Abstract This chapter delves into the interconnection of social sustainability assessment information and data. The chapter starts by introducing the interconnection of Social Impact and Sustainability within assessments providing context to societal automation. The remainder of the chapter is structured in accordance with a landscape theory review of existing social value and social impact assessment literature including theories, metrics, measurements, and tools. This investigations considers social value for business and or societal institutions. It highlights the challenges of inconsistency when machines attempt to process and apply the data then unravels and unifies definitions to address this challenge. The investigation further explores the relationships between the data and maps the symbiotic relationship between the data and stakeholders measuring social impact. This chapter concludes with requirements for the systemic alignment of social sustainability information in a technological network that are further applied to the conceptual modeling of the Stigmergic Information System Network for Social Sustainability Information elaborated in subsequent chapters.

Abstract:
In this paper, I address the theme of racism in the mathematics classroom in order to investigate the invisibility of black people in printed media. To do this, I describe a pedagogical strategy called the Social Research Group (SRG), which largely originates from critical mathematics education. SRGs are research groups formed by students in basic education who develop thematic investigations. In this text, we describe how the theme of racism was problematised through one of the landscapes of investigation, built on the theme of the visibility of black characters in national magazines. This scenario, in addition to enabling reflection on an important topic for Brazilian society—racial democracy—served to promote the idea that mathematics not only colonises various social practices, but can also be an instrument that helps us to reveal social asymmetries.

Abstract:
This chapter aims to propose that landscapes of investigation are possible learning environments for the establishment of unfinished young students’ dreams. Thus, through the lens of certain authors, I present some philosophical ideas of the human being, such as those of unfinishedness and dreaming, as well as foreground and totalisation. Next, I briefly explore aspects of the school tradition evidenced by philosophers who have influenced education as it is today, such as students as “blank sheets”, school as the space to develop reason, and mathematics as “true reason”. Then, I address technical rationality and critical rationality, presenting some differences and identifying paradigms in which we can recognise mathematics education. Finally, I present landscapes of investigation as a possibility in the face of such studies. Therefore, despite this chapter being characterised as a theoretical essay, I present excerpts from observations, interviews and discussion groups that were part of the data production during my doctorate.

Abstract:
Looking at the range of diversity in the classroom is a necessary task for the teacher who seeks to teach from an inclusive perspective. More and more educational legislation has been authorised so that all students can have access to quality education. The use of landscapes of investigation in mathematics teacher education could become a practice that helps prospective teachers to reflect on future practices by taking into consideration the diversity of school contexts. In this chapter, reflections are made on the practices of two research projects, one for a doctorate and another for a Master’s degree. Working with investigative projects allowed prospective teachers to think about practices that take into account the particularities of this diversity. Furthermore, the dialogic perspective is highlighted as being essential in this process, as well as the ideas and visions of the prospective teachers invited to participate in their own professional education. It is hoped that this chapter can inspire prospective teachers to develop critical activities that allow for the participation of all students.

Howsam, Leslie. "8. Who was Eliza Orme?" In Eliza Orme’s Ambitions. Open Book Publishers, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.11647/obp.0392.08.

Full text
Abstract:
The closing chapter draws together the threads of evidence in the context of Leslie Howsam’s memories of a prolonged investigation and her informed speculation about Eliza Orme’s ambitions. It describes Howsam’s return, after retirement and during the Covid pandemic, to the study of Orme in the dual context of a transformed (digital) research environment and a renewed academic interest in women’s professional lives. One such thread is ‘Loyalty, logic, and strategy: the case of Charles Dilke’s divorce scandal’, where the strong circumstantial evidence of Orme’s professional involvement is discussed. Another is ‘Speculation: Eliza’s thwarted ambition’ which adduces the argument that Orme might have been aiming for election as part of the first cohort of women members of Parliament. Turning to the questions of identity that have framed the book as a whole, the following sections ask: ‘Who was Eliza to her friends and family?’, ‘Who was Miss Orme to lawyers (then and now)?’ and ‘Who was she to posterity?’. The chapter concludes that Eliza Orme was an independent single professional woman in public life; she described herself as ‘hopelessly practical’ while aiming to do first one, and then another unthinkable job for a woman of her time, initially to be a lawyer, and perhaps also to be a politician, on equal terms with men.

Abstract:
It was not uncommon in Brazil for slaves to own slaves. Slaves as masters of slaves existed in many slave societies and societies with slaves, but considering modern, chattel slavery in the Americas, Brazil seems to have been a special case where this phenomenon thrived, especially in nineteenth-century urban Bahia. The investigation is based on more than five hundred cases of enslaved slaveowners registered in ecclesiastical and manumission records in the provincial capital city of Salvador. The paper discusses the positive legal basis and common law rights that made possible this peculiar fo

Abstract:
We report a laboratory experiment on dynamic patent races in an indefinite horizon with complete information. In a competitive environment, we analyze the R&D investment behavior of players who are randomly and anonymously paired in each race. We vary subjects’ initial positions as leader/follower or symmetric/asymmetric, as well as the distance between the initial knowledge stock and the target. Our results show that individual average effort is highest for players in a tie position, followed by leaders, and lowest for followers. Starting as a follower (leader) leads to a lower (higher) c

For this reason, language learner's self-directed learning or independent language learning, both in the Self-Access Learning Center (SALC) and in authentic situations outside classes, has become an essential component of English language learning, both in the ESL and EFL contexts. The main objective of this research was to investigate the use of a self-access language learning center by 515 Chulalongkorn University students who were required to ear
