Abstract:
Today, humans have the phase of the social organization evolution, in which information, communication technologies, and knowledge are fundamental objects of production, as well as the digital environment is an important space for the development of society. There are problems of people’s digital literacy actualized by the increasing role of the existing and growing in information and knowledge in society from Internet environment. This study illustrates the issue of getting digital literacy using online encyclopedic resources on the case about informing the pandemic of coronavirus disease COVID-19 worldwide in 2019-2020. Based on analysis of the mentioned virological topic articles of the national encyclopedias of Europe (Britannica, Brockhaus, Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine, Great Norwegian Encyclopedia, Wikipedia, etc.) the conclusion is made that encyclopedic knowledge is inert and during the pandemic, it has a low practical role for the needs of humans in the context of safe behavior and right decisions. However, Wikipedia differs from other national online encyclopedias by offering much more information including that is not commonly found in classical encyclopedias, but is useful to readers.

Abstract:
Wikipedia is the largest web-based digital encyclopedia today that contains almost all knowledge in general. On Wikipedia many readers have difficulty finding accurate information about the topic they are looking for, as content on Wikipedia usually contains only an overview of the topic referenced from some existing references. This study aims to examine Wikipedia, other encyclopedias and other online media that contain specific topics with their target users. The study was conducted on literature related to Wikipedia, encyclopedias, education and children's interests, especially at the elementary school level. Literature search is done by including some of the main keywords in Google Scholar such as "Wikipedia", "encyclopedia", "elementary school curriculum", "educational content" and "learning media". Literature is also obtained through the official website of the Ministry of Education and Culture which contains elementary and junior high school education standards, educational assessment standards, and literacy and numeration learning modules at elementary level. The results of literature analysis include 4 classifications based on topics, namely evaluation of usage, content, online learning and media. Based on the results of the analysis found that there has not been much research on the digital encyclopedia for education.

Abstract:
The analysis of online encyclopedias in the Ukrainian information space is done in this paper. It is investigated that online encyclopedias are divided into two large groups: digital analogues of printed editions, for example the online Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine, and independent encyclopedic web projects, among which the most popular is Wikipedia (one of the most visited sites in the Ukrainian information space). Despite the fact that electronic encyclopedias have a number of advantages, to refuse to print classical editions there are no grounds. For the development of the Ukrainian information space, it is important that any encyclopedia project aimed at making a printed product is also presented in an electronic version.

Abstract:
Background The internet has changed the way of people acquiring health information. Previous studies have shown that Wikipedia is a reasonably reliable medical resource, and it has been ranked higher than other general websites in various search engines. Baidu Encyclopedia is one of the most popular encyclopedia websites in China. However, no studies have shown the quality of the content provided in the Baidu Encyclopedia. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the quality of liver disease information provided by Wikipedia (in English) and Baidu Encyclopedia (in Chinese) and to perform a comparison of the quality and timeliness of the articles published in these two encyclopedias. Moreover, a 3-year follow-up study was conducted to compare if the information in both these websites was updated regularly over this period. Methods We searched for information on liver diseases by using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision Version 2016 codes on Wikipedia (in English) and Baidu Encyclopedia (in Chinese). The quality of the articles was assessed using the DISCERN instrument, which consists of 3 sections. We recorded the latest editing date of the webpages and calculated the date interval to evaluate the update timeliness of these websites. Results We found 22 entries on liver diseases in Baidu Encyclopedia and 15 articles in Wikipedia between September 15, 2016, and September 30, 2016, and we found 25 entries in Baidu Encyclopedia and 16 articles in Wikipedia between September 15, 2019, and September 30, 2019. In section 1 of the DISCERN instrument, the mean (SE) scores of Baidu Encyclopedia entries were significantly lower than those of Wikipedia articles. In section 2 and section 3 of the DISCERN instrument, the DISCERN scores of Baidu Encyclopedia entries were lower than those of Wikipedia articles, but the differences were not statistically significant. The total DISCERN scores of Baidu Encyclopedia entries were significantly lower than those of Wikipedia articles. The update interval of the entries in Baidu Encyclopedia was found to be significantly longer than that of the articles in Wikipedia. Conclusions This study shows that the quality of articles and the reliability of the research content on liver diseases in Wikipedia are better than those of the entries in Baidu Encyclopedia. However, the quality of the treatment choices provided in both Wikipedia and Baidu Encyclopedia is not satisfactory. Wikipedia is updated more frequently than Baidu Encyclopedia, thereby ensuring that the information presented has the most recent research findings. The findings of our study suggest that in order to find accurate health information, it is important to seek the help of medical professionals instead of looking for a prescription amid the confusing information provided on the internet.

Melnyk, Iurii. "The worldview of the Ukrainian state in the Yevhen Onatsky’s opinion journalism (based on the Ukrainian small encyclopedia)." Proceedings of Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv, no. 11(27) (2019): 127–41. http://dx.doi.org/10.37222/2524-0315-2019-11(27)-7.

