Abstract:
The 650-ha cooling pond for the Genesee thermal power plant near Edmonton required more than 15 km of earth-containment dyke up to 25 m high to be constructed on a high plastic clay foundation. Other embankment construction activity at the Genesee site indicated that there was very little dissipation of construction pore pressure in the foundation clay and that embankment heights of more than 6 m would require stabilization measures. The high portions of the cooling-pond dyke were built in three stages between 1982 and 1986. An extensive instrumentation monitoring program was established to control the rate of fill placement during construction. Counterbalancing earth berms were used to stabilize most of the high sections of dyke. During the later stages of dyke construction, lack of dissipation of high excess pore pressure in the foundation clay indicated that the sole use of counterbalancing berms might not provide sufficient stabilization. Prefabricated drainage wicks were used as an additional measure to lower the foundation pore pressures under the counterbalancing berms in these critical areas. Spacing of the wick drains was determined by applying Hansbo's wick-drain theory and from data collected from a wick-drain test section. Additional piezometers were installed prior to wick installation to assess the effectiveness of the wicks. Over 14 000 wick drains were installed at spacings of 2.5–2.75 m to a maximum depth of 26 m below the top of the berm. The installation procedures are discussed, along with difficulties of installation. The wicks were very effective in lowering the foundation pore pressures and improving dyke stability. Instrument monitoring data used to assess the wick-drain performance and to control the rate of construction during dyke completion are presented and discussed. Abstract:
The technique of installing prefabricated wick drains is well established in Europe and Japan, but is relatively new to North America. This paper describes the use of piezometer cone data to predict the performance of wick drains in a soft clayey silt in Burnaby, British Columbia. A description of the testing procedures and the theory to calculate the rate of consolidation are briefly presented. The predicted rate of consolidation using the piezometer cone data and the measured performance is compared and discussed; good agreement between the two was found. Abstract:
The soft base in the testing section of Jiang-zhu highwaysis 55 meters deep, and its mechanical property is not better than that of silt soil, the sand-wick drained length is one of the crucial factors for this highwaywhich influences the consolidation speed. Based on the characteristic of soft foundation, experiences and the interrelationship between the processing area and the subjacent bed effecting on draining, the mechanism of extra-long sand-wick for the extra-deep soft foundation is studied. The theoretical consolidation degree in the deep soft foundation treating with extra-long sand-wick drain had been calculated, the designed depth of sand-wick drain were 25 and 22 meters. Moreover, the total settlement will be predicted. According to the monitoring data of displacement and settlement during loading, the characteristic of consolidation settlement of the soft soil foundation had been analyzed. The results indicated that the settlement was very sensitive to the loading speed. The sedimentation became fast with the increasing loading. The sedimentation speed was always very high, which was 15 to 25mm/day on the average. During the prophase of pre-compaction, the consolidation degree of section K53+242.47 (h=25m) was up to 80% in 350 days, which was much faster than the section K53+402.47 (h=22m). Moreover, the soft soil foundation was consolidated stably according to the strict dynamic monitoring data. By using hyperbolic theory to analyze monitoring data, the predictive settlement value of post-project can meet the designed requirement. The treating effect of the 25m depth sand-wick drain was better than that of 22m, which provided available data for extra thick soft foundation treatment.

Abstract:
Over many decades, natural fibre bundles have been widely used for drainage and filtration applications because of their favourable hydraulic conductivity and abundance in Asian countries. In recent times, natural (biodegradable) coir and jute drains, which are environmentally friendly, have been considered in lieu of conventional geosynthetic wick drains for soft clay consolidation in Australian coastal regions. However, there is a lack of a computational framework to predict the hydraulic behaviour of fibre drains on the basis of micromechanical (fabric) characteristics. Employing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with the discrete element method (DEM) to model the hydraulic behaviour of fibrous materials has shown promise in an earlier 2016 study by Nguyen and Indraratna, which considered an idealized parallel arrangement of fibres for simplicity. This paper aims to broaden the application of the coupled CFD–DEM technique to real fibres (coconut coir) considering both nontwisted and twisted fibre bundles that have more complex porous structure. The hydraulic conductivity determined from the numerical approach is validated with the experimental results, and also compared with the analytical prediction based on the conventional Kozeny–Carmen (KC) approach. The current study shows that the CFD–DEM technique can capture well the fluid flow characteristics of a nonuniform fibrous structure, including dense twisted coir bundles.

