Abstract:
Professor Li has taught botany since 1940 at University of Nanking, Nanking, China, and weed science at Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing, China, since 1964. He developed and taught the school's first weed science course and he presently teaches botany, crop plant anatomy, and weed identification and control. Under his direction, programs in weed quarantine and biological weed control have been instituted and supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Bureau of Education (present name: Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fishery). One of his prime targets has been the study of darnel and the biological control of dodder on soybeans. Professor Li is the supervisor of several graduate students for the Masters and Ph.D. degrees. While at Nanjing, he also has directed the establishment of the most complete herbarium of weeds and weed seeds in China. Currently, Professor Li is editing Weed Flora of China. In addition to publishing many weed texts and teaching short courses on weed identification and control within China, he is a member of the FAO Panel of Experts on Improved Weed Management.

Abstract Three structureless row covers (white, spunbonded polyester and two weights of white, spunbonded polypropylene) were evaluated for winter protection of container grown ‘Helleri’ holly (Ilex crenata ‘Helleri’), ‘Atropurpurea Nana’ nandina (Nandina domestica ‘Atropurpurea Nana’), Fraser photinia (Photinia × fraseri), and ‘Mohave’ pyracantha (Pyracantha Koidzumii × coccinea ‘Mohave’) relative to white copolymer film and white copolymer backed thermoblanket over quonset-shaped structures and an unprotected control. Air and rooting medium temperatures were monitored during the deployment period. Visual foliar injury ratings were taken immediately after treatments were removed and again four months later. Visual shoot injury ratings were correlated with the mean daily average and the mean daily minimum temperature of air and rooting medium within each treatment. Both polypropylene covers provided protection for plants in the interior of a consolidated group equivalent to white poly and the thermoblanket for all species except Pyracantha. Porous row covers are a feasible alternative to standard protection systems.

KJKS BMT is an institution that serves as an intermediary (Intermediary Institution) fi nancial, KJKS BMT third parties to channel the funds to the community. Among them is the fi nancing of profi t and loss sharing. The background of this study is that the factor of the customer, the bank and is a factor taken into consideration by the Bank to analyze the occurrence of fi nancing problems at BMT Artha Barokah. This study was conducted to determine whether the factor of the customer, the Bank, and infl uence the occurrence of fi nancing problems. This research is a fi eld research (fi eld reserch) with the data collection methods of documentation, because the data used in this research is secondary data obtained from customer data instantly fi lled. The analysis tool used is multiple linear regression testing using aberration test classical linear regression and statistical tests. The results of t test analysis showed that each of the independent variables signifi cantly affect the fi nancing problems in BMT Artha Barokah Yogyakarta. In the F test showed that the independent variables and external customers signifi cant effect, while the factors did not signifi cantly affect bank fi nancing problems. The determinansi coeffi cient (R ²) of 0.56, which means fi nancing bermasalahpada BMT Artha Barokah able to be explained by the independent variable of 56.1% and the remaining 43.9% is infl uenced by other variables outside this research model. Abstract:
A large amount of pteriomorphs of bivalve have been found in the Zlichovian–Givetian black mudstone-siltpelite in the trough in basin facies-zone of Luofu, Nandan, northwest Guangxi, South China. This fauna consists of 20 species, placed in 11 genera and 6 families, of which 1 family, 2 genera and 8 species are new. It has a very low diversity while compared with the contemperaneous fauna of Xiangzhou facies. This fauna is characterized by: a. Only 2 subclasses, the Pteriomorphia and Cryptodonta of 6 subclasses of Bivalvia were presented in the Nandan facies fauna; b. Among the occurred 6 families: Praecardiidae, Antipleuridae, Lunulacardiidae, Pterineidae, Posidoniidae, and Guangxiconchiidae, the Guangxiconchiidae (fam. nov.) is the most falourishing one. About 80% of individuals of bivalves belong to it. In contrast, the Pterineidae which was very flourish in the Xiangzhou facies, is represented by a small amount of specimens. In the generic level, the Guangxiconcha is mostly developed and distributed from Zlichovian to Givetian; c. This is a basically cosmopolitan fauna, and may compare with the contemperaneous bivalve fauna of the same facies of western Europe and North America. Among 11 genera of this fauna, 7 genera: Ptychopteria(Actinopteria), Cheiopteria, Pterochaenia, Posidonia, Lunulacardium and Buchiola are the cosmopolitan or basically cosmopolitan taxa, while Guangxiconcha, Nandannia and Opisthonia are the endemics to South China. 62% of the species are the endemics; d. This fauna is dominated by the small-sized, thin-shalled and fragile taxa. Except for Buchiola and Ptychopteria, most taxa are ornamented by fine concentrical line, or acrossed by very weakly radial line; e. About 54% of taxa and 90% of total individuals of this fauna may be the byssal attached epifauna, most of them may be the pseudoplanktonic bivalves.Seven bivalve zones of Zlichovian–Givetian of Nandan, Guangxi have been recognized, and compared with the associated tentaculitid zones.

Abstract:
French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy is acting uneasily when it comes to contemporary politics. There is a sort of agitation in his work in relation to this question. At several places we read an appeal to deal thoroughly with this question and ‘ qu’il y a un travail à faire’, that there is still work to do. From the beginning of the 1980s with the ‘Centre de Recherches Philosophiques sur le Politique’ and the two books resulting out of that, until the many, rather short texts he published on this topic during the last years of the century, the question of politics crosses very clearly Nancy’s work. He not only fulminates against the contemporary philosophical ‘content’ with democracy. Instead of defending a political regime, he wants to think the form of politics in the most critical and sceptical way. To Nancy, the worst thing we can do in thinking contemporary politics, is taking it for granted that we know what politics is about today, given the evidence of the global democracy. So to him, we almost have to be at unease when it comes to politics. On the other hand, in thinking contemporary democracy, the work of Claude Lefort is undeniably the main reference. Long before the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the upsurge of an all-too-easy anti-Marxism, Lefort articulated in a nuanced way the formal differences between totalitarianism and democracy. According to Lefort, the specific ‘form’ of democracy is that it never becomes an accomplished and fulfilled form as such. In a certain sense, the only ‘form’ of democracy is formlessness, a form without form. In a democracy, the place of power becomes literally ‘ infigurable’ as Lefort says. Democracy stands for formlessness or the relation to a void. Nancy objects so to say against a ‘Leformal’ conception of democracy – the empty place, the formless, the ‘ infigurable’ or ‘ sans figure’, the ever yet to come. … This conception of democracy would still be caught in the infinite metaphysical, dialectical horizon of immanentism, while it pretends to have already left that horizon behind it, presenting itself as the finite alternative to the infinite totalitarian politics. Democracy as formlessness is indeed no longer based on a metaphysical Idea, Figure, or Truth. We want to clear up the philosophical sky of Nancy’s remarks by confronting them with some thoughts of Lefort.

