Abstract:
This paper aims at analyzing Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman with a view to bring out its contemporary relevance. During its first performanace in 1949 the play shocked the American audience by its portrayal of the tragedy of the protagonist Willy Loman. The American audience were able to identify themselves with the protagonist and soon the tragedy of Willy Loman is empathised by the audience worldwide transcending spatio-temporal barriers. As put by June Schlueter, “He (Willy Loman) was a character who …encapsulated the spirit of the ordinary man whose work ethic, pride and self-deceptions did not admit defeat” (509). Willy commits suicide at the end of the play because of his inability to accept defeat. In fact, “Willy was the man everyone in the audience feared he would become, the man who unwittingly schooled us as a society on the need to accommodate our failures “ (509). Death of a Salesman will resonate with today’s audience because of its universal theme of an individual’s inability to realize his/her own dreams.

Abstract:
abstract This article features the writing of five high school seniors as they examine an unrecognized inspiration for Arthur Miller’s Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman. The young scholars argue that Katerina Ivanovna in Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment may have provided a literary model for the aging American salesman. The students cite biographical information to establish Miller’s reading of Crime and Punishment, and they analyze both texts to demonstrate that Katerina’s delusions of grandeur, her clinging to the past, her manipulation of her children, her jealousy and desperation may have burned a character type into Miller’s young mind.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on analyzing the drama script entitled Death of a Salesman as one of the representations of literary work in the modern period using the deconstructive approach. The purpose of this study is to figure out the hidden meaning about the American Dreams represented by Willy Loman. The method used in this paper is descriptive qualitative. This paper uses deconstructive approach from Jacques Derrida. The result of this research shows the belief of the American Dreams cannot be applied in the modern era to all of Americans. Most Americans hold a strong belief that everyone will get a happiness and a successful life in America. This deconstructive analysis finds a hidden meaning that the belief of the American Dreams could not guarantee the success of people who live in America. Abstract:
The character of Rose from Gypsy has been compared to tragic characters such as Medea, King Lear and Willy Loman. She has been credited as one of the most psychologically complex characters in musical theatre history and is a role coveted by performers. Equally appalling and compelling, Rose, like characters in ancient Greek tragedies, is an imperfect human struggling to do her best in difficult situations but is ultimately misguided and suffers a tragic reversal of fortune. This article applies dramatic theory from Aristotle’s Poetics and Arthur Miller’s article ‘Tragedy and the common man’ to discover the dramaturgical practices the authors of Gypsy used to structure Rose, a figure from musical comedy, within the theoretical constructs of a tragic heroine.

Abstract:
In less than 2 months, the artificial intelligence (AI) program ChatGPT has become a cultural sensation. It is freely accessible through a web portal created by the tool’s developer, OpenAI. The program—which automatically creates text based on written prompts—is so popular that it’s likely to be “at capacity right now” if you attempt to use it. When you do get through, ChatGPT provides endless entertainment. I asked it to rewrite the first scene of the classic American play Death of a Salesman , but to feature Princess Elsa from the animated movie Frozen as the main character instead of Willy Loman. The output was an amusing conversation in which Elsa—who has come home from a tough day of selling—is told by her son Happy, “Come on, Mom. You’re Elsa from Frozen . You have ice powers and you’re a queen. You’re unstoppable.” Mash-ups like this are certainly fun, but there are serious implications for generative AI programs like ChatGPT in science and academia.

Abstract:
The research aims to find the dysfunctional American Dreams; the causes of dysfunctional American Dreams and the effects of dysfunctional American Dreams experienced by the main character, Willy Lowman, as a representation of American society. This paper is examined by applying descriptive qualitative research paradigm which is naturally interpretative. Thus, the key instrument is the researcher herself who has the authority in managing and analyzing the data, and certainly producing meaning in the process of discussion and interpretations. Moreover, to facilitate her in collecting and identifying the data, she used supporting instrument in the form of table. This study, theoretically, applied the mimetic theory as the research approach. The researcher found that Arthur Miller uses the character of Willy Loman to represent the failure of the American Dream. Willy’s quest for the American Dream leads to his failure because throughout his life he pursues the illusion of the American Dream and not the reality of it. The unachievable part of Willy’s view of the American Dream is perfection. He has subordinated by the capitalism in which Willy belongs to the proletariat where his dream is a utopia.
 HIGHLIGHTS:
