Abstract:
David Mayhew’s Divided We Govern significantly challenged the conventional wisdom of the adversarial effect of divided government on government effectiveness in the United States. While the post-Mayhewian literature has been centred on legislative productivity as a measure of gridlock, gridlock is here defined as an ‘inability to change policy’. In this study, the preferences of the legislators, such as the filibuster, override and House median veto players are plotted in Euclidean space. The analysis focuses on the influence of the area of the winset, which is an intersection overlapped by the veto players’ indifference curves. There is a substantial impact of the area of the winset on the change in policy output point, which is measured by the ADA scores and by Poole’s Mean Winning Coordinate. Yet divided government has marginal or no effect on policy swing. The conclusion is that the preferences of veto players, but not party control of the government, have a substantial impact on gridlock in the United States.

Abstract:
Naast nettowinst, bedrijfswinst en operationele winst ziet men dan net earnings, earnings before interest, earnings before interest and taxes, earnings before interest, taxes and amortization en ga maar door.

Fundira, Margaret. "Optimization of fermentation processes for the production of indigenous fruit wines (Marula)." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52390.

Abstract:
Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The importance of indigenous fruit wines is not well researched and documented. There is a need to develop and exploit these valuable food resources through improved production practices, storage, preservation and utilization technologies. The maruia fruit is beneficial in many ways, it can be used for making juice, jam, beer or can be eaten as a whole fruit. The highly nutritive nature of the fruit, its distinctive tropical flavor, its wild occurrence and demand by the local and international communities for the by-products of the fruit necessitated efforts to optimize the technological processes for the production of the possible by-products. This study focuses on the fermentation technology of the maruia fruit. The effect of enzymes prior to the fermentation process and post-fermentation was evaluated. For pre-fermentation processes we focused on the ability of commercial enzymes to increase juice yield, improve the clarification and filterability. For pre- and post-fermentation applications, aroma release was considered. The results indicated a significant increase in the yield depending on the enzyme used. An increase of at least 2% was recorded and a maximum of 12% yield increase was observed. The enzymes also had a phenomenal effect on the release of bound monoterpenes and hence enhancing the flavor of the juice. The panel of judges confirmed the results from the gas chromatography analyses by noting an increase in flavor intensity in the enzyme treated juice. The possibility of selecting a yeast strain that performs best during the fermentation of maruia pulp was also looked at. This study aimed at selecting a strain that produces wine and distillate with the typical maruia flavor complex. We showed the effect of the different yeast strains, in the wines and distillates, on the principal volatile compounds. We then correlated the performance of the different strains as perceived by the panel to the various volatile compounds. The effect of fermentation temperature on the performance of the different yeast strains was also considered. Fermenting the maruia pulp at different temperatures resulted in the production of wines and distillates with different volatile profiles for the different yeast strains. The wines and distillates fermented at a low temperature of 15°C were preferred to the wines and distillates fermented at 30°C. However, not all strains performed well at 15°C, strains like NT116 performed better at 30°C. The different commercial strains produced wines and distillates with significantly different flavor profiles. These differences in the flavor profiles were reflected in the sensory evaluation where, depending on the interaction of the volatile compounds some wines and distillates were preferred to others. The effect of the different commercial enzymes and yeast strains should thereof be further evaluated and optimized on a larger scale. This would greatly help prevent variation in quality of the fermented by-products of the maruia fruit.

Abstract:
Solar flares remain a subject of intense study in the solar physics community. These huge releases of energy on the Sun have direct consequences for humans on Earth and in space. The processes that impart tremendous amounts of energy are not well understood. In order to test theoretical models of flare formation and evolution, state of the art, numerical codes must be created that can accurately simulate the wide range of electromagnetic radiation emitted by flares. A direct comparison of simulated radiation to increasingly detailed observations will allow scientists to test the validity of theoretical models. To accomplish this task, numerical codes were developed that can simulate both the thermal and nonthermal components of a flaring plasma, their interactions, and their emissions. The HYLOOP code combines a hydrodynamic equation solver with a nonthermal particle tracking code in order to simulate the thermal and nonthermal aspects of a flare. A solar flare was simulated using this new code with a static atmosphere and with a dynamic atmosphere, to illustrate the importance of considering hydrodynamic effects on nonthermal beam evolution. The importance of density gradients in the evolution of nonthermal electron beams was investigated by studying their effects in isolation. The importance of the initial pitch-angle cosine distribution to flare dynamics was investigated. Emission in XRT filters were calculated and analyzed to see if there were soft X-ray signatures that could give clues to the nonthermal particle distributions. Finally the HXR source motions that appeared in the simulations were compared to real observations of this phenomena.

