Abstract:
AbstractAnts (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) are ubiquitous and of considerable ecological interest, yet poorly studied in Canada. Given their natural history attributes and relatively low density and diversity in cool boreal forests, there is a need to evaluate the applicability of commonly used approaches to sampling and analysis. We examined the relative utility of two pitfall trap designs, mini-Winkler litter extractions, and colony versus forager sampling for ecological studies. First, we found that Laurent (conventional) and Nordlander (modified to exclude larger nontarget organisms) pitfall t

The ant communities in both a native cerrado remnant in good preservation conditions and an anthropized area have been studied at Bom Despacho, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Winkler technique was used to extract the litter ants, taking out 50 one-square meter litter samples in each area. Sixty-seven species were collected in the well-preserved cerrado area, and 45 in the anthropized one. Important differences were observed between the cerrado remnant and the degraded area, mainly regarding the generic and specific richness. Species richness (Chao2 index) in the native area proved to be higher, whi

Biodiversity can be studied at a species level such as insect group. Insects play important roles in the ecosystem which is affected by the climate factors such as rainfall pattern, humidity and temperature. Changes on this climate pattern might give direct and indirect impacts on the insect activities as the global trend of climate showed a warmer effect which has caused the glacier to melt faster withless ice coverage, the rise at the sea level and the global temperature continues to rise in the future. Demographic characteristics and length of land use occupation time are important factors in the evaluation of the influence of urbanization on biodiversity. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate how population density and human occupation history influence taxonomic and guild spider (Arachnida: Araneae) and ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) diversities in four distinct Administrative Regions (ARs) of the municipality of Salvador (Bahia, Brazil). The ants and spiders in the ARs were collected in different types of green areas: forest fragments, vacant lots, and gardens/backyards, using three

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and the CXCR4 chemokine receptor antagonist Plerixafor are used to mobilize hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC). However, in the autologous setting, prior chemotherapy and radiotherapy impair HSPC mobilizing response to G-CSF and Plerixafor thereby precluding autologous HSC transplantation. We now demonstrate in mice that oncostatin M (OSM) production in the bone marrow (BM) is dramatically increased in response to G-CSF and that OSM counteracts the mobilizing effect of G-CSF and Plerixafor indirectly through the BM stroma. Environmental impact studies often involve monitoring and using bioindicators to evaluate the restoration stage of impacted areas. We aimed to assess ant assemblages’ response to the ecological succession of previously disturbed areas in the Brazilian Amazon. We sampled epigeic ant assemblages in five bauxite mining areas, representing different restoration stages, and compared them with two pristine areas. We also compared trends in species richness at the same mine site investigated 14 years earlier. Ten pitfall traps and four Winkler samples of litter were taken along a 100-m transect in ea
