Abstract:
While Porter and Kramer’s Creating Shared Value (CSV) works well as a management framework to address “win-win” business and society issues, it leaves managers ill-equipped to legitimately manage issues where they face the prospect of “win-lose” or “lose-win” social engagements. For legitimacy, managers need to bolster CSV with ethical frameworks—specifically, norm-taking and norm-making frameworks. Managers can be better positioned to create shared value through CSV+, a multi-part framework built around CSV and augmented by ethical frameworks.

Abstract:
The classic notion of a win–win situation has a key flaw in that it cannot always offer the parties equal amounts of winningsbecause each party believes they are winners. In reality, one party may win more than the other. This strategy is not limited to a single product or negotiation; it may be applied to a variety of situations in life. We present a novel way to measure the win–win situation in this paper. The proposed method employs fuzzy logic to create a mathematical model that aids negotiators in quantifying their winning percentages. The model is put to the test on real-life negotiation scenarios such as the Iraqi–Jordanian oil deal and iron ore negotiation (2005–2009), in addition to scenarios from the game of chess. The presented model has proven to be a useful tool in practice and can be easily generalized to be utilized in other domains as well.

Abstract:
This study examines the Allied notion of victory and how it was expressed in the depth of Allied strategic planning in 1918 for a campaign in 1919. Using the Supreme War Council (SWC) as a lens this study's arguments are threefold. The first is that, with the creation of the SWC, the Allies pursued a notion of victory that was focused on a decisive military defeat of the German army. Their timeline to victory over the enemy was affected by their perception of the enemy’s strength, their assessment of the difficulties inherent in overcoming the military advantage offered by the Central Powers' interior lines, their appraisal of the European members' morale to continue the war, and their ability to gather the necessary superiority in material and manpower resources. The second argument is that, through the SWC, the Allies were able to successfully coordinate strategy and resources. This study analyses the workings of the SWC as an international body and an early example of modern alliance warfare, comparing the perspectives of the British, French, American and Italian representatives in their willingness and unwillingness to coordinate national needs with alliance ones, arguing that the coalition did form a unified policy and strategy for the campaign in 1919. The abrupt ending of the war has obscured historians' understanding of coalition warfare in the First World War, as they have not sufficiently considered the serious planning that took place for 1919. Third, it argues that at the SWC level, the coalition members recognized the interdependent nature of the theatres, and thus the importance of all them for the conduct of the war.

Abstract:
This thesis examines a transition moment in the US government’s foreign policymaking from 1951-1953, when the Executive turned to psychology to improve its Cold War campaign against the USSR. Using the Psychological Strategy Board (PSB) as a case study, which only operated from July 1951 to September 1953, the thesis examines the variety of ways the Board’s staff applied psychology to coordinate and systematise the US government’s foreign policymaking and psychological operations. I pay particular attention to the way PSB staff engaged with experts, and used the expertise given to them by behavioural specialists. By looking at the practice of policymaking in the PSB, I uncover the ways in which psychology was brought into US government thinking in the early days of the Cold War. Psychology became central to US strategic thinking in the Cold War. It had an incredible allure for policymakers. Yet PSB staff struggled to define a psychological strategy and used it as a catch-all term to describe many facets of US foreign policy and diplomacy. The Board’s elastic conception of psychology led to its staff being unable to improve America’s psychological warfare campaign. It failed to quantify and coordinate America’s psychological operations. Psychology was thus presumed rather than proven to be of assistance to foreign-policymakers. At the same time, the Board’s flexible use of the term psychology gave superficial coherence to the US government’s haphazard Cold War campaign and justified its use of interventionist policies as beneficial to the mental wellbeing of foreign peoples. This, rather than evidence psychology worked, drove policymakers’ faith in it. Looking at the history of the PSB, then, complicates historians’ understanding of the ways in which psychology and psychological experts assumed cultural and political authority in Cold War America.

