Full textThis paper describes the development of a control system with dead time compensation applied to a fan to simulate wind effects in models of vessels. The system is installed on the academic towing tank of the Naval Architecture and Oceanic Engineering Department of the University of São Paulo. A control system based on computer is designed for testing and validation, proceeding initially to identify the system to be controlled. In the control loop, the set-point is the desired speed of the wind on a pre-defined distance from the fan and it can be either a constant value (representing a constant wind) or a time-varying value (representing a wind gust). The actuator system consists of a frequency-inverter that drives the fan and the wind speed is measured by an anemometer, whose signal is used as feedback to the controller. The tuning of the controller is made by the internal model control (IMC) and the effect of dead time is observed in the tests, applying the compensator based on Smith Predictor to minimize it. Through the results from the tests, it was concluded that the Smith Predictor improves the performance of the wind generation system.

Full textThis doctoral thesis presents a methodology for the online condition monitoring of the electrical power drive in wind energy systems based on the local measurement of the DC-bus magnetic field. The work is divided into two complementary parts. In the first part, some contributions related to the estimation of the state and parameters for certain classes of nonlinear systems are provided. The estimators have been validated in simulation and on test benches. The second part focuses on the implementation and control design of two benchmarks used to study defects in a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) system and an induction motor power drive. In the former benchmark, the parameters identification of the induction machine and the controller design of the DFIG system are carried out. For the latter test bench, the notable work is to build an induction machine drive for the purpose of fault investigation, in which a PWM generator is developed to control and create the fault of the converter. Furthermore, virtual sensors are designed to estimate mechanical speed that is used to calculate the characteristic frequencies, and mechanical torque signal that has influence on the amplitude of some typical fault signatures. Finally, based on the theoretical aspect of the selected faults, the relevant simulations are developed and experiments are implemented on the benchmarks in order to validate the proposed technique. It has been shown that the diagnostic relying on the magnetic field measurement is feasible and offers various advantages such as simplicity and cost-effectiveness

Full textNearshore marine environment contains many complex processes, but the lack of high-resolution data over a large area during a long time is often the primary obstacle to further research. High-frequency (HF) radar is a mean of remote sensing which obtains continuous near-real time sea surface information over a large area. Thus the study of inversion of marine parameters from HF radar data is very meaningful. Thisthesis makes use of a 13-month-long dataset collected by two phased array HF radar to investigate the characteristics of the sea echo signals, study the data processing and inversion methods, compute sea surface parameters and evaluate the accuracy of radarinversion of swell parameters.The thesis refers to the ground wave HF radar, whose radio waves interact with ocean by Bragg resonance scattering. The development history and applications of HF radar is introduced. The basic theory of electromagnetic wave is reviewed. The principles of inversion of sea surface current, wind direction and swell parameters are described. The feasibility of the swell parameter inversion is investigated. Based on theoretical analysis and statistical studies of a large number of samples, the thesis proposes a series of methods on raw signal processing and quality control, including the determination of the noise level, data averaging in space and time, the proper identification of spectral peaks, the peak width threshold, etc. Respecting the characteristics of different physical processes, inversions of current and wind use spectra collected every 20 min; inversion of swell parameters uses one-hour averaged spectra. The statistics of qualified spectra for swell parameter calculations are presented for both stations. A set of efficient, with a reduced computational cost, automatic computing programs are developed to do the processing and derive marine parameters. Radial current velocities are derived from single radar station. Current vector fields are obtained by combination of both stations. One-year mean flow field in the Iroise Sea is shown, together with the computation of vorticity and divergence. A one-month SeaSonde radar dataset off Qingdao is studied. One-month mean flow pattern together with vorticity and divergence are presented.Relative wind direction with respect to radar look direction is measured through ratio of Bragg peaks amplitudes. Different empirical models are employed to derive radar-inverted relative wind direction. Results show reasonable agreement with model estimations. Different directional distribution models are used to measure the spreading factor for the Iroise Sea. The thesis focuses on the study of swell parameters. Results are validated by buoy and wave model (WAVEWATCH III) data. The assessments show that the accuracy of swell frequency is very good, the accuracy of swell significant waveheight is reasonable, and the accuracy of relative swell direction is low.Consistency of measurements by both radar stations is verified by comparison between the two. This also supports the use of double samples to do the inversion. Use of two radars not only further improves the accuracy but also solves the ambiguity of relative swell direction from single station and gives the absolute wave direction to a certain precision. The thesis proposes a constant relative directionmethod to derive swell significant waveheight, based on the studies of radar integral equation and the inverted results of relative swell direction. This proposal is demonstrated to improve the agreement of radar inversion and buoy/model provided significant waveheight and increases significantly the number of samples. The thesis investigates the accuracy of swell parameters obtained by HF radar. Contributions of random errors in radar observations are quantified. Comparing the differences between radar and buoy/model estimations gives assessments of the contribution of radar intrinsic uncertainty and contribution of other factors

