Wetlands and streams provide many ecosystem services, yet many of these services have been lost during the process of surface mining. It is often not practical to avoid wetlands and streams, and newer technologies such as large draglines have made it possible to mine through large perennial streams and their associated riparian wetland systems. Laws such as the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act and Clean Water Act require the restoration of these systems in approximately the same location and configuration as before mining, but do not address the long-term replacement of function.

Because rails are secretive and difficult to study, there have been few attempts in Indiana to determine the impact of wetland loss on the populations of rails and other marsh-nesting birds. Outplanting field trials were conducted to identify native wetland plant species that would be useful to coastal wetland restoration on Oʻahu. The effects of soil salinity and soil temperature, initial planting density, and removal of competition on survival and growth of outplanted species were examined. Abstract:
The purpose of my research was to determine if landowners in the Colorado River delta were interested in participating in a program for restoring wetlands on their lands. I interviewed 30 landowners along the river and 16 on the marginal areas of the delta Results show that wetland restoration in private and ejido lands is feasible in the Colorado River delta, Mexico. This restoration could be embraced and enhanced by the participation of local communities. Papyrus swamps form ecological buffer zones at the land-water interface, protecting lake shallows from sedimentation and reducing the risk of eutrophication in open water. Many communities living near papyrus swamps, particularly in East Africa, derive socioeconomic benefits from these highly productive ecosystems. Loss of the buffering capacity of papyrus at Lake Naivasha, Kenya, explains much of the observed increase in the lake’s trophic state.
