Abstract:
Abstract Several concepts and principles advanced by Widmark over 50 years ago are briefly compared with results of recently published experimental work. His conclusions--that breath alcohol analysis can lead to overestimates of actual blood alcohol concentration, and that +/- 2 standard deviations about the average should be used to estimate certain pharmacokinetic parameters for medicolegal alcohol determinations--are supported by these more-recent experimental results.

Abstract:
Hangover resistance may be linked to an increased risk of continuing harmful drinking behaviours as well as involvement in potentially dangerous daily activities such as driving while hungover, mainly due to the absence of negative consequences (i.e., hangover symptoms) the day after alcohol consumption. The aim of this study was to examine the occurrence of claimed alcohol hangover resistance relative to estimated blood alcohol concentration (eBAC). A total of 1198 participants completed an online survey by answering questions regarding their demographics, alcohol consumption and occurrence of hangover. Two methods were used to calculate eBAC, one based on the modified Widmark Equation (N = 955) and the other from an equation averaging the total body water (TBW) estimates of Forrest, Watson, Seidl, Widmark and Ulrich (males only) (N = 942). The percentage of participants who claimed to be hangover resistant decreased rapidly with increasing eBAC and only a small number of hangover resistant drinkers remained at higher eBACs. Comparisons of the eBACs calculated by the two methods revealed significantly higher BACs when using the modified Widmark equation. These findings suggest that additional research for eBAC calculations is needed to improve accuracy and comprehensiveness of these equations for future alcohol hangover research.

In South Africa of the 1950s, night-clubs frequented by blacks were dangerous places. Fights, shootings and stabbings were commonplace, and some shows even ended in riots. Gangsters were an important catalyst for such events: they terrorised musicians and patrons alike. Miriam Makeba, whose singing career began in the 1950s, remembers what it was like:[T]hese men come in, sit in front, and pull out their bottles. They put these before them on the table. Then they take out their guns and put these in front of them on the table, too. We are all supposed to look, and we can't help ourselves: We do. They are like actors, these gangsters, although they do not play. In South Africa, movies are taken very seriously, and there is a movie in the cinemas now in which Richard Widmark plays a hoodlum. They call him Styles, and he dresses up in a hat, a belted jacket, and those Florsheim shoes. The black gangsters go out and dress just like him. In the movie, Richard Widmark eats an apple after each of his crimes. So, all the African hoodlums have gone and gotten apples, too. I see them right there on the tables between the bottles and the guns. (Makeba 1988, p. 49)

Since then, as vulvo-vaginitis in young girls began to manifest itself both epidemic and endemic, special attention has been paid to this disease. The first was Pott (1883), who pointed out that this disease is based on infection with tripe poison, vaccinated by mothers or close relatives; later and other authors: Widmark, Csri, Frnkel, and in recent times Prochownik, Pott, Dusch and Spaeth found diplococcus in the genital area of such girls, very similar to Neisser's gonococcus.

Abstract:

Syftet med denna uppsats är att beskriva genusordningen i Martin Widmarks böcker om Lasse-Majas detektivbyrå samt undersöka hur detta, på en teoretisk nivå, kan påverka barns uppfattning av genus. Utgångspunkten i textanalysen har varit Kritisk ideologianalys som syftar till att först beskriva och förklara texterna för att sedan sätta dem i relation till dess mottagare. Jag har använt mig av genusteorier som beskriver hur genusordningen är uppbyggd samt hur genus konstrueras och rekonstrueras. Dessa teorier har sedan kopplats till de böcker som jag har undersökt. Jag har också använt mig av forskning som beskriver barnlitteraturen och hur den kan påverka läsarens bild av genus och genusordningen.

Min studie visade att karaktärerna i böckerna skildras på ett relativt könsstereotypt sätt, främst de vuxna karaktärerna. Även huvudkaraktärerna Lasse och Maja skildras på detta sätt visade det sig vid en närmare granskning. Det finns karaktärer i böckerna som bryter mot den rådande genusordningen, även om de är få. Böckerna skildrar med andra ord den genusordning som finns i vårt samhälle och kan bekräfta den bild av genus som en läsare har. Min slutsats är därför att det är viktigt att barn får lära sig att tänka kriktiskt och reflektera över genus och genusordningen för att på så sätt bli medveten om hur genus konstrueras och rekonstrueras.

Uppsatsen analyserar två barndeckare. Den första boken som analyseras, Astrid Lindgrens Mästerdetektiven Blomkvist (2002; originalutgåva 1946) var en av de första svenska böckerna inom genren barndeckare. Den andra boken som analyseras är Martin Widmarks Diamantmysteriet (2002) som är den första delen i en idag mycket populär barndeckarserie. Syftet med uppsatsen är att se vilka likheter och skillnader samt intertextuella relationer som finns mellan verken. Analysen görs först utifrån en narrativ studie av de båda verken. Därefter görs en komparativ analys mellan verken. Analysen lyfter några likheter, olikheter och intertextuella relationer som finns mellan verken, samt hur man som lärare kan använda de litterära verken i sin undervisning.