Bugleweed (Ajuga reptans) and variegated wintercreeper euonymus (Euonymus fortunei ‘Varietgata’) grown under 64% light exclusion were of acceptable quality while plants grown in full sun and under 47% light exclusion were of poor quality. Quality of Wintergreen Korean boxwood (Buxus microphylla koreana ‘Wintergreen’) grown under all production light levels was unacceptable after 15 weeks in the interior environment.

This qualitative-phenomenological study was initiated to explore and understand the lived experiences and different perceptions of parents on no-homework policy in Nangan Elementary School, Nangan, Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental. Subsequently, this qualitative exploration hoped to draw out conclusions on the perceptions of the parents. The data source in this study derived from seven (7) research participants for the in-depth interview and another seven (7) parents for the focus group discussion. The research participants of this study were the selected Grade Five to Grade Six parents in Nangan Elementary School who were usually having many assignments compared to lower grade levels. The following themes emerged from analysis based in the perspectives of participant interviews: no-homework policy can be optional; no-homework policy is unfavorable and unhelpful to students; no-homework policy causes students to become irresponsible; and no-homework policy causes less learning among students. Concerning the experiences of parents in dealing with the assignments of their children, five major themes were manifested such as: having difficulties in answering homework; being able to help children; having fun while doing the assignment; being unable to finish work or chores; and bonding opportunity. Moreover, the participants about their challenges in dealing with the assignments of their children, four major themes emerged: understanding how to answer the lesson; having balance and time management; giving encouragement; and having follow-ups and rules. Lastly, their suggestions as regards the no-homework policy revealed four emergent themes: parents should always be responsible and helpful to their children; parents should have time management and balance; teachers should give appropriate, simple and uncostly homework; and teachers should give homework to students for continued learning.

Successful application of molecular markers in marker-assisted pyramiding relies on effective determination of the target phenotype. In this respect, evaluation of the efficiency of markers for marker-assisted selection through cross-validation in different genetic backgrounds and in different populations is a crucial step. In the present study, the previously identified Arabidopsis-derived intron polymorphic (IP) markers At5g41560 and At2g36360, which were highly linked with AcB1-A4.1 and AcB1-A5.1, respectively, were validated in a set of 25 genotypes of Indian Mustard and in three different F2 populations. The relationships between the variation of PCR products of the two markers with the percent disease index (PDI) of the tested genotypes, and the co-segregation analysis of the markers with disease phenotype in F2 populations clearly indicated that At5g41560 and At2g36360 are genotype-nonspecific markers and are closely linked to white rust resistance loci AcB1-A4.1 and AcB1-A5.1, respectively. It also became evident from the present study that AcB1-A4.1 and an another white rust resistance locus Ac(2)t are likely the same gene locus.

Abstract:
The undertaken research replenishes the pool of knowledge about folklore texts and the functions of spellonyms as signs saturated with national and cultural meanings. The study establishes and compares linguistic and cultural characteristics of spellonyms in the onomasticon of Australian and Nanaian aetiological tales. The authors proposed a typology of spellonyms which includes 5 thematic groups: nominations of deities of different nature; nominations of celestial bodies transformed from representatives of the tribe; nominations of objects of worship and magical rituals; nominations of magical natural phenomena; nominations of magical creatures. The results of the research demonstrate a significant prevalence in the number of deity nominations among Australian spellonyms, while the majority of Nanaian spellonyms refer to magical artefacts. The research has also proved the utmost significance of the water element in the folk worldview of Australian Aborigines and the equivalent importance of the water, land and air elements in the Nanai folk worldview. The obvious preference in both folklore traditions is given to nominations of native origin transcribed into the language of translation. The structural types of spellonyms vary from group to group, with the majority of monolexemic nominations.

Abstract Cyclanilide (CYC), a plant growth regulator with cytokinin-like properties, was applied as a substrate drench to containerized woody ornamentals to determine its effects on plant growth. At 70 days after treatment (DAT) in 2005, drench applications of 50 to 1,000 ppm CYC had increased shoot development 7 to 74% for ‘Alabama Beauty’ sasanqua camellia (Camellia sasanqua ‘Alabama Beauty’), 63 to 205% for small anisetree (Illicium parviflorum), 21 to 74% for ‘Snow White’ Indian hawthorn (Rhaphiolepis indica ‘Snow White’), and 266 to 626% for ‘Sky Pencil’ holly (Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’), when compared to control plants. Shoot counts the following spring, 270 DAT, increased from 16 to 101% for sasanqua camellia, 42 to 158% for small anisetree, 121 to 241% for Indian hawthorn, and 33 to 167% for ‘Firepower’ nandina, when compared to control plants. At 30 DAT foliar injury to sasanqua camellia, Indian hawthorn, and small anisetree increased with CYC concentration, and application of 500 or 1,000 ppm CYC resulted in severe injury or death of small anisetree and ‘Snow White’ Indian hawthorn. At 75 DAT in 2006, drench application of 25 to 100 ppm CYC had increased shoot counts of Eleanor Taber™ Indian hawthorn from 100 to 218%, when compared to controls, and quality ratings were highest at 130 DAT in plants drenched with 50 ppm CYC, although foliar injury ratings increased with CYC concentration at 75 and 130 DAT. At 60 DAT in 2007, application of 10 to 40 ppm CYC had increased shoot counts for ‘Snow White’ Indian hawthorn and ‘Sky Pencil’ holly 100 to 182% and 22 to 78%, respectively, and 96 to 171% and 30 to 63%, respectively at 90 to 110 DAT. In both species, quality ratings at 160 DAT increased with increasing CYC concentration. Single CYC drench applications were more persistent than previously reported single spray applications, effective at lower concentrations, and promoted shoot production in a species not responsive to single or multiple spray applications (Nandina domestica).

When a Canadian exchange student returns home from a semester abroad in the capital city of China, she might tell her friends that she had Peking duck every day, but she would never, as a 21st-century liberal arts student, say that she stayed in Peking for a semester. Rather, she would say Beijing, as would most English speakers in the present day. But such discrepancies between English transliterations of Chinese words are far from uncommon. Is it the Nanking Massacre or the Nanjing Massacre? Who is the author ofTao Te Ching: Lao-Tzu or Laozi? What, then, is theDaodejing? This paper will focus on the English representation of Mandarin Chinese phonology, particularly the consonant sounds. The inconsistency of English transliteration of Mandarin is caused by historical exchanges and encounters between the British and the Chinese and a lack of a monolithic standardization of Mandarin. Paradoxically, while these transliterations attempt to unify and standardize themselves and the representation of Mandarin sounds, they simultaneously represent the concept of a diverse Mandarin.