Abstract:
One of the commonly used techniques to improve marine soft ground is the drainage consolidation method by plastic board drains (PBDs). But some complex marine soft ground will cause construction inconvenience of PBDs in certain areas of these sites, thus affecting the improvement effect. An alternative possible approach to overcoming these deficiencies may be the combination of PBDs and sand wick drains (SWDs) (i.e., composite prefabricated vertical drains (CPVDs)) as vertical drainage channels in the same site. In order to verify the suitability and performance of this method in marine soft ground improvement, a case study was performed based on the field monitoring and construction of the marine soft ground of an intercity express railway project in China. The construction procedure using the CPVD system, the field monitoring instrumentation scheme, and the design of fill surcharge level were described, and the field monitoring data were presented. The settlement characteristics, dissipation features of pore water pressure, and the horizontal movement pattern were assessed. In addition, predictions of ultimate settlement, postconstruction settlement, and consolidation degree were discussed by applying a modified hyperbolic model. The results show that the marine ground improved by the CPVD system is suitable for the construction of intercity express railway and high-speed railway. The improvement construction period of complex marine soft ground will be greatly shortened by the proposed parallel construction programme. This work will provide technical supports and application reference for the improvement of the similar marine soft ground.

Abstract:
Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) is a growing industry for the production of leafy vegetables and fresh produce in general. Moreover, CEA is a potentially desirable alternative production system, as well as a risk management solution for the food safety challenges within the fresh produce industry. Here, we will focus on hydroponic leafy vegetable production (including lettuce, spinach, microgreens, and herbs), which can be categorized into six types: (1) nutrient film technique (NFT), (2) deep water raft culture (DWC), (3) flood and drain, (4) continuous drip systems, (5) the wick method, and (6) aeroponics. The first five are the most commonly used in the production of leafy vegetables. Each of these systems may confer different risks and advantages in the production of leafy vegetables. This review aims to (i) address the differences in current hydroponic system designs with respect to human pathogen internalization risk, and (ii) identify the preventive control points for reducing risks related to pathogen contamination in leafy greens and related fresh produce products.

Abstract:
This paper presents the performance analysis of a window air conditioner unit incorporated with wick less loop heat pipes (WLHP). The WLHP are located on the evaporator side of the air conditioning unit. The working medium for the WLHP is R134a refrigerant gas, an alternate refrigerant. The supply and return humidity of room air, the heat removal rat, and the coefficient of performance of the unit are analyzed for various ambient and room temperatures before and after incorporation of WLHP. The performance curves are drawn by comparing the power consumption and humidity collection rates for various room and ambient temperatures. The results show that coefficient of performance of the unit is improved by 18% to 20% after incorporation of WLHP due to pre-cooling of return air by WLHP, which reduces the thermal load on compressor. Similarly, the energy consumption is reduced by 20% to 25% due to higher thermostat setting and the humidity collection is improved by 35% due to pre-cooling effect of WLHP. The results are tabulated and conclusion drawn is presented based on the performance.

Abstract:
Geotechnical centrifuge models were used to study the feasibility of a new installation technique for stabilization of marginally stable slopes. Reinforcing elements were driven horizontally and directly into the existing slope, similar to the installation of vertical wick drains, thus requiring little or no excavation. This results in a rapid and economical solution for slope stabilization. The reinforcing elements used in the model simulated the high-strength nonwoven geotextile strips, which will be used in actual slope remediation work. The geotextile strips perform the dual functions of drainage and reinforcement. Miniature drivers and various instrumentation were used in the models. The results from the model tests provide useful information for the design of the spacing and placement of the reinforcing strips and the design and construction of the actual prototype driving equipment. The proposed construction technique could be beneficial and economical in slope stabilization of highway embankments and related slope work in highway construction.

Abstract:
The application of electro-osmosis (EO) for stabilizing soft clays is receiving more attention in geotechnical engineering. When the application of traditional ground improvement techniques, such as surcharge, pre-loading, wick drains, and vacuum pre-loading, is not appropriate for a particular situation, innovative techniques such as electro-osmosis need to be considered. Although the effectiveness of electro-osmosis has been widely demonstrated in many field applications, geotechnical engineers are still hesitant to apply electro-osmosis due to unknown effects such as electro-chemical changes, which could not be accounted for in the design. This paper presents a design of an electro-osmotic triaxial testing apparatus suitable for electro-osmotic treatment of soft clays and for measuring electro-osmotic permeability and generated pore-water pressure, as well as a testing procedure that accounts for the contribution of electro-chemical changes in the improvement of soil properties. A series of electro-osmotic triaxial tests with various initial stresses and boundary conditions were conducted and the results are presented in the paper.

Abstract:
This article examines the decision-making process for a new fort which the Dutch West India Company proposed to build near Takoradi in present-day Ghana in the third quarter of the eighteenth century. By closely following the process of design, evaluation, and redesign of the fort, this article argues that the WIC was institutionally incapable of coordinating and carrying out such a complex project. The original design for the new fort was made in 1774 by Johan Frederik Trenks, a Silesian-born engineer who, as it turned out, was not current with modern design practices and used Dutch examples from the first half of the seventeenth century. The design was sent to the Netherlands for evaluation and returned with scathing criticism. The long, drawn-out process of design, evaluation, and redesign of what was after all a relatively small fort show the institutional paralysis of the WIC in the years leading up to the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780–84). Though the fort would never be completed, construction did begin shortly before the war. The conflict, followed shortly thereafter by the dissolution of the WIC, meant the project would never be completed.

