Whyte, Christopher. "William Livingston/Uilleam Macdhunleibhe (1808-70) : a survey of his poetry and prose." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1991. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3982/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a survey of the work in poetry and prose of William Livingston or Uilleam Mac Dhunl`eibhe, the Islay bard (1808-70). The version of his English surname without final `e' has been preferred because it is used in the definitive, 1882 edition of his poems and throughout the text (but not in the title) of the section of his own clan in the Vindication. The first chapter, `Biography and Background', gathers the available information on the poet's life, and attempts to set him in the context of the cultural, social and economic situation of Islay during the century preceding his birth. The second chapter, `The Intellectual Background', investigates Livingston's reading and his knowledge and use of historical and antiquarian texts. His familiarity with the traditionary version of the origins of the Scottish monarchy, elaborated by patriotic historians before the Union, is especially interesting. Chapter Three, `Polemicist and Historian', looks in detail at a work Livingston edited for publication, MacNichol's remarks on Dr Johnson's account of his journey through Gaelic Scotland, before turning to the poet's longest prose work, the Vindication of the Celtic Character. His shorter pamphlets and the incomplete History of Scotland are also examined. The fourth and fifth chapters explore Livingston's attitude to James Macpherson and to the Gaelic version of his Ossian, and attempt to decide to what extent and in what way he was influenced by the earlier poet. Explicit references to Macpherson in the poetry and prose are surveyed before the triangular relationship between Livingston the poet, Macpherson's work, and ballad material of various degrees of genuineness is discussed. The next two chapters offer close readings of the two major battle poems, `Na Lochalannaich an Ile' and `Bl`ar Shunadail', while Chapters Eight and Nine look at the shorter battle poems, ranging from Mons Graupius, in the first century of the Christian era, to the battle at Gruinard Bay on Islay, which took place just before the union of the crowns, and the battles of Alma and Balaclava in the Crimean War. Chapter Ten is devoted to Livingston's poetry of the Clearances. Its two main focuses are `Cuimhneachan Bhraid-Alba' and `Fios thun a' Bh`aird', and the thesis ends with a close reading of this, perhaps his most famous poem.

Hodder, Mike. "Petrarch in English : political, cultural and religious filters in the translation of the 'Rerum vulgarium fragmenta' and 'Triumphi' from Geoffrey Chaucer to J.M. Synge." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2013. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:49cdf913-cd2a-48c6-bf1e-533052018285.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with one key aspect of the reception of the vernacular poetry of Francesco Petrarca (Petrarch), namely translations and imitations of the Rerum vulgarium fragmenta (Rvf) and Triumphi in English. It aims to provide a more comprehensive survey of the vernacular Petrarch’s legacy to English literature than is currently available, with a particular focus on some hitherto critically neglected texts and authors. It also seeks to ascertain to what degree the socio-historical phenomena of religion, politics, and culture have influenced the translations and imitations in question. The approach has been both chronological and comparative. This strategy will demonstrate with greater clarity the monumental effect of the Elizabethan Reformation on the English reception of Petrarch. It proposes a solution to the problem of the long gap between Geoffrey Chaucer’s re-writing of Rvf 132 and the imitations of Wyatt and Surrey framed in the context of Chaucer’s sophisticated imitative strategy (Chapter I). A fresh reading of Sir Philip Sidney’s Astrophil and Stella is offered which highlights the author’s misgivings about the dangers of textual misinterpretation, a concern he shared with Petrarch (Chapter II). The analysis of Edmund Spenser’s Amoretti and Epithalamion in the same chapter reveals a hitherto undetected Ovidian subtext to Petrarch’s Rvf 190. Chapter III deals with two English versions of the Triumphi: I propose a date for Lord Morley’s translation which suggests it may be the first post- Chaucerian English engagement with Petrarch; new evidence is brought to light which identifies the edition of Petrarch used by William Fowler as the source text for his Triumphs of Petrarcke. The fourth chapter constitutes the most extensive investigation to date of J. M. Synge’s engagement with the Rvf, and deals with the question of translation as subversion. On the theoretical front, it demonstrates how Synge’s use of “folk-speech” challenges Venuti’s binary foreignising/domesticating system of translation categorisation.

