Abstract:
On 21 November 1853, Charles Dickens wrote to his wife from Florence, complaining about his friend and travelling-companion, fellow novelist Wilkie Collins:On music too, he is very learned, and sometimes almost drives me into a frenzy by humming and whistling whole overtures -with not one movement correctly remembered from the beginning to the end. I was obliged to ask him, the day before yesterday, to leave off whistling the overture to William Tell. ‘For by Heaven,’ said I, ‘there's something the matter with your ear — it must be the cotton which plays the Devil with the commonest tune.’

Abstract:
Progress toward the institutionalization of macromarketing continues to occur. This article addresses the suggestion, implicit in Robert F. Lusch’s “Long Macro View,” that the institutional norms of macromarketing deserve scrutiny. Specifically, this article argues that insights on macromarketing’s existing and appropriate institutional norms can be found in (1) the first, truly marketing, academic journal article ever written, “Some Problems in Market Distribution,” (2) the first macromarketing conference held at the University of Colorado in 1976, (3) the “four eras” historical analysis of aggregate marketing systems by William Wilkie and Elizabeth Moore, and (4) the service- dominant-logic of Stephen Vargo and Robert F. Lusch. This article argues that these works suggest fifteen institutional norms for macromarketing scholars to consider, discuss, and evaluate.

Abstract:
The article presents an analysis of the implementation of the category of intertextuality in the novel «Affinity» (1999) by the British writer Sarah Ann Waters. The aim of the work was to trace how the intertextual dialogue with the Victorian literature contributes to the formation of the feminist issues of the work. It is revealed that the main pretexts when creating a novel for Waters were «Little Dorrit» by Charles John Huffam Dickens, «Aurora Leigh» by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, «The Turn of the Screw» by Henry James, and novels by William Wilkie Collins. «Affinity» has elements of Gothic narrative, a detective, a sensational novel, the Newgate novel, picaresque novel, contributing to the formation of women's issues. The dialogue with Victorianism allows Waters to raise issues of gender inequality in the past and present, the exploitation of women, and the rights of individuals to realise their sexual identity. For Waters, turning to Victorianism is a way to draw attention to issues that, according to the writer, are still topical in British culture, such as sexuality, class and gender.

Poulson, Sally. "Reversed perspectives : a re-examination of the later novels of William Wilkie Collins." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2000. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/51480/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although a considerable amount of research has been done on Collins's sensation fiction, very little critical attention has been paid to his later novels. Of those critics who have chosen to consider his post-1870 fiction, the majority have dismissed it as so inferior to his early works as to be best passed over as quickly as possible. Some feel that, without Dickens to guide his pen, Collins was mcapable of writing anything worth reading; others suspect that the influence of Charles Reade was as detrimental to Collins's talent as Dickens's had been beneficial; yet more deCided that laudanum had fogged both his mind and his literary imagination. The purpose of this thesis is to refute these claims, and to establish that Collins's later works remain of great interest from both a literary and a social point of view. The thesis is divided into seven sections-an Apology, an Introduction, four chapters, and a conclusion. The Apology sets out to examine the modern hostility towards the novels written in the last two decades of his life, and to show how this frequently varies from contemporary opinion. As I do not ascribe to the theory that Collins's novels reveal a steady decline over the years, I have chosen not to adopt a chronological examination of his works, but rather a thematic one, which illustrates the consistency of his philosophy. The Introduction attempts to show that the difference between what is popularly called Collins's 'sensation' fiction and his 'thesis' novels is not so hard and fast as has often been maintained. It also introduces the ideas which will be developed throughout the thesis, namely that, by the sublation of many of the binary oppositions we have come to connect with Victorian literaturemasculine/ feminine, good/evil, hero/villain-Collins's works provide a reversed perspective on his society. Chapter 1, 'Good Girls', conSiders Heart and Science (1883), The Two Destinies (1876), and Man and Wife (1870). The second half of the nineteenth century was, for women, a time of upheaval; the Angel in the House had been superseded by her more dynamic and independent sister, whose inadequacy as a role-model was a frequent theme in much of the literature of the time. Whilst society was attempting to maintain the status quo by demanding that men be men and women subservient, these three novels stand out as defying-or, at least, ridiculing-convention on almost all gender-related levels. Chapter 2, 'Fallen Women', concentrates upon The Evil Genius (1886), The New Magdalen (1873), and The Fallen Leaves (1879). Collins was not the only author to deal with the subject of women who transgressed the moral code, but he was one of the few who had the courage to stand by his fallen women until the end. Rather than sentencing them to a penitential death, he allows them, reformed and unsullied by their previous degradation, to marry and reclaim their place in society. Moreover, he also shows that it is frequently those representatives of respectable society whose actions and attitudes are much more at fault than those of the women they choose to censure. Chapter 3, 'Wicked Creatures', is a long chapter which analyses '[ Say No' (1884), Blind Love (1890), The Legacy of Cain (1888), and Jezebel's Daughter (1880). Collins's deep-seated belief in the duality of human nature, which has already been suggested in the previous chapters, is here more fully explored. Just as his 'heroines' have been seen to defy their conventional roles, rising gracefully above the tribulations of pregnancy, prostitution, and persecution, so too do his villainesses flout the rules by which such wicked creatures should more properly be governed. His household devils are no more wholly demonic than his domestic angels are wholly sublime. Chapter 4, 'Other Men', discusses Poor Miss Finch (1872), The Black Robe (1881), and The Law and The Lady (1875). Not only were women expected by contemporary society to comply with an ideal, but men also found themselves being exhorted to conform to an active and dominant masculine archetype. The novels examined in this chapter shows the consequences of the failure to live up to these frequently impossible standards. Rather than adhere to the binary oppositions of selfless/selfish, wise/foolish, strong/weak, Collins presents his reader with composite figures who are, perhaps, truer to human nature than literature usually allows. The ConclUSion draws together the threads of the previous chapters. It also looks at Collins as a nineteenth-century writer with surprisingly modern ideas, and examines Collins's literary legacy, which is more usually to be found in the field of popular fiction.

