This case allows students to hear the stories of convicted white collar prisoners from Germany and the United States and learn lessons from their mistakes. Prisoners provide details of their crimes, the resulting prison time, as well as life lessons they feel business ethics students should learn. Students are encouraged to identify anything they, themselves, might be doing that would put them on the path of illegal behavior and to consider mechanisms they can implement to avoid breaking laws. The case can be used in many courses, including Business Ethics, Managerial Accounting, Organizationa

Unlike historians, qualitative researchers’ engagement in studies in which archival sources form the core data corpus is less common than the exploration of newly generated data. Following scholars who have argued for secondary analysis of qualitative data, in this article, I illustrate how qualitative researchers might explore archival data methodologically. Examinations of archival records help us think about how research methods change over time and compare approaches to current practice. The rise in right-wing extremist offenses has become a significant global concern, particularly in the United States. These offenses are usually fuelled by radical ideologies such as nationalism and white supremacy, and have quadrupled over the past decade. Our analysis reveals that far-right extremist offenses in the U.S. have surpassed violence previously linked with jihadist-groups, with right-wing factions responsible for over 60% of extremist-related casualties since 2014. Moreover, the increase in these offenses is strongly corelated with a rise in immigration influx and demographic chan

Transportation equity is a vital but vague issue for planners and engineers in the United States, where mobility-based transportation planning has triggered the disproportionate distribution of benefits and burdens in the transportation system. Previously, transportation equity studies have evaluated equity using different transportation service metrics and socio-demographic factors. Job accessibility is one principal metric for transportation quality as it directly relates to a community’s economic prosperity. While most equity studies analyze aggregate accessibility for a single mode, our st

AbstractDrawing on the literature on bureaucratic discretion, this study conducts a large‐scale, nationwide causal analysis of the effects of body‐worn cameras (BWC) in the United States (US). It employs a staggered difference‐in‐differences (DiD) approach using 12 years of panel data (2008–2019) covering 697 local police agencies. The findings indicate that BWC adoption had no significant effect on White arrests but led to an approximately 5.5% decrease in Black arrests. Importantly, the reduction in Black arrests was concentrated in alcohol‐related cases, which involve considerable officer d

The threefold aim is to (1) establish the frequency of such rare cases, and (2) explore the extent to which status characteristics (beyond race, ethnicity or gender) are present for these rare events; and (3) offer social dominance theory as a viable explanation for the patterns found in the data. From the mid-twentieth century, state and public conceptions of deviance and crime control have turned increasingly punitive (Hallett 115; Hutchinson 138). In a Western context, criminal justice has long been retributive, prioritising punishment over rehabilitation (Wenzel et al. 26). Within that context, there has been an increase in punitiveness—understood here as a measure of a punishment’s severity—the intention of which has been to help restore the moral imbalance created by offending while also deterring future crime (Wenzel et al. 26). Introduction The city is one of the most common iconographies associated with film noir, particularly at night. For several noir critics, the city is an inseparable and determining element in the definition, narrative structure, and aesthetic of film noir. However, while urban spaces dominate classic imagery, noir has also engaged significantly with rural and small-town settings. These spaces challenge the presumed centrality of the city, revealing noir’s capacity to explore moral decay, isolation, and violence beyond the urban landscape. Abstract The research of a generation of economic and social historians has given us considerable insight into the occupational mobility experienced in the United States by immigrants in the first half of the nineteenth century. This work has shown that upward occupational mobility was infrequent during the careers of first-generation immigrants in the United States: no more than a third of immigrants who began their careers in the United States as unskilled workers in cities as different as Newburyport, Boston, Poughkeepsie, and South Bend were able to rise into the ranks of skilled or white