Johnson, Alexander James Cook. "Charting the imperial will : colonial administration & the General Survey of British North America, 1764-1775." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3458.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores how colonial administrators on each side of the Atlantic used the British Survey of North America to serve their governments’ as well as their personal objectives. Specifically, it connects the execution and oversight of the General Survey in the northern and southern theatres, along with the intelligence it provided, with the actions of key decision-makers and influencers, including the Presidents of the Board of Trade (latterly, the Secretaries of the American Department) and key provincial governors. Having abandoned their posture of ‘Salutary Neglect’ towards colonial affairs in favour of one that proactively and more centrally sought ways to develop and exploit their North American assets following the Severn Years’ War, the British needed better geographic information to guide their decision making. Thus, the General Survey of British North America, under the umbrella of the Board of Trade, was conceived. Officially sponsored from 1764-1775, the programme aimed to survey and analyse the attributes and economic potential of Britain’s newly acquired regions in North America, leading to an accurate general map of their North American empire when joined to other regional mapping programmes. The onset of the American Revolution brought an inevitable end to the General Survey before a connected map could be completed. Under the excellent leadership of Samuel Holland, the surveyor general of the Northern District, however, the British administration received surveys and reports that were of great relevance to high-level administration. In the Southern District, Holland’s counterpart, the mercurial William Gerard De Brahm, while producing reports of high quality, was less able to juggle the often conflicting priorities of provincial and London-based stakeholders. Consequently, results were less successful. De Brahm was recalled in 1771, leaving others to complete the work.

Ramprashad, Oakley. "From spaces of mercy to sites of sanctuary: a historical survey of Canada’s federal prison libraries." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/11974.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the inception of the first modern Canadian carceral structure in 1835, the prison library has existed. The condition of the prison libraries in Canadian federal institutions, as well as the diversity and quantity of their content has changed dramatically over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The modern-day federal prison library mirrors, in many ways, its “outside” Canadian public library counterpart. This thesis does not attempt to dispute or affirm the likeness between the Canadian prison and public library. Instead, in this thesis, I examine the evolution of the library from a space that reinforced hegemonic carceral control to a space where inmates could seek refuge and sanctuary. The first half of the thesis charts the emergence of the library as a, what I have termed, space mercy. This conceptualization of the library is inspired by Douglas Hay’s concept of mercy, in criminal law, as an ideological tool to reinforce hegemony. In the second half of the thesis I present a case study of the William Head Institution on Vancouver Island. Through the consulting of inmate publications, interviews, questionnaires, and other primary source material I posit that the prison library has evolved into a site of sanctuary. This term is taken from Laura Madokoro’s public history project Sites of Sanctuary. The site of sanctuary differs from the space of mercy in a number of ways and marked a distinct shift in the function and use of the prison library, by inmates, in Canada’s federal carceral institutions.

Cameron, Darby. "An agent of change: William Drewry and land surveying in British Columbia, 1887-1929." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/1608.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1887, following the completion of the CPR to the Pacific, William Stewart Drewry took part in the Topographical Survey of Canada's first experiment with photographic surveying, which he applied to the Rocky Mountain Railway Belt. He then surveyed the rich mining districts of BC during the Kootenay hardrock mining boom (1893-1909). In 1909, he became BC's first and only Chief Water Commissioner and, in 1911, he returned to surveying as BC's Inspector of Surveys. From 1913 until his retirement in 1929, he surveyed for government and in private practice. Throughout his career, Drewry operated between two land systems: first, a system based on customary rights and local obligations; and, second, a system based on private property and market exchange. Drewry implemented the latter capitalist system, attempting to empower the settlement society, which had the effect of ensuring corporate dominance and, to Drewry's dismay, monopolization of the BC landscape.

