Processing of petrochemical compounds produces a large amount of wastewater. This wastewater consists of toxic (hazardous) materials that can not be discharged to the environment without treatment. As restrictive environmental constraints increase, new technologies are needed to treat those toxic materials before discharging them to the environment. Wet Air Oxidation (WAO) is one of these new methods.
This study casts light on the effect of initial pH on the WAO of benzene at different temperatures and pressures. It was found that at pH 6, a temperature of 260°C and a partial pressure of ox

The Wet Air Oxidation process has considerable attractions for the disposal of toxic organic wastes. In this thesis, a fundamental study is made of the mechanism of oxidation under wet air and related conditions of a series of well-defined substances known to occur as components of industrial wastes, and which are known to present difficulties in the Wet Air Oxidation process. In the initial stages, the oxidation of a series of simple alkylpyridines, namely 2-, 3-, and 4-methylpyridines, has been studied under simulated Wet Air Oxidation plant conditions in a laboratory autoclave operating at

Toxic contaminants in wastewater from industries have also been increasing therefore development of technologies to remove it have been a great focus of environmental research institutions. In this study, copper waste was recovered from electronic and elec

Mestrado de dupla diplomação com a UTFPR - Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná
The efficient treatment of waste plastics and pharmaceutical pollutants is of conspicuous environmental, social and economic benefits. Therefore, here it is approached the application of catalysts that can be efficient in mitigating both environmental problems. In this work, four different catalysts were prepared. Three of them were synthesized by co-precipitation of Ni, Al and Fe nitrates with different mass ratios (5%Ni:95%Al, 20%Ni:80%Al and 10%Ni10%Fe80%Al). The fourth catalyst was prepared by wet

Alternatives to deal with municipal solid waste (MSW), such as mechanical biological treatment (MBT) plants, are a trend. In these plants, the organic matter is digested by anaerobic bacteria, generating biogas and reducing the solid mass, generating simultaneously a solid compost and a liquid leachate as side-streams. The leachate has a complex composition and cannot be treated by conventional wastewater treatment methods, while the compost is mainly used as an agriculture fertilizer, but the amount produced is higher than its demand. This work deals with the valorization of compost to

In this study, the equity and effectiveness of waste load allocations based on different factors were evaluated by the proposed optimization models . In order to address the growing waste concerns facing South Africa, the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) published the National Waste Management Strategy in 2012. The ultimate aim of the strategy is to effect the realisation of the objectives of the National Environmental Management Waste Act (NEMWA). The NEMWA is a sector environmental law based on the waste management hierarchy and its provisions apply to waste management activities in all three government spheres amongst others. The NWMS provides for eight distinct goals with accompanying targets to be met by 2016. Some of these go

The Soutpansberg Coalfield has received comparatively less attention compared to other more notable South African coalfields. There is as a consequence very limited information in the public domain applicable to the geology as well as quality of coal in this coalfield, as a result there is no known study focused exclusively on the Mushithe coal occurrence.
