Das Schaufenster des 20. Jahrhunderts bildet ein epochemachendes Schema, insofern hier der Touchscreen der vernetzten Mediengesellschaft des 21. Jahrhunderts präfiguriert ist. Das Schaufenster ist wie der Touchscreen ein Display und als solches zeichnet es sich als Schnittstelle aus. Eine Schnittstelle zwischen Innen und Außen, zwischen Absentem und Verborgenem, zwischen Imaginärem und Realem. Im Schaufenster werden Künste, Medientechnologien, Wissenschaften miteinander verschaltet, Affekte hervorgerufen und entsprechend eine ganze Begehrensstruktur ausgeprägt, die konstitutiv für die Aufmerksamkeitsökonomie des 21. Jahrhunderts ist.1 In der Co-Autorschaft von Psychotechnik, experimenteller Psychologie, Gestalttheorie, Designtheorie, Werbewissenschaft, Architektur, den Künsten und Medien wird der kalkulierte Eingriff in den Affekthaushalt auf Basis perzeptiver und psychischer Gesetzmäßigkeiten und damit die Programmierung einer skopischen Subjektivität möglich.2 Skopisch ist diese Subjektivität, insofern es sich bei ihr nicht um einfache Betrachtungsverhältnisse nach dem Schema »Subjekt betrachtet ausgestelltes Objekt« handelt, sondern um die Kommerzialisierung der Blickstruktur, welche die vom Schaufenster erzielte »Bildwirkung« (Casson 1930: 14) als Beachtungsverhältnisse einer neuen Aufmerksamkeitsökonomie installiert. Solche Beachtungsverhältnisse legen, wie exemplarisch an zwei recht unterschiedlichen Phänomenen - nämlich dem Selfie und der Cancel Culture - zu zeigen sein wird, den Grundstein für den invective gaze in der digitalen Medienkultur.
