Abstract:
Odysseus establishes several alliances to fight Penelope’s suitors in order to reassume his place at Ithaca. These alliances are marked by work. Humble workers (like Eumaeus, Philoetius, Eurycleia) stand side by side the hero’s wife, Penelope, the weaver. All this activity contrasts with the suitors’ idleness, constantly consuming the products of other people’s work. One of the last recognition scenes of the poem, in which the hero is recognized by his father, Laertes (Od., XXIV 205-360), reaffirms work’s special place at Odysseus’ relationships and strategies. In 1913 in Russia, at the insistence of the ministers of the Russian Orthodox Church, it was decided to celebrate the All-Russian Day of Sobriety for the first time, and this was done in St. Petersburg with the participation of a group of public people. This date coincided with the day of strict fasting, when the Orthodox world celebrates a great church holiday — the Beheading of St. John the Baptist: according to the new calendar, this day falls on September 11th. Legend has it that being in a drunken stupor, Herod Antipas cut off the head of the holy Prophet during a feast. In all the Orthod

Abstract In Pierre Corneille’s religious tragedy, Polyeucte (1643), the secondary character of Sévère, invented by the dramatist as a former love interest of the protagonist’s wife, has long been held (by contemporary critics and to the present day) to be a positive, noble and virtuous pagan who steals the limelight from the martyr hero. This article offers a radical re-reading of the play, arguing that the depiction of Sévère is more complex and that his probity is questionable throughout the play. At the same time, his mysterious non-conversion at the end of the drama affords him the chance

Abstract:
American writer John Cheever’s “Swimmer” adopts a surreal or symbolic style that breaks away from the previous ideas and approaches of realism. The story’s hero Neddy Merrill embarks on an adventurous journey to swim home: an eight-mile journey that connects suburban swimming pools in his mind’s eye to form the magnificent Lucinda River, named for his wife. This paper examines the ever-changing natural scenes to explore the role of such scenes in portraying the characters and revealing the theme of the story. It also discusses the changing fates of the hero in two aspects-people’s changing att

Herod, Jews, and His Opponents. The reputation of the Jewish King Herod is closely linked to the legend of the massacre of the infants of Bethlehem from the Gospel of Matthew and to the hatred that Josephus Flavius says his own Jewish subjects had for him. In contrast to this tradition, this article, following contemporary Herodian scholarship, demonstrates that Herod was a good king to his subjects, who helped the Jews both within his kingdom and throughout the Roman Empire, and did much to make them visible and to protect them. It also argues that some of the negative texts about Herod, both