In this study, taxonomic and phylogenetic analyses of Junghuhnia were performed. Three new species were characterised according to morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analysis using ITS and nLSU sequences. They are J. austrosinensissp. nov., J. nandinaesp. nov. and J. subcollabenssp. nov.Junghuhnia austrosinensis is characterised by resupinate, thin basidiomata with white to buff-yellow hymenophore, small pores (9–11 per mm), clamped generative hyphae possessing hymenial cystidia, ellipsoid basidiospores (2.5–3 × 1.7–2 µm) and growth on fallen bamboo or angiosperm branch. Junghuhnia nandinae is characterised by resupinate basidiomata with pink to salmon pores and a distinct white margin, clamp generative hyphae, interwoven tramal hyphae, ellipsoid basidiospores measuring 2.6–3.2 × 1.8–2 µm and growth on Nandina domestica. Junghuhnia subcollabens is characterised by resupinate basidiomata with pale salmon to brownish vinaceous hymenophore, small pores (10–12 per mm), generative hyphae with simple septa and clamp connections, interwoven tramal hyphae, lunate basidiospores measuring 2.9–3.4 × 1.6–1.8 µm and thriving on rotten wood of angiosperms.

Abstract:
Nandina domestica Thunb. (heavenly bamboo) is an ornamental plant that is widely planted in landscapes in California and other states. Since 1996, powdery mildew disease has been seen on outdoor landscape N. domestica in various regions of California (Alameda, Monterey, Riverside, and Santa Barbara counties). Symptoms consist of reddening of leaf and stem tissues colonized by the fungus and curling and twisting of infected leaves. The following observations were the same for all collected isolates. White ectophytic mycelium was observed on leaves and petioles. Mycelium on leaves was amphigenous, mostly epiphyllous, and effused or in patches. Hyphal appressoria were nipple-shaped to lobed and sometimes opposite in orientation. Conidiophores were cylindrical, straight, sometimes slightly flexuous, 22 to 32 × 6 to 8 μm in dimension, and followed by one to two shorter cells. Conidia were cylindrical, produced singly, and 27 to 42 × 11.5 to 14 μm in dimension. Fibrosin bodies were not observed. Conidial germ tubes were approximately twice the length of the spore, originated from the ends of the spore, and terminated in simple appressoria. Cleistothecia were not present. Based on these characteristics, the fungus was identified as Microsphaera berberidis (DC) Lév. (1). Pathogenicity was confirmed by gently pressing diseased leaves on leaves of healthy N. domestica plants. Plants were incubated in a humidity chamber at 22 to 24°C, and after 10 to 14 days, powdery mildew colonies developed. A voucher specimen was deposited in the University of California Herbarium (UC 1738622). Additional inoculation experiments showed that four other N. domestica cultivars were susceptible (Compacta Nana, Gulf Stream, Harbour Dwarf, and Royal Princess). Helfer (2) noted several possible candidates for the Nandina powdery mildew pathogen in the United Kingdom. However, due to the conidial characteristics of that fungus and the paucity of character descriptions for the several species mentioned, no species name was given to the Edinburgh isolate. In contrast, the mitosporic characteristics of our isolates fit the description for M. berberidis. This is the first report of powdery mildew on N. domestica in North America. References: (1) U. Eighteen Asian pear cultivars on Pyrus betulaefolia rootstocks were planted in 1990 at Washington State University's Royal Slope Research Unit in central Washington State. Annual trunk diameters have been measured since planting, and annual harvest records have been kept since 1995. The six cultivars with the largest trees, ranked in decreasing order of trunk cross-sectional area, were `Daisui Li' (144 cm2), `Ishiiwase', `Huhoot Li', `Shin Li', `Shinsui', and `Yoinashi' (123 cm2). The six cultivars with the smallest trees were `Twentieth Century' (91 cm2), `Chojuro', `Shinseiki', `Shinko', `Yakumo', and `Tarusa Crimson' (38 cm2). `Tarusa Crimson' was significantly smaller than all other cultivars. The six highest-yielding cultivars, ranked in decreasing order of cumulative yield, were `Daisui Li' (183 kg/tree), `Shinseiki', `Shin Li', `Shinko', `Chojuro,' and `Olympic' (107 kg/tree). `Daisui Li' had significantly higher cumulative yield than all other cultivars. The six lowest-yielding cultivars were `Yoinashi' (71 kg/tree), `Huhoot Li', `Tarusa Crimson', `Yakumo', `Shinsui', and `Nangon Li' (19 kg/tree). The six highest-ranking cultivars for cumulative yield efficiency were `Shinseiki' (1.6 kg·cm–2), `Shinko', `Chojuro', `Daisui Li', `Tarusa Crimson', and `Olympic' (1.2 kg·cm–2). The six least-efficient cultivars were `Ishiiwase' (0.7 kg·cm–2), `Yakumo', `Yoinashi', `Huhoot Li', `Shinsui', and `Nangon Li' (0.2 kg·cm–2). `Daisui Li' and `Tarusa Crimson' had similar, relatively high, cumulative yield efficiencies, but for different reasons. `Daisui Li' produced high yields on large trees while `Tarusa Crimson' produced low yields on small trees. In contrast, the relatively high efficiencies of `Shinseiki', `Shinko' and `Chojuro' resulted from high yields produced on small trees.

Abstract Five species of tropical and warm temperate shrubs, bush morning glory (Ipomoea carnea N. von Jacquin subsp. fistulosa (K. von Martinus ex J. Choisy) D. Austin), Indian hawthorn (Raphiolepis indica (L.) J. Lindley), tropical hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. ‘Brilliantissima’), jatropha (Jatropha integerrima N. von Jacquin), and nandina (Nandina domestica C.P. Thunberg), were grown in 2.8-liter (#1) black plastic containers at two contrasting nursery locations and regimes. In College Station, TX, plants were grown in full sun under high fertility conditions, while in Dallas, TX, plants were grown under 40% light exclusion and a lower fertility level. Plants at each location were sprayed to runoff, either once or twice, with a distilled water only control, a Latron B-1956 spreader sticker surfactant at 0.063 mg/liter (0.063 ppm) in distilled water, or cyclanilide [1-(2,4-dichlorophenyaminocarbonyl)-cyclopropane carboxylic acid] at 56, 112, or 223 mg/liter (56, 112, or 223 ppm, respectively) with the Latron surfactant in a distilled water carrier. Half of the plants in all treatments received a single application, while the other half received a second application two to three weeks later. Although growth responses and release of dormancy varied among species and with cyclanilide concentration, plants of most species had greater release of lateral buds from a dormant or quiescent state under the high irradiance and fertility conditions in College Station, compared to the lower irradiance and fertility conditions in Dallas. However, phytotoxicity symptoms as evidenced by lower quality ratings were also more prevalent in College Station. Phytotoxicity was moderate to severe on nearly all jatropha and tropical hibiscus plants exposed to cyclanilide. Toxicity symptoms and significant growth reductions were present on several species at 112 or 223 mg/liter (112 or 223 ppm, respectively). A second application usually increased the effects on growth responses at all concentrations and often induced phytotoxicity symptoms at 56 mg/liter (56 ppm). The disparate responses between the two locations suggest the importance of local growing conditions on the potential efficacy and predictability of responses to cyclanilide applications.

