Abstract:

Abstract:
Our study is focused on how the public sector can collaborate with the private sector on a certain issue. The public sector wanted to create a project to increase bicycling in the municipality of Kalmar. Our problem was to develop a sustainable way to collaborate between the two parties. We managed to present a suggestion on how the public sector with communication could improve their Public Relations with the private sector and therefore letting the parties benefit from their differences, thus making it possible to release synergy.Using semi-structured interviews and a workshop, we could clarify the values and attitudes of the parties to bring forth the core values to develop a shared vision. Where the identified differences were found, we used a dialog strategy based on intercultural conflict management as a communication tool. The result was exemplified with things that were expressed in the interviews, and we presented a framework on how to think when choosing the right type of collaboration model for the specified activity.

Abstract:
Abstract   Title: Coaching Leadership - A win-win situation?   Level: Final assignment for Master Degree in Business Administration   Author: Helena Gustafsson   Supervisor: Pär Vilhelmson   Date: 2012 – mars   Aim: The purpose of this study is to examine how companies use the coaching leadership and how the employees perceive to have a manager who uses this way to lead.   Method: The study was conducted as a qualitative study in which interviews was an important feature. The information I gathered is the basis for analysis and final discussion. The material has been collected through personal interviews with two managers and then I send questions to the employees by e-mail that they responded. This is to get such an interesting empirical data as possible. With this qualitative approach, I got a deeper understanding of how managers and employees perceive it to work with the so-called Coaching leadership.   Result &amp; Conclusions:  Coaching leadership is theorized to be motivating for employees than the traditional because it is based on a person in charge should have the role of helping the employees to strengthen and develop the staff. In order that the employees increase the performance of companies. This is consistent with respondents´ views in relation to the coaching style of leadership advantages. The study has shown that both companies are well aware that that communication and information are key ingredients to get their employees involved so they feel involved in what goes on in the company. Employees will be more motivated to take responsibility and solve any problem that may arise. In this way, believe the two respondents in the leading position that the results are better for business. Respondents use a coaching style of leadership which is consistent with the theory. Coaching leadership is here to stay.   Suggestions for future research: This study has shown that there is reasoning among managers and scientist around the firms improves the results using the Coaching Leadership. This is something that I think we should continue research on and produce measurable results on whether it really is so that companies using a coaching style of leadership among their managers can get better results. The two companies that I have examined so both managers are convinced of the improved results, but they can not reveal any figures on this, which I think would be interesting to see.   Contribution of the thesis: The studies contribution is to clarify how the company can have the help of the coaching leadership when they work with their staff. The study shows that with a coaching style of leadership the companies get their employees more involved, solution-oriented and that they take grater responsibility for their work. There are also those who believe that it improves the results for companies as the use of coaching   Key words: Coaching, leader, manager, coaching leadership, coach, traditional leadership<br>Sammanfattning   Titel: Det coachande ledarskapet - En win-win situation? Nyckelord: Coaching, ledare, chef, coachande ledarskap, coach, traditionellt ledarskap

Byström, Grein Robin, and Simon Hedin. "Win-win-win?

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The transport sector is one of the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. A current solution to this problem is the introduction of electric vehicles into our transport fleets. However, this solution comes with its challenges; for instance, the environmental impact of batteries once they reach their end-of-life. The circular economy is an approach to manage ecological electromobility issues while providing economic and societal wellbeing. A starting point for the implementation of a circular economy can be found in the implementation of circular business models. Because the circular economy requires its actors to think in systems, the collaboration between multiple stakeholders is essential. However, most circular business model frameworks are focusing on the focal firm, which is not sufficient to encourage cross-collaboration between organizations. Therefore, this study outlines the development of a new framework that focuses on a multi-stakeholder perspective. I propose the “framework for multi-stakeholder circular business model innovation” to explore win-win-win scenarios for the management of 2LB. I conducted a study in collaboration with Svealandstrafiken, Mälarenergi and Västerås Stad. The organizations were involved in data collection via a series of interviews and the validation of the framework through a workshop. The proposed framework consists of a process of four phases subdivided into eight steps that meant to address key challenges organizations are facing to achieve circularity. Within these four phases, the framework encourages discussions on shared values and visions between all stakeholders at an early stage. As a consequence, better collaborations and relationships are formed, which positively benefits the development of circular business models.

