Yardley, I. "Wider utility of mission command." Thesis, Department of Engineering Systems and Management, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1826/4261.

Full text
Abstract:
For many years academic and business literature have cited military sources as examples of leadership excellence. Central to the British Military’s leadership Command philosophy is the concept of Mission Command. This thesis examines the utility of Mission Command1 beyond the confines of the British Military. The work draws on several well-established academic fields of literature to deconstruct the underlying principles supporting the utility of Mission Command and builds a theoretical model which contends that individuals using it are better prepared to cope with change in an emerging context. The identification of an under-examined research community gives rich insight into the transference and adaptation of key military methodologies. The work critically examines underlying military concepts within a non-military environment and proposes that Mission Command has wider utility. The findings identify how individuals have applied and adapted the key concepts to make the methodology relevant for their own context whilst retaining many of the guiding principles.

Abstract:
German foreign policy is in the midst of a far-reaching transformation. Contrary to disciplinary expectations, this process is neither properly captured by descriptions in the liberal tradition („Europeanisation“, „Civilian Power“) nor by Realist expectations that Germany is doomed to „remilitarise“ and/or „renationalise“. However, the key term of foreign policy discourse, „normalisation“, is an unmistakable code, signalling a rediscovery of traditional Realpolitik practices which fit Germany’s current environment. The paper argues that rather than merely playing the role of an obedient disciple of Realpolitik socialisers, Germany ought to rehabilitate the foreign policy tradition of the Bonn Republic in support of an active Idealpolitik transformation of its environment. The article serves as a starting point for a debate on German foreign policy in the upcoming issues of WeltTrends.

Liu, M. "Wider application of additions in self-compacting concrete." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2009. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/19028/.

Full text
Abstract:
Compared to normally vibrated concrete (NVC), self-compacting concrete (SCC) possesses enhanced qualities and improves productivity and working conditions due to the elimination of compaction. SCC generally has a higher powder content than NVC and thus it is necessary to replace some of the cement by additions to achieve an economical and durable concrete. The established benefits of using low volumes of fly ash in SCC, high volumes of fly ash in NVC and the search for uses of waste glass led to the research on the possibilities of use higher fly ash contents than hitherto and ground glass as an addition in SCC whilst maintaining satisfactory properties. Mix design methods, tests, target properties and constituent materials were selected. This was followed by investigating the influence of fly ash and ground glass on the mortar fraction of the SCC and then using these results to produce concrete mixes with the target fresh properties. Hardened concrete of these mixes were measured and the relationships between these investigated. The results show that for constant filling ability of the SCC, replacement of cement with fly ash or ground glass requires an increase in water/powder ratio and a reduction in superplasticiser dosage. Both additions degraded the passing ability, consistence retention and hardened properties but not to a prohibitive extent. SCC with up 80% cement replaced by fly ash or glass volume ratio of 6.4% is possible and the material properties of SCC are similar to those of NVC. Also the UCL method of mix design was extended to higher coarse aggregate contents and different additions. The project can lead to the use of higher volume fly ash and ground glass in SCC, thus widening the types of additions available for SCC, saving landfill and reduce CO2 emissions by the use of less cement.

Ellington, Michael. "Essays in money, liquidity and the wider economy." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2016. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3004464/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigates the impact of money and liquidity for the wider economy. Chapter 1 dicusses the primary motivations of this work, introduces the content of the chapters, and briefly positions each essay. Following the brief overview, Chapter 2 uses tools from the classical theory of inflation for UK data. We provide an empirical comparison between broad money and Divisia money aggregates from both a domestic and global scale for two measures of UK inflation. We find that global liquidity yields inflationary pressures in the UK over and above the impact of domestic monetary conditions and spare capacity. Our non-linear models show that monetary effects are dependent on the state of domestic liquidity within the economy. Our empirical findings point against the immediate risk of strong inflationary pressures. In Chapter 3, we provide a comprehensive reduced-form and structural analysis of evolving macroeconomic dynamics using theoretically founded Divisia money aggregates and a time series spanning the Great Recession. We fit a Bayesian time-varying parameter VAR model with stochastic volatility to US and UK data from 1979 to 2015. Models using Divisia money growth rates pseudo-forecast GDP growth and inflation with a higher precision than simple-sum aggregates up to a 2-year horizon. Structural variance decompositions reveal that monetary policy shocks during the Great Recession contribute the lion's share of variation in real GDP growth and inflation volatility. Chapter 4 examines the dynamic impact of liquidity shocks resonating in stock and housing markets on real GDP growth. We fit a Bayesian time-varying parameter VAR model with stochastic volatility to US data from 1970 to 2014. GDP becomes highly sensitive to house market liquidity shocks as disruptions in the sector start to emerge, yet more resilient to stock market liquidity shocks throughout time. We provide substantial evidence in favour of asymmetric responses of GDP growth both across the business cycle, and among business cycle troughs. Stock and house market liquidity shocks, on average, explain 15% and 36% of the variation in real GDP growth during the Great Recession respectively. Finally, Chapter 5 provides concluding comments and suggestions for future research.

