Abstract:
Abstract In the last few years, collaborating with representatives of indigenous communities became an important topic for European ethnographic museums. The Weltmuseum Wien (former Museum of Ethnology Vienna, Austria) adheres to this form of sharing cultural heritage. Its Brazilian collection offers rich opportunities to back up Amazonian cultures in their struggle for cultural survival. However, to establish collaborative work in a European museum on a sustained basis is still a difficult endeavor. The article will discuss the projects which have been realized during the past five years with several groups from Amazonia, such as the Warí, Kanoé, Makushí, Shipibo and Sateré-Mawé. Projects were carried out in Austria, Brazil, and Guyana and ranged from short visit to longer periods of co-curating an exhibition. As for the Museum, results are documented in the collection, in two exhibitions and in the accompanying catalogues. It is less clear what the indigenous communities might take away from such collaborations. It will be argued that museum collaborations can help establish a new contact zone, ‘indoors’ and ‘outdoors’, in which members of heritage communities are able to break through the silence in the old contact zone and finally make their own voices heard.

Abstract:
The Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien is one of the largest fine arts collections worldwide, comprising the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Austrian Theater Museum, the Museum of Ethnology, all placed in Vienna, and Schlo&szlig; Ambras in Tirol. We present results from up to 10 years of insect pest monitoring in different collections and the implementation of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) concept. The Kunsthistorisches Museum was the first museum in Vienna to introduce such a concept. We also present specific insect pest problems such as a biscuit beetle (<em>Stegobium paniceum</em>) infestation of paintings lined with starch paste backings (linings) or the webbing clothes moth (<em>Tineola bisselliella</em>) infestation at the Museum of Carriages, both repeatedly occurring problems in the museum. With the help of the insect pest monitoring programs, these and other problems were found and the infested objects treated, usually with anoxia (nitrogen).

Abstract:
The appropriate restoration of architectural heritage needs a careful and comprehensive documentation of the existing structures, which even elaborates, if the function of the building needs special attention, like in museums.<br><br> In a collaborative project between the Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia and two universities in Austria (TU Wien and the Danube University Krems) a restoration and adaptation concept of the Affandi Museum in Yogyakarta is currently in progress. It provides a perfect case study for the development of a workflow to combine data from a building survey, architectural research, indoor climate measurements and the documentation of artwork in a challenging environment, from hot and humid tropical climate to continuous threads by natural hazards like earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. The Affandi Museum houses the collection of Affandi, who is considered to be Indonesia's foremost Expressionist painter and partly designed and constructed the museum by himself. With the spirit of the artist still perceptible in the complex the Affandi Museum is an important part of the Indonesian cultural heritage. Thus its preservation takes special attention and adds to the complexity of the development of a monitoring and maintenance concept.<br><br> This paper describes the ongoing development of an approach to a workflow from the measurement and research of the objects, both architectural and artwork, to the semantically enriched BIM Model as the base for a sustainable monitoring tool for the Affandi Museum.

Abstract:
In autumn 2020 the open-air construction fence exhibition Face It! of Vienna’s city museum (Wien Museum) was repeatedly damaged and marked with graffiti during demonstrations against measures taken by the government to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Ultimately, the museum decided to re-curate the initial exhibition and exhibited the protesters’ graffiti markings instead. Approaching these events through situational analysis, I interrogate their political and politicizing dimension in reference to Chantal Mouffe’s idea of ‘agonistic pluralism’ and a radical democratic conceptualization of museum practice. By delineating their agonizing effect, I argue for a conflict-attuned notion of graffiti-based cultural practices in order to foster their democratic potential. In the end, I assess the museum’s decision to re-curate and ask if it contributes to a democratization of its practice and furthermore which role (re-politicized) museum education did and could play in this context.

Abstract:
Abstract In this study we will outline the history of paper conservation at the Wien Museum, emphasizing particularly on bleaching methods which were carried out during the period of 1978–1987. Our research is primarily based on conservation protocols kept at the museum during the period studied. Furthermore, theme-centred expert interviews were conducted with conservators who had worked for the collection. A literature review of common bleaching methods in paper conservation helped putting our observations into the larger context of scientific discourse at the time. During the period under study the main bleaching agents were hydrogen peroxide combined with diethyl ether and chloramine T. There were uncertainties regarding pre- and post-treatment options such as washing, deacidification and “anti-chlorine baths”. In general, treatment protocols and interviews reflect the state of published research of that time.

Abstract:
Abstract Seven historical bat specimens of four species (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, R. mehelyi, Taphozous nudiventris, Myotis myotis), attributed to originate from the territory of the present-day Lebanon, are deposited and documented in the modern database of the mammal collection of the Natural History Museum, Vienna, Austria (Naturhistorisches Museum Wien). Two of these species (R. mehelyi, T. nudiventris) have never been reported for Lebanon in the existing literature and recent surveys have also failed to find them in this country. Since these bats were collected in the period 1824–1885, the history of the all respective specimens was evaluated in detail. The revision brought rather unexpected results. Only one specimen (R. ferrumequinum) was found to come (most probably) from Lebanon, being collected by W. Hemprich and Ch. Ehrenberg in 1824. In the remaining six specimens, the origin could not be defined, thus rendering the statement that they were collected in Lebanon insecure. This case demonstrates that careful checks of modern interpretations of historical records are necessary when examining past distributions of organisms.