Abstract:
碩士
大葉大學
國際企業管理學系碩士班
103
Disputes between capital and labor have increased at a rapid pace in recent years and the issue has become an important managerial issue facing enterprises. Measures taken by either the capital (e.g. lay-off, pay-cut or unpaid leaves) or the labor (e.g. lawsuits, job-change or protests) may be detrimental to both parties. The purpose of this research is to investigate how enterprises cope with disputes that result from different or incompatible stances respectively taken by the capital and labor sides. More specifically, to examine the case of the implementation of unpaid leave policies since 2008, and the lack of long-term and comprehensive conflict resolution between employers and employees. This study will analyze business operations with respect to the business strategy adopted during the crisis and propose mitigating solutions to disputes between employers and employees that produce win-win results.

Abstract:
碩士
國立高雄師範大學
人力與知識管理研究所
107
Under the fast development of technology, the dependence of the economy on the Internet has gradually increased, network platform is considered to be one of the most indispensable competitive factors. After entering the era of big data, the Internet platform is also seen as a unique source of unique business transactions, where the hidden business value will enable people to bring faster and more convenient online trading transactions. Therefore, the combination of case companies and the concept of network economy has become an inevitable trend in the future. In this study, FruitPay and network-related applications are used as the main axis of research. First, use the literature to explore relevant content, and use the interview method in qualitative research to conduct interviews with the founders of the case companies that implement online shopping subscription-type fruit boxes. Object, to understand the actual implementation of the case company in the organization. The study concluded that the case companies were mainly ordered through the official website. However, the case company gradually developed unmanned stores, set up unmanned storefronts under the community building, and slowly moved toward physical access, making people who want to eat safety and non-toxic fruits more selective. In addition, after the development of the automated subscription fruit box, the case company increased the efficiency of production and sales, increased the value of agricultural products, and subverted the traditional fruit sales model. At the end of the study, there were some restrictions in the research process that led to the lack of perfection of the study, and therefore future recommendations.

Li, Yan-Pu, and 李彥蒲. "Study on the effects of offshore wind power on fishery and win-win strategy in Taiwan." Thesis, 2013. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/9p3596.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士
國立臺灣海洋大學
環境生物與漁業科學學系
102
Abstract The present study adopts documentary analysis and comparative analysis to investigate the effects of developing offshore wind power on marine ecology and fishery as well as potential problems of fishery compensation. Feasible win-win coexisting strategies are also examined in this study. The results will be reference for Taiwan to successfully develop offshore wind power in the future. The results are summarized as follows: a. In response to the goal of carbon reduction of Kyoto Protocol which went into effect in 2005, countries around the world have been trying to actively develop renewable energy in recent years. In particular, offshore wind power is the most potential marine renewable energy which are vigorously promoting by the whole world because of low cost and more mature technical system. b. Taiwan is equipped with the advantages of developing offshore wind power. Only when Taiwan follows the global trend of sustainable low-carbon generation could it rapidly increase energy self-sufficiency. Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) decides to actively develop offshore wind industry. MOEA plans to erect 600 offshore wind turbines before 2030 which total project capacity could reach 3,000MW. c. Local fishermen have gained a permit delivered by the fishery agency to work on fishing ground. The overlapping areas of offshore wind grounds and fishing grounds might cause the problem of fishery compensation. Therefore, it should be coped with first. d. The effects of offshore wind farm on marine ecology and fishery mainly occur in the period of construction and decommissioning. The effects of its noise, vibration, electromagnetic fields, piling and the movement of construction and decommissioning on marine organisms are not huge. Furthermore, after the offshore wind ground is constructed, it will have the positive function of habitat compensation because of fish aggregating effect of artificial reef. This effect will attract a large number of mussels, benthos, fishes and even marine mammals to inhabit in the offshore wind farm. e. The construction of offshore wind ground could be a turning point of fishery transformation. The construction of offshore wind ground could be co-constructed with artificial reefs and aquaculture facilities in the future. In addition, some marine areas could remain open for leisure activities of fishing in order for the win-win purposes of multifunctional marine areas. f. Inside the exclusive fishing right area, the Criterion of Compensation to Fishery Right promulgated by the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan in 2003 could be used to calculate of compensation. On the other hand, outside the exclusive fishing right area, reasonable compensation still should be made based on legitimate expectation. This study suggests that this part should be calculated by using net present value method based on financial theories.

