Abstract:
Winkler’s mattress model is often used as a simplified model to understand how a thin elastic layer, such as a coating, deforms when subject to a distributed normal load: the deformation of the layer is assumed proportional to the applied normal load. This simplicity means that the Winkler model has found a wide range of applications from soft matter to geophysics. However, in the limit of an incompressible elastic layer the model predicts infinite resistance to deformation, and hence breaks down. Since many of the thin layers used in applications are elastomeric, and hence close to incompressible, we consider the question of when the Winkler model is appropriate for such layers. We formally derive a model that interpolates between the Winkler and incompressible limits for thin elastic layers, and illustrate this model by detailed consideration of two example problems: the point-indentation of a coated elastomeric layer and self-sustained lift in soft elastohydrodynamic lubrication. We find that the applicability (or otherwise) of the Winkler model is not determined by the value of the Poisson ratio alone, but by a compressibility parameter that combines the Poisson ratio with a measure of the layer’s slenderness, which itself depends on the problem under consideration.

Abstract:
This article calls for a reassessment of the thought of Paula Winkler (1877–1958), paying renewed attention to her contributions to the cultural Zionist movement in her work on the domestic space as a site of Jewish cultural renewal. Criticizing the trend in modern Jewish scholarship of focusing on Winkler’s biography and her relationship with her husband Martin Buber at the expense of appreciating her innovations as a Zionist thinker, it proposes and demonstrates a close reading of her work as a corrective. Focusing on Winkler’s 1901 essays on Zionism and the Jewish woman, this article illustrates the important challenges Winkler leveled to Buber and the young Zionist intellectual community by awarding the Jewish woman and the private sphere an active and positive role in the Zionist transformation of Jewish life. It concludes that questions of Winkler’s identity are best approached through her own careful navigation of her liminal status in the Jewish and Zionist communities, and the way that she engages the perspective awarded to her as a woman and a non-Jew to formulate her arguments.

Abstract:
Cross walls have been used as alternative auxiliary measures to protect buildings in some areas of Asia. Realizing the inadequacy of the classical Winkler foundation to predict the deflection of the diaphragm wall with cross wall, a modified Winkler foundation of the finite element method (MEFB) was formulated in this paper. Then, the MEFB method was verified through two excavation cases and applied in a new well-documented excavation history. Results showed that the wall deflection by the proposed method was line with the 3D numerical analysis and field observations but smaller than that of classical Winkler’s elastic foundation (EFB) method. The maximum deformation calculated by the MEFB method was predicted to have a reduction of 40∼60% compared to those of the EFB method. Meanwhile, the wall deformation was minimum at the location of cross walls and reaches the maximum value at the midline between two cross walls. Besides, the plane strain ratio PSR d based on the MEFB method was defined to study the interval L , the embedded depth, and arrangement of cross walls. The results indicated the MEFB method was used successfully as a more accurate method than Winkler foundation and is simpler than 3D numerical analysis method for the engineering design of the diaphragm-cross wall system during excavation.

Abstract:
Various methods are applied in the application of plagiarism detection to help check the similarity of a document. Jaro-Winkler Distance can measure the distance between two strings. However, this method basically depends on the position of the word. Latent Semantic Analysis emphasizes the words contained in the document regardless of its linguistic character. This study compares the results of plagiarism detection using the Jaro-Winkler Distance and the Latent Semantic Analysis method. From comparing results of Jaro-Winkler Distance method and Latent Semantic Analysis method, Jaro-Winkler Distance method is better than Latent Semantic Analysis method if using the same test data. Jaro-Winkler Distance method will give plagiarism result 100% and Latent Semantic Analysis method will give plagiarism result 97,14%.

Abstract:
American metaphysical Judaism draws on traditional Jewish practices and texts as well as the American metaphysical religious tradition. This article challenges the relegation of American metaphysical Judaism to the category “New Age Judaism” and opens the door to exploring this area of religious expression in its historical and current forms. Drawing on my fieldwork with, and the writings of, rabbi and shaman Gershon Winkler, I offer an ethnographic exploration of Winkler’s life and religious practice as an example of American metaphysical Judaism. Winkler reads Hebrew scriptures through his “shamanic” lens, looking for what he claims has been lost, overlooked or misinterpreted in traditional Jewish interpretations; focuses on healing through manipulation of energy and “flow;” and incorporates (his construction of) Native American religious practice and insight. I argue that metaphysical Judaism should be understood as a product of American values, metaphysical spirituality and Jewish history and thought.

