Abstract:
Abstract The construction sector is one of the most resource intense and environmentally damaging industries in the world. A promising approach to counteract this is to use principles of the Circular Economy (input reduction, reuse, and recycling) to ensure the continuity of value of a building’s materials. Thus, we translated the learnings of an in-depth case study analysis including four buildings and their construction processes into a definition and framework for circular construction. We conceptualise buildings as circular systems that produce reusable components or biodegradable materials by practices operating across a building’s lifecycle. These practices do not only include material and design aspects to close biological and technological loops, but also immaterial practices such as knowledge and expertise, locality, management and skills, and information. We argue that these organisational aspects that go beyond the current state of the art are critical enablers for circularity in construction. This perspective is relevant for practitioners in the field and allows for a new and holistic look at buildings as ‘waste generators’ or, in a positive scenario, as ‘material depots’. Designing for recycling and reuse will require architects to build collaborations and knowledge across and beyond material value chains.

Abstract:
The whole-life design of complex electro-mechanical systems is extremely significant which could satisfy the high reliability requirement of production line and reduce the accident caused by complicated equipments. In this paper, the whole-life of gear was taken as an example to indicate that the sustainable development of whole-life design must rely on the study of few sampling systems. Two research strategies of few sampling systems are proposed: numerical simulation and virtual prototype technology.

Abstract:
AbstractDo different sustainable design methods generate different sustainable design ideas? Do they also drive different product innovation ideas? This project empirically tested three design methods: The Natural Step, Whole System Mapping, and Biomimicry. Testing involved qualitatively categorizing 1,115 design ideas from 23 workshops for over 30 companies, including consultancies and manufacturers in consumer electronics, furniture, and apparel. The categorized ideas were then counted to determine if the different design methods caused different kinds of ideas. They did. For example, The Natural Step drove more ideas on green material choice, circular end of life, and social impacts, while Biomimicry drove more durability ideas and Whole System Mapping drove more cost reduction ideas, among other differences. Overall, The Natural Step generated the highest percentage of sustainability ideas, Biomimicry generated the most innovation ideas, and Whole System Mapping generated a balance of both. These preliminary results should help designers and engineers choose design methods suited to the types of design solutions they desire.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to ascertain primary care advanced clinical practitioners’ (ACP) perceptions and experiences of what factors influence the development and identity of ACP roles, and how development of ACP roles that align with Health Education England’s capability framework for advanced clinical practice can be facilitated in primary care. Design/methodology/approach The study was located in the North of England. A qualitative approach was used in which 22 staff working in primary care who perceived themselves to be working as ACPs were interviewed. Data analysis was guided by Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six phase method. Findings Five themes emerged from the data – the need for: a standardised role definition and inclusive localised registration; access to/availability of quality accredited educational programmes relevant to primary care and professional development opportunities at the appropriate level; access to/availability of support and supervision for ACPs and trainee ACPs; a supportive organisational infrastructure and culture; and a clear career pathway. Originality/value Findings have led to the generation of the Whole System Workforce Framework of INfluencing FACTors (IN FACT), which lays out the issues that need to be addressed if ACP capability is to be maximised in primary care. This paper offers suggestions about how IN FACT can be addressed.

Abstract:
Inductive measurement of magnetic fields is a diagnostic technique widely used in several scientific fields, such as magnetically confined fusion, plasma thrusters and particle accelerators, where real time control and detailed characterization of physics phenomena are required. The accuracy of the measured data strongly influences the machine controllability and the scientific results. In the framework of the assembly modifications of the RFX-mod experiment, a complete renew and improvement of the magnetic diagnostic system, from the probes moved inside the vacuum vessel to the integrator modules, has been carried out. In this paper, the whole system making up the magnetic diagnostics is described, following the acquisition chain from the probe to the streamed data and illustrating the requirements and conflicting limitations which affect the different components, in order to provide a comprehensive overview useful for an integrated design of any new systems. The characterization of a prototypical implementation of the whole acquisition chain is presented, focusing on the flexible ADC architecture adopted for providing a purely numerical signal integration, highlighting the advantages that this technology offers in terms of flexibility, compactness and cost effectiveness, along with the limitations found in existing implementation in terms of ADC noise characteristics and their possible solutions.