Abstract:
Aims: This thesis aims to identify why John Walpole Willis, the first resident judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales for the district of Port Phillip (now Melbourne), was removed from office in 1843. Willis subsequently appealed to the Privy Council. In 1846 the Privy Council upheld the appeal on the grounds that he should have been given an opportunity to respond to the complaints. Yet in spite of this, Willis was removed from judicial office for good reason. How can Willis's amoval be reconciled with the success of his appeal? It is the argument of this thesis that Willis was removed not because he had done anything unlawful but that he had diminished public confidence in the system of government, including the administration of justice. As will become apparent in the following pages Willis never understood this basic fact. This was his tragedy and the reason why, despite of the success of his appeal, he was a judicial failure. Scope: The Privy Council made a legal decision regarding Willis's appeal. It considered what the legal outcome was to be of Willis's behaviour in Port Phillip during the period 1841-1843. In order to understand the decision, the events in Port Phillip that Willis identified in his appeal to the Privy Council are placed in context. This material that has been sourced from the Privy Council archives is about a common law judge seeking to justify his behaviour. In this manner the thesis addresses the question of what are society's expectations of the judiciary in a common law system. In the nineteenth century there was no contemporary literature about such expectations. It was only in the twentieth century that common law systems began to write down guidelines or provide a list of relevant ethical considerations for the judiciary. Although the process of removing a judge has changed, the story of Willis in Port Phillip during the period 1841-1843 still has currency today. In this way the thesis provides commentary on 'what the law is' with respect to judicial behaviour and 'how the law operates' when a common law judge misbehaves. Conclusion: The story of Willis in Port Phillip during the period 1841-1843 is a study of judicial failure. It is also a tragedy in that he was probably the last person to recognise the importance of the matters before the Privy Council as representing how a good common law judge should behave. Willis had to be dismissed because he failed to satisfy society's expectations as to how a judge should behave. In short, he diminished public confidence in the administration of justice, brought disrespect for the institution of the judiciary and did not protect the reputation of the judiciary or individual judicial officers. These matters are the very issues raised in Willis's appeal before the Privy Council. The stories of Willis's amoval and appeal are not only of historical interest. The issues raised continue to have resonance with respect to judicial authority today.

Abstract: Genetic syndromes such as Williams (WS), Fragile X (FXS) and Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) present general cognitive impairment ranging from mild to moderate. Despite sharing a diminishment of intelligence as a whole, strengths and weakness in specific cognitive abilities of each syndrome are well described in international literature, but not so emphatically in Brazil. This study aimed to investigate, describe and compare the cognitive profile of children and adolescents with WS, FXS and PWS. Thirty-four children and adolescents, aged between 6 and 16, of both genders, with a confirmed diagnosis of either WS (n = 10), FXS (n = 13) or PWS (n = 11), from the outpatient clinics of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or from the General Genetics II clinic, located at the Hospital das Clinicas (HC), participated in this study. The subjects cognitive functions were evaluated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III). Socio-cultural, cytogenetic tests and associated psychiatric symptoms and diagnoses were collected from the participants medical records and through interviews with those responsible for each child or adolescent. The Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ), Verbal IQ (VIQ), Performance IQ of (PIQ) and the standard scores of each subtest in the WISC-III scale, as well as the personal data of research subjects, were entered in version 17 of the SPSS statistical software for Windows. No significant differences were found between the three syndromes regarding age, social class or the type of school (private or public) each participant attends. On the other hand, there were significant differences in gender of the participants (p <0.05). Significant differences were found with respect to VIQ, and the verbal subtests Information, Vocabulary and Comprehension, and also in relation to the performance subtests Block Design and Object Assembly. The Dunn's multiple comparison test showed a significantly higher score on the verbal subtests and VIQ for the group with WS and a significantly higher score on the visuospatial subtests for the group with PWS. These results support the notion that there are specific cognitive profiles for these genetic syndromes, consisting of "peaks and valleys" in performance, despite the general intellectual deficit of these conditions, contrary to the g factor concept in children and adolescents with WS, FXS and PWS

