Abstract:
ABSTRACTFavourite etymologies from the world of tennis. At the mere mention of summer most of us think only of one thing: Wimbledon. And at the mere mention of Wimbledon everybody thinks of tennis. A summer without a Wimbledon tennis tournament is just about as unthinkable as fish without chips, Romeo without Juliet or the telly without Coronation Street. For two weeks at the height of summer the nation will be gripped with tennis fever. Matches will be played and replayed on our screens day and night and every volley, fault or service analysed by pundits and experts who convince us they know what they are talking about. But where did this game that spellbinds us for a fortnight come from?

Abstract:
This article presents a case study of the developments in media gatekeeping in the last 10 years, focusing on the launch of the Tennis Channel and the ascendance of ESPN as the major network for professional tennis in the United States. The U.S. broadcast networks NBC and CBS have ceded the exclusive television rights for 2 of the Grand Slam tournaments (Wimbledon, U.S. Open) to ESPN for the first time in over 40 years. Meanwhile, the Tennis Channel, despite its independence from the media conglomerates, has carved out a niche for fans with its extensive global coverage of tournaments and for advertisers with its lucrative audience demographics. This change in dominance after the broadcast networks reigned for over 4 decades underscores the globalization of the sport and the abundance of early-round tournament matches available to fans. Organizational theories are used to analyze what has occurred and to predict what will happen next for tennis media gatekeeping in the United States.

Abstract:
Grand Slam tennis tournaments are played on different surfaces. The aims of the present study were to analyse the technical differences in the Grand Slam tournaments (Australian Open or AO, Roland Garros or RG, Wimbledon or W, and the United States Open or US), as well as to establish differences between winning and losing players. A total of 580 sets in 248 matches played in Grand Slams between 2017 and 2018 were analysed. To observe differences between the tournaments, a one-way analysis of variance (Kruskal Wallis) with the Bonferroni post-hoc test was performed. Univariate (Wilcoxon test) analysis of data was carried out to show the differences between the winning and losing performances of sets. Players who had more aces, points won on the 1st serve, winning shots and net points won more matches in the AO, W and US than in the RG (p<.05). However, in RG, players won more receiving points (43.56% of the points played) with chances to break the opponents’ service game. The results also showed that the winning players were superior in both service and receiving, and the most influential variables on the outcome of the match were percentage of receiving points won, break points won, and percentage of points won on the first serve. Such knowledge may have implications in the design of appropriate game strategies and specific training sessions to improve performance in professional women’s tennis.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of female player height on service related parameters. Statistics on service performance and height of female players were gathered from the second round onwards in all Grand Slam tournaments. Findings showed that the taller the player, the higher the serve average speed, serve maximum speed in, number of aces and number of points won with the first service (%), however, the number of double faults will increase as well. The Wimbledon surface (grass, fast court) favours taller players, who win a higher percentage of points with their first services here when compared to other surfaces. The findings of this study help to recognize the influence of height in female tennis in service related parameters, as well as the differences between the surfaces.

Abstract:
Abstract In tennis, the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open are the four most prestigious events (Grand Slams). These four Grand Slams differ in the composition of the court surfaces, when they are played in the year, and which city hosts the players. Individual Grand Slams come with different expectations, and it is often thought that some players achieve better results at some Grand Slams than others. It is also thought that differences in results may be attributed, at least partially, to surface type of the courts. For example, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Serena Williams have achieved their best results on clay, grass, and hard courts, respectively. This paper explores differences among Grand Slams, while adjusting for confounders such as tour, competitor strength, and player attributes. More specifically, we examine the effect of the Grand Slam on player performance for matches from 2013 to 2019. We take two approaches to modeling these data: (1) a mixed-effects model accounting for both player and tournament features and (2) models that emphasize individual performance. We identify differences across the Grand Slams at both the tournament and individual player level.