Abstract:
Evolutionary and Adaptive strategies (ES & AS) for diverse multilevel search across a preliminary, whole-system design hierarchy defined by discrete and continuous variable parameters are described. Such strategies provide high-level decision support when integrated with preliminary design software describing the major elements of an engineering system. Initial work involving a Structured Genetic Algorithm (stGA) with appropriate mutation regimes to encourage search diversity is described and preliminary results are presented. The shortcomings of the stGA approach are identified and alternative strategies are introduced. A dual agent strategy (GAANT) involving elements of an ant colony search and an evolutionary search concurrently manipulating the discrete and continuous variable parameter sets is presented. Appropriate communication between the two search agents results in a more efficient search across the hierarchy than that achieved by the stGA, while also simplifying the chromosomal representation. This simplification allows the further development of the preliminary design hierarchy in terms of complexity. The technique therefore represents a significant contribution to configuration design where multilevel, mixed discrete/continuous parameter design problems can be prevalent.

Abstract:
Conventionally, partial redundancy is applied at frail or crucial parts in most control system. As for the significant occasion of the Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremony, any fault of the control system may result in immeasurable losses. In this paper, we focus on redundancy policies and introduce the realizing of two different redundancy systems: the basic whole redundancy system, and the Hetero-type whole redundancy system, viz. two different control kernels (the PLC and its corresponding software and network) used in the same system. These two redundancy control systems are implemented at examination place and the National Stadium individually. These control systems set a successful example of the redundancy system implemented in mechanical control system at important occasions. By analyzing and comparing the reliability of the two redundancy systems, we get the results that the Hetero-type whole redundancy system has higher reliability than the basic whole redundancy system.

Abstract:
Construction project success depends on success of design. It is very rare previous research about the success of design as a determinant to the success of construction projects. The Whole System Design (WSD) approach in a planning of a high-rise residential property consider the success interrelatedness of both problems and solutions. It can help to create more sustainable designs. Nevertheless, designers often face several factors that exclusively reduce the rate of successful design i.e. design model and methods. One way to manage this issue is to reduce ambiguousness by using a whole system design approach. This study purposes to explore framework of Whole System Design approach for successful design. Application of literature review method is used to understanding the problem by analysing 20 articles about high-rise building, residential and whole system design. The result presents a mapping of several methods that used in previous research. It is to help more widespread the successful design in a high-rise residential property.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report on an evaluation of the UK Healthy Universities Network (UKHUN), which explored engagement of network members; identified what members value about the network; examined facilitators and barriers to engagement; and informed the network’s future development. Design/methodology/approach The study was a two phase mixed-method study, with participants being staff from Higher Education institutions. Phase 1 involved a documentary review and an online 14-question survey (n=32). Phase 2 comprised follow-up semi-structured interviews and focus groups, conducted using Skype (n=11). These were audio recorded and transcripts were thematically analysed in a two-stage process. Findings A number of key themes emerged from the thematic analysis: value of network meetings and events; popularity of the network website; increased communication and collaboration; sense of leadership offered by the network; interest and inclusion of an international perspective; importance of institutional support. Research limitations/implications Only six universities who are involved in the network took part in Phase 2. Although a range of organisations were chosen purposively, it is possible that additional key issues at other universities were excluded. Originality/value The UKHUN is valued by its membership, particularly its biannual meetings, online presence, leadership, ethos and communication methods. Key barriers include the capacity of staff to attend meetings and contribute to the network, influenced by a lack of institutional commitment and prioritisation. Findings from the evaluation have informed a “refresh” of the network’s website and a revision of its membership structure, as well as guiding its positioning to achieve greater strategic influence.
