Abstract:
The fin de siècle was a time of change in nationalism, culture, art, science and religion. Nations and groups grew into defining themselves through movements such as Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau. Some groups sought to define themselves through reviving aspects of their old cultures as inspiration. For instance, Finland found inspiration in the Kalavala and William Morris inspired Arts and Crafts through England’s Middle Ages. Scotland had many pasts to choose from for inspiration. Patrick Geddes found inspiration in its Celtic past. Geddes is best known for his work as a town planner and so

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis examines fictional representations of the figure of the black African albino in selected novels by French writers Didier Destremau and Patrick Grainville, and Guinean writer Williams Sassine. Exploring how and why French and African Francophone novelists position black African albinos as protagonists in their writing, I consider the implications of their treatment of this figure in relation to colonial and postcolonial concepts of African identity.

I establish that the aesthetic differences that viewers perceive between the different Harry Potter films are largely due to the musical approaches of composers John Williams, Patrick Doyle, and Nicholas Hooper over the course of four director/composer collaborations for the fi

Trautman, Andrea Dominique. "The voice of the many in the one : modernism’s unveiled listening to minority presence in the fiction of William Faulkner and Patrick White." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/14815.

Full text
Abstract:
By comparing the novels of William Faulkner and Patrick White, this thesis reconsiders modernism's elitism and solipsism by revealing within them a critical interest in liberating minority perspective. Theoretical debates which continue to insist on modernism's inherent distance from the identity politics which front the postmodernist movement are overlooking modernism's deeply embedded evaluative mechanisms which work to expose and criticize the activity of psychic and social co-optation. Faulkner and White are both engaged in fictionally tracing the complexities of a failing patriarch

Abstract:
Justice Deane was a member of the High Court from 1982 until 1995. This thesis examines Deane's constitutional jurisprudence during this period and argues that his decisions were permeated by themes and principles forming a coherent vision of the Constitution and its interpretation. Although voiced most fully in Theophanous v Herald and Weekly Times (1994) 182 CLR 104, Deane's constitutional vision was evident from his earliest High Court decisions. Central to Deane's constitutional philosophy was his concept of 'the people'. Deane regarded 'the people' as the source of legal authority

Abstract:
“Telling Otherwise: Rewriting History, Gender, and Genre in Africa and the African Diaspora” examines counter-discursive postcolonial rewritings. In my first chapter, “Re-Writing the Canon,” I examine two works that rewrite canonical texts from the European tradition, Jean Rhys’s retelling of the life of Jane Eyre’s Bertha in Wide Sargasso Sea and Maryse Condé’s relocation of Wuthering Heights to the Caribbean in La migration des coeurs. In this chapter, I contend that re-writing functions not only as a response, as a “writing back” to the canon, but as a creative appropriation of and critical
