Abstract:
William Saroyan’s novel The Human Comedy () may be the first significant American novel adapted from a screenplay. The author had been contracted to create a film for MGM, but with representative Hollywood chicanery, Saroyan was done out of his manuscript and had to settle for a mere ‘from the story by’ credit. No film crystallizes the MGM vision of America while implying the promises of readjustment to come when the war is over more completely than The Human Comedy. Louis B. Mayer believed it was the greatest film ever produced by MGM. It had a tremendous impact at the time; even critics who lambasted its sentimentality could not deny its melodramatic power. In a marketing twist, the film was advertised as being based on ‘Saroyan’s great novel’ even though the novel had not yet been published. The film may be dated and neglected, but the novel remains in print and is among Saroyan’s most important works. The film and novel retain the screenplay’s extensive dialogue and both raise questions about cinematic and literary narrative.

Abstract:
Several plays by William Saroyan written in the mid-1930s reached the Soviet stage only during the Khrushchev Thaw, in the early 1960s. The paper focuses on the first Soviet productions of Saroyan’s play My Heart’s in the Highlands, premiered in Armenian (Yerevan) in 1961, and in 1962 staged in Russian by the Mayakovsky Moscow Theatre. The paper analyses the reasons for such a late appearance of Saroyan’s dramas on the Russian stage, traces how Saroyan’s trip to the USSR in 1960 prompted the staging of his work in Armenia’s capital, which thereon paved the way for its Moscow production. The theatrical history of Saroyan’s work in the USSR is viewed in a wide social, political and cultural Soviet-American macro-context during the Cold War. The paper based on the rare materials from the museum of the Mayakovsky Moscow Theatre, focuses on the reception of the play and its production in the Soviet Union. The director Ya.S. Tsitsinovski strove to transmit the elevated, poetic spirit of Saroyan’s work and find a vivid expressive form, which was not typical for the Mayakovsky Theatre of N.P. Okhlopkov’s time. Its appearance on the Moscow stage in 1962 marked the beginning of the scene history of the American author’s drama in our country. The paper is aimed at reconstructing the theatrical history of Saroyan’s plays in the USSR.

Resumo: Este estudo focaliza a primeira fase literária de William Saroyan, demonstrando que a mesma possui maior profundidade e riqueza em termos de forma e conteúdo do que observada pelos críticos. A análise de uma seleção de seis contos de The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze and Other Stories revela a presença, nesta fase literária, de uma dimensão existencial através da presença de um protagonista que possui as características do Herói Absurdo, e o fato de que este conteúdo existencial é eficientemente estabelecido pelo uso do conto lírico revelando o aspecto inovador, porém não reconhecido, do trabalho de William Saroyan. A Introdução inicia-se pela revisão da crítica desfavorável inicialmente recebida pelo primeiro livro de Saroyan, seguida por uma discussão de sua extensa carreira literária, herança étnica e influências, terminando com o objetivo deste trabalho e a metodologia adotada. O Capitulo 2 trata especificamente de considerações teóricas sobre o tema do Herói Absurdo, fornecendo uma estrutura conceitual baseada nos escritos de Albert Camus, nos permitindo detectar os aspectos existenciais e absurdos da primeira fase de ficção curta de Saroyan. A primeira parte do Capitulo 3 focaliza alguns aspectos teóricos do Conto Lírico, já que Saroyan fez uso desta modalidade do conto para a produção expressionista de seus temas existenciais, seguidos pela análise individual de cada conto escolhido. Esta parte é concluida com uma descrição do estilo literário de Saroyan nesta coleção, argumentando que Saroyan desenvolveu sua própria "voz" literária. O capitulo 4 realiza uma combinação dos elementos fornecidos pela análise dos contos individuais juntamente com os conceitos teóricos do Absurdo, construindo o perfil do Herói Saroyano presente nos mesmos, revelando o fato de que este protagonista possui as características do Herói Absurdo. A Conclusão demonstra que a combinação destes aspectos revela que a primeira fase literária de Saroyan não recebeu uma avaliação crítica apropriada, já que tais importantes aspectos foram ignorados e seu trabalho imerecidamente relegado como literatura de qualidade inferior por seus críticos, que deixaram de observar que nesta fase Saroyan inovou tanto em termos de forma como de conteúdo, através de contos que possuem valor literário e artístico permanente.

Superati «novant’anni d’impazienza» e dopo un lungo periodo votato all’autocommento e all’esplorazione delle proprie intenzioni, Raffaele La Capria ha raccolto le sue opere in due Meridiani curati da Silvio Perrella. La Capria ne ha celebrato l’uscita nella prolusione inaugurale di Salerno Letteratura, poi confluita nel breve autoritratto narrativo "Introduzione a me stesso" (2014). In questa sede, l’autore è tornato su alcuni punti essenziali della sua riflessione sulla scrittura, come la relazione, reciproca e ineludibile, fra tradizione e contemporaneità. All’epilogo del «romanzo involontario» di una vita, La Capria guarda retrospettivamente alla propria esperienza come ad un’autentica educazione intellettuale. Perciò, muovendo da un’intervista inedita del 2015, riportata integralmente in appendice, la tesi ha l’obiettivo di ricostruire l’apprendistato letterario di La Capria dai primi anni Trenta, quando l’autore ancora frequentava il ginnasio, fino all’inizio dei Sessanta, quando ottenne il premio che ne avrebbe assicurato il successo. Il percorso, che riesamina l’intera bibliografia lacapriana nella sua varietà e nella sua stratificazione, si articola in una serie di fasi interdipendenti: la partecipazione indiretta alle iniziative dei GUF (intorno alle riviste «IX maggio» e «Pattuglia»); l’incursione nel giornalismo e l’impegno culturale nell’immediato dopoguerra (sulle pagine di «Latitudine» e di «SUD»); l’attività di traduttore dal francese e dall’inglese (da André Gide a T.S. Eliot); l’impiego alla RAI come autore e conduttore radiofonico (con trasmissioni dedicate a Orwell, Stevenson, Saroyan e Faulkner); la collaborazione con «Il Gatto Selvatico», la rivista dell’ENI voluta da Enrico Mattei e diretta da Attilio Bertolucci; e le vicende editoriali dei suoi primi due romanzi, “Un giorno d’impazienza” (1952) e “Ferito a morte” (1961), fino alla conquista dello Strega. La rilettura dell’opera di uno scrittore semi-autobiografico come La Capria, attraverso il costante riscontro di fonti giornalistiche, testimonianze epistolari e documenti d’archivio che avvalorano e occasionalmente smentiscono la sua versione dei fatti, diventa allora un’occasione per immergersi nella sua mitografia personale e avventurarsi in territori finora poco esplorati: come la ricostruzione del suo profilo culturale, a partire dal milieu in cui La Capria vive e opera, o l’incidenza delle letture e delle esperienze giovanili sulla sua prassi letteraria.

Abstract:
As a particular cultural production, migration literature, increasingly heralded as a new world literature, internationalised literature or world fiction – is a form of transnational writing, concerned mostly with cosmopolitan issues. The universalism of migration literature, however, is based on national or ethnic tradition. Moreover, it is manifested through original life experiences and attitudes that are typical of ethnic expressions of identities. The significant point that this paper emphasises is the fact that William Saroyan is an author who represents a dynamic Armenian-American cultural blend, moving both universal and ethnic literary expressions to new heights. His works demonstrate clearly both his universality and his adherence to national heritage – his ethnic and family identities are employed in his distinct western settings and tones.
