Abstract:
This article concerns the nonparametric Fisher–Pitman tests for paired replicates and independent samples. After outlining the theory of exact tests, I derive Monte Carlo simulations for both of them. Simulations can be useful if one deals with many observations because of the complexity of the algorithms in regard to sample sizes. The tests are designed to be a more powerful alternative to the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney rank-sum test if the observations are given on at least an interval scale. The results gained by Monte Carlo versions of the tests are accurate enough in comparison to the exact versions. Finally, I give examples for using both supplemented tests.

Abstract:
The biodeterioration of painted walls have been associated with several biological mechanisms such as organic acid production and enzymatic activity of microorganisms amongst other factors. Therefore, this study aims to reveal the involvement of amylases and proteases from indigenous microbes on biodeteriorating painted walls. Microbial strains isolated from biodeteriorating painted walls of selected buildings in Lagos, Nigeria and previously characterized as belonging to the genera Pseudomonas, Candida, Fusarium, Aspergillus, Cerrena and Meyerozyma were used in this study. Amylolytic and proteolytic activities at varying conditions of temperature, pH, incubation time and substrate concentrations were tested. To bridge the knowledge gaps regarding statistical quantification of enzymatic mechanisms in biodeterioration, the Wilcoxon signed rank sum test was used to test the hypothesis that amylolytic/proteolytic activities are equal at all conditions tested. The conditions for optimal activity were observed to be 24h, 37oC, pH 2 and 0.01% substrate concentration and 48h, 25oC, pH 2, and 1% substrate concentration for amylase and protease respectively. Wilcoxon signed rank test revealed that amylolytic and proteolytic activities do not impact aesthetics on painted walls equally at all environmental conditions considered.

Abstract:
Background:

Machine learning relies on a hybrid of analytics, including regression analyses. There have been no attempts to deploy a scale-down transformation of data to enhance linear regression models.

Objectives:

We aim to optimize linear regression models by implementing data transformation function to scale down all variables in an attempt to minimize the sum of squared error.

Materials and Methods:

We implemented non-Bayesian statistics using SPSS and MatLab. We used Excel to generate 40 trials of linear regression models, and each has 1,000 observations. We utilized SPSS to conduct regression analyses, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Cronbach’s alpha statistics to evaluate the performance of the optimization model.

Results:

The scale-down transformation succeeded by significantly reducing the sum of squared errors [absolute Z-score=5.511, effect size=0.779, p-value<0.001, Wilcoxon signed-rank test]. Inter-item reliability testing confirmed the robust internal consistency of the model [Cronbach’s alpha=0.993].

Conclusions:

The optimization model is valuable for high-impact research based on regression. It can reduce the computational processing demands for powerful real-time and predictive analytics of big data.

Abstract:
Investigation and removal of unnatural variation in the processes of manufacturing, production and services require application of statistical process control. Control charts are the most famous and commonly used statistical process control tools to trace changes in the manufacturing and nonmanufacturing processes parameter(s). The nonparametric control charts become necessary when the distribution of underlying process is unknown or questionable. The nonparametric charts are robust alternative along with holding property of quick shift detection ability in process parameter(s). In this article, we have proposed nonparametric double exponentially weighted moving average chart based on Wilcoxon signed rank test under simple and ranked set sampling schemes for efficient monitoring of the process location. The proposed control charts are compared with classical exponentially weighted moving average, double exponentially weighted moving average, nonparametric exponentially weighted moving average sign, nonparametric exponentially weighted moving average signed rank, nonparametric cumulative sum signed rank charts using average run length and some other characteristics of run length distribution as performance measures. Comparison reveals that the proposed control charts performs better to detect all kinds of shifts in the process location than existing counterparts. A real-life application related to manufacturing process (the variable of interest is the diameter of piston ring) is also provided for the practical implementation of the proposed chart.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveTo assess the impact of an emergency intensive care unit (EICU) established concomitantly with a freestanding emergency department (ED) during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed records of all patients in Bellevue’s EICU from freestanding ED opening (December 10, 2012) until hospital inpatient reopening (February 7, 2013). Temporal and clinical data, and disposition upon EICU arrival, and ultimate disposition were evaluated.ResultsTwo hundred twenty-seven patients utilized the EICU, representing approximately 1.8% of freestanding ED patients. Ambulance arrival occurred in 31.6% of all EICU patients. Median length of stay was 11.55 hours; this was significantly longer for patients requiring airborne isolation (25.60 versus 11.37 hours, P<0.0001 by Wilcoxon rank sum test). After stabilization and treatment, 39% of EICU patients had an improvement in their disposition status (P<0.0001 by Wilcoxon signed rank test); upon interhospital transfer, the absolute proportion of patients requiring ICU and SDU resources decreased from 37.8% to 27.1% and from 22.2% to 2.7%, respectively.ConclusionsAn EICU attached to a freestanding ED achieved significant reductions in resource-intensive medical care. Flexible, adaptable care systems should be explored for implementation in disaster response. (Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2016;10:496–502)

Abstract:

The present thesis proposes new methods for obtaining objective and accurate diagnoses in modern healthcare. Non-invasive techniques have been used to examine or diagnose three different medical conditions, namely neuropathy among diabetics, radiotherapy induced erythema (skin redness) among breast cancer patients and diagnoses of cutaneous malignant melanoma. The techniques used were Near-InfraRed spectroscopy (NIR), Multi Frequency Bio Impedance Analysis of whole body (MFBIA-body), Laser Doppler Imaging (LDI) and Digital Colour Photography (DCP).