Abstract:
The call for business practices that create benefits for companies, customers, and society is getting louder. This article analyzes a new implementation of such a win–win–win approach: the carrotmob. Activists and managers jointly organize a shopping flashmob in which consumers collectively purchase the products of a target company to reward its intent to act more socially responsible. Given that carrotmobs are only efficient if they are supported by a critical mass of consumers, a survey study of 337 young consumers explores the critical drivers of carrotmob participation. Accordingly, object-oriented, personal, and social motives jointly determine carrotmob participation with social motives having the strongest impact.

Research shows that seeking mutual benefit is not only desirable - it works. In fact, the win-win approach produces better results than a win-lose negotiating style. In a series of experiments, Robert Axelrod presented subjects with a bargaining situation called “prisoner`s dilemma” in which they could choose either to cooperate or betray a confederate. There are three types of outcome in prisoner`s dilemma: One partner can win big by betraying a confederate, both can win by cooperating, or both can lose by betraying one another. Abstract:
Educational Administration<br>Ed.D.<br>While society has begun its evolution from the industrial age to the information age, most teacher unions continue to pattern their behavior after the industrial model of unionism focusing almost exclusively on salary, benefits and working conditions. In some school systems, though, teacher unions and management are questioning the legitimacy of their adversarial relationships. They are beginning to abandon the belief in the separation of traditional labor and management roles, and replacing it with a collective operational model that offers promise for significant educational reform and improved employer-employee relations. This expanded scope of union activity is attempting to include non-traditional issues, such as teacher professional development, teacher quality, instructional delivery, student achievement standards and educational reform, as well as mechanisms that are highly flexible and reactive to immediate need (Koppich, 2005; Urbanski, 1998). The purpose of this case study was to uncover the events that led to formation of collaborative structures at each of the study sites, gain insight in the collaborative activity that is occurring, better understand the impact of collaboration on the collective bargaining process, and attempt to understand the various challenges to collaboration at each study site. Data collection for this case study relied heavily on intensive personal interviews. Study participants were selected from school systems that have strong collaborative relations between the district administration and the teachers' union. Care was given in the selection of diverse school systems and in different regions of the country. Contractual language from the negotiated agreement also provided additional supporting data. The convergence of this data resulted in a greater understanding on the formation and maintenance of collaborative structures. The results of this study exposed that there are, in fact, strong models of collaboration between labor representative groups and management. The work that is occurring in these school districts is significantly transforming labor relations and impacting student educational experience. Leaders for both management and labor have largely abandoned their traditional roles and relinquished power in favor of working more cooperatively for the betterment of all within the organization. At each site, many collaborative byproducts have emerged to address a plethora of identified needs and goals. The collaborative relationship has also impacted the collective bargaining process, as the parties attempt to more creatively address all issues that either party raises as a concern. Greater respect for the role of unions and management has also emerged, as participants began to realize that they shared more in common than previously thought. The participants in school systems with strong collaborative relations have also demonstrated that they are anxious to share their knowledge and experience with others, as evidence by their participation in informal networks like Teacher Union Reform Network (TURN), as well as with researchers interested in collaboration between labor and management.<br>Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
<p>It is becoming increasingly difficult, although very important, for companies to reach out to its customers and differentiate themselves in the market place. The main reason is that the competition is extremely intensified and customers can quite easily switch between suppliers. Focusing on relations is a way for companies to overcome some obstacles of competition that is evident in today’s market place. One way for companies to reach its customers, strengthen the relation, and meet them face-to-face is to create events. How-ever, finding the target group and motivating individuals to attend events is an important issue for the companies arranging events. There has to be a match between what the company arranging the event want to communicate and what the invited individual expects to gain out of attending the event. It is further important to direct the event towards certain individuals and also to make sure that the invited people actually attend the event.</p><p>The purpose of the thesis is to explore how companies can arrange meaningful events to a targeted audience and examine what factors motivates the individuals to actually attend these events.</p><p>An inductive approach is mainly used since it allows for flexible structure where empirical data is collected and before applying appropriate theoretical framework. The authors have further chose to collect data in a qualitative manner as this allows for open ended inter-views which can generate in deeper understanding of the reasons for individuals to attend corporate events. The primary data was based on interviews related to four corporate events previously taking place.</p><p>The authors found that there are numerous reasons for creating corporate events mainly because events are a platform that naturally integrates many marketing activities. When targeting individuals a personal contact can increase the likelihood that the invited people will attend an event. The reason is that through direct communication a person has the opportunity to tailor the invitation by explaining the reasons for why this particular person should find the event important and interesting to attend. Corporate events should offer valuable information for the attendees otherwise there is risk that invited individuals will not attend an event. Individuals attend events for the purpose of interacting with representatives from the arranging company as well as people from other attending companies. It can be concluded that a corporate event should be work related in some how and include new information and/or offer networking possibilities.</p><br><p>Det blir allt svårare, men ständigt mer viktigt, för företag att nå ut till sina kunder och differentiera sig på marknaden.