Hajizada, Mukhtar. "Complex regionalisation in the wider Black Sea area." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/27769.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides a case study analysis of regionalisation in the wider Black Sea area as a contribution to the study of regionalism. Taking 1992 as the starting point, interviews, official documents and personal observation are used to analyse the integrative processes by focusing on the areas of regional security, institutionalisation, intraregional trade and the role of the EU. Confrontation and cooperation are inter-related, and security imperatives and the lack of a sense of (security) community affect the efficiency level of the regional institutions and prevent increased regional cooperation. Nevertheless, the EU has enhanced a sense of community in the wider Black Sea area (WBSA) although mainly in the western part of it. Previous studies on regionalism have mostly dealt with regionalisms among allies or countries that seem to genuinely interact as partner countries, rather than examining the regionalist project of a group of states including adversaries with political-military problems between themselves. This thesis is thus original in focusing on a strange phenomenon that cooperation is going on at the same time as tension and conflict between states. A further sign of complexity is that many of the instances of cooperation such as economic are going on outside the remit of the regional organisations which have been established – such as the Black Sea Economic Cooperation. As this regional arrangement resembles an example of regional integration but cannot easily be analysed by the customary approaches of regionalism, the idea of ‘complex regionalism’ is proposed to denote the complex interplay among the participating actors in the WBSA. The summary contribution is to show that it is still possible to have regionalisation of states where some of them simultaneously engage in conflicts with each other, although this is likely to stunt the process and the extent of regional integration.

Lategan, L. O. K. ""Research education" : a concept wider than postgraduate supervision?" Journal for New Generation Sciences, Vol 12, Issue 2: Central University of Technology, Free State, Bloemfontein, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11462/660.

Abstract:
Published Article
This paper promotes the argument that although conventional postgraduate supervision is useful to address the research skills and competences of postgraduate students, a wider perspective is nonetheless required to educate and train any researcher (including postgraduate students upon their entrée into the world of research) to comprehend the demands made by research and how best these demands can be addressed. It is in this context that a more comprehensive concept of research education is promoted. The argument is based on the perspective that methodological understanding alone is not sufficient to assist a researcher in meeting the expectations of a research project. Research education refers to the training of researchers to be responsive to the research value chain. This includes aspects such as the formal research process, the importance of research ethics and integrity regarding the research project, the imperative to promote scholarship in research and the application of research results through technology transfer, innovation and incubation. Research education sensitizes the researcher to look beyond the scope of the academic research project and to extend the research to activities such as technology transfer, innovation, commercialization and partnerships. The aim of research education is to promote the wide range of aspects contributing to the understanding of what counts as research and its application.