The neuropathy for diabetics was studied in papers I and II. The first study was performed on diabetics and control subjects of both genders. A separation was seen between males and females and therefore the data had to be divided in order to obtain good models. NIR spectroscopy was shown to be a viable technique for measuring neuropathy once the division according to gender was made. The second study on diabetics, where MFBIA-body was added to the analysis, was performed on males exclusively. Principal component analysis showed that healthy reference subjects tend to separate from diabetics. Also, diabetics with severe neuropathy separate from persons less affected.

The preliminary study presented in paper III was performed on breast cancer patients in order to investigate if NIR, LDI and DCP were able to detect radiotherapy induced erythema. The promising results in the preliminary study motivated a new and larger study. This study, presented in papers IV and V, intended to investigate the measurement techniques further but also to examine the effect that two different skin lotions, Essex and Aloe vera have on the development of erythema. The Wilcoxon signed rank sum test showed that DCP and NIR could detect erythema, which is developed during one week of radiation treatment. LDI was able to detect erythema developed during two weeks of treatment. None of the techniques could detect any differences between the two lotions regarding the development of erythema.

The use of NIR to diagnose cutaneous malignant melanoma is presented as unpublished results in this thesis. This study gave promising but inconclusive results. NIR could be of interest for future development of instrumentation for diagnosis of skin cancer.

Abstract:
Intransporterna modellerades även i StormTac.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the location of buying stocks in a Nordic cross-listed company matters in terms of 1) earning abnormal returns, or 2) gaining in optimizing the amount spent by buying the specific stock cheap. Nowadays, markets are becoming more integrated and if we believe in the efficient market hypothesis, prices of the same class of stocks paying the same dividend annually, of an MNC must be the same irrespective of the stock exchange it is listed upon. Though efficient market hypothesis exists in theory, market imperfection is a reality. All the Nordic (Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, Danish and Icelandic) firms listed on foreign stock exchanges in addition to their home market have been included in the sample. In fact, this sample represents 100% of the population. The daily prices of cross-listed stocks have been analyzed and conclusions have been drawn based on the mean returns and mean prices along with Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test statistics. The data have been analyzed over the last ten years capturing the recent economic cycle. The whole period has also been divided into three sub-periods to establish comparisons with the whole period. This paper reports that even though returns on cross-listed stocks are statistically same over all periods, prices of the stocks vary according to the location of listing. That is, investors can buy from a stock exchange where the specific stock is underpriced thereby decreasing the amount invested in absolute term and optimizing the amount spent if not the return. The returns and prices have analyzed using the local currency of the MNC’s country of origin and Special Drawing Rights (SDRs). No considerable differences on the returns or pattern of price movements have been observed while using two currencies.

Abstract:
Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) microscopy is a sensitive method for detecting difference in the morphology of biological cells. In this study FTIR spectra were obtained for uninfected cells, and cells infected with two different viruses. The spectra obtained are difficult to discriminate visually. Here we apply advanced statistical methods to the analysis of the spectra, to test if such spectra are useful for diagnosing viral infections in cells. Logistic Regression (LR) and Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) were used to build models which allow us to diagnose if spectral differences are related to infection state of the cells. A three-fold, balanced cross-validation method was applied to estimate the shrinkages of the area under the receiving operator characteristic curve (AUC), and specificities at sensitivities of 95%, 90% and 80%. AUC, sensitivity and specificity were used to gauge the goodness of the discrimination methods. Our statistical results shows that the spectra associated with different cellular states are very effectively discriminated. We also find that the overall performance of PLSR is better than that of LR, especially for new data validation. Our analysis supports the idea that FTIR microscopy is a useful tool for detection of viral infections in biological cells.

Abstract:
Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, one method of electromagnetic radiation for detecting specific cellular molecular structure, can be used to discriminate different types of cells. The objective is to find the minimum time (choice among 2 hour, 4 hour and 6 hour) to record FTIR readings such that different viruses can be discriminated. A new method is adopted for the datasets. Briefly, inner differences are created as the control group, and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test is used as the first selecting variable procedure in order to prepare the next stage of discrimination. In the second stage we propose either partial least squares (PLS) method or simply taking significant differences as the discriminator. Finally, k-fold cross-validation method is used to estimate the shrinkages of the goodness measures, such as sensitivity, specificity and area under the ROC curve (AUC). There is no doubt in our mind 6 hour is enough for discriminating mock from Hsv1, and Coxsackie viruses. Adeno virus is an exception.