Clare, Abigail Jane. "Economic and environmental potential of biochar : a "win-win" solution for China's straw?" Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/15795.

Full text
Abstract:
Biochar has often been described as a "win-win" technology for soil fertility, agronomic yields, carbon sequestration and poverty reduction. However, despite a growing body of physical research evidence to support these claims, there is much less socio-economic evidence for biochar's potential to achieve these "winwin" outcomes in real-world systems. Consequently, debates about biochar and its potential to contribute to sustainable development have often been polarised between extremes of opinion, with some claiming it is a key technology for mitigating climate change, and others warning of potentially dire effects for ecosystems and vulnerable populations. This inspired the objective for this PhD, which is to generate research that can inform and moderate the debate on biochar's win-win potential. Guided by the theory of ecological modernisation, this PhD aimed to generate a body of applied, policy-relevant research on the economic and environmental potential of biochar as a win-win use of biomass resources. It was important to adopt geographical and biomass boundaries for the research to provide a meaningful and focused contribution, therefore the research is focused on China and its agricultural straw residues. One of the central claims for biochar is that it can improve crop yields and, consequently, reduce poverty for smallholder farmers. This thesis investigated this from a socio-economic perspective using farm-scale linear programming models with primary data from interviews conducted across four contrasting Chinese agricultural systems. The results suggest that biochar is unlikely to provide even minor economic gains, let alone poverty-reducing change, to smallholder farmers in these systems. If biochar is not economic for farmers, there is a possibility that economies of scale made possible by business ventures could reduce the marginal costs per unit of biochar product and/or that governments/climate finance institutions may be interested in subsidising this technology where it has significant carbon mitigation impacts. Thus the next research question was whether biochar might be a profitable investment for businesses in China, and further whether businesses might also profit from carbon credits/subsidies where biochar's carbon sequestration potential is valued either by carbon markets or by climate conscious governments willing to provide appropriate incentives. Life-cycle and cost-benefit analyses demonstrated that, when compared to the main competing uses for straw feedstocks (briquetting for combustion in boilers, and gasification for electricity generation), pyrolysis of straw to produce biochar makes a financial loss under all subsidy scenarios considered, and is the least cost-effective technology for carbon sequestration. Overall it seems biochar made from China's straw feedstocks is not currently a win-win option for smallholder farmers, business investors or national/international climate mitigation strategies. In light of the relative dominance of bioenergy over biochar production as a financial and climate mitigating option for China's straw, the focus of the thesis shifts to explore win-win scenarios in this domain. Here the results are more promising. Combining a unique geographical dataset of China's coal fired powerstations and straw location with data on energy economics, the model suggests a small tweak to China's bioenergy subsidy system (an extension of the existing feed-in-tariff to include low energy replacement ratio cofiring) could contribute 42-62% of China's 2020 target to install 30GW of renewable energy generation capacity: a classic win-win scenario for the Chinese government's bioenergy targets, bioenergy investors and global climate change. Overall this thesis offers two main findings to the literature. Firstly it demonstrates that, within its current high application rate model, biochar will struggle to compete as a win-win strategy when viewed through financial and carbon sequestration lenses. However, secondly, it suggests that win-win strategies are available for China's straw resources under cofiring bioenergy applications. The thesis concludes with a critical discussion of these results in relation to the theory of ecological modernisation and the concept of win-wins.