Abstract:
For a new Police Headquarters Complex in Ottawa, an excavation was required to a depth of 10 m in medium to stiff sensitive silty clays and clayey silts. The risk of a bottom-heave failure due to uplift caused by significant groundwater pressures in the silty soil a few metres below the bottom of the excavation was recognized, and contract requirements included a wellpoint installation assisted by electro-osmosis. The successful bidder was able to develop an alternative method based on the observational approach and completed the foundation at a lesser cost. A small test excavation was instrumented, and digging proceeded cautiously to full depth. The observed bottom heave and pore pressure changes were encouraging, so the test area was enlarged in steps until a workable size of excavation was safely made, then the structural raft was able to be placed. A backup system of pore pressure relief wells using wick drains in the bottom of the excavation was also developed. A large pore pressure reduction, due to the release of overburden pressure, was expected by the contractor's consultant, and a slow regain of the groundwater pressure was also expected due to the low horizontal permeabilities involved. The test excavation instrumentation and observations confirmed these expectations. Key words: bottom heave, excavation, clay, pore pressure.

Abstract:
Melbourne's Crown Casino was constructed on a site bordering the Yarra River and underlain by problem soils of the Coode Island Silt Formation. The development needed to provide two levels of basement car park over the entire site. An innovative approach to groundwater control around the excavation was required to avoid depressurisation of adjoining soils, leading to settlements. Analysis showed a conventional bentonite cut-off wall would still allow depressurisation by lateral flow through the Coode Island Silt during the construction period. The high cost and construction difficulty of a very low permeability wall mitigated against it. An hydraulic wall was proposed in conjunction with a conventional cut-off wall. This comprised a curtain of wick drains surrounding the cut-off wall and charged with water. Control of seepage through an underlying aquifer by a cut-off wall was considered, but a more cost-effective method using recharge by wells was adopted when shown necessary. Monitoring of groundwater pressures around the site showed that the maximum change in water pressure was less than 1 m head, the design criterion. Part way through construction, recharge was initiated when monitoring of the deep aquifer showed pressure reduction attributed to vertical leakage through a basalt tongue.Key words: excavation, basements, groundwater, clays, settlement, monitoring.

Abstract:
During his lifetime, Karl Otto Lagerfeld (1933–2018) attained such industry renown that he became widely known as the Emperor of Fashion. Lagerfeld ran several fashion houses, such as Chanel and Fendi, leading them to unprecedented profits. He also created his own fashion label. Owing to his unremitting pursuit of excellence through creative expression, Lagerfeld’s creativity, energy and intuition for fashion trends seemed only to expand throughout his long career. The authors suggest that, through his creative approach to fashion, architecture, and publishing, Lagerfeld articulated and refined a core set of values-such as “Bildung,” “lightness” and “the unexpected”—that served as a Diltheyan “nexus” linking the Prussian-born designer with the global consumer. The authors apply two specific creativity theories to Lagerfeld’s life and work, namely the mini-c, little-c, Pro-c and Big-C creativity theory and Sternberg’s WICS-model (wisdom, intelligence and creativity). The article uses a psychobiographical case study design formulated according to a research paradigm of modern hermeneutics. First- and third-person data on Lagerfeld were collected and evaluated through a hermeneutically-informed syntho-analysis. Research ethics were followed. The findings demonstrate the interplay of mini-c, little-c, Pro-c and Big-C creativity throughout the subject’s lifetime, as well as the subject’s application of WICS, both of which led to the subject’s worldwide success. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations for future research and practice are provided.

Abstract:
At the end of the 2006 term, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its decision with respect to the Texas redistricting controversy. While in its decision (LULAC v. Perry) the court struck down one of the newly drawn districts (the 23rd) the case is more notable for what the court did not do. The Court did not see anything in the Constitution indicating that state legislatures are restricted as to when redistricting ought to be done. Traditionally the process is done after the new census data is delivered, usually in years ending in 1, and the new districts are in effect for elections in years ending in a 2. The state government in Texas was still divided in 2001 and a federal court ended up drawing new district boundaries, but after the GOP gained control in the next election they decided to redraw the congressional district lines more to their advantage for the 2004 election. Moreover a big part of the litigation was the claim that the Republicans had treated the Democrats unfairly enough in the new map that it constituted a partisan gerrymander and the Court, the Democrats claimed, ought to step in and doing something about it. The Justices did not strike down the map on these grounds and it is still unclear to most observers if the Court will step into the fray at some late date with respect to this issue.