Full textIn recent years many high-rise buildings have been built, which are a way to represent the economic and technological power of nations. Concomitantly, the structures have become slender and more flexible, and the dynamic phenomena of wind, which in low buildings do not represent a great relevance in the loading, start to show their effects. In this way, it is extremely important to know how the wind flow and the pressure distribution occur around these structures. In this research, two real projects, present in the national engineering, are characterized aerodynamically through data from wind tunnel tests. The loadings were processed through the simultaneous integration of pressures and transformed into force spectra, which aid in the visualization of the kinetic energy contained in the bursts, in the occurrence of vortex shedding, buffeting and the influence of the neighboring buildings on the wind flow. The analysis is performed locally and globally, making it possible to verify which "zone", or height range, is more significant to the loading of the structure as a whole. It can be seen that the phenomenon of vortex shedding is characterized by a peak in the crosswind spectrum and the buffeting phenomenon appears when there are buildings or obstacles in the windward region. Finally, the results presented here can be helpful in the pre-design of structures with similar configurations, in the comparison and validation for future researches and as a reference in the review of normative codes. Emphasis is given to the importance of wind tunnel testing, which allows the designer to simulate all loading cases and neighborhood effects with greater precision compared to simplified methods currently contained in codes and standards.

Full textLa predicció de vent és clau per a la integració de l'energia eòlica en els sistemes elèctrics. Els models meteorològics es fan servir per predicció, però tenen unes graelles geogràfiques massa grans per a reproduir totes les característiques locals que influencien la formació de vent, fent necessària la predicció d'acord amb les sèries temporals de mesures passades d'una localització concreta. L'objectiu d'aquest treball d'investigació és l'aplicació de xarxes neuronals profundes a la predicció \textit{multi-step} utilitzant com a entrada series temporals de múltiples variables meteorològiques, per a fer prediccions de vent d'ací a 12 hores. Les sèries temporals de vent són seqüències d'observacions meteorològiques tals com, velocitat del vent, temperatura, humitat, pressió baromètrica o direcció. Les sèries temporals de vent tenen dues propietats estadístiques rellevants, que són la no linearitat i la no estacionalitat, que fan que la modelització amb eines estadístiques sigui poc precisa. En aquesta tesi es validen i proven models de deep learning per la predicció de vent, aquests models d'arquitectures d'autoaprenentatge s'apliquen al conjunt de dades de vent més gran del món, que ha produït el National Renewable Laboratory dels Estats Units (NREL) i que té 126,692 ubicacions físiques de vent distribuïdes per total la geografia de nord Amèrica. L'heterogeneïtat d'aquestes sèries de dades permet establir conclusions fermes en la precisió de cada mètode aplicat a sèries temporals generades en llocs geogràficament molt diversos. Proposem xarxes neuronals profundes de tipus multi-capa, convolucionals i recurrents com a blocs bàsics sobre els quals es fan combinacions en arquitectures heterogènies amb variants, que s'entrenen amb estratègies d'optimització com drops, connexions skip, estratègies de parada, filtres i kernels de diferents mides entre altres. Les arquitectures s'optimitzen amb algorismes de selecció de paràmetres que permeten obtenir el model amb el millor rendiment, en totes les dades. Les capacitats d'aprenentatge de les arquitectures aplicades a ubicacions heterogènies permet establir relacions entre les característiques d'un lloc (complexitat del terreny, variabilitat del vent, ubicació geogràfica) i la precisió dels models, establint mesures de predictibilitat que relacionen la capacitat dels models amb les mesures definides a partir d'anàlisi espectral o d'estacionalitat de les sèries temporals. Els mètodes desenvolupats ofereixen noves i superiors alternatives als algorismes estadístics i mètodes tradicionals.