Abstract:
Taking into consideration the Ukrainian Small Encyclopedia, the article recreates the worldview for the Ukrainian state in the interpretation of the encyclopedia’s author Yevhen Onatsky. The USE is a large-scale encyclopedic text by Yevhen Onatsky, which has no analogues. In this text the author concentrated his scientific and journalistic achievements over his life. A comparison of the USE with other encyclopedias gives the right to say that subjectivity in judgments is characteristic not of Onatsky’s work only, but of many other encyclopedias, in particular of the «Encyclopedia, or a Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts, and Crafts» by Diderot and d’Alembert, of Wikipedia and in general of any encyclopedia that claims to explain processes and phenomena. Owing to its subjective component, the USE is valuable not only as an encyclopedic work, but also as a journalistic one. From this point of view, the most noteworthy are encyclopedic articles of a worldview nature that are of immediate practical importance both in times of statelessness and at the stage of the Ukrainian state-building. In his encyclopedia, Onatsky sharply condemns Marxism as an ideology, the USSR as an attempt to imitate its implementation in practice, Moscow imperialism as the essence of the Bolshevik state. The other author’s warnings, although less accentuated, are evoked by the vices of the free world: soulless egocentrism, hedonism, consumerism, as well as parliamentarism, capitalism and colonialism, if they are built on fraud and exploitation of man by man. Onatsky contrasts the named social phenomena with an ethos of struggle, supported by an unshakable hope of ultimate success; spiritual nationalism, the meaning of which is solidarity between members of society and service to higher ideals; thinking in the interests of the community (nation), and not in the interests of individuals, political parties or classes. Keywords: Ukrainian small encyclopedia, Yevhen Onatsky, journalism, worldview, Ukrainian state.

Abstract:
How knowledge is negotiated between the makers of encyclopedias and their audiences remains an ongoing question in research on encyclopedias. A comparative content analysis of the published answers of letters to the editor of the German Meyers Konversationslexikon (Korrespondenzblatt) from 1885 and the discussion pages of the article potato of the German Wikipedia (2013) reveals continuities as well as changes in the communication between encyclopedia producers and their audiences. The main reasons why readers and editors communicate are the need for updated factual information, an exchange on editorial principles and the intellectual exchange of ideas on ideological and philosophical questions in relation to the encyclopedic content. Editors and readers attach a lot of importance to the process of verifying information through bibliographical references. Whereas, for the editors of Meyers Konversationslexikon the leading role of experts remains undisputed, Wikipedians work in a contradictory situation. They are on the one hand exposing knowledge production to a permanent process of negotiation, thereby challenging the role of experts, on the other hand relying strongly on bibliographical authorities. Whilst the reasons for the communication between readers and editors of Meyers Konversationslexikon and among Wikipedia contributors coincide, the understanding of the roles of readers and editors differ. The editors of the Korrespondenzblatt keep up a lecturing attitude. As opposed to this, administrators in Wikipedia want to encourage participation and strive to develop expertise among the participating contributors. Albeit power relations between administrators, regular authors, occasional authors and readers continue to exist they are comparatively flat and transient. Regardless of these differences, the comparison between Meyers Konversationslexikon and Wikipedia indicates that the sine qua non for activating an upwards spiral of quality improvement is that readers accept, learn and cultivate common rules – including how to deal with dissent – and identify with the product at least so far as that they report mistakes.

Abstract:
The launch and rapid domination of Wikipedia as a reference tool for the Internet was as dramatic as it was unexpected. Wikipedia broke so many of the rules of reference publishing, which, even if not formally codified, had been widely accepted for many years: the use of (usually named) authorities as expert contributors, and the presence of moderating editors to ensure balanced structure. All this appeared to have been swept away with Wikipedia, and, not least because Wikipedia content is given away rather than sold, the competition between Wikipedia and most general-purpose encyclopedias was a sad and rather one-sided affair. One by one the existing commercial print general encyclopedias admitted defeat; among the latest is Brockhaus, the leading German encyclopedia brand, which ended publication early in 2013.

The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History, first published in 1987 and then placed online in 1998, is recognized as the progenitor of the modern, urban encyclopedia and a model of shared academic and vernacular authority. Today Wikipedia challenges it and similar scholarly products with its reliance on universal authority, its huge scope of entries, and its ability to keep current. This article suggests that vetted urban encyclopedias need to revisit their roots as community enterprises and reimagine and reengage those connections in order to allow their vetted content to remain competitive with Wikipedia and other open-source online resources.

Wikipedia's precursor started in the year 2000 as a traditional online encyclopedia with content controlled by a small group of experts. In 2013 Wikipedia's current user-controlled incarnation was such a successful enterprise that an asteroid was named after it. The authors briefly discuss key opportunities and challenges in e-collaboration research on Wikipedia. The opportunities refer to studies on the impact of Wikipedia on individuals and organizations, as well as on the spontaneous formation of online communities. The main challenges discussed refer to the consensus-building nature of content creation in Wikipedia, making practical applications of findings somewhat limited, as well as data compilation difficulties.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the following research question: Are there grammatical textual differences between Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia? Specifically, this study will focus on the articles for "Communism" and "Dwight D. Eisenhower" that appear in the online version of Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia. Using a grammatical textual analysis, the study finds there is little difference grammatically between Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia though they are very different types of systems. There are several different types of textual or contextual methods that could expand on this initial approach to find differences between Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia.<br>Department of Telecommunications