Abstract:
This study aims to bring clarity to a discussion of whether the Chinese relationship with Africa can be regarded as an act of Neo-colonialism or if it contains Neo-colonial elements. As China has increasingly engaged with the continent giving extensive amounts of foreign aid and loans as well as intensifying their trade relations, the question arises whether or not this can be connected to Neo-colonial dynamics. This study will use a newly constructed framework with the help of the Neo-colonial theory, different definitions by scholars will be used to create the framework, and the basis for this analysis. The research approach is a qualitative design and the research design is a case study with a focus on China's engagement in Africa. This study finds that there are Neo-colonial elements in the processes of engagement exercised by China on the African continent in some of the variables used in the constructed theoretical framework. Lastly, this study argues that African states must be increasingly cautious when exporting raw materials and in letting private Chinese companies invest and buy shares in important African domestic sectors.

Abstract:
Urban Education<br>Ph.D.<br>Given the tormented history of development projects around the globe and the fact that global service learning and engineering-for-development often engages students in development interventions, it is critically important to explore the impact of global service learning projects and partnerships not only on student learning, which has received ample attention, but also on the international host communities. Although there is increasing research on student outcomes of participation in service-learning, there is a lack of research focusing on the outcomes related to the community where the service takes place. Research focused on the impact on communities should include the wide range of perspectives that compose the community- participants, organization leaders, residents, and others. This study responds to this need by exploring the community participants’ perspectives in Waslala, Nicaragua about the projects and partnership with Villanova University’s College of Engineering. The two research questions explore the community participants’ perspectives about: (1) outcomes of the projects or partnership, and (2) educational goals. Community participants’ perspectives call for a broader conceptualization of what counts as outcomes and highlight the importance of participation in all phases of the research process. Supporting existing scholarship about host community motivations to serve as co-educators, my findings describe what the community participants want to teach university students. Community participants’ perspectives describe a desired shift in students and a move towards critical global citizenship education. This study highlights the utility of Fraser’s (2009) theory of social justice and Andreotti’s (2006) framework for critical global citizenship education as useful tools to analyze and understand GSL partnerships.<br>Temple University--Theses

Chambers, Josephine Michael. "The discourse and reality of "win-win" interventions for forests and people in the Peruvian Amazon." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/276433.

Abstract:
Local projects aiming to jointly reduce deforestation, climate change and poverty are increasingly popular. Yet, despite widespread claims of “win-win” success, there is growing evidence of significant trade-offs. My doctoral research examines three globally widespread strategies to achieve “win-win” outcomes by both conserving forests and improving the well-being of local people: 1) voluntary incentive-based mechanisms such as Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) and sustainable intensification, 2) protected area enforcement alongside livelihood compensation, 3) community-based natural resource management. In the region of San Martín in northern Peru, over 50 million US dollars have been committed to these approaches since 2008 by international actors such as Disney, Hugo Boss and Althelia Ecosphere. This thesis compares the perspectives of organisations and local community members across 15 project sites in this region regarding these strategies and their implications for local people and forests. Organisational perspectives were investigated through 36 semi-structured interviews with project managers and a review of 103 project documents. Local perspectives were explored through 15 participatory workshops and 270 day-long semi-ethnographic mixed method interviews with project beneficiary and non-beneficiary households. The main body of this thesis uncovers a significant gap between “win-win” project theories of change and outcomes in San Martín. Combined quantitative and qualitative analyses demonstrate the role of different social, economic, political and ecological factors in producing and sustaining conservation and well-being outcomes. These outcomes are explored through twenty-seven distinct ways of framing “successful” outcomes for forests and/or people, based on diverse community and external perspectives. This permitted an examination of what interventions appeared to be achieving given the broader context, as well as the implications of how “success” is framed. My findings highlight several ways in which the assumptions underpinning projects tend to break down in practice. For example, attempts to increase farmers’ income to reduce pressure on forests ignored how increased wealth was actually a principle driver of deforestation. Additionally, although projects often claimed that material incentives could “crowd in” intrinsic values for nature, in practice this did not commonly occur. The contradictions between local and organisational perspectives led me to examine how projects maintain their coherence, plausibility and legitimacy despite being largely unreflective of local dynamics. I found that “win-win” strategies were wrapped up in globally hegemonic discourses – protection-focused, community-oriented and incentive-based – which differed in how they framed problems and embraced assumptions about solutions. For example, the protection-focused discourse viewed nature as “pristine” and appealed to protected area enforcement to safeguard it from local people. Contrastingly, the community-oriented discourse emphasised the role of nature in human well-being and thus sought to increase awareness through community initiatives. Finally, the incentive-based discourse emphasised the economic value of nature and used material benefits to incentivise “self-interested” actors to conserve. These relatively narrow views of human behaviour produced unrealistic expectations that limited project success. In spite of this, these global “win-win” discourses shaped the structures, policies, practices and subjectivities of project accountability chains in ways which served to reinforce them. To escape the performative circularity of these discourses and the associated gap between “win-win” project intentions/narratives and local realities, I propose a similarly discursive intervention to pursue transformative change within San Martín and globally. The intervention seeks to transform how knowledge is produced in conservation and development research and practice in order to shape structures, policies, practices and subjectivities in ways which facilitate more bottom-up approaches to conservation governance and more directly confront hegemonic neoliberal governance structures.

