This thesis discusses how the hymen is described historically in Swedish sex manuals between 1889-1904, along with descriptions of defloration and chastity. The analysis is based on the assumption that science and gender are social and cultural constructions.  The purpose of this thesis is to examine late nineteenth-early twentieth century’s conceptions of women, sexuality and chastity by discussing this period's descriptions of the hymen in a historical context. This study is concluded by reading and contextualizing sex manuals published in Sweden around the turn of the century. The conclusio

In The Souls of Black Folk (1903), W.E.B. Du Bois theorized that black peoples were viewed behind a metaphorical “veil” that consisted of three interrelated aspects: the skin as an indication of African Americans’ difference from their white counterparts, white people’s lack of capacity to see African Americans as Americans, and African Americans’ lack of capacity to see themselves outside of the labels white America has given them. This, according to Du Bois, resulted in the gift and curse of “double consciousness,” the feeling that one’s identity is divided. As African Americans fought for s

Abstract Rotating stall is an unsteady flow phenomenon in flow rate reduction process of axial compressor. Single or multiple stall cells can be found in blade passage, rotating circumferentially at frequency ranging from 20% to 80% of compressor rotating frequency. Rotating stall may further lead to surge, then mass flow and pressure ratio of the compressor decrease rapidly while vibration amplitude of bearing fulcrum increases significantly, which would affect safety operation of the aero-engine. Engine experiments are more difficult, the surge more violent and the signals usually contaminated by noise. Nevertheless industry actors – whilst generally supporting the idea – still see “cost and perception remain barriers to green chemistry uptake”.