Abstract:
Abstract Corrosion is one of the leading maintenance costs across the United States Surface Navy, with approximately 25 cents of every dollar spent on maintenance going towards fighting or correcting corrosion. In addition to the huge financial burden, corrosion can limit the ability of our Navy’s ships to meet operational commitments and even prevent them from achieving their expected service life (ESL). In February of 2011, Surface Team One (ST1) stood up the Corrosion Control Knowledge Sharing Network (KSN) in order to streamline the efforts to fight and win the war against corrosion. The Corrosion KSN formed a strong and diverse team comprised of members from the operator, maintenance execution, maintenance planning, engineering, research and development and program management organizations. Together, the team set out to “single up” the efforts to evaluate and mitigate the corrosion issues facing the Fleet. In the short time since its creation, the Corrosion KSN has been fighting the war on corrosion from multiple fronts, and has already made considerable progress. The Corrosion KSN is helping fit corrosion improvements into availability work packages in order to impact the Fleet’s corrosion problems now. The KSN has helped implement improved coatings like polysiloxane (MIL-PRF-24635 type V, class 2, grade B) into the Surface Fleet. The KSN is also initiating efforts now that will have long term impacts to help improve the Surface Navy’s corrosion control capabilities while interfacing with ship’s force to bring corrosion awareness back to the sailors. Additionally, the KSN is injecting corrosion avoidance early on in the life of Surface Ships to ensure today’s ships can reach their ESL and become a part of tomorrow’s Navy. The Corrosion KSN has created a Program Management Plan to help align the efforts of its various members and to ensure a common, systematic approach is being used. This plan will aid in maximizing the KSN’s efforts regarding the Navy’s corrosion problems by helping the members determine the strategic and tactical plans for the KSN. The primary elements of this program plan are as follows: policy, acquisition process improvements, strategic communications, technology transition to expedite corrosion mitigation materials and practices, corrosion control planning and execution for assessments and availabilities, and training. The Corrosion Control KSN is progressing on several fronts with the ultimate goal of helping the US Navy win the war on corrosion.

Murguia, Juan M., Pablo Ordoñez, Leonardo Corral, and Gilmar Navarrete-Chacón. Payment for Ecosystem Services in Costa Rica: Evaluation of a Country-wide Program. Inter-American Development Bank, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0004259.

Full text
Abstract:
Several countries have implemented payment-for-ecosystem-services (PES) programs, buoyed by the promise of these programs as a win-win strategy that would allow both the conservation of natural resources, and the reduction of poverty for rural households and communities. Our study evaluates the effect on deforestation of Costa Rica's PES program, one of the oldest country-wide programs in the world. Costa Rica approved the 1996 Forest Law (Law No. 7575), creating a PES program that compensates landowners for forest conservation. We estimate these effects using an event study design with staggered entry into treatment. Our results show a statistically significant effect for the first year with a decrease in deforestation of 0.21 ha, but not for the following years. Given that the baseline level of deforestation in our sample is low, the magnitude of the effect is large. When compared to the pre-2016 average level of within farm deforestation, our estimated effect would imply a 100% reduction in deforestation for the first year after enrollment. Given the program pays the participants for a 5-year period, and that the effect is significant only during the first year, it may be beneficial for the program to reduce its length and implement required simplified annual contract renewals or other behavioral interventions to reduce noncompliance in subsequent years.

Auers, Daunis. Populism and the 2024 European Parliament Election in Latvia. European Center for Populism Studies (ECPS), 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.55271/rp0076.

Full text
Abstract:
Populism has been a feature of Latvia’s political landscape since the 1990s. New insurgent parties have utilized increasingly anti-establishment rhetoric, often through intensive and innovative use of social media, to win seats in the Latvian parliament and even join government coalitions. However, European Parliament elections in Latvia have been comparatively free of populism. There are two main reasons for this. First, and most importantly, there is a broad pro-European consensus in Latvia. Membership in the European Union and NATO is central to all three Baltic nations’ security strategy in light of growing threats from Russia. As a result, there is no serious Eurosceptic party in Latvia and no explicitly Eurosceptic politicians have ever been elected to the European Parliament from Latvia. Second, Latvia’s voters tend to support serious, experienced politicians in European elections, believing that they are better placed to support Latvia’s national interests in the European system. Party politics take second place in campaigning, with the focus being on the experience of candidates (after all, Latvia elected just nine MEPs in 2024) rather than policy differences. As a result, populist anti-elite rhetoric has less salience. This chapter will explore the extent to which the 2024 European Parliament election in Latvia has continued these trends. Keywords: Latvia; populism; European Parliament; Russia–Ukraine War; election campaign

Hughes, Ceri, Miguel Martinez Lucio, Stephen Mustchin, and Miriam Tenquist. Understanding whether local employment charters could support fairer employment practices: Research Briefing Note. University of Manchester Work and Equalities Institute, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.3927/uom.5176698.