Potts, Becky. "Disability following traumatic brain injury : considering the wider context." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2017. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/88349/.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis documents a qualitative exploration of some of the wider contextual issues relating to disability following traumatic brain injury (TBI). There is a relatively high prevalence of long term disability following TBI. Family members often provide informal care and can experience negative psychological outcomes as a result. The systematic literature review in section one presents a metasynthesis of 15 qualitative papers exploring the experience of caregiving following TBI. Negative emotional reactions were experienced, due to changes to their injured relative and to their own lives. Caregivers were more able to cope if they could develop a good understanding of the person with TBI. Importantly, this review noted that families experienced a sense of wider supports crumbling beneath them following discharge form hospital. Lack of material, social, and professional supports intensified experiences of distress, as caregivers had fewer options. The findings support the need to address wider issues alongside any individual intervention. Many people with TBI need to claim state financial benefits due to disability. The Work Capability Assessment (WCA) was introduced in the UK to assess ability to work and decide upon benefits received. The WCA process has been associated with increased mental health difficulties and has been criticised for neglecting contextual factors. The assessment may not be suited to the complexity of impairment following TBI. The research paper in section two explores the experiences of nine adults with TBI regarding the WCA. The data was analysed using critical narrative analysis. Participants experienced the assessment as distressing and saw the WCA as neglecting important functional difficulties. They experienced multiple barriers to the process. There is a need for the WCA to adopt a biopsychosocial approach to assessment of disability, and to make reasonable adjustments for people with TBI.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Thailand’s economy has gone through a quick development during the past two decades As a result of the economic crisis in 1997, His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej introduced the philosophy of sufficiency economy (SE). SE is built upon a model which can be used every day, notonly during crises, to strengthen the economy within the country and the society. Due to the worldwide attention on the philosophy it is interesting to research how applicable SE is in Sweden or generally worldwide. The aim of the field study and the thesis is to obtain a contemporary interpretation of the applicability of sufficiency economy. The approach of the field study consisted of four main steps; feasibility study, research tool, the field study procedure and evaluation. The study includes a literature study with a combination of interviews with key persons, a multinational company situated in Bangkok and Thai students. The intention of the selection was to obtain a conceptual interpretation of SE in relation to the interviewed people. The answers of the different groups were first put in their own context, and then a comparison was made in order to make the analysis.Several different opinions were uncovered regarding the interpretation of SE. It is necessary to interpret it at an individual level. The rational decision making and following the middle way is important to achieve a balanced life. However it is a knowledge gap within theThai society where it is important to have a stable government and the right spokesman of SE.

Ray, Nicholas Martin. "Household consumption in ancient economies : Pompeii and the wider Roman world." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/8465.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis draws upon modern consumption theory to provide an interpretive research framework for examining material culture and consumer behaviour in the Roman world. This approach is applied to data from twelve Pompeian households to identify patterns of consumption, materiality, and motivations for the acquisition of commodities. Analysis of the assemblage data is performed at multiple levels comprising weighted ranking of goods and the application of Correspondence Analysis, with investigation performed on both functional categories and artefact types. Setting the results against theories of consumption and rationality, consumer choice in the ancient world is examined. From this detailed examination of twelve Pompeian houses, ‘core’ and ‘fringe’ commodities and recurring suites of goods are identified. Non-luxury goods are given particular attention as they provide information concerning the consumption of everyday utility objects. This approach also allows the evaluation of statements about the state of occupation of houses in sites such as Pompeii. The results validate this form of analysis as an important tool for assessing the role of the consumer in economies of the ancient world, moving beyond concepts of conspicuous consumption and group values. This research provides a structured interpretive framework upon which varied archaeological data can be superimposed to interrogate the motivations behind commodity acquisition. This research also raises the potential for future consumption modelling using multivariate statistics. Through the application of consumer theory to Roman data, discussion of ancient economies is shifted away from a focus on production to one of demand, choice, and sites of consumption.

This short Viewpoint paper considers the role and value of conference recommendations in shaping the field of environmental education. It explores the social politics, and often contested nature, of conference recommendations and their institutional histories, arguing that the act of producing conference recommendations forms part of the practices of new social movements. The paper recommends historicising conference recommendations and OEcross readings‚ to consider changing discourses and new developments in the field. Accompanying the short Viewpoint paper, are two sets of recently produced conference recommendations, one from the 4th International Environmental Education Conference held in Ahmedabad, India, and the other from the 1st International Conference on Mainstreaming Environment and Sustainability in African Universities held in Nairobi, Kenya.