Abstract:
The Vietnamese fauna of the genus Scolopocryptops Newport, 1844 was reviewed based on recently collected specimens and material from Zoological Museum of the Moscow Lomonosov State University (ZMMU) and Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NHMW). As a result of study of 164 specimens from 13 sampling regions, four species have been recognized, of which S. rubiginosus C.L. Koch, 1878 and S. spinicaudus Wood, 1862 already reported from Vietnam, S. hoanglieni described as n. sp., and S. capillipedatus (Takakuwa, 1938) for the first time recorded for this country. S. broelemanni esulcata Attems, 1938 was redescribed and confirmed as a valid. The COI fragments were obtained for the above mentioned species and the K2P genetic divergence between Vietnamese Scolopocryptops species was preliminarily estimated. New data on intraspecific variations of spiracle number in Scolopocryptops, an identification key for East Asian species and the general list of species of Scolopocryptops are provided.

Abstract:
During the course of an extensive survey of Coleoptera from tropical southern Florida, a specimen of the exclusively Neotropical genus Dryocoetoides was found in flight intercept traps (Atkinson and Peck, 1994; Peck, 1989). Over the intervening years I have had the opportunity to compare the specimen with material in the U.S. National Museum and in the S. L. Wood collection (recently transferred to the USNM). Wood's ( 2007) recent monograph of the South American species of Scolytinae included a key to all the known species of the genus, not only those known from South America. Based on that key and included descriptions I was able narrow down the possibilities and to borrow selected Schedl types from the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien. As a result, I have reached the conclusion that this specimen represents an undescribed species. It is described here to make the name available for a regional monograph of the bark and ambrosia beetles of the southeastern U.S. (Atkinson, in prep.).

Abstract:
As insect decline threatens the fauna of Central Europe, “dark taxa” present an obstacle to understanding biodiversity loss. The superfamily Platygastroidea is a dark taxon, with many superficial descriptions requiring examination of type material to characterize and revise species and genera. The Natural History Museum Vienna (Naturhistorisches Museum Wien) is arguably the most important historical collection of Platygastroidea in Central Europe. Type specimens from 85 species in 21 genera and three families are here catalogued and photographically illustrated, including previously undocumented types described by Förster, Kieffer, Nees von Esenbeck, and Ratzeburg. Lectotypes are designated for Anteris bicolor Kieffer, Anteris simulans Kieffer, Hadronotus laticeps Kieffer, Leptacis foersteri Kieffer, Plastogryon investis Kieffer, Plastogryon sagax Kieffer, Prophanurus mayri Kieffer, and Telenomus laeviceps Förster. Trissolcus schimitsheki (Szelényi) syn. nov. is treated as a junior synonym of Trissolcus scutellaris (Thomson) and Telenomus nomas Förster syn. nov. is treated as a junior synonym of Trissolcus semistriatus (Nees). Baeus maculatus (Förster) comb. nov. is transferred from Telenomus. Historical, taxonomic, and curatorial remarks are included, providing an essential foundation for revisionary work on the Platygastroidea of Central Europe and beyond.

Abstract:
In 1908, a hoard of Roman denarii was found near the village of Kasperivtsi (Chortkivs'kyy Region). From the very beginning, there have been a number of misunderstandings and inaccuracies around it, which persist to this day. One of the persons who published information about the find was Karol Wilhelm Halama aka Hallama (1871–1948), a postal clerk from Żywiec, a small town in western Lesser Poland. Halama collected antique coins, which he donated to the National Museum in Krakow in 1946. As a member of the Numismatic Society in Vienna, he published short texts in the journals issued by the society: Monatsblatt der Numismatischen Gesellschaft in Wien and Mitteilungen der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Münz- und Medaillenkunde. In one of the notes, he corrected the incorrect information about the Kasperivtsi find. However, his contribution to research on this hoard was forgotten. The hoard itself was scattered and today only seven coins out of its entirety are availlable, stored in the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Łódź. This article attempts to organize information about the composition of the hoard and the fate of the coins included in it.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We re-examined the putative type specimen of Society Kingfisher Todiramphus veneratus (J. F. Gmelin, 1788) in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NMW 50.633) and conclude based on plumage that it represents the taxon from Moorea, T. veneratus youngi Sharpe, 1892, rather than nominate T. veneratus veneratus from Tahiti. X-rays reveal that it was prepared using techniques common in the late 18th century, and that its preparation style matches that of other specimens collected during Cook’s three voyages. NMW 50.633 has been assumed to be the one, or one of a number of, specimen(s) used by Latham to describe and illustrate his ‘Venerated Kingfisher’ (present-day Society Kingfisher), which was the basis of the later valid introduction of the name Alcedo venerata by J. F. Gmelin. However, whereas the description and an unpublished illustration in Latham’s archives agree closely with veneratus from Tahiti, NMW 50.633 appears to represent Moorea youngi. While this finding does not compromise the definition of Society Kingfisher veneratus, it leaves it without a safely identified type specimen. We also examined a Moorea specimen in the National Museums Liverpool (LIVCM D2366) that is almost as old as NMW 50.633, but which X-rays suggest had a different origin than NMW 50.633.