A 24-month experiment was conducted to study the effects of shading levels on the foliage color changes in Fire Power Nandinas. This popular ornamental shrub is the dwarf form of the Heavenly Bamboo, Nandina domestica. It originated in New Zealand, and has vivid green leaf color in the spring and summer months that changes to a fluorescent red as winter approaches. In this experiment light was limited by covering the plots with black woven shadecloth of 43% and 78% shade, while allowing the control plots to receive full sunlight. Fifteen shrubs from each plot were randomly selected and 10 leaves per plant in each treatment were taken at 28-day intervals. The leaf color was recorded using a camera attached to a microscope. The results from this study indicate that changes in leaf color may be affected by the change of the seasons. The level of light/shade that the plants receive may also affect leaf color. The control group turned a bright fluorescent red, the 43% shade turned a deep red, and the 78% shade remained a deep green with few leaves turning red. Based on the different hues observed, this research indicates that limiting light has a direct effect on leaf color in this species. The correlation between the amount of sunlight received and the season of the year are the two factors that determine the degree of color change in this ornamental shrub.

Eight species of container-grown woody landscape plants received a single foliar spray of 0, 25, 50, 100, or 200 mg a.i. ASC-66952 ·liter-1 on 13 June 1990. (ASC-66952 is a proprietary chemical being developed by ISK-Biotech.) Axillary, rhizomatous, and total shoot numbers of `Harbour Dwarf' nandina were increased with increasing concentrations of ASC-66952. Relative to those of the control plants, axillary shoot numbers were increased from 350% with 25 mg·liter-1 to 950% with 200 mg·liter-1, while rhizomatous shoot numbers were increased 144% with the lowest concentration and 477% with the highest concentration. Growth indices were decreased from 2.1% with 25 mg·liter-1 to 9.7% with 200 mg·liter-1. Branching and growth indices of other species tested were minimally affected by ASC-66952 application.

Abstract A wild-type selection of heavenly bamboo (Nandina domestica) and ten cultivars were evaluated for plant performance, growth, flowering, and fruiting in north and south Florida. Onset of flowering generally began by March and April in south Florida and 4 to 8 weeks later in north Florida. Fruit was first noted 8 to 16 weeks after most selections began flowering. Landscape performance and fruit production varied widely among taxa and locations. The dwarf selections ‘Filamentosa’ and ‘Firepower’ failed to flower or fruit in either location; while the medium-sized selection, ‘Moon Bay’, did not flower or fruit in south Florida, and the medium-sized selection, ‘Gulf Stream’, flowered but did not fruit in south Florida. Large-sized selections produced more fruit than did dwarf and medium-sized cultivars. Greater plant survival with generally heavier fruiting was observed in north Florida than in south Florida. In north and south Florida, ‘Monum’ and ‘Compacta’ produced more fruit than did the wild-type selection. Seed viability was fairly consistent among cultivars, ranging from 73 to 86%.

Summary Modifications in growing techniques can affect the yield and nutritional quality of various cultivated plants. Among them, the use of biostimulants is environmental friendly method of stimulating crop productivity, stress resistance, and affecting yield or chemical composition of the plants. The aim of the investigation was determining of the effect of biostimulant treatment on yield and its quality of carrot grown for summer harvest. The experiment was carried out in 2009-2011 in the experimental station of the University of Agriculture in Krakow, south Poland. Two experimental factors were taken into consideration: (1) cultivar: Nandrin F1 and Napoli F1 (2) dose of Aminoplant (foliar application): 1.5 and 3.0 dm3∙ha-1 and control (without Aminoplant). Total and marketable yield, root length, its diameter, leaf mass and leaf : root mass ratio were assessed. The dry matter, soluble sugar, carotenoids and nitrate ions contents were analyzed as main determinants of carrot nutritional quality. Aminoplant influenced not only carrot productivity, but mainly chemical composition of the roots. The present results also suggest that carrot reaction to biostimulant treatment was depended on a cultivar more than on environmental conditions in particular growing seasons. The significant effect of Aminoplant in a dose of 1.5 dm3∙ha-1 on the yield of roots and leaf rosette mass of ‘Nandrin F1’ appeared only in the first year of the experiment. Spraying with Aminoplant in a dose of 3.0 dm3∙ha-1 significantly increased the soluble sugars content in carrot roots of both cultivars but only in 2011. Dry matter content was also affected by biostimulant treatment mainly for ‘Napoli F1’, which showed the lowest dry matter content when sprayed with Aminoplant in a dose of 1.5 dm3∙ha-1. In 2010 control plants contained the greater amount of carotenoids, while in next year roots of plants treated with Aminoplant in a dose of 3.0 dm3∙ha-1 had more these compounds. The significant effect of Aminoplant on nitrates content in carrot roots was observed but were not repeatable in the experimental years, so different climatic conditions modified carrot reaction on biostimulant spraying.

Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were used to evaluate genetic similarity and interrelationship among 104 plum (Prunus L. spp.) and related accessions from the Chinese National Germplasm Repository for Plums and Apricots and the Tianshan Germplasm Repository for Wild Fruit Resources, including six plum species (Prunus salicina Lindl., Prunus simonii Carr., Prunus ussuriensis Kov. et Kost., Prunus domestica L., Prunus cerasifera Ehrh., and Prunus spinosa L.), two related species [apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) and nanking cherry (Prunus tomentosa Thunb.)], eight putative hybrids between plum and apricot (plumcot), and six accessions of wild European plum (P. domestica). Out of the 42 ISSR primers, 12 were selected, which generated 103 markers in total, 99 of which were polymorphic. Possible accession-specific ISSR bands or patterns were also found. Some possible synonyms or homonyms were clarified or discussed, and closely related accessions such as bud mutants were discriminated. Based on the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) analysis and principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) using the Jaccard coefficient, two different dendrograms were constructed—one including accessions grouped by species and one with all 104 accessions—and a two-dimensional plot was obtained. Three groups were formed in both dendrograms and PCoA plot: Group I including apricot (‘Yinxiangbai’) and plumcot types; Group II containing Asia-originated diploid species [e.g., P. cerasifera, P. ussuriensis, P. tomentosa, and Chinese plum-types (i.e., P. salicina and its hybrids)]; and Group III involving European-origin polyploid species (e.g., P. spinosa and P. domestica) and recently found wild European plum accessions in China. The dendrogram with accessions grouped by species implied that 1) plumcot types had closer relatedness with apricot than with plum; 2) P. simonii should be a variant of P. salicina while P. ussuriensis an independent species; 3) P. domestica was more closely related to P. spinosa than to P. cerasifera. Two accessions of European plum (‘89-7-3’ and ‘Wanhei’) were clustered into outgroups in the dendrogram with all 104 accessions, which could been grouped within Group III in the PCoA plot. The distribution of both European plum and Chinese plum-types across respective groups did not reflect the geographic origins. The present study also further confirmed that the wild plants found in Xinjiang of China were P. domestica.