Full text
Abstract:
Employment charters are voluntary initiatives that attempt to describe ‘good’ employment practices and to engage and recognise those employers that meet or aspire to meet these practices. They can operate at different spatial scales, ranging from international and national accreditation schemes to local charters that focus on engaging employers in specific regions or cities. The latter are the focus of this briefing paper. At least six city-regions in England had local employment charters at the time of our research. These areas alone account for over a fifth (21 per cent) of the resident working-age population (based on ONS 2022 population estimates), highlighting the potential reach and significance of these voluntary initiatives in terms of setting employment standards, although the number of employers directly accredited with local schemes is still relatively small. Despite their popularity with policymakers, there is only limited research on local employment charters. A few studies have explored issues relating to the design, implementation and evaluation of charters, reflecting demand from policymakers for toolkits and support to develop local policy initiatives (e.g. Crozier, 2022). But several years into the implementation of some of these charter initiatives, and as more areas look to develop their own, we argue that it is time to revisit some more foundational questions around what local charters are for, and how far they can support ‘good work’ agendas. It remains to be seen which employers can and will engage substantively with these initiatives, how employer commitments might be validated and the good employment criteria enforced, and how local charters will be integrated with local authority commissioning and procurement practices (TUC, 2022). The local charters that have emerged so far within the UK have been conceived predominantly as employer engagement tools, adopting language and approaches designed to appeal to employer interests and priorities and emphasising the value that employers can derive from being part of the initiative. This contrasts with approaches emphasising the engagement of other constituents, like citizens and employees, as a route to influencing employer engagement (Scott, Baylor and Spaulding, 2016; Johnson, Herman and Hughes, 2022). This briefing paper shares findings from a scoping study involving key informants in the North West of England (2022-2023) which explored how local charter initiatives could influence employers to improve their employment practices. Participants in the study shared their views on: 1) How voluntary local employment charters could influence employers to change their employment practices? 2) What types of employers local charters could engage and influence? Alongside this study, we have also developed a series of case studies of the charters that have been introduced across six city regions in England. These encompass the Fair Work Standard (London); Good Employment Charter (West of England); Good Work Pledge (North of Tyne Combined Authority); Fair Employment Charter (Liverpool City Region Combined Authority); Good Employment Charter (Greater Manchester) and the Fair Work Charter (West Yorkshire Combined Authority). The case studies are published separately. Our conversations with policymakers, union representatives and campaigners indicate that while there are some potential ‘win-win’ outcomes from promoting good employment practices, there are also some key tensions that should be more clearly acknowledged. In particular, one point of divergence relates to what would be the most effective and meaningful way to engage with employers in order to secure improvements in employment practices. On the one hand, employment charter initiatives could set consistent, clear and relatively high standards of practice that employers could be required to meet from the outset, creating a clear dividing line between those employers who were engaged in some way with the initiative and those who are not. On the other, these initiatives could prioritise engaging as many employers as possible with few or no specific red lines (e.g. around paying the living wage) so that the charter provides an opportunity to work with employers to secure hopefully more substantive commitments down the road. There are challenges and trade-offs associated with both of these viewpoints. One problem with the former strategy of setting a consistent standard is that the principles of employment that the charter promotes may not be particularly stretching in some sectors, or indeed may only describe a minimum set of commitments for certain types of work; whilst in other sectors they may be viewed as being too stringent. A more incremental, flexible strategy of engaging with employers and working with them to change their employment practices, in contrast, relies on sustained commitment from both policymakers and employers. Whether charters can simultaneously offer a ‘safe space’ to employers to share information and change their practices whilst also operating in a more regulatory way appears as a fundamental tension in existing visions for these initiatives. We return to these different views on how to engage employers and secure change in the conclusion to this paper.