Beaumont, C. Mark. "Musical synaesthesia in synaesthetes and its manifestation as a wider phenomenon." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2004. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14856/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has been titled 'Musical Synaesthesia in Synaesthetes and its Manifestation as a Wider Phenomenon', in order to give an indication of the broadness of the subject area that it addresses. It looks at ways in which types of association normally associated with one of the five sensory channels sometimes make connections with, and produce stimulation of, any combination of the other four. Although the thesis touches on most known perspectives of this large topic, all of which are interconnected, it focuses on just two of these areas. Firstly, it deals with a condition which affects a small minority of the population known as ·synaesthesia'. 'Synaesthesia' is derived from the Greek combining syn meaning to combine and aesthises meaning perceived by the senses. This word was coined in the 1870s, probably by Fechner. People with synaesthesia experience involuntary sensations that do not exist in the external world but which are triggered by sensations which belong to another sensory channel. There are, for example, synaesthetes that who hear sounds as colours, taste textures, or hear odours. The first of these three examples is, by far, the most common type of synaesthesia and is especiaJIy relevant to this thesis since it deals with musical synaesthesia Musical synaesthesia usually involves strong and specific colours in connection with musical sounds. This introduces the thesis' second focal point, that of music. Coloured sensations in the absence of coloured stimuli are especially frequent as responses to music and musical material is used in this thesis to test such responses. It seems likely that Messiaen was a synaesthetic musician, and possible that Skryabin was also. In a more general way, the notion of music being coloured is not confined exclusively to synaesthetes. Numerous non-synaesthetic people maintain that certain keys, intervals, chords or sounds of certain musical instruments are coloured. Given that there are more non-synaesthetic people than there are synaesthetic people, it seems likely that the former group are predominantly responsible for the gravitation towards coloured music and towards musical paintings during the second half of the second half of the nineteenth century. Therefore, the term 'synaesthesia' might arguably be used to define this phenomenon with as much validity as it is used to define the neurological condition. It is from the above standpoint that we can gain a greater understanding of a certain prevalent spirit of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century's 'age of synaesthesia'. Although this standpoint is not convincing from a neurological point of view, it is relevant to the study of the internal worlds of several musicians, writers and painters. This is my justification for writing about synaesthesia as a wider phenomenon.

Watts, Kevin. "Planning for biodiversity in the wider countryside : recognising opportunities, overcoming barriers." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2001. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/3034/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is an increasing imperative to conserve the biological diversity of the world to ensure its future viability and integrity. The traditional approach in England has been to protect a series of small, isolated sites. Recent research has demonstrated the inadequacies of this approach, suggesting a need to direct energies more towards conservation in the surrounding wider countryside. However, there are considerable difficulties associated with achieving biodiversity objectives in the wider countryside, as there is a heavy reliance on non-statutory planning mechanisms. Whereas solutions to biodiversity conservation have generally been seen to lie in the realm of natural science, this thesis recognises the need for a better understanding of the people, policies and activities involved in the process. It therefore couples social science perspectives with an understanding of ecological science principles, in order to investigate the issues affecting the implementation of biodiversity conservation plans in three case studies in south west England. By employing a range of qualitative techniques this research: defines a number of conservation objectives for the study areas; uses conservation objectives as a basis for conducting a content analysis of biodiversity planning documents, in order to uncover potential implementation opportunities and barriers; presents the results in an analytical framework; explores and refines these through a series of semi-structured interviews with key biodiversity actors. This research uncovers a complex set of interacting issues. These issues relate to partnership styles of working, building agreement and trust, variable levels of knowledge about habitat and species in the wider countryside, restoration techniques, indicative strategies, strategic targeting of resources, financial support to farmers and other land managers, the role of monitoring, and policy responses to recent agricultural crises. The results attest to the importance of a social-scientific understanding of biodiversity planning, in particular, of the forces which drive or obstruct the implementation of local solutions. The thesis concludes with a number of recommendations, based on original evidence, aimed at improving the implementation of biodiversity plans in the wider countryside.

Abstract:
The premiss of this thesis is naturalism: viz., that psychological facts, whilst not reducible to, are determined by, physical facts. Pace Davidson's anomalism of the mental, the Author argues that token-token psycho-physical identity presupposes that the inferential inter-relations between psychological states are projectably mirrored by physical dispositional relations between those states. The Author aims to regiment our folk-psychological explanations because, he argues, we have warrant to apply the conceptual contents of our self-applied indices to the states so indexed, rather than treating those conceptual contents merely as indices of internal states. That warrant arises from the determinate conceptual content of our home language - pace the well-known arguments of Quine, Putnam and Davidson. The Author also aims to show that only a functional system wide enough to include the objects which we perceive and manipulate can generate those conceptual contents, not a narrow functional system which terminates at or before the bodily envelope. Field's subjective semantics for classical logic are used to show that narrow functionalism cannot account for the sense of 'exists', nor, adapting work of Hintikka and Rantala, for our quantifier rules, and narrow functionalism leads to brute psycho-physical correlations between sensational properties and inner physical states. Fodor's formality condition does not preclude mental operations having access to the semantic contents of mental states. And the Author argues for a wider functionalism which is blind to the particular identities and differences of res, but is not blind to their observable properties. The Author develops an account of quantifying into attitudes and quasi-binding variables in content clauses without inducing transparency, thus enabling individual attitudes to be linked up and mutually oriented in action explaining complexes. Such quantification is extensionally defined so as to fit an otherwise standard truth definition. (Kripke's puzzle about Pierre's beliefs is thereby solved.) The Author shows how any individual episode in a person's psychological history can be treated narrowly, as an hallucination, without explanatory loss, but provided enough of his episodes are explained widely, quantifying over res, sufficiently to account for the conceptual contents of all episodes.