It’s been a while since Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was characterized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), causing major concerns and unfortunately panic in many countries. The on-going outbreak is of international concern and most countries have already announced a series of protective measures to confront this health threat of unknown magnitude. Travel warnings, scientific congress suspensions, cancellations of national holidays and closing of schools, amusement parks, cinemas, theatres and gyms are only some of these measures. The impact in sports is also tremendous. Major sport events like the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and Euro 2020 have been postponed. Others like the Miami Open and the Wimbledon tennis tournament have been cancelled and there is an ongoing discussion for forthcoming events. However, few have been said regarding the impact of limiting public exercise.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper examines the performance of five different measures for forecasting men’s and women’s professional tennis matches. We use data derived from every match played at the 2018 and 2019 Wimbledon tennis championships, the 2019 French Open, the 2019 US Open, and the 2020 Australian Open. We look at the betting odds, the official tennis rankings, the standard Elo ratings, surface-specific Elo ratings, and weighted composites of these ratings, including and excluding the betting odds. The performance indicators used are prediction accuracy, calibration, model discrimination, Brier score, and expected return. We find that the betting odds perform relatively well across these tournaments, while standard Elo (especially for women’s tennis) and surface-adjusted Elo (especially for men’s tennis) also perform well on a range of indicators. For all but the hard-court surfaces, a forecasting model which incorporates the betting odds tends also to perform well on some indicators. We find that the official ranking system proved to be a relatively poor measure of likely performance compared to betting odds and Elo-related methods. Our results add weight to the case for a wider use of Elo-based approaches within sports forecasting, as well as arguably within the player rankings methodologies.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to show the differences in the game statistics related to the service in professional and junior category in three surfaces and to determine statistical differences during the game regarding both categories. A total of 269 individual Grand Slam tennis matches (Australian Open, Wimbledon and Roland Garros) were selected on three different surfaces (hard court, grass and clay). The data was collected from the official websites of the tournaments. A total of 10 variables were analyzed in professional category and 7 in junior. Absolute players obtained higher values (p <0.05) of aces, aces per set, percentage of 1st Services and points won with 1st and 2nd Service and committed fewer double faults per set than juniors in all surfaces. It is concluded that the increase in performance in the variables related to the service plays a decisive role in order to achieve a professional status.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if gender inequalities existed during SportsCenter's™ highlight coverage of the 2007 Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. The morning episode of the Entertainment Sports Programming Network (ESPN) television show SportsCenter™ was videotaped daily during the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. Variables analyzed included total highlight time and average time per highlight, total number of highlights, highlights in the introduction to SportsCenter™, highlights previewed preceding commercial, when each highlight occurred, and name gender marking. Statistical significances were seen in first name only (t=2.76, p=0.05) and last name only (t=1.81, p=0.04) name gender marking and highlights occurring in second third (t=2.48, p=0.01) of SportsCenter™. Current literature supports current study's results in that male participants received quantitatively greater highlight coverage, more highlights in the second third of SportsCenter™, and were referred to by their last name while female participants were referred to by their first name.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlations and differences between various rounds of tennis Techniques in 2012 Wimbledon. Methods: According to contest data of 2012 Wimbledon Open man’s singles events, the pearson correlation was used to analyze the technical correlation coefficient between all the variables. Results: Correlation coefficient by tennis technology comparison, displays the 1st serve points won with Aces in The 1.2.3.4 round correlated, net points won with the 1st serve points won in the 1.2.3.4.5 rounds correlated. Technical differences that by winning and tennis, receiving points in the 1.2.3.4.5 rounds the outcome significantly, 1st serve points won in a 1.2.3.5 round of significant difference in outcome. Conclusions: 1. the first serve winning percentage in the 1.2.3.5 round showed significant differences, but the two important pointers -- receiving points and the Fastest serve exhibited no remarkable difference, which showed that the level of service among the players are similar. It was demonstrated that although the service was an important technique on the grass courts of Wimbledon, in addition to moving fast, other techniques were also very crucial to the win. 2. The receiving points in the 1.2.3.4.5 had significant differences, and the net points won and receiving points in the 1.2.4.6 rounds also had significant differences, showing that, in the matach, the receiving points mostly came from the ball after the ball with net points.

Abstract:
The events industry was estimated at $1,100 billion in 2018 and was expected to grow to reach $2,330 billion by 2026 (Allied Market Research, n.d.). Year 2020, however, turned out to be perhaps the most transformative year in the industry in the last decades. Numerous events, from smaller family occasions, like weddings, to major events of the likes of the Wimbledon tennis tournament, the UEFA EURO 2020, Glastonbury Festival and the Cannes Film festival, had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The combined economic impact is not yet known but will be a loss in the hundreds of billions of US dollars (Gössling, Scott, & Hall, 2021). This shows the vulnerability of the events industry to major crises. Despite the negative impacts of crises on events, there is a paucity of research that explores organizational responses under unusual, unprecedented or critical circumstances in the events sector. This chapter applies the concept of agility in event organization within volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous, so-called VUCA, environment (Bennett & Lemoine, 2014) that dominated year 2020 due to the unfolding pandemic. The agile approach is often seen as a stream of new ideas leading to elegantly simple solutions. It requires a high energy level of the team involved due to the tight constraints and deadlines. The authors introduce a case study of a business festival organized in Turku (Finland) and discuss the decision-making process, stakeholder involvement, introduction of a new modus operandi, and the new event format that was chosen.