Abstract:
碩士
國立高雄大學
統計學研究所
102
Wilcoxon rank sum test is a useful nonparametric method for testing the equality of distribution of two populations. It has greater efficiency than the t-test on heavy tail distribution, and is nearly as efficient as the t-test on normal distribution. In this paper, an extension of Wilcoxon test for interval censored data which are often found in longitudinal studies is provided. A series of simulation is given to show the performance of the proposed method and the power of our proposed test is better than Finkelstein (1986) and Sun (1996) in some circumstance. We also use our proposed teat to analyze three examples and show the results.

Abstract:
The impregnation of knitted Dacron grafts with biodegradable protein removes the need for preclotting at implantation. The effect of such impregnation on the thrombogenic potential of these prostheses is, however, unknown. We have compared the early thrombogenicity of two impregnated knitted Dacron grafts - Hemashield ( collagen-impregnated Dacron, Meadox) and Gelseal (gelatin-impregnated Dacron, Vascutek) -with conventionally preclotted knitted Dacron in an artificial circulation. Fresh, heparinised human blood, containing 111Indium-labelled platelets, was circulated around identical twin circuits of silicone tubing by a Sarns roller pump at 180 ml/min and 120 mmHg. Into each circuit a different 15 cm × 8 mm type of graft material was mounted. Changes in platelet count, platelet aggregation to collagen, plasma haemoglobin and blood radioactivity were recorded and after 60 minutes of perfusion each graft was sectioned and counted for radioactivity prior to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the luminal surface. The mean graft radioactivity divided by the mean blood radioactivity yields a Graft Activity Index (GAI) allowing comparison of platelet deposition and thus thrombogenicity.RESULTS: (mean ± s.e.m.) 8 examples of each graftSEM confirmed these findings with preclotted Dacron having the highest platelet deposition. Both impregnated grafts produced significant early haemolysis within 4 minutes of blood contact. Our findings indicate that the early thrombogenicity of these impregnated grafts is significantly less than conventionally preclotted Dacron, (p< 0.01, Wilcoxon signed rank test), despite the early haemolytic phenomenon and that Hemashield grafts are less thrombogenic than Gelseal grafts. Abstract:
Social media communities are usually formed by similarities among users. In educational social networks, several factors propitiate the user group generation, e.g. share the same academic environment or interested in common curricular. In order to explain the group formation resulted from educational social network, we applied two group profiling methods based on differentiation. Wilcoxon rank-sum test and PART rules algorithm were applied to a dataset available, the OJE educational social network. The performed experiments showed that the methods were effective to group profiling generation, characterizing 81.81% and 100% of groups, respectively.

Abstract:
The great importance that topics such as environmental protection and sustainability currently have for teenagers cannot be ignored. In addition to the Fridays for Future movement, the Shell Youth Study also confirms the personal involvement of young people with regard to the issue of sustainability. Recently conducted studies have demonstrated the immense influence of school on students and their attitudes towards sustainability. The combined effect of this positive impact of school lessons and the high level of personal involvement of teenagers or students regarding the topic of sustainability reveals a research topic that is addressed in the study at hand. Hereby, the focus lies on a group of students that is often overlooked in this context: students in vocational colleges. Using a survey consisting of 39 participants, the effect that teaching the topic of sustainability has on their attitudes towards this topic was investigated. To this end, two differently de-signed lessons were taught. The lesson concepts differ in their orientation: within the first one, the students dealt with sustainability from a consumer perspective; in the other, they dealt with sustainability from a company perspective. The evaluation of the questionnaires based on differently oriented dilemmas was carried out by means of a Wilcoxon signed-rank test.

Abstract:
Spectrum-based Fault Localization (SFL) approaches aim to efficiently localize faulty components from examining program behavior. This is done by collecting the execution patterns of various combinations of components and the corresponding outcomes into a spectrum. Efficient fault localization depends heavily on the quality of the spectra. Previous approaches, including the current state-of-the-art Density- Diversity-Uniqueness (DDU) approach, attempt to generate “good” test-suites by improving certain structural properties of the spectra. In this work, we propose a different approach, Multiverse Analysis, that considers multiple hypothetical universes, each corresponding to a scenario where one of the components is assumed to be faulty, to generate a spectrum that attempts to reduce the expected worst-case wasted effort over all the universes. Our experiments show that the Multiverse Analysis not just improves the efficiency of fault localization but also achieves better coverage and generates smaller test-suites over DDU, the current state-of-the-art technique. On average, our approach reduces the developer effort over DDU by over 16% for more than 92% of the instances. Further, the improvements over DDU are indeed statistically significant on the paired Wilcoxon Signed-rank test.
