Two decades later, Whitmore realized that devotion to his true research interest, the study of fossil cetaceans, would not allow him time to complete the study of the entelodont remains. He generously passed the specimens on to the writer to finish the project for which he had laid the groundwork.

Reverse‐time migration of zero‐offset data for acoustic waves has been successfully implemented by Whitmore (1983), Baysal et al. (1983), McMechan (1983), and Loewenthal and Mufti (1983). In reverse‐time migration, data recorded on the surface are used as the boundary condition and are extrapolated backward in time (Whitmore, 1983; Levin, 1984). Reverse‐time migration is mathematically a well‐posed problem. This is in contrast to conventional depth‐extrapolation‐migration schemes, in which the surface data are initial‐value conditions for solving the wave equation. Reverse‐time migration may o

Whole plant form and function vary spectacularly across the seed plants. In recent years, plant evolutionary ecologists have begun to document this diversity on large geographic scales by analysing ‘functional traits’ that are indicative of whole plant performance across environmental gradients (Swenson & Enquist 2007, Wright et al. 2004). Despite the high degree of functional diversity in tropical forests, convergence in function does occur locally along successional or light gradients (Bazzaz & Pickett 1980, Swaine & Whitmore 1988).

The material sometimes forms a fairly broad annulus, and the ring appears nearly flat. Simple estimates suggest that differential precession will destroy a polar ring in much less than a Hubble time, implying that the observed structures have been formed only recently. It is then surprising that some of them are so regular, unless something acts to prevent their disruption.