Abstract:
Purpose: Environmental sustainability was firstly thought to be an obstacle to economic development, whereas innovation promotes it. Nowadays, the contradiction between these two terms is less and the purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of the connection between environmental sustainability and eco-innovations as this can lead to a win to win procedure with the help of the relevant strategies that should be applicable based also on scientific evidence. Design – Methodology – Approach: This paper consists of four case studies in the sustainability and eco-innovation sector in Sweden. An abductive method is used. Emails were sent and phone calls were made to the companies. Skype and telephone interviews were conducted. Findings: The findings provide a practical contribution to the companies of how certain strategies can be implemented in businesses so as to connect environmental sustainability and eco-innovations. Moreover, the findings showed that barriers did not appear that could influence or change companies’ strategies. Research limitations / implications: This paper is only limited to one dimension of sustainability, that of the environment, besides focuses on eco-innovations that come from the gulf of the environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the thesis is limited in the strategies that businesses implement towards environmental sustainability and eco-innovations, as well as the potentials barriers that may come up. Practical Implications: The practical implications are identified to the actions / strategies that businesses follow towards environmental sustainability and eco-innovations. Originality – Value: This paper finds and fills the gap that many companies have as far as the non-comprehension of how environmental sustainability and eco-innovations are connected by the means of implementing specific strategies. Key Words: sustainability, innovation, eco-innovation, strategies for sustainability and eco-innovations, barriers. Paper: Master Thesis

Abstract:
The hotel business is facing great challenges meeting the guest’s constantly pivoted expectations. In order to maintain the guest offering attractive, hotels are investing more than ever in technology with SST as a strategy of survival. This changes the customers’ role which makes the customer adoption doubtful. Purpose  The purpose of this study is to create a deeper knowledge for adoption of SST from a customer perspective. This by identify and understand triggers of a hotel guest’s attitude and intention to use SST at the check in. Completion  With support from a literature review, a pre-study in form of unstructured interviews with hotel guests took place in order to identify triggers. With the pre-study and literature review in mind a survey was carried out and later analysed using the software SPSS. The quantitative analysis was supported by qualitative results from the pre-study in order to fulfil the purpose. Conclusion  The hotel guest has in general a good attitude to SST at the check in which is shown to by a large extent be explained by the ability to reduce queue and waiting time. Thus is the guest’s need for interaction a hinder for adoption. SST at the check in is more or less seen as a natural service progress, but the need for interaction implies that the guest is not quite ready for how technology is changing role and script. Instead interaction can take place separated from the check in - as long as personnel is available for interaction on the guest’s own terms there are good chances to increase their attitude and thereby usage of SST.

