Abstract:
I must begin with a few words about my predecessor in the Rouse Ball chair, Sir David Williams. David Williams has had a career of outstanding service to legal studies, to universities, in particular Cambridge, and to the wider public. After completing his studies, he became one of the formidable group at the University of Nottingham's Law Faculty. He went on to Oxford—he has told me that he went there as a missionary—and during his time there produced his pathbreaking books on official secrets and public order, Not in the Public Interest and Keeping the Peace. He was, it must be said, not the only Cambridge public lawyer-missionary in Oxford. Sir William Wade was also there. By 1967 it appears that two missionaries were no longer required, and David Williams returned to Cambridge. In 1982 he succeeded Wade—by now also back in Cambridge—as Rouse Ball Professor. He has been an important presence in the world of administrative law and his contribution to environmental issues has been enormous. We are delighted that now he has laid down the burdens of office as Vice-Chancellor he has returned to the Faculty— albeit to a different chair.

Abstract:
This debate with William Beik and David Parker concerns whether a capitalist bourgeoisie developed in the ancien régime. Parker asserts that, in 1789, this class at best was new and unfledged. Beik claims that it is unhistorical to speak of its existence. Addressing their arguments, I re-iterate that the existence of a capitalist bourgeoisie was of long standing. It emerged from the sixteenth century onwards, buoyed by primitive accumulation and strengthened itself even in the face of the so-called offensive of rent under seventeenth-century absolutism.

Abstract:
The present work tries to analyze the moral philosophy of William David Ross. First, Ross's ethics precedents are exposed, focusing on three authors against whom he acknowledges entering into discussion: Kant, the utilitarians and Moore. This is the aim of the second chapter. Next, Ross's proposal is explained through three axes: 1) the theory of moral knowledge, where his well-known intuitionist theory will appear; 2) the doctrine of correction, composed of deontological pluralism; 3) and the doctrine of good, in which its axiology appears. The following three chapters, respectively, will be dedicated to all this. Finally, we provide the critical vision of some Ross followers and propose half a dozen conclusions.

Abstract:
SUMMARYThe period 1875–1925 was remarkable in the history of parasitology mainly for the elucidation of the life cycles of parasites causing important parasitic diseases and the incrimination of vectors in their transmission. These discoveries were made by a small number of scientists working in the tropics a number of whom were Scots. Sir Patrick Manson, the discoverer of the mosquito transmission of filarial worms, was instrumental in directly or indirectly encouraging other Scots including Douglas Argyll-Robertson, David Blacklock, David Bruce, David Cunningham, Robert Leiper, William Leishman, George Low, Muriel Robertson and Ronald Ross, who all made significant discoveries across a wide spectrum of tropical diseases. Among these, William Leishman, Robert Leiper and Muriel Robertson were all graduates of the University of Glasgow and their achievements in the fields of leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, dracunculiasis and African sleeping sickness, together with subsequent developments in these fields, are the subjects of the ten papers in this Special Issue of Parasitology.

The 1990's über conspiracy-theory television series The X-Files was a decade-defining and culture-reflecting mosh pit of UFOs, extraterrestrials, psychics, demons, monsters, mutants, shape-shifters, serial killers, paranormal phenomena, urban legends turned real, corporate cabals and government cover-ups, and leakages unveiled by a deep-throat-like ‘cigarette smoking man’ character played, ironically, by real-life skeptic William B. Davis. Gillian Anderson's skeptical FBI agent Dana Scully played off David Duchovny's believing character Fox Mulder, whose slogans became posterized pop-culture catch-phrases ‘I want to believe’ and ‘The truth is out there’.

Abstract:
Religious thought often assumes that the principle of physical causal completeness (PCC) is false. But those who explicitly deny or doubt PCC, including William Alston, W. D. Hart, Tim Crane, Paul Moser and David Yandell, Charles Taliaferro, Keith Yandell, Dallas Willard, William Vallicella, Frank Dilley, and, recently, David Chalmers, have ignored not only the explicit but also the implicit grounds for acceptance of PCC. I review the explicit grounds, and extend the hitherto implicit grounds, which together constitute a greater challenge to contemporary religious philosophy than has been realized. Religious philosophers need to find a better way around PCC than has been found, or, if PCC is unavoidable, religious philosophers need to work toward a worldview that both accepts PCC and defends strong forms of religious experience.

Abstract:
David Ollis was one of the most influential and significant members of the group of British chemists who rose to prominence during the 1950s and 1960s. In common with other members of this group, he made important and lasting contributions to both the theory and the practice of his chosen discipline. Although the growth of natural product chemistry was less dramatic during the 1970s and beyond, he transposed his activities increasingly into mechanistic studies and so remained one of the leaders of chemistry in the UK. He occupied the Chair of Organic Chemistry at Sheffield University from 1963 to his retirement in 1990, and thereafter continued to be involved in chemistry through an honorary appointment at Birmingham University until his death in 1999.