Abstract:
AbstractIn metrology, the normal distribution is often taken for granted, e. g. when evaluating the result of a measurement and its uncertainty, or when establishing the equivalence of measurements in key or supplementary comparisons. The correctness of this inference and subsequent conclusions is dependent on the normality assumption, such that a validation of this assumption is essential. Hypothesis testing is the formal statistical framework to do so, and this introduction will describe how statistical tests detect violations of a distributional assumption. In the metrological context we will advise on how to select such a hypothesis test, how to set it up, how to perform it and which conclusion(s) can be drawn. In addition, we calculate the number of measurements needed to decide whether a process departs from a normal distribution and quantify how sure one is about this decision then. These aspects are illustrated for the powerful Shapiro-Wilk test and by an example in legal metrology. For this application we recommend to perform 330 measurements. Briefly we also touch upon the issues of multiple testing and rounded measurements.

In accordance with the principles of Prototype Theory (Lakoff 1987; Langacker 1987), the combination of values displayed by the items results in an overall degree of typicality and will allow their location in the centre or the periphery of the category. The theoretical framework will be put into practice in the analysis of a corpus of blends naming videogames. Most of them are found to be prototypical items, the most common type being the so-called "overlapping" blend (Splatoon: splat + platoon). Lastly, concerning the motivations for the creation of blends in this particular field, these items succeed in economically capturing key features of the game so as to awaken the interest of potential buyers. Moreover, blends anticipate the humorous, puzzling or creative qualities of the game they name and wink at the players’ inventiveness to work out rules.

Abstract:
The present work has as its main objective the assessment of the kind and quantity of waste produced by the metallurgic industries in the city of Ijuí. The roll of the 78 metallurgic plants was drawn from the ROLL OF CONTRIBUTORS/96 provided by the BUREAU OF COMERCE, INDUSTRY ANO TOURISM OF IJUÍ. In spite of this number, only 40 firms were assessed because the others were closed (14) or not found (24). The assessment was made through a questionnaire applied IN LOCO in a period comprised between June/96 to February/97. The numeric data about the amount of waste is a monthly average value estimated by the firms themselves. The waste produced in higher amounts are: metals, fusing sand, office paper and dining hall scraps. The total amount of waste produced makes 48.809 Kg/month, being 14.711 Kg/month are reciclated. The waste not recycled makes 34.098 Kg/month and is sent to junk yards, burnt or thrown in the municipal waste deposit 101. The fusing sand, wich is the waste produced in major amounts of size, isn't produced anymore. In this case the total amount of waste produced goes to 18.809 Kg/month, with a recycling percentage of 78%

Introduction. Today in Ukraine doesn’t have established wages system that’s why this issue requires in-depth study despite the large number of research scientists in the field of personnel motivation. The purpose of the paper is to find ways to increase the competitiveness and productivity of enterprises of “Ukrzaliznytsia” through the introduction of a modern efficient wages system. Results. In the process of the research conclusions were drawn that “Ukrzaliznytsia” in the process of corporatization should build its own system of personnel motivation wich could be able to fully take into account the specifics of this activity and its implementation translate into more effective of personnel productivity with the main goal: to increase external competitiveness. Conclusion. As compared to the experience of the leading countries of the world on the railway in Ukraine the level of personnel motivation of railway industry is very low. “Ukrzaliznytsia” should change own system of labor motivation with using maximum approximation to the features of activities and objective economic realities in the country. Therefore, the introduction and application of innovative forms of motivating own employees in “Ukrzaliznytsia” should ensure the dependence of wages of employees and the results of their work. The correct and complex application of motivational methods in the context of corporatization of “Ukrzaliznytsia” can provide an increase in employee productivity.

Abstract:
Aleksander Wat and historical experience An exceptionally complex biography of Aleksander Wat, apparently present in his literary output, makes him a person especially privileged that betoken the history of the 20th century. A historical experience constitutes for Wat an artistic problem, literature becomes a record of his experience – a direct and authentic record. However, since writing is not only an ethnic obligation but also the inclusion into a widely understood cultural context, Wat undertakes the attempts of communicating with the world, it becomes though more and more difficult for the poet due to the lack – in his opinion – of a suitable poetic language for the description of the world. The outcome of it is Wat’s reaching the borders of the speech – to silence ([Zakułem się w pancerz myślenia...]). What Wat considered in his experience as the most important, it becomes therefore strengthened not only in his poetry but, above all, in Mój wiek [My Century] – a text not written but spoken, tape recorded; richness (“the excess of information”), digressiveness but also some breaking up, some formal “splitting up” of this text, reflects most fully heterogenous, complicated, full of suffering Wat’s experience. A vitally important in this situation is Czesław Miłosz, Wat’s interlocutor whose discreet presence, wise posing of questions orders the picture drawn chaotically by Wat.