Abstract:
To support the transition towards a low-carbon economy, mining companies, international financial institutions and governments are preparing to drastically scale up mineral extraction of energy transition minerals such as cobalt and lithium. Mineral extraction, however, has far-reaching impacts on the biophysical environment and mining-affected communities that may become more severe under a changing climate. In May 2019, the World Bank sought to respond to these challenges with the launch of its climate-smart mining Facility, evoking critique from non-governmental organisations working in solidarity with frontline communities. Drawing on poststructuralist political ecology and discourse analysis, this study examines the conflicting narratives on mining for the energy transition and interrogates the political solutions made conceivable through these narratives. Utilizing documents by proponents and opponents of the climate-smart mining Facility, and semi-structured interviews, the analysis reveals two contrasting discourses on mining for the energy transition, problematising climate change as a problem of rising CO2 emissions, and as a social justice problem rooted in global inequality respectively. These distinct conceptualisations generate three key and overlapping tensions, relating to (i) global versus local priorities, (ii) mitigation and adaptation, and (iii) socio-technical versus socio-political transformations. By highlighting these discursive processes, the results aid our understanding in how mining is made salient in the carbon constrained future, and which actors are likely to benefit and be harmed by the promotion of climate-smart mining.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to provide the United States Marine Corps (USMC) with an analysis of Windows NT 5.0 Network Operating System (NOS). This analysis will assist the Network Operations Center (NOC) in preparation for the eventual migration of Windows NT 5.0 into the Marine Corps Enterprise Network (MCEN). NT 5.0 offers some significant enhancements over earlier versions. Active Directory provides a unified platform to manage NOS resources by storing user information, network shares and policies. NT File System (NTFS) version 5 permits dynamic allocation of primary storage space to each user. NT 5.0 also improves network security by incorporating use of the Kerberos Version 5 protocol, providing integrated security for authentication and file encryption. A top-down migration strategy should be incorporated by the NOC. Particularly important is how the NOC builds the Domain Naming Service (DNS) conventions for the MCEN. This will require every subordinate unit to adhere to the naming convention of its chain of command. Migrating from Banyan Vines to Windows NT presents a significant change to the organization. An effective Change Management strategy can assist members of the organization in understanding the sense of loss and uncertainty that occur in times of transition, and to deal with these changes effectively

Cairns, Justin. "Emissions abatement technology, fuels and low emissions vehicles : win-win for air quality and climate change." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/2120.

Full text
Abstract:
The impact of a change in emissions abatement technology, fuel or vehicle on carbon dioxide (CO) 2 and toxic air pollutant emissions derived from road transport was investigated. Road transport emissions were calculated and non-mobile source emissions rates were compiled for the base year 2005 for the City of Leicester, which was the case study for the research. Factor and cluster analysis were applied so that roads could be classified into groups, allowing diurnal traffic profiles to be assigned to roads with similar attributes prior to air quality modelling and to enable the characteristics of typical roads in Leicester to be identified. Five road classifications were developed. The emissions inventory compiled along with meteorological data, background pollutant concentration values and the five diurnal traffic profiles were input into an air quality model. The BOOT evaluation framework (Chang and Hanna 2005) was used to statistically evaluate the performance of the air quality model through comparisons of predicted and observed pollutant concentrations. The model was found to significantly over-predict and under-predict concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO) and particles with a diameter of less than ten microns (PM) at seven and five 210 monitoring locations across Leicester. A discussion of the sources of error in prediction was presented. The base-case was edited to reflect a change in emissions abatement technology, fuel or vehicle and emissions were recalculated. In addition, a vehicle kilometres travelled (VKT) restriction was imposed on the vehicle fleet that did not allow any increase in VKT from the base year. The changes to the base-case were made in increments of 5% until 100% was reached. Regression analysis was used to create 13 models that allowed the impact of the road transport strategies on CO and pollutant 2 emissions to be explored. A reduction in both CO and toxic air pollutant emissions (‘win-win’) was found when the penetration 2 of zero emissions vehicles (ZEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to the car fleet was modelled. Overall, the highest reduction in toxic pollutant and CO emissions were found for ZEVs, 2 which represent electric vehicles (EVs) under current legislation. A 53% (or greater) penetration of ZEVs to the car fleet was the only strategy for which a 50% reduction in CO for a 1990 base was 2 found. Therefore, this indicates that substantial and arguably radical changes are required if air quality and climate change limit values and targets to be achieved. A win-win for air quality and climate change was found when new emissions abatement technology was introduced into the car fleet. However, greater pollutantemissions reductions were observed with the introduction of new emissions abatement technology to light goods vehicle (LGV) and heavy goods vehicle (HGV) stocks. These strategies were found to have a negligible impact on CO 2 emissions. Consequently a trade-off was found where a ‘win-win’ was achieved through changes to the car fleet but at the cost of higher pollutant emissions reductions from other strategies. The introduction of new emissions abatement technology to the bus fleet on roads predominantly on key traffic corridors within Leicester’s air quality management area (AQMA) resulted in substantial air quality benefits. The same strategy did not result in a reduction in CO emissions. However, in the 2 context of an overall sustainable transport strategy the benefits of increasing bus patronage, which in turn may reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles on the road, is likely to have a more than compensatory effect. Substantial pollutant emissions reductions were found as a result of the introduction of new emissions abatement technology into the HGV and LGV fleets. However, these strategies were found to have negligible CO emissions reductions and therefore did not provide a win-win for air quality and climate change. Similarly, a win-win from the introduction of LPG to the car fleet was not found. Therefore, the uptake of LPG or investment in the introduction of new emissions abatement technology to the LGV or HGV fleets should only be considered as a part of a sustainable policy package that comprises other measures, such as logistics optimisation or a reduction in VKT. The findings of this research were used to inform a set of policy actions for Leicester City Council.