Abstract:
The first amber lycid taxon, Pseudaplatopterus Kleine, 1940, was discovered in Baltic amber in the middle of the 20th century (Kleine, 1940, 1941); after almost five decades another three Baltic amber genera, Hiekeolycus Winkler, 1987, Kolibaceum Winkler, 1987 and Pietrzeniukia Winkler, 1987 (Winkler, 1987) were added to the list of fossil Lycidae. However, Hiekeolycus was soon demonstrated to be synonymous with the extant Palaearctic lycid genus Helcophorus Fairmaire, 1891 (Kazantsev, 1995, 1997, 2004), while Pietrzeniukia turned out to be synonymous with Kolibaceum, representatives of which were found among the extant net-winged beetles of eastern Asia (Kazantsev, 1997, 2012a).

Abstract:
This paper describes the application of a simplified Winkler model to simulate the observed time-dependent responses of a pipeline at Caen, France, subjected to differential frost heave. The numerical Winkler model developed for a semi-infinite beam embedded in a creeping medium was used to evaluate the response of the Caen pipeline. Despite its simplicity, the Winkler model is able to predict the overall response of deflections and stresses which compares satisfactorily with observed data. In a previous study, the same Winkler analysis was applied to small-scale model steel pipelines embedded in polycrystalline ice, and satisfactory comparisons between the predicted and observed responses were obtained. Consequently, the analyses presented in this paper serve to reconfirm that the Winkler model can also be applied to analyze large-diameter pipelines subjected to differential frost heave. Key words : chilled pipelines, creeping foundation, frozen soils, frost heave.

Abstract:
This article investigates the self-taught experimental animation practice of German-Australian moving image artist Paul Winkler. His practice embraces an array of image manipulation techniques, some of which he invented. This practice originated in 1964, spanning over 50 years, and has recently productively migrated from analogue to digital production. What happens to this practice when we move to digital production? Winkler’s trajectory offers a case study in the shifts and resilience of experimental animation practice through the lens of Vilém Flusser’s ‘technical image’. Flusser’s concept was developed in response to a pervasive digital culture but also reaches back into proto-cinema, maps and prehistoric cave painting.

Abstract:
Element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) is successfully applied to solve the bending problem of plates on a Winkler foundation. The shape function which is characteristic of high-time continuity is formulated by means of weight function. A way to incorpor- ate the self-adaptive influential radius in weight function is proposed. Based on variational principle, this paper derives control equation for the bending of plates on a Winkler foundation from Mindlin-Reissner plate theory. Using penalty function mothed, assembled stiffness matrix which is real symmetry positive definite matrix is deduced. This method can solve the bending problem of plates with different boundary conditions on a Winkler foundation. The corresponding computer programs of EFGM and post-process programs are also developed. Numerical examples show that EFGM solving the bending of plates on a Winkler found is reasonable and feasible. This present study provides a newly effective numerical method for the Winkler foundation bending problem and expands the application field of EFGM.

Abstract:
Water mains are important lifelines of modern urban infrastructure. However, in most developed countries, the average life of these cast or ductile iron pipes approaches 50–75 years. In recent years, the disruption of water sevices as a consequence of water main breaks is on the rise in most Cadadian cities. This paper describes the developement of a simplified Winkler model to stimulate the responses of a jointed water main subjected to differential temperature change and water pressure. The simplified Winkler model accounts for axial and radial restraints offered by the surronding soil. In spite of its simplicity, the Winkler model is able to predict the overall response of strains and stresses, which confirms satisfactorily some of heuristic and documented observations on water main breaks. Key words: water main breaks, pipe–soil interaction, temperature influence, Winkler model.

Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the analysis of bending edge waves travelling in a thick Kirchhoff-type piezoelectric film resting on a Winkler–Fuss foundation. The electromechanical coupling is accounted for in defining flexural rigidities to embrace piezoelectric and dielectric material constants. Dynamics is solved analytically and demonstrated numerically by assuming harmonic wave propagation. It is observed that an increase of the voltage leads to a decrease of the critical velocity, while an increase of the Winkler’s constant leads to an increase of the critical velocity.

Abstract:
Regular domain collocation method based on barycentric rational interpolation for solving irregular thin plate bending problems on Winkler foundation is presented in this article. Embedding the irregular plate into a regular domain, the barycentric rational interpolation is used to approximate the unknown function. The governing equation and the boundary conditions of thin plate bending problems on Winkler foundation in a rectangular region can be discretized by the differentiation matrices of barycentric rational interpolation. The additional method or the substitute method is used to impose the boundary conditions. The overconstraint equations can be solved by using the least square method. Numerical solutions of bending deflection for the irregular plate bending problems on Winkler foundation are obtained by interpolating the data on rectangular region. Numerical examples illuminate that the proposed method for irregular thin plate bending problems on Winkler foundation has the merits of simple formulations, efficiency, and relative error precision of 10−9 orders of magnitude.

Abstract:
The fractional derivative Winkler viscoelastic foundation model is established by introducing the concept of fractional derivative. The control equations of free vibration of elastic Timoshenko beam on fractional derivative Winkler viscoelastic foundation are also built by considering the shear deformation and rotary inertia, and the control equations of elastic Timoshenko beam are decoupled by using the deformation function and considering the properties of fractional derivative, and the expressions of deflection and section corner of elastic Timoshenko beam on fractional derivative Winkler viscoelastic foundation are obtained. The influences of fractional derivative order and shear shape factor on the free vibration of elastic Timoshenko beam are discussed by numerical example.

Abstract:
This paper firstly introduces a new general solution constructed by double trigonometric cosine series with supplementary terms for the bending and vibration analysis of orthotropic rectangular plates with four free edges on the Winkler foundation subjected to arbitrary vertical force. The general solution, which is fourth-order continuously differentiable with less undetermined coefficients, can be used to solve the bending and vibration problems of orthotropic rectangular plates on the Winkler foundation with various physical parameters requiring no classification and superposition. This makes the bending and vibration analysis of orthotropic rectangular plates with four free edges on the Winkler foundation more unified, simplified and regulated. This paper also gives a Series of analytical example to prove that the method is feasible.

Abstract:
Plates are widely used in the machine tool structure. Based on the differential equations of flexural free vibration of a thin plate on Winkler elastic foundation, its dynamic fundamental solutions and the dynamic boundary integral equations are established. The solving methods of the corner point problems are given out. The quadratic elements are used to discretize the boundary integral equations and the receptance mtrix equations of a thin plate on Winkler elastic foundation are established. The fequency scanning method is used to obtain the natural frequencies of the thin plate on Winkler elastic foundation. Case studies showed the effectiveness of the proposed BEM dynamical analysis, which can be also used in the dymical analysis of joints in a machine tool structure.

Abstract:
In order to analyze the displacement and stress of thin plate for cement concrete pavement with rectangle shape and resting on Winkler soil foundation, an analysis model was set up based on the theory of elastic thin plate on Winkler foundation. According to elasticity Kirchhoff theory of thin plates and Winkler soil foundation model, the expressions of displacement and stress were yielded by using the inverse Hankel transform. Numerical method was employed to calculate displacement and stress of the thin plate. Results showed that displacement and stress corresponded with using the method from Code for Highway Design-Pavement. Results showed that the method can provide a new computation method for displacement and stress of the thin plate about cement concrete pavement.

Abstract:
The Winkler modulus for a vertical beam buried in elastic soil is reassessed for the problem of a horizontal loaded pile in the framework of linear elasticity. By matching the integral solution in elastic continuum and the expression with the elastic Winkler modulus, the subgrade modulus of an infinitely long pile embedded into elastic space is obtained first. Then the influence of embedment depth and pile rigidity on the subgrade modulus is evaluated by virtue of Mindlin’s and Kelvin’s solutions, which gives the variation of the Winkler spring stiffness along the pile length. Comparison of the results by the present method for single piles in homogeneous and nonhomogeneous soils has shown good agreement with those obtained from the more rigorous elastic continuum solutions and boundary element method, which also revealed the disadvantage of the conventional Winkler expression in evaluating the displacement of the pile. Finally, the present method is used to analyze the pile–soil–pile interaction of a pile group, which also shows good agreement with the finite element method and the elastic continuum method, and proves the feasibility of extending the active subgrade modulus into the realm of the horizontal loaded pile group.

