In humans, the spleen is a highly compartmentalized organ. The structure, cell population, and functions are unique for each compartment. The red pulp comprises non-filtering lymphoid areas, the perifollicular zone that separates the red and white pulps, the red pulp cord tissue and sinuses, and the perivascular rim. B-follicles and T-cell areas can be found in the white pulp. The obtained specimens were divided into three groups: Group 1 (0 to 14 years), Group 2 (14 to 50 years), and Group 3. (Over 50 years). Abstract Erosion-corrosion, is a major problem in pulp/paper mill equipment. Erosion-corrosion in steels under caustic conditions is a challenging subject due to the particulate fluid with organics and non-Newtonian behavior. Fluid properties, liquor composition and process parameters affect corrosion rates in this regime. Studies have suggested that the flow may interfere with passive film formation in caustic conditions and significantly increase the corrosion rate. In order to better understand the mechanism of this corrosion process, electrochemical tests were performed on UNS G10180, UNS

Abstract Austenitic stainless steels are known to be susceptible to caustic stress corrosion cracking (SCC) above approximately 121°C. However, when sulfides are present in caustic solutions the SCC of austenitic stainless steels has been reported to occur at lower temperatures. Hot sulfide-containing caustic solutions are of interest to various industrial chemical processes including pulp and paper as well asd nuclear industry. Hot sulfide-containing caustic solution (white liquor) is used in the kraft pulping process in the pulp and paper industry. Different concentrations of sulfide and hyd

Abstract Laboratory corrosion studies were carried out in green, white, and black liquors from a pulp and paper mill in the Northwestern US. The corrosion potential behavior and corrosion rates of carbon steel, stainless steel, and cast irons were determined at the service temperatures of the equipment from which the liquors were sampled, including storage tanks, evaporators, and concentrators. Both low-and high-silicon content carbon steels were found to be spontaneously active and had unacceptably high corrosion rates in the green liquor, white liquor, and strong black liquor. Abstract Process industries, including pulp, paper and biomass conversion are constantly in search of new, cost-efficient materials solutions. Duplex stainless steels are attractive in this respect by virtue of their combination of high strength, price stability, and corrosion resistance compared to their austenitic counterparts. The range of duplex grades extends from the lean low-Mo grades and up to high-performance super- or hyperduplex. The new duplex grade S82441 has a property profile designed to fill the gap between the existing duplex grades S32304 and S32205. In this paper the propert

Abstract Commercially pure nickel (N02200), its lower carbon version N02201 and various nickel base alloys and stainless steels have been used extensively in many chemical processes and other applications where resistance to a multitude of different caustic solutions is needed. A range of caustic environments can be found from nearly pure NaOH or KOH to NaOH – NaCl solutions encountered in caustic evaporators or caustic “white liquor” solutions encountered in the pulp and paper industry. Selection of the most cost effective and reliable alloy is based upon factors such as caustic concentration

Background : Banana being a monocot and having distinct peel and pulp tissues is unique among the fleshy fruits and hence can provide a more comprehensive understanding of fruit ripening. Our previous research which translated ripening discoveries from tomato, led to the identification of six banana fruit-associated MADS-box genes, and we confirmed the positive role of MaMADS1/2 in banana ripening. The overall goal was to further elucidate the banana ripening signaling pathway as mediated by MADS-boxtranscriptional regulators. Specific objectives were: 1) characterize transcriptional profiles

The swelling of plant motor cells is regulated by various signals with almost unknown mediators. One of the obligatory steps in the signaling cascade is the activation of K+-influx channels -K+ channels activated by hyperpolarization (KH channels). We thus explored the regulation of these channels in our model system, motor cell protoplasts from Samanea saman, using patch-clamp in the "whole cell" configuration. (a) The most novel finding was that the activity of KH channels in situ varied with the time of the day, in positive correlation with cell swelling: in Extensor cells KH channels were
