The genus Scleria P.J. Bergius is pantropical, occurs in various habitats such as forests, fields, and wetlands, and is morphologically diverse. Some species have a winged sheath, which remains on the leaf blade and forms the last pair of costae. Anatomical observations of leaf blades of Scleria plusiophylla Steud. revealed the presence of inverted vascular bundles in the region of the wing. During the development of the shoot apical meristem of S. plusiophylla, it was observed that the wing emerges through divisions and enlargement of protoderm cells of the abaxial surface and subsurface cell

Mathematical model of the aerodynamics of the autorotating rotor with flapping blades in hover is made on the base of the helicopter rotor blade-element theory. A derivation of a theoretical model for the vertical autorotation of a samara wing is presented. The dynamic effects are treated in an accurate manner. The aerodynamic effects are calculated by using the blade element/momentum theory. An experimental setup, aimed at verifying the theoretical model, is also described. Comparison between theoretical and experimental results are presented.

AbstractIn this paper, a new design of a small horizontal-axis wind turbine is introduced. The design is based on the authors’ patent, which uses permanent magnets impeded into a shroud that holds the rotor blades. The generator coils are installed on a fixed diffuser that houses the rotor and acts as a wind concentrator. Therefore, the new design has no hub and is based on direct coupling for electricity generation. The main features of the design have been explored to highlight the advantages with a focus on how the new design can be integrated with the recent development of green buildings.

In this work an emerging hydrokinetic energy technology, Tethered UnderSea Kites (TUSK), is studied. TUSK systems use an axial-flow turbine and generator mounted on a rigid, underwater winged kite that is tethered to a floating surface buoy to extract power from an ocean current. The tethered underwater kite is controlled to travel in cross-current motions at a high velocity which is at least four to five times larger than the ocean current velocity. This higher velocity significantly increases the potential power output compared to conventional fixed marine turbines. Modeling and simulation o

Abstract:
Quad-rotors are widely used for unmanned VTOL missions due to simplicity and ease of control. A common civilian and military mission for a UAS is the delivery of small payloads from 5 lbs to 10 lbs. This paper compares the traditional quad-rotor configuration to a quad-rotor biplane and a tiltwing configurations for an unmanned resupply mission using the HYDRA rotorcraft design and analysis code. Physics-based blade weight models and a Finite Element Analysis module for airframe weight estimation are utilized in lieu of empirically derived trends. This analysis provides comparisons of performa