Abstract:
Scattering from fluid domains with dissimilar material properties is of foundational importance to many application areas in acoustics and elastic wave propagation. For example, biomedical ultrasound and sonar both make use of acoustic field scattering for localization, imaging, and identification of objects. The theory of acoustic scattering from fluid and elastic materials is well established and has been validated with numerical and physical experiments. Recent work in acoustic and elastic meta-materials has shown that materials with subwavelength asymmetry have a macroscopic response characterized by a scalar bulk modulus, a tensorial mass density, and a vector that couples the pressure-strain relationship with the momentum density-particle velocity relationship. This type of constitutive behavior is the acoustic analogue of bianisotropy in electromagnetism and has come to be known as Willis coupling in acknowledgement of the first description of this material response by J.R. Willis [Willis, Wave Motion 3, pp. 111 (1981)]. We present a theoretical description of acoustic scattering of a plane wave incident upon a cylinder exhibiting weak Willis coupling using a perturbation approach. The scattered field depends upon the orientation of the Willis coupling vector and is therefore anisotropic despite the symmetry of the geometry. The analytical model is validated through comparison with a finite element-based numerical experiment where the bianisotropic material response is introduced using a weak formulation of the constitutive equations.

Abstract:
The Circle of Willis (CoW) is a ring like structure located at the base of brain, which is composed of a single anterior communicating artery (ACoA), paired anterior cerebral arteries (ACAs), paired internal carotid arteries (ICAs), paired posterior communicating arteries (PCoAs), paired posterior cerebral arteries (PCAs), paired vertebral arteries (VAs) and a single basilar artery (BA). It is the main cerebral blood perfusion pathway and provides an important collateral channel in patients with severe carotid or vertebral artery disease. Over 50% of stroke cases are related to the stenosis of arteries in the CoW, so the detailed information of the cerebral hemodynamics under different pathology situations is important for a variety of clinical applications. Numerous experimental studies have been performed on this field from different perspectives, include the mechanism of stenosis in the CoW [1], risk assessment of cerebral aneurysm [2] and the impact of pathological variations on the flow distribution [3]. However, none of these researches focus on the influence of ICA stenosis rates on cerebral perfusion and the specific collateral mechanism of the Circle of Willis under such situations. In this paper, an experimental study on cerebral blood perfusion and the collateral mechanism under a series of ICA stenosis rates was carried out.

Abstract:
Willis coupling, which couples the constitutive equations of an acoustical material, has been applied to acoustic metasurfaces with promising results. However, less is understood about Willis coupling in bulk media. In this paper a multiple-scales homogenization method is used to analyze the source and interpretation of Willis coupling in one-dimensional bulk media without any hidden degrees of freedom, or one-dimensional layered media. As expected from previous work, Willis coupling is shown to arise from geometric asymmetries, but is further shown to depend greatly on the measurement position. In addition, a discussion of the predicted material properties, including Willis coupling, of macroscopically inhomogeneous media is presented.

Full text
Abstract:
Transmission impedance tube measurements are necessary to measure the asymmetric acoustic property known as Willis coupling. However, software is required to measure and store data from an impedance tube for acoustic material characterization. This report details the overall structure of custom-developed software built from low-level functions. Software libraries from the data acquisition system as well as the HDF5 file system are the basis for the code. A command line user interface guides a user through the necessary steps in data collection.

Willis, Craig. Why Scottish and Welsh Speakers Will Miss European Structural Funds. European Centre for Minority Issues, August 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.53779/jkwo3330.

Full text
Abstract:
In this blog piece Craig Willis investigates the contribution of European Structural and Investment Funds projects in the period between 2007-2013 and 2014-2020, in order to ascertain direct and indirect links to the four Celtic languages, following the separation of cultural funds from the ESIF into Creative Europe and Erasmus Plus from 2007. He shows that, given that the speakers of such languages often reside in economically peripheral areas (at least in higher percentage terms), their livelihoods and everyday culture in the traditional speaking areas (even for non-speakers) are affected by availability of structural funds.