Abstract:
In this essay seven children’s books aimed at the age group 6-9 years are read using a matrix to determine if the characters, from a viewpoint considering current gender norms and power, are normative, norm-breaking or falsely norm-breaking. The latter means that they have been attributed transgressive characteristics without there being any shift in power balance from the masculine to the feminine. Results show that the authors have tried to break gender norms, for example with regards to the child -characters’ clothes, which are consistently very alike regardless of gender. These efforts remain shallow as the power still rests with the boys, whose awareness of their own position within the gender -power system give them a sense of intrinsic power (power-to). The female characters reflect societal gender norms by being self-effacing, compliant and reactive, for example by praising the boys, providing them with room to be competent as well as both silencing themselves and letting themselves be silenced. The boy -characters show falsely norm-breaking behaviour in some areas, for example by having atypically broad emotional spectra, yet the boys’ superiority is retained and is reflected in their behaviour towards the female characters.
I denna uppsats granskas sju stycken barnböcker för åldersgruppen 6–9 år utifrån en matris för att bestämma ifall karaktärerna, med utgångspunkt i rådande genusnormer och i förhållande till makt, är normativa, normbrytande eller falskt normbrytande. Det senare innebär att de tillskrivs transgressiva egenskaper, utan att någon maktförskjutning från det maskulina till det feminina sker.Resultatet visar på försök från författarnas sida att bryta genusnormer, t.ex. vad gäller barnkaraktärernas kläder som genomgående är mycket lika oavsett genustillhörighet. Dessa försök blir dock ytliga då makten i de flesta fall fortfarande vilar hos pojkarna, vilkas medvetenhet om sin position i könsmaktssystemet ger dem en inneboende känsla av makt (power-to). De kvinnliga karaktärerna reflekterar samhällets normer genom att vara omvärldsorienterade, fogliga och reaktiva, t.ex. genom att berömma pojkkaraktärerna, ge dem utrymme att vara kompetenta samt att både tysta sig själva och låta sig tystas. Pojkkaraktärerna visar på vissa områden exempel på falskt normbrytande beteende, t.ex. genom att ha atypiskt breda känslospektra, medan pojkarnas överordning kvarstår och reflekteras i deras beteende gentemot flickkaraktärerna.

Barnböcker anklagas ibland för att reproducera genusstereotyper. Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka på vilket sätt genus framställs i modern svensk barnlitteratur genom en analys av Martin Widmarks populära barnboksserie LasseMajas detektivbyrå. Analysverktyget utgörs av den systemisk-funktionella grammatikens transitivitetsanalys och appliceras på en titel i barnboksserien. Resultatet av analysen uppvisar att framställningen av bokens huvudpersoner Lasse och Maja i huvudsak bryter mot gängse genusstereotyper, medan framställningen av bipersonerna reproducerar dem. Slutsatsen är att författaren tillgriper ett alternativt framställningssätt av huvudpersonerna eftersom det idag ofta förutsätts att unga läsares förebilder inte bör reproducera genusstereotyper. Han tillgriper däremot ett traditionellt framställningssätt av bipersonerna dels för att uppnå en komisk effekt genom att anspela på stereotyper, dels för att belysa samhälleliga problem relaterade till kroppsideal och mobbning.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to clinically compare the use of a 810 nm diode laser (DL) following modified Widman flap (test sites) to that of modified Widman flap (MWF) alone (control sites). Thirteen patients with periodontal pockets in two different quadrants with at least one tooth exhibiting a pocket depth of >7 millimeters and attachment levels of >7mm were selected. One side was randomly selected to receive MWF and the other to receive a diode laser following MWF. The DL was used to de-epithelialize the inner part of the periodontal flap and photo-biostimulate the surgical area. Probing depth (PD), clinical attachment levels (CAL), plaque index (PI), and gingival index (GI) were evaluated at baseline, 6 weeks and 5 months. Pain scale assessment (PS), pain medication consumption (PM), tissue edema (TE), and tissue color (TC) were evaluated one week following surgery. Treatment differences were analyzed using McNemar’s test, paired t-tests or a Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. No statistical differences of CAL gain, PD, GI and PI reduction between laser sites and control sites were seen. Statistically significant differences were seen for TE (p=0.041), PM (p<0.001) and PS (p<0.001) favoring test sites. TC did not show a statistically significant difference (p=0.9766). Patients rated the first surgical treatment performed as more painful than the second (p<0.002). The use of a 810 nm diode laser following modified Widman flap provided additional benefits in terms of less edema and post operative pain.
