In later life, the death of a family member occurs most often after a challenging time of family caring. It denotes a dramatic event in families’ lives, and involves intense feelings for all. To date, bereavement has mainly been investigated as an intrapersonal process from the perspective of family carers or widow/ers. Little is known about families’ experience when an adult member has died. This thesis reports an original research investigation of gendered differences in the meanings of widowhood to older men and women in the medium and long term after the loss of their spouse. Twenty five widows and twenty six widowers were interviewed in-depth, with a semi-structured interview guide and the data were analysed using a qualitative data analysis software program. There is a received wisdom that in widowhood, women grieve and men replace. Indeed, demographic data indicate that older widowed men are more likely to remarry than older widowed women. No one has examined the extent to which widowed persons are able to manage resources so they can continue performing personal and household functions. The potential of Bourdieu's work for feminist theory is identified, particularly in his explanation of the mechanism of gender relations, however, the analysis also demonstrates that the phallocentric presuppositions embedded within Bourdi

Another suggests that when studying social support it is important to make distinctions between positive and negative interactions. A third approach focuses on specificity issues,
