters on the structural failure of the composite laminated pipes. In the second part, sensitivity analysis results were used to design pipes with improved mechanical strength.

In ASME 2019 38th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2019-96006.

Abstract:
Abstract Two dynamic umbilicals in a tethered lazy wave configuration were required to be wet parked in an ultra-deep environment with a water depth in excess of 2900m. The close proximity to the pre-installed mooring lines, along with the in-place configuration requirements (seabed connection location, short seabed tether length, quantity of distribution buoyancy modules) made the design of a viable wet park configuration particularly challenging. Strong current was also a major driving factor. The speed and dominant directionality influences the umbilical hump excursion, the stability of the umbilical and potential interference between the umbilicals and mooring lines. Several different routes were assessed to overcome the key problems as part of the wet park engineering solutions. The installation of these umbilicals into their wet park configurations similarly presents a significant engineering undertaking. An innovative and unconventional solution was chosen for the design of the wet park. The configuration utilises an umbilical ‘cross-over’, which allowed both umbilicals to be laid perpendicular to the dominant current direction and clear of any interference risks. An installation methodology was developed to successfully hook up the tether and lay down the umbilicals. Custom components and installation aids were designed for this purpose.

Abstract:
As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Wind Partnerships for Advanced Component Technologies program, Global Energy Concepts LLC (GEC) has performed a study concerning innovations in materials, processes and structural configurations for application to wind turbine blades in the multi-megawatt range. Constraints to cost-effective scaling-up of the current commercial blade designs and manufacturing methods are identified, including self-gravity loads, transportation, and environmental considerations. A trade-off study is performed to evaluate the incremental changes in blade cost, weight, and stiffness for a wide range of composite materials, fabric types, and manufacturing processes. Fiberglass/carbon hybrid blades are identified as having a promising combination of cost, weight, stiffness and fatigue resistance. Vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding, resin film infusion, and pre-impregnated materials are identified as having benefits in reduced volatile emissions, higher fiber content, and improved laminate quality relative to the baseline wet lay-up process. Alternative structural designs are identified, including jointed configurations to facilitate transportation. Based on the study results, recommendations are developed for further evaluation and testing to verify the predicted material and structural performance.

Full text
Abstract:
A new nanocomposite is prepared by cold direct mixing. To investigate how this new nanocomposite behaves under low velocity impact loads, a set of plates with 16 layers and 65% fiber volume fraction is manufactured by vacuum assisted wet lay-up. The fibers have a plain-weave configuration, while the epoxy system is ARALDITE M/HY956. The nanoclay is an organically modified montmorillonite ceramic and it is dissolved into the epoxy system in a 1%, 2%, 5% and 10% ratio in weight with respect to the matrix. X-ray diffraction tests indicate that rather than exfoliated, these nanocomposites are mostly in intercalated form, with possible presence of immiscible nano systems at 10% concentration. The impact tests are based on the ASTM D5628-01 standard. For the 20 joules impact energy condition, the energy absorption by delamination increases close to 48%, while for larger energies, i.e. 40 and 60 joules, the average improvement into energy absorption is around 15%. Even for larger energies close to total perforation, i.e. 80 joules, the use of nanoclays leads to an average increase in energy absorption of close to 4%.

In ASME 2015 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
MEMS gyroscopes are being used in a variety of applications such as camcorders, vehicle stability control and game controllers. Sometimes they are used in harsh environments such as high levels of high-frequency noise. If the frequency of the noise coincides with the natural frequency of the gyroscope, the output of the latter is corrupted. Experiments were performed to demonstrate the effects of noise on MEMS gyroscopes. The focus of this research is to investigate a passive approach to attenuate the effects of noise on MEMS gyroscopes using microfibrous cloth. The candidate materials are made by intermingling and fusing micro metal fibers together using cellulose in wet-lay papermaking technique and sintering of the resulting product to remove the cellulose and bonds the metallic fibers. In this regard, four types of nickel microfibrous material were fabricated using three diameters of nickel fibers. The Delany-Bazley analytical acoustical model was used to determine the optimum acoustical properties of the material. The properties were then used to calculate the absorption coefficients of the microfibrous media. Enclosures were then designed and fabricated from these materials to evaluate the noise attenuation effects on MEMS gyroscopes. Acoustical tests performed in a reverberation room show up to 90% reduction in the amplitude of the effects of noise. The results from simulation modeling and from these experimental evaluations are presented and discussed.