Purpose This study aims to examine the problems encountered during the establishment of the Central Police Academy (CPA) under the Nationalist regime from 1936 to 1949. While the authoritarian party-state unified the police academies by forceful means, this catalyzed the cleavage between the schools of police studies and resulted in power struggles over police education, intellectual thought, collectivity and even the national reform of police administration. More than narrating the progress of power consolidation, this study attempts to identify the problems underlying the factional strife and to reveal the interwoven pattern of these power struggles, exploring the confusion regarding what the police is, a question that troubled Chinese policemen from the mainland to Taiwan. Design/methodology/approach This paper explains the emergence of the factional strife from the beginning of the preliminary growth of the Police Academies in Nanking and Chekiang. It widely makes use of the official archives from Japan Center for Asian Historical Records and Historica Academia to show the dynamic situation in police education and administration. Rather, the official publications of the Police Academies and their affiliated associations reveal the hidden political agenda behind a unified framework as the party-state claimed. Moreover, official gazettes, memorials and newspapers are also used to strengthen the core argument of this study. Findings This paper examines the impact of the factional strife between the police leaders Dai Li and Li Shizhen on the CPA from 1936 to 1949. It illustrates that the establishment of the CPA ostensibly unified the nationwide police force but triggered power struggles over the control of the police administration. More importantly, it also shows how the factions strove for larger shares of power under the supreme doctrines that Chiang Kai-shek and the party-state imposed. Originality/value The failure of police education to become powerful was a special case among other more typical institutions. The governors coercively merged the police academies and created robust conditions for growth under the shelter of state authority. The police force did not follow the same path of national monopoly as what recent studies found but drifted apart with its vested interests and incompatible beliefs. Hence, the greater the demand for centralized control by the state, the greater the tension of the factional strife.

Abstract Some ornamental plants important to the nursery and landscape industries escape cultivation, spread to natural areas, and become invasive, outcompeting native plants in those ecosystems. Development of sterile cultivars of these problematic species can be one way to continue their sales yet limit their invasive potential and protect natural areas. To maximize the economic (and ecological) impact of this approach, sterile cultivar research and development should directly address grower needs. We conducted a survey of southeastern US growers to quantify sales of five popular yet invasive ornamentals (Coral ardisia, Chinese privet, Japanese honeysuckle, Heavenly bamboo, and Mexican petunia). Firms ranged from small businesses to large operations with up to $30M in gross annual sales. Respondents expressed a largely positive opinion of sterile cultivar research (74%) and a willingness to sell the sterile cultivars once created. Most (40%) recommended that sterile cultivar research on Heavenly bamboo was most critical, while 30% suggested that Chinese privet was the most important research target of the five species. The industry's willingness to adopt sterile cultivars documented in this survey positions the southeastern US to lead development of sterile cultivars and reduce invasiveness of economically important plants; research and development will be most effective if guided by industry input revealed here. ABSTRACT The cytosolic iron/sulfur cluster assembly (CIA) machinery is responsible for the assembly of cytosolic and nuclear iron/sulfur clusters, cofactors that are vital for all living cells. This machinery is uniquely found in eukaryotes and consists of at least eight proteins in opisthokont lineages, such as animals and fungi. We sought to identify and characterize homologues of the CIA system proteins in the anaerobic stramenopile parasite Blastocystis sp. strain NandII. We identified transcripts encoding six of the components—Cia1, Cia2, MMS19, Nbp35, Nar1, and a putative Tah18—and showed using immunofluorescence microscopy, immunoelectron microscopy, and subcellular fractionation that the last three of them localized to the cytoplasm of the cell. We then used comparative genomic and phylogenetic approaches to investigate the evolutionary history of these proteins. While most Blastocystis homologues branch with their eukaryotic counterparts, the putative Blastocystis Tah18 seems to have a separate evolutionary origin and therefore possibly a different function. Furthermore, our phylogenomic analyses revealed that all eight CIA components described in opisthokonts originated before the diversification of extant eukaryotic lineages and were likely already present in the last eukaryotic common ancestor (LECA). The Nbp35, Nar1 Cia1, and Cia2 proteins have been conserved during the subsequent evolutionary diversification of eukaryotes and are present in virtually all extant lineages, whereas the other CIA proteins have patchy phylogenetic distributions. Cia2 appears to be homologous to SufT, a component of the prokaryotic sulfur utilization factors (SUF) system, making this the first reported evolutionary link between the CIA and any other Fe/S biogenesis pathway. All of our results suggest that the CIA machinery is an ubiquitous biosynthetic pathway in eukaryotes, but its apparent plasticity in composition raises questions regarding how it functions in nonmodel organisms and how it interfaces with various iron/sulfur cluster systems (i.e., the iron/sulfur cluster, nitrogen fixation, and/or SUF system) found in eukaryotic cells.