Abstract:
Background:There is a lack of data and consensus concerning the most appropriate functional evaluation in clinical practice at the definitive prosthetic phase after lower limb amputation. Objectives:To determine among several selected functional tests the most pertinent to evaluate balance and prosthetic walking.Study Design:Validation of a diagnostic procedure.Methods:Sixty-four patients were included. Outcome measures: Timed Up and Go test, Functional Reach test (FRT), one-leg balance, tandem test, Modified Houghton Scale, Berg Balance Scale, two-minute walk test (2MW test). Correlations were assessed with the Pearson correlation coefficient and the Principal Component Analysis. Score distribution was analyzed with the Shapiro-Wilk W normality test. Receiver operating characteristic curves were drawn to identify the best predictor for the function. Results:The clinical tests correlated highly with each other. Only 2MW test and FRT did not have either a floor/ceiling effect, or a bi-modal distribution. The 2MW test was the best predictor of prosthetic walking limitations (area under the curve 0.93 (0.83–0.97), the best threshold was between 130 and 150 meters), and FRT was best for balance.Conclusions:2MW test can be proposed as the first-line clinical test. The FRT can be indicated for the specific assessment of balance disorders.Clinical relevanceThis validation of a clinical evaluation of balance and walking capacity after lower limb amputation may be useful in everyday practice to ensure in a simple and standardized way the follow-up of patients and adapt treatments – especially prosthetics – at the definitive prosthetic phase.

Abstract:
The research on the impact of alcoholism on the family indicates that alcoholism often poses threat to the wellbeing of the family, the most affected ones being the other spouse and the children. Alcoholism often poses serious risk to the emotional, cognitive, behavioural, physical and social wellbeing of the abuser, the partner and the children. Most of the researches have explored the impact of parental alcoholism on the negative outcome on psychosocial development of partners and children, very few documented studies have been carried out on the positive aspects of life such as wellbeing and futuristic hope in the children of alcoholic parents (COA). This study attempts to explore the relationship and the difference between QOL and Hope in COA and children of non-alcoholics (CONA). The study was conducted on a sample of 60 children each between the age of 12 to 15 from alcoholics and non-alcoholic parents drawn from a district of Kerala using purposive sampling technique. The measures used were QOL-BREF by WHO (1996) and Children Hope Scale (CHS) by Snyder et al. (1996). The data was first analyzed using the descriptive statistics, the normality of the data was checked using Shapiro Wilk test, Mann-Whitney U test was used to find the difference between the COA and CONA on QOL and Hope. The relationship between the variables was assed using Spearman rank correlation. The results of the study indicate that there is significant difference in QOL among the children of alcoholics and non-alcoholics. The COA demonstrated comparatively less Hope than the CONA, however there was no significant difference among them. The QOL and Hope were correlated only among the CONA. The study has implication for positive intervention for the COA, parental and school based interventions such as preventive, remedial and holistic counselling or therapy.

Abstract:
Polish-Ukrainian interstate relations covering the period beginning with the presidency of A. Duda and followed by the victory of the radical-right political party «Law and Justice» in the parliamentary elections have been analyzed. The main attention is focused on the key trends of their development and the factors affecting them. The consequences to the relations between the two countries of the emphasis that official Warsaw makes on issues of the common past, mainly Volyn tragedy, the interpretation of which on Ukrainian and Polish sides are far from identical, have been found out. The attention is drawn to the adoption of the law «On the legal status and honoring the memory of the fighters for Ukraine’s independence in the twentieth century» by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (April 9, 2015), wich caused an active discussion on the part of the official Warsaw, as well as to the similarly met in Ukraine resolution of the Sejm «On establishing the 11 of July the Memorial Day of Poles, the victims of genocide committed by the UPA» (22 July 2016). The provocations on both sides of the border organized by the interested in worsening of the relations between Warsaw and Kyiv have been highlighted. However, іt has been proven that despite the tensions caused by the often highprofile steps of the Polish and Ukrainian authorities, the strategic partnership between the two countries remains relevant. And while the first official visit of President A. Duda t to Ukraine took place only in December of 2015, the fact is, that the presence of the Polish head of state at the ceremony in Kyiv on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence on August the 24th of 2016 only six months after the election is an eloquent testimony of the importance of cooperation with Ukraine for the official Warsaw. Precisely then the presidents of the neighboring states signed a Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership.

Abstract:
Traditional food also proves as functional food wich prevents degenerative diseases. The fact shows in children's school the traditional food is less popular than modern food (nontraditional). But modern snacks have a negatively impact on health status. This habit will not occur if the children get knowledge about good nutrition. The aim of this research is to find out the effect of nutritional counseling on traditional food toward children's knowledge and attitude at Elementry School 11st in Banda Aceh. Quasi-experimental research was conducted on 33 students drawn randomly, measured before and after the extension of knowledge respondents using a questionnaire form, and data analysis used a T-test statistical tests dependent on CI: 95%. The results, the average level of knowledge of children before and after the extension is 10, 45, and 11,88. The average behavior before and after counseling was 6,73 and 7,09. In conclusion, counseling has an influence in increasing the knowledge of schoolchildren about traditional snacks but does not affect changing the behavior of elementary school children. Suggestions need to increase outreach using media in changing the behavior of elementary school children. Jajanan tradisional merupakan makanan fungsional, yang dapat mencegah beberapa jenis penyakit degenerative. Fakta menunjukkan bahwapada anak sekolah jajanan tradisional kurang digemari dibandingkan jajanan modern (non tradisional).

