Abstract:
This article investigates why W. E. B. Du Bois combined existential, racial, and environmental themes in his essay Darkwater: Voices from Within the Veil. It analyzes how natural beauty gave rise to the combination of anti-racist protest and imported German romanticism in this work and highlights its potential contribution to a better understanding of the intersection of race, romanticism and modernism in the ecocritical tradition. It suggests that Du Bois’s explorations of the double environments of (black) Jim Crow and (white) national parks in the essay foreground practices of segregation across both natural and urban spaces.

Abstract:
The question whether there were modern ways of being religious, or religious ways of being modern, was significant to a variety of writers and artists. Homosexuals were particularly drawn to Catholicism, which is strongly associated with both sacerdotalism and aesthetically rich forms of worship (though baroque and modernist tendencies do not divide straightforwardly down confessional lines). Maurice Child’s Society of Saints Peter and Paul was the principal theorist of baroque Anglicanism, Martin Travers its most distinguished practical exponent. Among Catholics, the most significant in the creation of a modern baroque aesthetic are Canon John Grey, priest and former fin-de-siècle poet, and Fr Martin D’Arcy, who persuaded Lutyens to build Campion Hall as a Jesuit house of study in Oxford and filled it with an astonishingly eclectic accumulation of art.

Abstract:
The stages by which the Gospel and letters commonly known as ‘of John’ (as also of the Apocalypse, often assigned to the same author) became part of the canon are exemplary of wider canonical processes in the early church. While closely inter-related there are also differentiated patterns of recognition of these writings in different parts of the church and at different times. This chapter examines those stages with attention to the evidence of early Christian writings and to scholarly debate about it. More recent discussion has interrogated the nature of ‘canon’ in relation to other terms expressing authority, and also in relation to the range of actual textual practices and of the wider body of texts that flourished among early Christians.

Hellman, Samuel B. Learning While Caring. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190650551.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Learning While Caring is about what the author has learned during his half-century career as a cancer doctor. During this time, medicine has changed greatly. It has become more scientifically based, more institutionally located, and now comprises almost one-fifth of the US economy. Despite these changes, much remains the same, especially the primary obligation of the doctor to the patient. Also during this period, most of the developed world has recognized health care as a right for all its members. This has been resulted in greatly improved care for many, but not for all. For the last 25 years the United States has been experimenting on how this should be achieved, beginning with the proposed but not enacted Clinton Health Security proposal and currently with the Affordable Care Act. While efficiency and cost control are essential, cost cannot be the only parameter of success. Access to high-quality health care must be made available to all. Proper education for an informed public must include an understanding of the general principles of biology, while that of a doctor must result in a familiarity with the humanities and social sciences. An academic physician has three responsibilities: patient care, teaching, and research. These latter two, while essential, must not conflict, compromise, or limit the doctor-patient relationship. This book is about the author’s activities in all three endeavors. Since his specialty is oncology, this is the major subject, but most of the information is applicable to all caring physicians.

Gallagher, Edmon L., and John D. Meade. Latin Christian Lists. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198792499.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter contains texts, translations, and analysis of the nine early canon lists (Old Testament and/or New Testament) in Latin in probable chronological order: Muratorian Fragment, Codex Claromontanus, Mommsen Catalogue, Hilary of Poitiers, Jerome of Stridon, Rufinus of Aquileia, Breviarium Hipponense, Augustine of Hippo, and Pope Innocent I. The Latin West tells a slightly different story of the canon to the Greek East. Only Hilary, Jerome, and Rufinus present the OT canon similar to the Jews and the Greek lists, while Mommsen, Breviarium Hipponense, Augustine, Claromontanus, and Innocent present a wider canon, including the deuterocanonical books. The NT lists manifest dispute over the inclusion of Hebrews but generally include the Catholic Epistles and Revelation.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents Alice Walker's reflections on the America of her youth compared to the promise of the campaign, which reflects the view of many older African Americans who never expected to see the day a Black man would occupy the White House. She says that she is a supporter of Obama because she believes that he is the right person to lead the country at this time. He offers a rare opportunity for the country and the world to start over, and to do better. She expresses deep sadness that many of her feminist white women friends cannot see him and what he stands for. Cannot hear the fresh choices toward Movement he offers. That they can believe that millions of Americans—black, white, yellow, red, and brown—choose Obama over Clinton only because he is a man, and black, feels tragic to her.

Abstract:
In 1634 Fuller became the minister of the parish at Broadwindsor, in Dorset. This provided him the opportunity to know John White, the minister in nearby Dorchester. White, the spiritual and moral leader of the town became a pastoral model for Fuller. In this setting, Fuller wrote The Historie of the Holy Warre, the first English history of the Crusades. His use of medieval sources was extensive, and his analysis of the motives and tactics of western leaders is shrewd and persuasive. Elected to the clerical Convocation that met in 1640, during sessions of the first Parliament to be called in eleven years, Fuller dissented from the leadership of Archbishop William Laud, who sought to impose more stringent rules or canons on the Church of England. This Convocation, continuing to meet after Parliament was dissolved, passed canons whose legality was contested. War with the Scots ensued over religious issues, forcing the king to call what came to be known as the Long Parliament.
