Neural activity induces the remodeling of pre- and postsynaptic membranes, which maintain their apposition through cell adhesion molecules. Among them, N-cadherin is redistributed, undergoes activity-dependent conformational changes, and is required for synaptic plasticity. Here, we show that depolarization induces the enlargement of the width of spine head, and that cadherin activity is essential for this synaptic rearrangement. Dendritic spines visualized with green fluorescent protein in hippocampal neurons showed an expansion by the activation of AMPA receptor, so that the synaptic apposit

CCD observations of the MnI 539.47 nm spectral line in the solar flux made at the Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade between 1994 and 2003 have been reduced and certain line parameters, viz. the equivalent width, full width at half maximum and central depth have been derived. The variation of these parameters with the solar activity has been evaluated. The relative variation of the equivalent width from minimum to maximum of solar activity was found to be 1.4%, while the variation of the central depth is 2.3%. The full width at half maximum remains practically constant.

The Ph.D. project compiled in this thesis has focused on the role of the solvent in solid-liquid phase equilibria and in nucleation kinetics. Six organic substances have been selected as model compounds, viz. ortho-, meta- and para-hydroxybenzoic acid, salicylamide, meta- and para-aminobenzoic acid. The different types of crystal phases of these compounds have been explored, and their respective solid-state properties have been determined experimentally. The solubility of these crystal phases has been determined in various solvents between 10 and 50 oC. The kinetics of nucleation has been inve

Findings suggest that physical activity is useful for decreasing symptoms of some disorders, improving mood, and improving cognitive functioning. Further, mental health professionals generally endorse the topic of physical activity as relevant and useful in the mental health context. However, mental health professionals do not generally address client physical activity. Among other concerns,

Vaneless diffuser rotating stall is a serious problem for centrifugal compressors, since it limits their working range. In the literature some good correlations can be found for predicting stall inception but they have limited coverage of last stage configuration case, especially for very low blade-outlet-width-to-impeller-radius-ratio impellers typically used in high-pressure applications. In addition, stall inception is strictly bounded to diffuser geometry (for example, diffuser width and diffusion ratio). Abstract For a gear pair, both the contact pattern and the transmission error (TE) significantly impact durability and fatigue life. Design and manufacturing processes are often aimed at improving the contact pattern and reducing the overall TE. Other errors, such as runout and wobble, are often induced during the installation of power transmission systems, and they can alter the contact pattern and TE of an otherwise well-designed gear pair. This study provides a methodology to experimentally investigate the impact of wobble errors on the contact pattern and static transmission error (STE) of