Abstract:
Aim/purpose – The aim of this paper is to verify whether extremely high values of mar- ket value ratios are the symptoms of informational inefficiency of the market in a weak form. The authors intend to examine whether these phenomena co-occur with each other. Design/methodology/approach – Following Bachelier’s strict random walk model, we quantified a weak-form informational market efficiency with the use of the percentage of normality tests in stock returns run (Expanded Shapiro–Wilk, D’Agostino-Pearson and Jarque–Bera), which indicate that the analyzed distribution is normal (a null hypothesis cannot be rejected). The empirical study was based on the comparison of the market value ratios (P/E and P/BV) and the informational efficiency measure at the level of particular companies, listed on the Main Market and NewConnect of the Warsaw Stock Exchange, and grouped into eight sectors. In order to do this, we analyzed scatterplots, descriptive statistics, Pearson’s and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients. The da- taset covered 214 companies (based on the assumptions made) in the period from 2016, December 31 to 2020, March 23. Findings – Results obtained indicated that, in most cases, the extremely high values of market value ratios did not co-occur with market inefficiency. Hence, the outstandingly high market value ratios do not have to be the symptoms of market inefficiency. Research implications/limitations – Following a common belief shared in the industry, but still not examined yet, this study examines the possible co-occurrence of extremely high market valuation and market inefficiency, but does not exploit it fully. The authors encourage other researchers, especially, to apply other market value ratios and to come up with their own ideas for market efficiency proxies. What is more, this study has been conducted on a relatively small market, thus the conclusions drawn from the study on the WSE should be tested on other, more developed markets. Originality/value/contribution – According to the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first trying to examine if the extremely high market value ratios are the symp- toms of the informational inefficiency of the market. Keywords: efficient market hypothesis, weak-form efficiency, market value ratios, stock markets, random walk. JEL Classification: G10, G12, G14.

"INCREASING HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS FOR PATELLAR INSTABILITY: A NATIONAL DATABASE STUDY FROM 2004-2017." Abstract:
Background: Patellar instability refers to subluxation or dislocation of the patella out of the trochlear groove of the femur. Patellar instability is classically thought to be most common in adolescent girls. Risk factors for patellar instability described in the literature include female sex, race, sports participation, personal or family history of patellar instability, ligamentous laxity, trochlear dysplasia, and other anatomic factors. However, the epidemiology of patellar instability is not fully characterized, as some studies have produced conflicting information or been drawn from limited populations. In this study, we used the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) database to examine trends in admissions for patellar instability throughout the United States. We believe that a national pediatric hospital database will help to illustrate trends in the epidemiology of patellar instability. We hypothesized that there would be an increasing rate of patellar instability admissions in recent years. Secondarily, we examined how demographic factors and insurance status relate to admissions for patellar instability. Methods: This study used Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) which is a comprehensive administrative database in which more than 45 pediatric hospitals participate, including not-for-profit, freestanding, and tertiary care pediatric centers associated with the Children’s Hospital Association. Patients with ICD 9 & 10 codes 8363, 8364, 71785, M221.0, S83.001, S83.002, S83.003, S83.004, S83.005, and S83.006, were abstracted from PHIS. We abstracted patient characteristics such as age, sex, race, primary source of payment, and discharge year, as well as hospital characteristics such as hospital city. We included all patients admitted with patellofemoral dislocations that were reported in the PHIS database between January 1, 2004 and April 30, 2017. A Shapiro-Wilk test was conducted to determine normality of the dataset, along with a subsequent Pearson correlation to examine the relationship between number of patellar dislocation admissions over the years studied, adjusted for number of hospitals in the study. The relationship between age at admission and sex was examined using a two sample T-test and a linear regression analysis. All statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics Software Version 23.0 (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY, USA). Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: An estimated total of 25,413 admissions for patellar instability were identified by the search of the PHIS database; 15,444 (60.8%) were female patients and 9,966 (39.2%) were male. The adjusted number of admissions per reporting hospital significantly increased over the years studied (r=0.775, p<0.001), from 14.5 admissions per reporting hospital in 2004 to 86.0 admissions per reporting hospital in 2016. Males were admitted for patellar instability at a significantly older age than females in the data extracted from the PHIS database (14.36 ± 0.23 vs. 13.58 ± 0.20 years, p<0.001). Of all patellar instability admissions, 55.0% were white, 20.4% were black, 1.7% were Asian, and 22.9% were unknown race. A larger number of patellar instability admissions occurred in patients with insurance status other than Medicaid in every year that data was collected. Conclusions/Significance: Based on a PHIS database search, pediatric hospital admissions for patellar instability are steadily increasing. The majority of patients admitted for patellar instability are female, white, and have insurance other than Medicaid. Males admitted for patellar instability tended to be older than females admitted for the same. [Table: see text][Figure: see text][Figure: see text][Figure: see text][Figure: see text]