Abstract:
A refined theory of transversely isotropic beam posting inside Winkler foundation is derived without ad hoc assumptions. Based on elasticity theory, the displacement field and stress states of isotropic body are studied. From boundary conditions, the refined theory of transversely isotropic beam posting inside Winkler foundation is given. The approximate equations for the beam under transverse loadings are derived directly from the refined beam theory.

Abstract:
The problem of stability of the conduit walls of soil-steel structures has been examined by many investigators using either the continuum theory or the Winkler approach in which the soil media is replaced by spring supports. Because of the form of application and assumptions, the continuum analysis overestimates the buckling load while the Winkler analysis underestimates the buckling load. The present paper examines the causes of the discrepancy between the published results obtained from the continuum and the Winkler analysis and arrives at a rationally realistic buckling formula. Furthermore, the effect of spacing between multispan conduits is examined and is taken into consideration in the modified buckling equations, which are adopted by the forthcoming Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code. Key words: conduit, corrugated steel, elastic-plastic, stability, soil-steel bridges.

Abstract:
AbstractAnts (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) are ubiquitous and of considerable ecological interest, yet poorly studied in Canada. Given their natural history attributes and relatively low density and diversity in cool boreal forests, there is a need to evaluate the applicability of commonly used approaches to sampling and analysis. We examined the relative utility of two pitfall trap designs, mini-Winkler litter extractions, and colony versus forager sampling for ecological studies. First, we found that Laurent (conventional) and Nordlander (modified to exclude larger nontarget organisms) pitfall traps were equally efficacious for estimating total species richness. Second, pitfall trapping yielded marginally higher total species richness than mini-Winkler litter sampling, by the incidence-based estimator (Chao2). Third, two studies considering the relationship between captures of individual ants in pitfall traps and identified ant colonies argued for caution in how pitfall captures are interpreted. In the first study, Nordlander traps placed in a grid surrounding nests ofFormica obscuripesForel revealed unique and highly patchy captures of individuals, with no patterns relating to proximity to the nest. In the second study, abundance estimates to compare ant assemblage structure in a simple grassland ecosystem by pitfall trapping (relative) and area-based hand sampling (absolute) for colonies, revealed that relative sampling does not reflect the absolute ant assemblage structure. Our results support, equivocally, the use of pitfall traps (Nordlander) over mini-Winklers in the cool moist forests of west-central British Columbia, but individual specimen counts should not be used when analysing the data.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Record linkage is the task for identifying which records refer to the same entity. When records in different data sources do not have a common key and they contain typographical errors in their identifier fields, the extended Fellegi–Sunter probabilistic record linkage method with consideration of field similarity proposed by Winkler, is one of the most effective methods to perform record linkage to our knowledge. But this method has a limitation that it cannot efficiently handle the problem of missing value in the fields, an inappropriate weight is assigned to record pair containing missing data. Therefore, to improve the performance of Winkler’s probabilistic record linkage method in presence of missing value, we proposed a solution for adjusting record pair’s weight when missing data occurred, which allows enhancing the accuracy of the Winkler’s record linkage decisions without increasing much more computational time.

Abstract:
Closed-form and series solutions are presented for the bending of plates bonded to a thin elastomeric foundation which is in turn bonded to a rigid substrate. The standard fourth-order governing differential equation of a classical Winkler elastic foundation becomes a sixth-order equation for the case of an incompressible foundation. Oscillation decay rates are shown to be significantly different from those of the Winkler solution due to the incompressibility of the elastomer.

Abstract:
A stiffness approach is presented for computing the solution of beams on variable Winkler foundation. The solution may be achieved using only a small number of elements along the beam. Accuracy is dependent only on a preset user criterion. A numerical example demonstrates the efficiency and accuracy of the procedure.
