Abstract Coherent, wide-tunable frequency and high intensity terahertz (THz) source is under preparation at the Shanghai Soft X-ray free-electron laser facility (SXFEL). The electron bunches modulated by frequency beating light can generate coherent, wide-tunable, high intensity THz radiation from 0.1 to 30 THz through wigglers. The electromagnetic wiggler with peak magnetic field up to 1.75 T is adopted and the parameters of the wiggler are optimized to ensure the generation of strong field THz radiation. Due to the limitation of layout space of the SXFEL, the length of wiggler is limited wit

A wiggler is a high-power insertion device that was used in the past to produce a smooth wide-band X-ray spectrum. It is widely believed that on low-emittance synchrotrons this X-ray source loses its spatial and spectral homogeneity and therefore becomes less ideal than a scanning undulator. In this paper, we report on experimental and computational studies of an in-vacuum wiggler installed on the first fourth-generation synchrotron MAX IV. We investigate how several physical parameters affect the wiggler spectrum and propose a combination of a few of them that results in significant spectral

This article reviews insertion devices (IDs) — wigglers and undulators — both for synchrotron radiation production and for machine parameter control. As there are many types of wigglers and undulators and it is impossible to describe them all in detail, here we particularly emphasize the design, characteristics and tolerances of undulators for free electron lasers and damping wigglers for controlling beam damping parameters. The influence of periodic IDs on beam parameters in cyclic accelerators is described in brief. A profound description of different ID types can be found in [1].

Abstract We present the magnetic field simulation and design of a high-field permanent magnet-based in-vacuum multipole wiggler for the Siam Photon Source (SPS). SPS utilizes a 1.2-GeV electron storage ring with a double-bend achromat (DBA) lattice, featuring four long straight sections capable of accommodating insertion devices up to 5 m in length. To generate tender and hard X-ray radiation in this low-energy storage ring, an in-vacuum permanent magnet multipole wiggler is designed as a cost-effective alternative to superconducting wigglers, which are expensive to operate and maintain. Employing laser wigglers and accelerators provides the potential to dramatically cut the size and cost of X-ray light sources. Owing to recent technological developments in the production of high-brilliance electron beams and high-power laser pulses, it is now conceivable to make steps toward the practical realisation of laser-pumped X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs). In this regard, here the head-on collision of a relativistic dense electron beam with a linearly polarized laser pulse as a wiggler is studied, in which the laser wiggler can be realised using a conventional quantum laser. The insensitivity of the phase of the laser field to any disturbance in the laser cavity parameter derives from the fact that stimulated and spontaneous emissions take place concurrently at the same wave vector, the phases of spontaneous emission are mildly bunched, and the central limit theorem can be applied to the phase of the laser field. Emission is produced by a reconnection-generated beam of particles via a variant of the free electron laser mechanism, operating in a weakly turbulent, guide field-dominated plasma. We first consider nonlinear Thomson scattering in a guide field-dominated regime, and apply it to explain emission bands observed in Crab pulsar and in FRBs.