Abstract:
This study examines the characteristics and setting of the six hillforts of the Clwydian Range in north east Wales and considers other hills and hillforts within the surrounding area. It provides an assessment of the hillforts of much of north Wales and the borderlands as a group, to define connections or regional variations, in order to aid understanding of their function. Sites have been investigated through the use of Geographical Information Systems and viewshed analysis to consider the extent of view, the features visible and intervisibility. The use of a control sample of non-hillfort sites considers why some hills were chosen to be hillforts but others not. Interrogation of the data to identify what the monument can see, not just how much, is fundamental in the interpretation of site selection and position. Architectural features and dating evidence have been documented and examined. Former radiocarbon dating has been scrutinised and recalibrated to ensure consistency. A theme of stone, or the illusion of, is dominant across the study area and, despite previous reports, not limited to Gwynedd and a small number of outliers. Entrances and their evolution are distinctive to north east Wales and the borders, with possible links to northern England. The hillforts of the Clwydian Range are distinctive with regards to their proximity and longevity, with multi-phase, multi-period use. In contrast to 'Central Place Theory', there is not an obvious 'main' hillfort dominating or suppressing the others. Instead, awareness of each other may have complimented their situation and therefore the area flourished. Changes in the hillforts' characteristics are essential in understanding the evolution of their function throughout the Iron Age; from initial community links and cultivation, to control and finally to conservation, which is a tradition which has continued to this day.

Tew, Simon. "Organisational learning in the Welsh government : an exploratory analysis and wider implications." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2013. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/58702/.

Full text
Abstract:
It has been recognised that organisational learning (OL) possesses considerable potential for developing workers and, through them, organisations. Although its relevance to the public sector has been acknowledged, a relatively small amount of empirical work has been undertaken. Where it has been, emphasis on learning embedded in daily practices has been lacking. This study fills a significant gap by providing a holistic and empirically-based exploration of OL within the public sector based on three diverse case studies in the Welsh Government. This study illustrates how OL practices in the Welsh Government emerged from mediations between individuals and six structures – namely physical, accountability, development, management intervention, workplace social and work task-based. OL is shown to be a locally formulated and pluralist phenomenon, based on the capacities of individuals involved and the highly nuanced dynamics created by and among the six structures. A new framework for the comprehensive investigation and analysis of OL emerges from the analysis. Some key findings from the study are that learning involving identifying and assessing new ways of doing things was neither practised nor required in all areas, that engagement in change during the undertaking of day-to-day work activities was a stimulant for learning, that different work tasks presented different possibilities for making and remedying mistakes, that the absence of a target-driven environment was an important enabler for staff to pursue off-the-job learning, that different work tasks presented varying opportunities for engaging with people, that engagement with people tended to happen only when staff felt that it would result in them being able to perform their roles more effectively, that inter-OL was not generally part of working life and that efforts to capture knowledge were generally not made unless there was a clear purpose or value seen for doing so.

Abstract:
The fatal "eye disease" that afflicts Realists and Neorealists, and even infects some self-styled Institutionalists and Constructivists, has several causes. In his polemical essay, the author defines these as historicism, the legalistic bias, the underestimation of non-state actors and the overestimation of the state as such. Discussing the linkage between loyality, ethnicy, and politics, he strongly argues for recognition of the fact that the world is groping for new political arrangements for which we simply do not have the appropriate ideas or words to describe. In the future, the range of political identities and loyalities in the global culture of "fragmegration" will extend beyond traditional multiculturalism.