Abstract Background Oral lichen planus is a chronic mucocutaneous disease of uncertain etiology. Inflammatory cell infiltrate plays an important role in pathogenesis of oral lichen planus. It is said that hyperplastic epithelium is seen where the inflammatory cell infiltrate is mild while beneath atrophic epithelium dense inflammatory cell infiltrate is evident. Studies have shown negative correlation between thickness of the epithelium and thickness of inflammatory cell infiltrate. Morphometric studies in oral lichen planus are very scanty and have been performed using stage micrometer and eye piece graticule. Using Image Analysis Software can avoid inter-observer variations which has not been done till date. Aim and Objectives The present study aimed at evaluating thickness of epithelium and thickness of inflammatory cell infiltrate and to determine any existing relation between the same using Image Analysis Software. Other histopathologic features were also evaluated. Materials and method 58 confirmed cases of oral lichen planus from buccal mucosa were retrieved from department archives. 6μ thick sections were stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin. Six non-overlapping fields were selected randomly from each section and photomicrographs were captured under 4x objective using Trinocular Research Microscope. Morphometry was done using Image Analysis Software and data was stored in Microsoft excel for statistical analysis. Results In present study the mean of epithelium thickness was 281.2059 and inflammatory cell infiltrate thickness was 330.2540. An inverse correlation was observed. As the thickness of inflammatory cell infiltrate increased there was a decrease in thickness of epithelium (Coefficient -0.156). Conclusion Thickness of the epithelium may vary according to the site, however in this study all cases were from buccal mucosa. ABSTRACT Aim The purpose of this three-dimensional (3D) finite element study was to investigate orthodontic loading simulation on a single endosseous implant and its surrounding osseous structure, to analyze the resultant stresses and to identify the changes in the bone adjacent to the implant following orthodontic loading. Materials and methods Two models were constructed using finite element method consisting of endosseous dental implant and the surrounding bone. In the first model, the contact between the implant and the bone was simulated showing no osseointegration, while the second model showed 100% osseointegration. Simulated horizontal loads of 20 N, at 90° from the long axis, were applied to the top of the implant. The study simulated loads in a horizontal direction, similar to a distalmesial orthodontic movement. Results In the first model, the stress was mainly concentrated at the neck of the implant and at the closest surrounding bone. In the second model, the stress was chiefly concentrated at the neck of the implant at the level of the cortical superficial bone. The stresses decreased in the cancellous bone area. On the implant, the highest stress concentration was at the first cervical thread decreasing uniformly to the apex. The stress distribution on the mesial and distal sides showed that the maximum compressive stress was localized mesially and the maximum tensile stress distally. If both models are compared, it can be observed that the stresses were less and more evenly distributed in model 1 (initial stability) than in model 2 when osseointegration was assumed. Conclusion A lack of bony support for the implant represents an unfavorable situation from biomechanical point of view that should be considered and solved. As clinical problems mostly occur at the marginal bone region (bacterial plaque accumulation, overcontoured abutments, infections, osseous defects), attention should be focused on this region. Clinical significance When osseointegrated implants are primarily used as anchorage for orthodontic purposes and then as fixed prosthesis, the functional and structural union of titanium to bone should be preserved. The First National Exposition of Architectural Design (OPA, 22 January – 28 February 1951), housed in the Zachęta – National Gallery of Art building in Warsaw, was one of the most widely advertised events of this kind. Its discussion exposes the peculiar atmosphere of these events, the strategies of persuasion and instruction as employed by the organisers in relation to ideological and aesthetic issues, and the reactions of the architects participating in the debates, who generally tried to avoid the aggressive tone of the polemic. In addition, the primacy of technocratic economics, which was later to become one of the key elements of policies concerning the construction industry in the People’s Republic of Poland, was fi rst revealed at the OPA, if only still in the background. The exhibition at the Zachęta, treated as a production meeting in progress, was to be a preparatory stage for a sweeping exhibition that would present an all-inclusive vision of both historical and contemporary Polish architecture. Such an event accorded with the universal schemata of rituals of social life structured in keeping in line with Stalinism, but the path to the First General Exhibition of Architecture in the People’s Republic of Poland (PWA, 8 March – 22 April 1953) turned out not to be easy. Problems concerning its fi nancing and venue, as well as the lack of political support, resulted in its opening, in the Zachęta building, soon after Stalin’s death. In general, the exhibition’s arrangement followed regional divisions, i.e. both the historical and contemporary material were arranged according to region. An analysis of this plan reveals that it was profoundly ill-suited to the realities of producing architecture in the state-owned design offi ces when the emphasis on typicality was increasing. The initial stage of the critique of Socrealism is also inseparably linked with the PWA; the essay appraising the exhibited designs as delivered at the First National Council of Architects in April 1953 must be considered the fi rst text of this kind. Both the OPA and the PWA are, above all, reminders of the practice of institutional coercion and of the ideological approach to history that were typical of Stalinism. At the same time, however, it should not be forgotten that the exhibition of 1953 resulted in the publication of a series of valuable publications concerning history and art, while the Regional Architectural Shows, instituted in order to select designs to be exhibited at the PWA, evolved into recurring events which in some centres are still organised today.