Abstract:
Organisations around the world are today looking for new approaches to maintain or develop competitive advantages, reduce costs, free-up capital and improve quality and service. The traditional customer-supplier relation is characterised by the parties focusing on their own cost reduction, creating win-loose scenarios. Companies today are starting to develop their customer-supplier relations towards more relation-focused approaches. The systems approach is a basis for creating win-win relations between the system components. A win-win relation is looked upon in this thesis as the mutual efforts by customer and supplier in finding and reducing the effect of factors that are causing costs and losses for both customer and supplier. The thesis describes a suggested model for estimating win-win potential for supplier and customer in a maintenance contract regarding civil jet engines. The model is defined as consisting of core values, techniques, and tools for estimating win-win potential. The model is applied in supplier and customer scenario. Findings from applying the model indicate that the supplier's maintenance support performance was a parameter affecting loss factors for both supplier and customer. Investigation pointed out the maintenance supplier's organisation, the supplier's maintenance capacity, and the supplier's spare part inventory as the major causes for problems with maintenance support performance.<br><p>Godkänd; 2001; 20070313 (ysko)</p>

This paper uses a logistic regression model to assess the impact capital investment has on the probability of winning a game in the franchised 2018 North American League Championship Series. We have taken data from every game played across a variety of predictors to find that, though significant, capital difference provides at best an approximately 12% predictor of win probability. While other covariates tested provide statistical significance, the variability of these covariates make it hard to say with confidence what optimal in-game strategy is, beyond previously obvious notions of win condition.

Previous research has revealed that the functions of the dorsomedial (DMS) and dorsolateral (DLS) striatum are dissociable. Some of this evidence was obtained using the win-stay (WS) task, in which lights at the entrances to the arms of a radial maze indicate the locations of food. This task is thought to depend on stimulus-response (S-R) learning mediated in part by the DLS. The present experiments used different versions of the WS task developed for an automated 8-arm radial maze. In Experiment 1, no evidence for a Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer effect on WS learning was obtained. In Experiments 2 and 3, in contrast to previous studies, none of the versions of the WS task used here were impaired by DLS lesions. Two versions of the task were dependent on the DMS, but not DLS or dorsal hippocampus. A possible explanation for these findings is the occurrence of parallel learning involving the amygdala, since the versions of the task used here are postulated to promote stimulus-reward learning. The DMS could be expressing amygdala-based learning through an amygdalostriatal pathway. This is the first demonstration of a WS task that is not impaired by DLS lesions and may not be due to S-R learning.<br>Des recherches antérieures ont révélé des rôles dissociables de la partie dorsomédiane (DMS) et dorsolatérale (DLS) du corps strié.