In view of the willing of owners for dogs’ health and medical care is increasing. But in Taiwan, the canine heartworm disease (CHWD) is still an epidemic disease which is harmful and preventable. Compared with some countries-Europe and America, the CHWD epidemic rate is still high. Probably the owners’ willing for the CHWD disease medical treatment in Taiwan is lower than other countries. The research was designed to analysis three groups. First group, comparing with the willing to treat the CHWD in two groups of owners during quarantine period (quarantine subgroup) and the patient dogs treated in National Taiwan University Animal Hospital (NTU subgroup). Second group, comparing with the willing to treat the CHWD in three subgroups of owner who carried the dogs treated in National Taiwan University Animal Hospital (NTU subgroup) and the animal hospital of Tao-yuan county (Tao-yuan subgroup) as well as the students who raise dogs in National Taiwan University(student subgroup). Third group, comparing with the willing to treat the CHWD in breeder’s importers (import subgroup) and native dogs’ brokers (native subgroup). In results of the first group, revealed that the ratio of considering the medical payment in NTU subgroup is two times than quarantine subgroup and over 90% owners have heard about the CHWD disease. The ratios of having the CHWD test, treating with positive result and never preventing are 58%, 100% and 58% respectively in NTU subgroup and 67%, 100% and 38% respectively in quarantine subgroup. The major reason why the NTU owners do not prevent with the CHWD is that they think indoor dogs will never be bit by mosquitoes. The willing to treat mild infection is lower in NTU owners and there are significant differences in owners’ education level, income per year and routine health examination (p<0.001) between two subgroups. The quarantine subgroup have tendency (p<0.001) to take prevention, test before prevention and pay preventive fees. Investigation revealed that both NTU and quarantine subgroups have high willing to treat and prevent the CHWD(> 80%). In results of the second group, revealed that the ratios of considering the medical payment in Tao-yuan and student subgroups are two times than NTU subgroup. Only 65% and 79% owners have heard about the CHWD disease in student and Tao-yuan subgroups. The ratios of having the CHWD test, treating with positive result and never preventing are 69%, 100% and 68% respectively in student subgroup and 67%, 100% and 75% respectively in Tao-yuan subgroup. The ratios who had taken prevention and tests in NTU subgroup are more than in the other subgroups. The willing to treat sub-clinical and mild infection is lower in Tao-yuan owners and there are significant differences in owners’ income per year, dog’s age, the periods of owners to raise dogs, owners ever heard about the CHWD and routine health examination (p<0.001) between three subgroups. In results of the third group, revealed that the ratio of considering the medical payment in native subgroup is two times than import subgroup and 100% breeders in both subgroups have heard about the CHWD disease. The ratios of having the CHWD test, treating with positive result and never preventing are 71%, 50% and 41.7% respectively in native subgroup and 56%, 63.6% and 67% respectively in import subgroup. The major reason why the native and import subgroups do not prevent with the CHWD is that they consider do nothing is the best way. The willing to treat sub-clinical, mild and severe infection is lower in native subgroup. Investigation revealed that native subgroup have lower willing to treat and prevent the CHWD. The result of this study revealed that the government needs to emphasis the importance of the CHWD prevention and propagate the owners and breeders to treat and prevent CHWD. During quarantine, propagating both quarantine owners and import breeders to take prevention of CHWD is also important.

Hutten, Willem. "The 1806 Battle of Blaauwberg: an archaeological perspective." Diss., 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/25705.

Full text
Abstract:
Text in English with abstracts in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa
British forces captured the Cape of Good Hope from the Batavian Government in 1806. The archaeological investigation into the Battle of Blaauwberg aims to identify the strategic use of the landscape by both sides focusing on specific geographic areas. Metal detector surveys and the mapping of archaeological material clarified the various battle positions within the reconstructed historical environment. Analysis of the artefacts provided insight into their use and the strategies followed by both armies. Altogether the evidence illuminated the use of the landscape and its influence on the course of the battle. This unique multi-pronged study of a South African battlefield and its material cultural record sheds new light on the 1806 battle, thereby complementing and refining prevailing historical interpretations. It explores methodological issues and approaches that are critical to the domain of battlefield archaeology in South Africa, where a large number of battle sites still await archaeological investigation.