Abstract:
Background: Follicular lymphoma (FL) is the most common indolent lymphoma and is generally characterized by prolonged survival with multiple relapses throughout the disease course. There is no standard of care as to the initial choice or sequencing of treatments for relapsed disease. Novel agents approved in the relapsed setting include lenalidomide in combination with rituximab (R2) and PI3K inhibitors (PI3Ki) including idelalisib, duvelisib, and copanlisib. However, there are no prospective data comparing the safety/efficacy of these novel agents to guide treatment selection. We aimed to examine the characteristics and outcomes of patients with relapsed follicular lymphoma treated with these novel agents. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of adult patients with FL treated with commercially-available novel agents at 10 US academic cancer centers. Patients were excluded if they received one of these therapies as first line therapy or for the treatment of transformed disease. Treatment with lenalidomide or PI3Ki was determined by the treating physician, as was the decision to incorporate monoclonal antibody (mAb). For patients who received both classes of novel agent, baseline and treatment characteristics were grouped by first novel class used. The Fisher's Exact test was used to compare categorical variables and the Mann Whitney U test for continuous variables. Progression-free survival (PFS) was defined as time from the initiation of the first novel agent to progression of disease (POD), either FL or transformed disease, or death from any cause. Overall survival (OS) was defined as time from the initiation of the first novel agent to death from any cause. Outcomes were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using the log-rank test. Results: 98 patients were included. Available baseline characteristics at diagnosis are described in Table 1. The median time from the end of the last FL treatment to the start of the first novel agent was 12 months (range 0-79). The first novel agent was lenalidomide +/-mAb in 49% (n=48) of the patients and a PI3Ki +/- mAb in 51% (n=50) of patients. Idelalisib was the most commonly used PI3Ki (n=47) followed by copanlisib (n=2) and duvelisib (n=1). The median number of therapies prior to the first novel agent was 2 (range 1-8) and not significantly different between treatment classes. Reason for discontinuation of novel agent was significantly different between groups with greater discontinuations due to toxicity (40% vs 28%) and transformed disease (15% vs. 3%) for the PI3Ki ± mAb group vs. lenalidomide ± mAb group, respectively (p = 0.02). The median PFS and OS for the entire cohort was 10 months (95% CI 7.6-14) and 120 months (95% CI, 49-NA), respectively (Figure A). When comparing outcomes to current FDA approvals-lenalidomide + mAb (n=43) versus PI3Ki monotherapy (PI3Ki, n=38), the median PFS was significantly longer in the lenalidamide + mAb group compared to the PI3Ki group (15 vs. 6 months, p=0.016), as was the OS (120 vs. 37 months, p=0.002, respectively, Figure B). Conclusions: In this multi-center analysis, despite multiple relapses, the median survival for FL patients treated with novel agents was 120 months from the initiation of the first novel therapy. With the caveat of retrospective comparison, lenalidomide + mAb (i.e. R2) appears superior to PI3Ki as first novel agent in the relapsed setting with the recognition that a high proportion of patients discontinued PI3Ki due to toxicity. Because the majority of the patients received idelalisib conclusions cannot be drawn about alternative PI3Ki which may have lower toxicity profiles or intermittent dosing strategies, allowing for safer and more prolonged treatment. Future prospective studies are needed to directly compare these agents and determine optimal sequencing of therapies. Abstract:
It is not at all a novelty the fact that Schopenhauer has traced deep connections between both the ethical and the aesthetical realm. This particular aspect has not been overlooked by his contemporary scholars. Nevertheless, they failed to see a special connection: the one that allows linking Schopenhauer´s aesthetic theory with his doctrine of the acquired character. Robert Wicks possesses the merit of having drawn attention on that. In this paper I will attempt accordingly to focus on the connection between character and aesthetics, taking into consideration Robert Wicks’ interpretation. Nevertheless, the latter is problematic and is then subject to some criticisms. The aim of this paper is to make explicit these criticisms in order to assess, at the end, the plausibility of Wicks’ understanding of this topic.