In the spring 2017 semester, East Tennessee State University (ETSU) hosted an on-campus Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Through a series of discussions with other department faculty, it was decided to offer the experience as an internship for accounting students who had completed the federal income tax course in our accounting curriculum. Although one could easily see the benefits of VITA for taxpayers who received the service, I personally had no idea what a blessing the experience would be, nor did I recognize the positive ripple effects it would have for students, alumni and employers. This article will explain what the VITA program is and the process to develop a VITA site.

Abstract:

Lewenhagen, Lars. "Coupled careers: Win-win or zero-sum? : How the partner’s occupational status relates to individual labor market outcomes." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Sociologiska institutionen, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-144410.

Full text
Abstract:
The dynamics between partners’ careers have implications for household and gender inequality as heterosexual unions are usually formed by two individuals with similar educational attainment where the man has a stronger labor market position. This paper examines how the partner’s occupational status relates to individual career outcomes, and how the association varies by gender. The literature reports conflicting expectations on the subject. Social capital theory suggests that an occupationally successful partner can be beneficial to one’s career because of useful contacts, information, and advice. Economic theory assumes a negative relationship between the resources of the partner and own career outcomes due to less time and effort spent in the labor market. Using multiple regression analysis predicting hourly wage, annual income, and career progression, the contrasting hypotheses are tested on Swedish panel data including 1,065 married or cohabitating individuals. Results show a positive correlation between the partner’s occupational status at the start of cohabitation and hourly wage and career progression. The association does not differ significantly between men and women. However, the findings show that gender is more important than the partners’ occupational status for the interaction between careers in dual-earner couples.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the will to win in asymmetric war. Asymmetric war, in which one side has an overwhelming advantage over its opponent, will likely be the war of the future for the United States in the post-Cold War uni-polar world. To win an asymmetric war, the individual and then the masses must be motivated to fight and, ultimately, the will to win must be cultivated and sustained for victory. Religion is a highly effective motivat or for both the individual and the masses. This motivation, when properly directed, can provide the will to win in the face of over whelming odds. This thesis focuses on religion as the primary motivator in an asymmetric war. Religion is a strong motivat or for the individual because off our factors: appropriateness, identity, rationality, and religionαs strength as an internally consistent logic. With a highly motivated individual, an organizationg a insspecific advantages by focusing on the religious aspects of the conflict. These advantages are: commitment, legitimacy, membership, and longevity. These are the measurable elements that create a strong will to win. Three case studiesâ Iran and Iraq, Hezbollah and Israel, and the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) and Algeria-are explored as examples of contemporary asymmetric conflict. These case studies are used to examine the asymmetries between the countries in conflict and test the validity of our theory about the significance of the will to win.

We characterize unresponsive customers as either prospects that have never purchased from a firm, or former customers that have not purchased in at least twelve months. Since 55% of all communication is non-verbal, how can online firms cut through the silence and engage these unresponsive customers digitally? Our paper is an exploration into the three current management strategies firms implement to reach the unresponsive customer: acquisition, retargeting, and win-back. Included is an examination into recent technological advancements that provide a new layer of visibility into the behavior and emotion of the unresponsive customer. We also discuss how Emotional Value, which is described as the economic worth of feelings, can be implemented to more effectively win-back customers.<br>by Alan O. Ringvald and Abraham C. Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2010.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 101-104).<br>My thesis work developed out of a specific book: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. The book is one of the best-selling self-help books of all time. Every part of the book was material for my project: The words. The author. The style. The physical object. I also use myself, the reader as a material. These materials can be manipulated like paint or clay or wood. But materials have limitations and resistances. That's what makes the whole thing interesting. In fact, it was my material resistances - my shyness, my nervousness - which led me to begin working with How to Win Friends and Influence People in the first place. My thesis project, How to Win Friends and Influence People is an animation and series of sculptural props that examines Dale Carnegie's book. The written thesis will explore notions of performance, humor, anxiety, and the self as they appear in this project and my previous work completed here at MIT. It will also explore my art in more general way. What is my process as an artist? How do I make decisions? Who do I make them for? And here it is. I hope you like it.<br>by Jess Wheelock.<br>S.M.