Abstract:
Epilobium trichophyllum Hausskn., is a rare and endemic plant known only from its type collection [Sikkim (10-12000 ft.), Latung (Lachung), 13.vii.1849, J.D. Hooker & Thomson 7 (K- Royal Botanic Garden, Kew; W - Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, Vienna)]. An unidentified specimen at BSHC [Pradhan & Giri 29191A (BSHC!)] with characteristic villous hairs throughout the plant could be determined as Epilobium trichophyllum Hausskn. This specimen was collected in 2006 (after a gap of 157 years) from Zema-1 on the way from Lachen to Thangu with similar phyto-climatic condition as that of the type locality. A brief description, taxonomic history and photograph of the specimens have been provided to confirm its identity. Its threat status has been assessed as ‘Critically Endangered’ as per IUCN Red List criteria.

Abstract:
Rudolf Sturany, the curator of molluscs of the Natural History Museum of Vienna between the late 19th and early 20th century described 21 species of bivalves from the Red Sea collected by the pioneering expeditions of the vessel “Pola” which took place between 1895 and 1898. We here list and illustrate the type material of these species, provide the original descriptions, a translation into English, and curatorial and taxonomic comments. All species are illustrated in colour and with SEM imaging. To stabilize the nomenclature, we designate lectotypes for Gastrochaena weinkauffi, Cuspidaria brachyrhynchus, and C. dissociata, whose type series contained specimens belonging to other species. This paper concludes the series on the type specimens of marine molluscs described by Sturany from the “Pola” expeditions.

Abstract:
Xyleborini currently consists of more than 1168 species in 36 genera, nearly all of which were described in Xyleborus (Hulcr et al. 2015; Smith 2017). The tribe has been the focus of considerable taxonomic attention over the last decade resulting in phylogenetically based revisions and the erection of new genera (e.g. Hulcr et al. 2007, Hulcr and Cognato 2010). However in the Old World these efforts have largely been restricted to faunas of particular countries such as Taiwan (Beaver and Liu 2010), Thailand (Beaver et al. 2014), and Papua New Guinea (Hulcr and Cognato 2008). The region’s fauna was primarily described from the 1890s to the 1940s by three authors, W.F.H. Blandford, Hans Eggers and Karl Schedl. During the 1920s to the 1940s Eggers described numerous Xyleborus species from India and Myanmar (Burma), typically from single specimens or a small series, and deposited them in the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. Cotypes (paratypes), if present for the species, were kept in his collection. Upon his death, his collection was sent to the United States National Museum of Natural History but Schedl retained many of the types that are now at the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NHMW). In all, FRI houses 50 xyleborine holotypes, and most of these species are solely known from the holotype.

Abstract:
Bubalopa Stål, 1869 (Darninae: Hyphinoini) is an obscure genus of treehoppers endemic to the Northern Andes. In this work, we reassess the taxonomic boundaries of Bubalopa based on primary types and comparative material. Newly reported characters from adults and nymphs expand the current concept of Hyphinoini, for which an amended diagnosis is presented. Identification keys, species redescriptions, illustrations, and distribution maps are provided for the three species that now constitute Bubalopa: B. furcata (Fairmaire, 1846), B. obscuricornis Stål, 1869 and B. iguaque sp. nov. (Cordillera Oriental, Colombia). Immatures of Hyphinoe obliqua (Walker, 1858) and B. furcata are described for the first time with notes on their life history. A nomenclatural change is proposed for Hyphinoe punctorum Buckton, 1903, previously included in Bubalopa, now considered to be a junior synonym of Eualthe punctum (Fairmaire, 1846). A lectotype is designated for Hemiptycha furcata Fairmaire, 1846, currently housed at the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien.

Abstract:
Lithobius (Lithobius) iranicus Attems, 1951, is recorded for the first time since its original description and is rediagnosed and redescribed based on recent and type material deposited at the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NHMW). The revision of the species includes genetic information from three loci and modern illustrations of its key morphological characters. Restudy of the syntypes of two nominal species collected in the same expedition, Lithobius inaequidens Attems, 1951, and L. rhiknus Attems, 1951, reveals no reliable distinguishing characters from L. iranicus, with which they are placed in junior subjective synonymy. Lithobius inquiriendus Attems, 1951 is based on immature specimens from southern Iran that likely include two species, neither of which can be confidently identified as conspecific with L. iranicus. Incorporating L. iranicus in a molecular phylogeny for Lithobiidae recovers it as an isolated lineage allied to a clade of mostly Palaearctic species of Lithobius (Lithobius).