Arquitecturas de aprendizaje profundo aplicadas a la predición en múltiple escalón de series temporales de viento. La predicción de viento es clave para la integración de esta energía eólica en los sistemas eléctricos. Los modelos meteorológicos tienen una resolución geográfica demasiado amplia que no reproduce todas las características locales que influencian en la formación del viento, haciendo necesaria la predicción en base a series temporales de cada ubicación concreta. El objetivo de este trabajo de investigación es la aplicación de redes neuronales profundas a la predicción multi-step usando como entrada series temporales de múltiples variables meteorológicas, para realizar predicciones de viento a 12 horas. Las series temporales de viento son secuencias de observaciones meteorológicas tales como, velocidad de viento, temperatura, humedad, presión barométrica o dirección. Las series temporales de viento tienen dos propiedades estadísticas relevantes, que son la no linealidad y la no estacionalidad, lo que implica que su modelización con herramientas estadísticas sea poco precisa. En esta tesis se validan y verifican modelos de aprendizaje profundo para la predicción de viento, estos modelos de arquitecturas de aprendizaje automático se aplican al conjunto de datos de viento más grande del mundo, que ha sido generado por el National Renewable Laboratory de los Estados Unidos (NREL) y que tiene 126,682 ubicaciones físicas de viento distribuidas por toda la geografía de Estados Unidos. La heterogeneidad de estas series de datos permite establecer conclusiones válidas sobre la validez de cada método al ser aplicado en series temporales generadas en ubicaciones físicas muy diversas. Proponemos redes neuronales profundas de tipo multi capa, convolucionales y recurrentes como tipos básicos, sobre los que se han construido combinaciones en arquitecturas heterogéneas con variantes de entrenamiento como drops, conexiones skip, estrategias de parada, filtros y kernels de distintas medidas, entre otros. Las arquitecturas se optimizan con algoritmos de selección de parámetros que permiten obtener el mejor modelo buscando el mejor rendimiento, incluyendo todos los datos. Las capacidades de aprendizaje de las arquitecturas aplicadas a localizaciones físicas muy variadas permiten establecer relaciones entre las características de una ubicación (complejidad del terreno, variabilidad de viento, ubicación geográfica) y la precisión de los modelos, estableciendo medidas de predictibilidad que relacionan la capacidad de los algoritmos con índices que se definen a partir del análisis espectral o de estacionalidad de las series temporales. Los métodos desarrollados ofrecen nuevas alternativas a los algoritmos estadísticos tradicionales.

Full textIn this thesis, the author describes various evaluation criteria, in particular the C-rate (charge/discharge-rate), of energy storage (ES) systems to explain the efficiency and technical benefits of battery-ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage (HES), and the technical characteristics of subsequently derived short-duration and long-duration type ES. In addition, for effective use of energy storage, a straightforward state of charge (SOC) correction method for energy neutral operation is proposed, and through a simple comparative example of ES operation, the effectiveness of HES in relation to simple ES is explained. A case is considered in which a hybrid ES controls the wind power ramp rate to comply with the regional system operator’s smoothing requirement, and an operation method is suggested through simulation. The simulation is carried out using a frequency spectrum analysis of wind power output profile and the C-rate of the hybrid storage system, and an energy neutral operation method for ES is proposed based on the simulated charging/discharging power sharing profile and SOC variations of the Li-battery and the ultracapacitor.