Background:Since the number of polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) patients is small not only in Japan but also in the world, the characteristics of PAN have not been fully clarified and appropriate treatment has not been established.Objectives:This study aimed to describe the epidemiological and clinical features and treatment of patients with PAN in Japan.Methods:We used the database of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) in 2013 and 2014. Data of 178 patients who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria by MHLW and had registered within a year after onset of PAN was analyzed.Results:The analysis included 75 males and 103 females, with a mean age of 64.5 ± 20.3 years. PAN was diagnosed by clinical symptoms in 27.6% of the patients, 11.5% of the patients by pathological findings, and the rest of the patients by both. Pathological examination was performed in 71.3% of the patients, of whom 11.2% had evidence of necrotizing vasculitis of the small and medium arteries. As a systemic symptom, fever was observed in 55.2% of cases. As organ symptoms, muscle and joint symptoms (74.7%), skin symptoms (73.0%), neuropsychiatric symptoms (50.0%), respiratory symptoms (32.6%), and renal symptoms (19.7%) were common. Patients aged 65 or older had a higher rate of systemic, renal and respiratory symptoms, and lower rate of skin symptoms compared with the patients younger than 65. Patients with renal symptoms had a high prevalence of respiratory, cardiac and ocular symptoms, while those with respiratory symptoms had a high prevalence of systemic and cardiac symptoms. Laboratory findings showed that MPO- and/or p-ANCA positive rate was 30.5% and PR3- and/or c-ANCA positive rate was 11.0%. The Hepatitis B antigen positive rate was 3.9%. Angiography was performed in 20.7%, among which 27.0% were found to have multiple small aneurysms, wall irregularities and stenosis at the abdominal aortic branches. Glucocorticoids were used for treatment in all cases with an average maximum prednisolone dose of 32.5 mg/day. Concomitant immunosuppressants were used in 28.7%, half of which was cyclophosphamide. In other cases, azathioprine or methotrexate was used. Immunosuppressants have been used more frequently in patients with systemic symptoms and nasal and ear symptoms. Among the immunosuppressants, cyclophosphamide tends to be used for patients with higher CRP or patients with respiratory symptoms, and the maximum dose of glucocorticoids was significantly higher in patients who used cyclophosphamide compared to those who used other immunosuppressants.Conclusion:PAN developed in middle-aged and elderly people and exhibited various clinical symptoms. We found that common symptoms varied with age, and treatment options were determined depending on the types of organ symptoms and severity. Background:Gout is a frequent comorbidity in kidney transplant (KT) recipients. However, assessing the independent effect of gout on KT outcomes is difficult because of multiple confounders (e.g., temporal changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR], cyclosporine or tacrolimus dose, urate-lowering medication use) that obscure a clear picture of gout’s potential impact.Objectives:This investigation assessed if the development of new-onset gout after KT was an independent risk factor for loss of graft function, as assessed by the need for maintenance hemodialysis following KT.Methods:This retrospective cohort study analyzed data on patients in the United States Renal Data System (USRDS) who received a primary KT between 1/1/2008 and 12/31/2015. The date of transplantation was the ‘index’ date. Eligible patients were required to have ≥24 months of Medicare coverage and no prior history of gout, defined as ≥1 claim with a gout diagnosis code in the 24 months prior to the index date. All patients were also required to have ≥12 months of coverage post index. Patients who died, experienced graft failure, or returned to dialysis <12 months post index were excluded. Because the first year following transplant is associated with the highest frequency of rejections, we evaluated subjects beginning 1 year after transplant. The exposure of interest was new-onset gout, defined as the presence of ≥2 claims for gout post index, and the primary endpoint was return to dialysis >12 months post index. Baseline time-invariant confounders included recipient and donor demographics and clinical characteristics at index. Time-varying confounders included body mass index (BMI) adjusted tacrolimus and cyclosporine dose, eGFR, and urate-lowering medication use post index. Patients who died or lost Medicare coverage >12 months post index were censored; all patients remaining at the end of the study period (12/31/2016) were also censored. A marginal structural model (MSM) was fitted to determine the relative risk of new-onset gout on return to dialysis, while controlling for both time-invariant and time-varying confounders.Results:18,525 of 466,589 KT recipients in the USRDS met study eligibility. Within the observation period, 1,399 (7.6%) developed new-onset gout and 1,420 (7.7%) returned to dialysis >12 months post index. Median time from index to new-onset gout and from index to return to dialysis was 16.2 months (IQR: 33.4) and 32.8 months (IQR: 28.4), respectively. Adjusting for baseline time-invariant and time-varying confounders via the MSM showed new-onset gout was associated with a 51% increased risk of return to dialysis >12 months post index (RR: 1.51, 95% CI: 1.03, 2.20).Conclusion:New-onset gout was independently associated with a 51% increased risk of return to dialysis >12 months after primary KT compared to a control cohort without gout. To our knowledge, this is the first observation of this outcome in an appropriately controlled cohort study of KT recipients with gout. В рамках развития органического сельского хозяйства актуально выявление сортов с высокой устойчивостью к вредным организмам. В условиях Удмуртской Республики на дерново-среднеподзолистой среднесуглинистой слабосмытой почве в 2017-2018 годах проводились исследования, целью которых была оценка новых и перспективных сортов картофеля различных по срокам созревания. Одной из задач было выявление повреждений клубней вредителями. Изучали сорта картофеля разных сроков созревания: раннеспелые Нандина, Ред Соня, Колетте, Беллароза, Винета, Джоконда, Раноми среднеспелые Джелли, Вираж, Гала, Рябинушка, Каптива, Алуэт позднеспелые Ред Фентази, Церата КВС, Танго. Полевой однофакторный опыт закладывался согласно методике полевого опыта. Клубневой анализ проводили в соответствии с ГОСТ 33996-2016 Картофель семенной. Технические условия и методы определения качества. Коэффициент адаптивности изучаемых сортов картофеля рассчитан по методу Л.А. Животкова. За два года исследований более урожайными были раннеспелые сорта: Нандина, Ред Соня, Беллароза, Раноми среднеспелые: Джелли, Каптива, Алуэт позднеспелые: Ред Фентази и Церата КВС. Повреждение клубней картофеля личинками щелкуна (проволочником) было очень высоким и составило в 2017 году в среднем по сортам 47, в 2018 году 61. В оба года исследований клубни были повреждены личинками озимой совки (в среднем 3-4 ), личинками майского хруща (1-2 ). В 2018 году наблюдалось повреждение полевками (в среднем по сортам 3 ). Раннеспелые сорта являются более адаптивными к условиям Удмуртской Республики (коэффициент адаптивности 1,22 и 1,31). Однако качество посадочного материала не соответствует ГОСТ по проценту повреждений вредителями. Поэтому необходима тщательная сортировка и доведение клубней до регламентируемых показателей. Для снижения поврежденности в полевых условиях картофель требуется размещать после бобовых и крестоцветных культур, проводить известкование почв и вносить перепревшие органические удобрения.As part of the development of organic agriculture, the identification of varieties with high resistance to pests is relevant. In the conditions of the Udmurt Republic, studies were carried out in 2017-2018 on the derno-medium-soil average carbon-free weak soil, the purpose of which was to assess new and permissive potato cultivars of different maturation times. One challenge was to identify damage to tubers by insect pests and the possibility of using them as planting material. Potato cultivars of different maturation dates were studied: early Nandina, Red Sonya, Kolette, Bellaroza, Vineta, Dzhokonda, Ranomi medium Dzhelli, Virazh, Gala, Ryabinushka, Kaptiva, Aluet late Red Fentazi, Tserata KVS, Tango. Field one-factor experiment was laid according to the method of experimental work. Tuberous analysis was carried out in accordance with GOST 33996-2016 Seed Potatoes. Technical conditions and methods of quality determination . The coefficient of adaptivity of the studied potato cultivars is calculated according to the method of L.A. Zhemkov. More crop-producing were early cultivars: Nandina, Red Sonya, Bellaroza, Ranomi average: Dzhelli, Kaptiva, Aluet late: Red Fentazi and Tserata CF. During the years of research, there was damage to potato tubers by wireworm in 2017 on average 47, and in 2018 61. The only cultivar, Ranomi, was not damaged by the wireworm in 2017. A small number of tubers was damaged by larvae of turnip moth (Agrotis segetum) (3-4) and larvae of white grub (1-2). During two years of research in the Udmurt Republic early cultivars were more adaptive, the coefficient of adaptability was 1,31 and 1,22. However, the quality of the planting material by the percentage of damaged tubers by pests does not comply with state standard. For growing in the region, early cultivars Nandin, Red Sonya, Kolette, Bellarosa, Vineta, Dzhokonda, Ranomi are more suitable from middle cultivars Dzhelli, Kaptiva and Aluet turned out to be more stable from late ripening Red Fentazi. Due to severe damage by insect pests, especially wireworms, careful sorting and bringing tubers to regulated parameters, liming of soils, and introduction of rotted organic fertilizers are necessary, as well as to place potatoes in crop rotation after legumes and cruciferous crops.

AbstractA phylogenetic tree was constructed by sequencing rbcL genes of 33 species representing 19 genera of Ranunculaceae, and three related species, Mahonia bealei, Mahonia fortunei and Nandina domestica. The results showed that the rbcL sequences of these Ranunculaceae range from 1,346 bp to 1,393 bp. The results based on the phylogenetic tree indicated that Caltha and Trollius should not be put in the same tribe, and a close relationship between Adonis and Trollius is supported by our research, while Aquilegia should be in Thalictroideae. In combination with the morphological and chemical evidence, the generic classification of Ranunculaceae should be revised into five subfamilies: Hydrastidoideae, Coptidoideae, Helleboroideae, Thalictroideae and Ranunculoideae. We demonstrate that the rbcL gene is of great value for investigating generic to subfamilial relationships in Ranunculaceae.

This paper compares the coverage of Kashmir Conflict in four English language dailies: two from Pakistan; DAWN and The Nation, and two from India; ‘The HINDU’ and ‘Times of India’ by employing Galtung’s Model of Peace Journalism (Galtung, 1986; 1998) and Lynch & McGoldrick’s (2005) Two-Sided Conflict Model. The study pursues two research questions; is the coverage of these newspaper war or peace- oriented, and do they report Kashmir Conflict through Two-Party (Pak-India) or Multi- Party lenses. For data sources, seven major recent events; Burhan Wani’s killing (2016), Uri Attack, Indian Surgical Strikes, Pulwama Attack, Balakot Airstrike, and Abhi Nandan’s Capture and Release (2019) were chosen. A total of 56 stories, one lead story and one editorial from each newspaper about every event, were collected. Each story was evaluated according to Galtung’s 19 indicators; nine War, nine Peace and one Neutral, and accordingly categorized. The analysis revealed that DAWN had the highest (46.15%) peace-oriented coverage while The HINDU was second with only 23% peace content. In the war category, The Nation scored the highest (100%) while the Times of India was found second (92.85%). No story could qualify for the neutral category. Overall, the coverage of these newspapers was found grossly (81.13%) war- oriented. Moreover, in the coverage of the Kashmir Conflict, the media succumb to the Two-Sided Model, projecting Pakistani and Indian states as the only legitimate parties while Kashmiris are portrayed as mere passive victims. These newspapers also focus only on visible effects and heavily rely on elite positions. The purpose of this study was to examine how much Peace Journalism–being reasonably advocated throughout the last decade in the Subcontinent–has changed the attitude of our media towards peace reporting.

