Abstract:
Electric resistivity survey was carried out in three selected dumpsites in Gusau metropolis for groundwater contamination. The dumpsites were investigated by conducting Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES) using Schlumberger array with maximum current electrode separations of 180 m. Five VES were conducted on each dumpsite making a total of fifteen VES along three profiles. The field data obtained from VES were analyzed using WinGlink softwar. The VES results revealed three subsurface layers. The topsoil had resistivity ranging from 1.45 Ωm to 48.2 Ωm while the thicknesses varied from 0.47 m to

Abstract:
A mechanism is presented that can generate insect winglike motion. This motion includes both flapping out of the stroke plane in addition to twist of the wing. The mechanism has a single degree of freedom and employs a five-bar mechanism in addition to an auxiliary four-bar mechanism. The parameters in the mechanism were optimized to generate a prescribed motion of the wing taken from a hawk moth kinematic flight data. A scaled model of the mechanism was fabricated to verify practical feasibility of the design. In future, we will miniaturize this mechanism on our flying-bird prototypes.

AbstractAerospace production systems face increasing requirements for flexibility and reconfiguration, along with considerations of cost, utilisation, and efficiency. This drives a need for systems with a small number of automation platforms (e.g. industrial robots) that can make use of a larger number of end effectors that are potentially flexible or multifunctional. This leads to the challenge of ensuring that the configuration and location of each end effector is tracked by the system at all times, even in the face of manual adjustments, to ensure that the correct processes are applied to t

The pelagic marine mollusk Clione limacina (class Gastropoda, subclass Opisthobranchaea, order Pteropoda), 3–5 cm in length, swims by rhythmically moving (1–2-Hz) two winglike appendages. Each swim cycle consists of two phases—the dorsal (D) and ventral (V) wing flexions. The nervous system of Clione consists of five pairs of ganglia. The wing movements are controlled by the pedal ganglia giving rise to the wing nerves. The neuronal circuit of the swim central pattern generator (CPG) is located in the pedal ganglia, which is able to generate the basic pattern of rhythmic activity after isolati