"Correlations of water iodine concentration to earlier goitre frequency in Sweden—an iodine sufficient country with long-term iodination of table salt." Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine 24, no. 1 (December 2019). http://dx.doi.org/10.1186/s12199-019-0821-9.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Before iodination of Swedish table salt in 1936, iodine deficiency resulting in goitre and hypothyroidism was common. Sweden has become iodine sufficient, as shown in a national survey in 2007, proving its iodination fortification programme effective for the general population. The objective of this study was to collect drinking water from water treatment plants nationally and test if water iodine concentration (WIC) correlated to urinary iodine concentration (UIC) of school-aged children in a national survey 2007 to former goitre frequency in 1929 and to thyroid volume data in 2007. Methods In 2012, 166 treatment plants, located in 57% (166 of 290) of all Swedish municipalities, were asked to collect drinking water samples of approximately 10 ml. In 2007, tap water samples of the same volume were collected from 30 randomly selected schools for the national survey. Analysis of WIC was done in both treatment plants in 2012 (n = 166) and tap water in 2007 (n = 30). The correlation of WIC to the children’s UIC and thyroid volume after iodination was tested based on data from the national survey in 2007. The association of WIC to former goitre frequency was tested based on pre-iodination data, derived from a map of goitre frequency drawn in 1929. Results The median WIC from water treatment plants was 4.0 μg/L (range 0–27 μg/L). WIC was similar in coastal and inland areas, for both ground and surface water. WIC correlated with historical goitre areas and was lower in the goitre areas than in non-goitre areas (p < 0.001). WIC in the same municipalities as the schools correlated with the UIC of children (p < 0.01), but not with their thyroid volume. Conclusions WIC still contributes to iodine nutrition in Sweden, but iodination overrides the goitre effect.

Phuong, Nguyen Tuan, and Nguyen Anh Tuan. "Study on the Behavior of Geosynthetic-Reinforced Pile-Supported Embankments in Soft Ground Improvement Solutions." Journal of Southwest Jiaotong University 55, no. 5 (2020). http://dx.doi.org/10.35741/issn.0258-2724.55.5.23.

Abstract:
Embankments on soft ground often encounter many problems such as settlement, slip, and deformation that exceed the permitted limit. In recent years, a new type of foundation called "geosynthetic-reinforced pile-supported embankments" has been used. Until now, although the behavior of this foundation type has been analyzed and certain results have been presented in literature, calculation methods do not allow geotechnical engineers to calculate the results accurately. This study builds up a field experiment model to investigate the impacts of arching effects in the sand buffer layer on pile heads to increase the load transfer on the pile caps. The results indicate that the stress distribution on the pile cap is 10.48 times higher than the stress on the surrounding soft soil. Hence, the ground improvement method using piles and geosynthetic reinforcement can be applied to roadbeds and industrial warehouses on soft soil conditions, which helps to shorten the construction time compared to other ground treatment methods such as preloading, vacuum pumps, wick drains, etc.

Abstract:
: Digital and social media have transformed the field of medicine. They are powerful tools that academic and non-academic physicians and healthcare providers are using to influence others, promote ideas, obtain knowledge, disseminate research and communicate with others. The history of advocacy for women in medicine and the role of social media in influencing the choice of women to choose Cardiology as a career and its role in advocacy for women in cardiology (WIC) have been reviewed. It has changed the way cardiologists learn, educate, and interact with each other. Social media has proven especially useful in advocating for WIC, but whether it can help improve the numbers of female doctors going into Cardiology remains to be seen. In addition to encouraging women to pursue cardiology, social media has drawn attention to key women’s rights issues affecting practicing female cardiologists.

Zondag, H. J. (2013) Narcissism and boredom revisited: an exploration of correlates of overt and covert narcissism among Dutch university students. Psychological Reports: Mental & Physical Health, 112, 2, 563–576. On pages 566–567, Hypothesis 1. through the end of Hypothesis 3., should be corrected to read as follows: Hypothesis 1. There will be a positive correlation between covert narcissism and boredom, as was shown in research by Wink and Donahue (1995, 1997). Covert narcissism has also been negatively correlated to psychological wellbeing (Rose, 2002). Since boredom is closely related to a lack of psychological well-being, a positive correlation is also expected between boredom and covert narcissism. Hypothesis 2. Boredom may also be expected to be positively correlated with overt narcissism, as Wink and Donahue have found (1995, 1997). However, an alternative hypothesis can be drawn up for the relation between overt narcissism and boredom. Overt narcissism has several times been found to be positively correlated with psychological well-being (Rose, 2002), which, in turn, is correlated with the absence of boredom (Vodanovich, 2003). A negative correlation between overt narcissism and boredom therefore seems to be another possibility. Hypothesis 3. In regard to the correlations between overt and covert narcissism on the one hand and boredom on the other, no sex differences are to be expected. Correlations between narcissism and other variables are generally found to be equal for men and women (Campbell & Foster, 2007). So there will be no sex differences in correlations between narcissism and other study variables. Table 1 was published with correct data, but should be aligned as follows: [Table: see text]