Johnstone, Barbara Ann. "Teachers working together in the Wider Opportunities instrumental programme in the primary school." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2016. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/18074/.

Full text
Abstract:
The context for this qualitative case study is the primary school classroom and the Wider Opportunities instrumental teaching programme. The rational for the research is based on the premise that there is real potential for professional collaboration in the teaching of music when two bodies of knowledge are brought together, combining the class teacher’s expertise in pedagogy and the visiting instrumentalist’s expertise in music. The study investigates the nature of the professional collaboration between the generalist class teachers and the visiting instrumentalists in five primary schools in an outer London borough. The theoretical bases developed from the literature are framed by the concept of collaboration; the theories of behaviourism, progressivism and constructivism and their contribution to learning and teaching; and the writings of Swanwick (1979, 1988, 1994, 1999) on music education. The methodology used to examine the experiences of class teachers, head teachers, pupils, instrumental teachers, associates connected to the local music education hub and experts from the field of music education comprised questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and the observation of twenty Wider Opportunities lessons over a twelve month period and analysed using thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke, 2006, 2012; Howitt and Cramer, 2011). The themes that emerged from the data included detached collaboration; uncertainty about the aims of the Wider Opportunities programme; incomplete discourses of music education; and missed opportunities for professional learning. The key findings from this study identified that rich collaborative practices were an underused resource in the schools. Several factors prevented meaningful collaborations, including a crowded curriculum which limited the time available for curriculum planning and professional discussions, and the status given to arts and music education in primary schools. Although rich collaborative practices were not fully embedded in the case study schools, there was evidence to suggest that some teachers would have welcomed closer collaboration. The Conclusions to the study highlighted the need for closer communication between the music education hubs and the schools involved in the Wider Opportunities programme in order to clarify the aims and approaches. Furthermore, the promotion of professional collaboration in the Wider Opportunities programme should be strengthened in schools by providing more opportunity for professional discussions between teachers and the sharing of expertise.

Barclay, Gordon J. "The first farmers : the Neolithic of east-central Scotland in its wider context." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30149.

Full text
Abstract:
The research reported upon had one aim: to create a modern account of the inception and development of farming in lowland east-central Scotland (defined as the old local authority Regions of Tayside and Fife, and the adjacent parts of the Regions of Central and Grampian), taking particular account of potential inter-regional differences, and in a coherent national interpretative context. There are seven specific objectives: 1. to reveal and explore the extent and diversity of the remains of Neolithic occupation in the area, in part through creating corpora of site types 2. to document and explain the long histories of use and change on Neolithic/early Bronze Age ceremonial/burial sites 3. to set the rich ceremonial/burial evidence into a more rounded settlement and environmental context 4. to assess the evidence for, and establish the extent and nature of inter-regional variation throughout the Neolithic 5. to place the development of locally appropriate explanatory models in the history of archaeological thought 6. to set the study of the archaeology of lowland Scotland in a wider historical/cultural context 7. to identify and quantify the threats to the survival of the Neolithic archaeological resource The research was undertaken through the gathering of new information in the field, reinterpreting the results of older fieldwork in the light of more recent understanding, and through survey of relevant archaeological, historical and political literature.

Ayima, Kwesi. "Counter-Ideology as a Wider Strategy for Defeating the Boko Haram Terrorist Group." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/7854.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a need to address current military strategies to defeat the resilience of the Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) group. The purpose of this qualitative study was to provide a counter-ideology framework as an alternative strategy to defeat the group. The relational/vengeance and relative deprivation theories provided the theoretical foundation for the study, and the research question addressed the extent to which counter-ideology strategies can be instituted to defeat the BHT group. Data were collected through semi structured interviews from 20 participants who were Muslim clerics, community leaders, and military personnel, and data were analyzed using Nvivo software. The themes for the study were developed using a content analysis approach. The findings indicated that the resilience of Boko Haram was due to the group's ability to maintain an ideological consistency with the extreme version of Jihadi-Salafism. Thus, there is a need to develop an effective reconciliatory national security strategy that is focused on counter-ideology policies to augment the ongoing military strategy. Given that counter-ideology offers a nonmilitary counterterrorism approach, it can deescalate the security situation in Northeast Nigeria, which can lead to socioeconomic benefits for the youth in Nigeria.