Abstract:
The proportion of women editors on the English language Wikipedia has for years been known to be very low. The purpose of this thesis is to see if this gender gap exists on the Swedish language Wikipedia as well, and investigate the reasons behind it. To do this, three methods are used. Firstly a literature review is conducted, looking at women in computing and how Wikipedia works and how it was founded. Secondly, user behavior and activity-levels are measured through means of a database analysis of editors and edits. And thirdly, a survey is distributed, aimed at both readers and editors of Swedish Wikipedia, gathering some 2700 respondents. The results indicate that there is indeed a big disproportion, and that only between 13-19% of editors are women. The findings did not indicate readers of the encyclopedia having any strong negative preconceptions about Wikipedia or its community. However when looking at reasons for not contributing, women were significantly more likely to perceive themselves as not competent enough to edit. Computer skills were found to be an important factor for trying out editing in the first place, and Wikipedia’s connection to a male-dominated computing/programming culture is put forth as a reason for the resilience of the gender gap. The difference in men’s and women’s communication styles in relation to the climate Wikipedia’s policies and guidelines is also discussed.<br>Andelen kvinnor som redigerar engelskspråkiga Wikipedia har visats vara väldigt låg.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior<br>In this research we promote a reflection about the passage that we believe to exist from an (illusory) totality of knowledges discursively constructed in encyclopedias regarding versions spatially limited of this technological instrument to an impossibility of construction of this totality on Wikipedia virtual site, considered for many subjects as the complete encyclopedia . From an intermediate theoretical position between French Discourse Analysis and History of Ideas, we believe that, even though a discourse about the Wikipedia circulates signifying it as the encyclopedia where the numerical totality of knowledges could be stored , due to Wikipedia to be open to collaborative edition and to introduce itself as a indefinitely open net, make impossible any attempt of apprehension of all . In order to problematize around these questions, initially, we give a brief overview concerning of total knowledge utopia found in fullness on the Library of Alexandria, for the reason what we understand that such utopia is constitutive of the imaginary about encyclopedia. After this overview, we looked for understanding what is being considered as an encyclopedia in the course of time. Following, we focus the Wikipedia and the discourse that circulates about it.

Abstract:
This thesis is called “Citation needed – the perceived credibility of Wikipedia among higheducation students”. The purpose of this thesis is to discover the opinions about the credibilityof Wikipedia among high education students. The assumption is that students are aware ofbeing source criticizing and do not directly cite Wikipedia in academic works. The main research question is: what are the views of the perceived credibility of theinformation on Wikipedia among high education students? The theoretical framework is made out of previous research specific related to Wikipediabut also theories around memory creation, assessment of sources and credibility. The method used is qualitative, with semi-structured interviews. The material consists ofinterviews with nine participants. Their answers are transcribed and presented in themes andthen analyzed. The main results are that the perceived credibility of the information on Wikipedia amongthe students is that it is fairly credible and their views of the encyclopedia are that it is fastupdated and neutral. They also believe that Wikipedia isn’t for academic usage so in allaspects the students do not make a thoroughly assessment of the encyclopedia’s credibility. Further implications are that Wikipedia would be ruined if anyone tried to make itacademic. Wikipedia fulfills an educational tool for the public even though it is not alwayscorrect. It is important to be reminded that Wikipedia contains errors but no other source iscompletely flawless either. In that sense it would be smarter to start a new encyclopedia, ifthere is such a need, perhaps open for professors only and would in the end only containvetted information, however mostly/only in academic fields. The length of the thesis is 56 pages in total and approximately 21 000 words. Keywords: Wikipedia, encyclopedias, source criticism, credibility, Nationalencyclopedin, students, in-depth interviews.

Abstract:
This dissertation describes WikiRank, an unsupervised method of assigning relative values to elements of a broad coverage encyclopedic information source in order to identify those entries that may be relevant to a given piece of text. The valuation given to an entry is based not on textual similarity but instead on the links that associate entries, and an estimation of the expected frequency of visitation that would be given to each entry based on those associations in context. This estimation of relative frequency of visitation is embodied in modifications to the random walk interpretation of the PageRank algorithm. WikiRank is an effective algorithm to support natural language processing applications. It is shown to exceed the performance of previous machine learning algorithms for the task of automatic topic identification, providing results comparable to that of human annotators. Second, WikiRank is found useful for the task of recognizing text-based paraphrases on a semantic level, by comparing the distribution of attention generated by two pieces of text using the encyclopedic resource as a common reference. Finally, WikiRank is shown to have the ability to use its base of encyclopedic knowledge to recognize terms from different ontologies as describing the same thing, and thus allowing for the automatic generation of mapping links between ontologies. The conclusion of this thesis is that the "knowledge access heuristic" is valuable and that a ranking process based on a large encyclopedic resource can form the basis for an extendable general purpose mechanism capable of identifying relevant concepts by association, which in turn can be effectively utilized for enumeration and comparison at a semantic level.