Heavenly bamboo (Nandina domestica) is an evergreen ornamental plant with worldwide distribution. In May 2018, seven out of twenty N. domestica plants showing virus-like symptoms, such as yellow mosaic and curling, were observed in Lin’an, Zhejiang province. To determine the causal agent, a small RNA library was constructed using the Small RNA v1.5 Sample Prep Kit (Illumina, San Diego, USA) with total RNA extracted from leaves of a symptomatic plant. The library was sequenced by the Solexa platform at BGI Genomics (Shenzhen, China). A total number of 21,071,675 high-quality reads of 17-28 nucleotides (nt) in length remained after trimming adapter sequences and quality control. Reads were assembled using Velvet 0.7.31 and Oases 0.2.07 with the k-mer value of 17 (Schulz et al. 2012). BlastN and BlastX search against the GenBank viral nonredundant sequence databases revealed fifty-six contigs homologous to bean common mosaic virus (BCMV; genus Potyvirus; family Potyviridae). No contig homologous to the genomic sequence of other plant-infecting viruses was identified. These contigs were further assembled into a 9,315-nt fragment by SeqMan Pro 7.1.0 in Lasergene package (DNASTAR, Madison, WI), which covered 92.68% of the genome of BCMV strain CT (BCMV-CT; GenBank accession no. KM076650). The genome of this BCMV isolate (BCMV-NTZ1) was amplified by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) using primers designed based on assembled contigs with the Phusion® High-Fidelity DNA Polymerase (New England Biolabs, Beijing, China) and the FirstChoice® RLM-RACE Kit (Invitrogen, Carlsbad, USA), respectively. Amplicons were cloned and Sanger sequenced with three independent clones per amplicon. The genome is 10,052 nt in length excluding the poly-A tail (Genbank accession no. MZ670770) and shared the highest nt sequence identities with BCMV-CT (88.46%). The putative polyprotein shared 93.36% amino acid (aa) sequence identity with that of BCMV-CT. BCMV-NTZ1 also clustered with BCMV-CT in phylogenetic trees based on BCMV full genomes and aa sequences of coat protein. Five-leaf-stage seedlings of Nicotiana tabacum, N. benthamiana, Glycine max (Linn.) Merr., and Capsicum frutescens were mechanically inoculated with sap of BCMV-infected N. domestica leaves at fifteen plants per species. Seedlings of G. max developed virus-like (mosaic and leaf deformity) symptoms (7/15) at 15 days post-inoculation, while other plants remained symptomless throughout the experiment. Subsequent RT-PCR on all the plants using primers 27F1/14Rter and sequencing confirmed the presence and absence of BCMV-NTZ1 in all symptomatic G. max seedlings and other asymptomatic indicator plants, respectively. Subsequent RT-PCR survey further confirmed the association of BCMV with symptomatic heavenly bamboo samples but not asymptomatic plants (7/20). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of BCMV naturally infecting heavenly bamboo in China. N. domestica is susceptible to many viruses, e.g., cucumber mosaic virus, plantago asiatica mosaic virus, nandina stem pitting virus, apple stem grooving virus, and alternanthera mosaic virus (Barnett et al. 1973; Ahmed et al. 1983; Hughes et al. 2002, 2005; Tang et al. 2010; Wei et al. 2015). Our results indicate that N. domestica can also serve as an overwinter reservoir for BCMV and special attention should be paid to the damage it may cause.

Abstract:
Objectives: The objectives of the study were to compare progression of spontaneous versus induced labor in primigravida and multigravida women. Methods: Pregnant women admitted in Labor room of Bebe Nanaki mother and Child Care Centre, Amritsar during April 2019–March 2020 were selected for this study. A total of 200 pregnant women were selected and divided into two groups. Women in group A were induced while in group B were women with spontaneous onset of labor. Labor progression in both was compared. Results: In group A, the mean duration of the active phase in primigravida was 4.08±2.30 h and in multigravida was 4.02±2.20 h. In group B, the mean duration of active phase in primigravidas was 7.24±1.39 h and in multigravidas was 6.48±1.40 h. In group A, the mean duration of the second stage in a primigravida was 25.5±8.15 min and in a multigravida was 17.38±9.95 min. In group B, the mean duration of the second stage in a primigravida was 41.3±9.6 min, while in a multigravida was 22.72±6.2 h. Discussion: The mean duration of active phase in group A in the primigravida and multigravida was almost similar, showing that induction does not have any effect on the duration of active phase. The mean duration of the second stage of group A in primigravida was 25 min and multipara was 17 min showing that induction reduces the duration of the second stage. Conclusion: Induction of labor when done at the right gestational age for correct indication is beneficial to women as it reduces the complications caused due to the continuation of high-risk pregnancies.

Abstract:
The chicken major histocompatibility complex (MHC) on chromosome 16 is the most polymorphic region across the whole genome, and also an ideal model for genetic diversity investigation. The MHC B-F/B-L region is 92 kb in length with high GC content consisting of 18 genes and one pseudogene (Blec4), which plays important roles in immune response. To evaluate polymorphism of the Chinese indigenous chickens as well as to analyze the effect of selection to genetic diversity, we used WaferGen platform to identify sequence variants of the B-F/B-L region in 21 chicken populations, including the Red Jungle Fowl (RJF), Cornish (CS), White Leghorns (WLs), 16 Chinese domestic breeds, and two well-known inbred lines 63 and 72. A total of 3,319 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) and 181 INDELs in the B-F/B-L region were identified among 21 populations, of which 2,057 SNPs (62%) and 159 INDELs (88%) were novel. Most of the variants were within the intron and the flanking regions. The average variation density was 36 SNPs and 2 INDELs per kb, indicating dramatical high diversity of this region. Furthermore, BF2 was identified as the hypervariable genes with 67 SNPs per kb. Chinese domestic populations showed higher diversity than the WLs and CS. The indigenous breeds, Nandan Yao (NY), Xishuangbanna Game (XG), Gushi (GS), and Xiayan (XY) chickens, were the top four with the highest density of SNPs and INDELs. The highly inbred lines 63 and 72 have the lowest diversity, which might be resulted from a long-term intense selection for decades. Collectively, we refined the genetic map of chicken MHC B-F/B-L region, and illustrated genetic diversity of 21 chicken populations. Abundant genetic variants were identified, which not only strikingly expanded the current Ensembl SNP database, but also provided comprehensive data for researchers to further investigate association between variants in MHC and immune traits.