Abstract:
AbstractThis research explores if wine consumers are aware of the wines of the Greek prefecture of Drama and, in particular, its wines with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), and if they have previously experienced them. It also investigates where do consumers search online for wine information, and which of the 17 directly related to wine terroir attributes they seek information for. Lastly, it explores if the male and female wine consumers have the same level of awareness and experience with these PGI wines, and if they seek the same terroir elements on the online information channels. An online questionnaire was used to collect 917 valid responses. The data analysis showed that all participants were aware of the wines of Drama Prefecture, and as for the PGI wines (PGI wines of Drama, Hadriani, and Agora), about one half of the sample knows the Drama PGI wines and 48% has had previous experience, 29% knows Hadriani PGI wines and 24.3% has previous experience, and 23.3% knows PGI Agora wines and 20.2% has previous experience with these wines. Main online information search channels are the winery’s website, Google + and Facebook. The terroir elements most searched for information is “area of wine production”, “grape varieties”, and “wine authenticity”. No gender differences were found in knowledge and previous experience with PGI wines of the prefecture of Drama, while for four out of 17 terroir elements that consumers were seeking information of in their online search, gender differences were observed: Place attachment, vineyard terrain, winery landscape architecture, and grape harvesting. Results are discussed and provide suggestions for terroir-based marketing. Results provide insight to consumer behaviour and may lead wineries to implement programs for wine tourism and education on wine terroir characteristics and wine choice connected to gastronomy.

Abstract:
In this study, HPLC-DAD rapid analysis of phenols in wine samples was performed. The recording was performed at different wavelengths: phenolic acid (254nm), flavan-3-ols and stilbene (280nm), flavonoids (340nm) and anthocyanins (520nm). In selected wines, the concentrations of the following compounds were determined and expressed in mg/l of wine. The isolated derivatives were: hydroxybenzoic acids, derivatives of caffeic, ferulic, syringic, and vanillic acids, catechin (flavanol), rutin, myricetin and quercetin (flavonols), and the stilbene derivative-resveratrol. The properties and quantities of phenolic compounds in organic wines were investigated. The results show the content of phenolic compounds in organic wines do not differ qualitatively and quantitatively from those in conventional wines. Wine samples have shown good antioxidative activity according to both DPPH and FRAP analysis, which indicates the good antioxidative potential and high antioxidant concentration in tested wines. Cabernet Sauvignon wines have shown better radical scavenging activity than Merlot, especially when the DPPH test was considered.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was the influence of yeasts on the production of red wines from the wine region of Vinica. The research was conducted on three grape varieties, cultivated in 3 different micro locations, each of which has its own unique characteristics and different altitudes. The three grape varieties were included: Vranec (cultivated in the area of Krshla, Vinica, at an altitude of 400m), Frankovka (cultivated in the area of Baltaci, Vinica, at an altitude of 520m) and Merlot (cultivated in Dragobrashte, Vinica, at an altitude of 540m ). The main goal of the research is to define the effect of the yeast on the quality of young wines. The indigenous types of yeast already present in the grapes (wild yeasts) and the commercial types from the Saccharomyces cerevisiae family which were isolated for use in international production of red wines of average tannin value (SELECTYS® LA DÉLICIEUSE) were applied. The research of the wines was carried out in the Wine Institute at the State Phytosanitary Laboratory in Skopje(North Macedonia) and involved examination of the wine quality parameters such micro and macro wine elements with ICP/MS and FOSS WINESCAN, parameters for alcohol, sugar, total acids, volatile acids, pH, total/volatile acids. This research gave insight of the correlation between samples of the wine and their parameters. It was further expanded with parameters for micro and macro wine elements which also shows the correlation of the wine samples. The wine region of Vinica is a developing region of great potential and this is the first step to presenting a vision for wine development in the region.

Abstract:
Based on a comprehensive study of the physical and chemical parameters of red wine materials for sparkling wines, including the composition of phenolic compounds and chromatic color characteristics, the feasibility of using additional physical and chemical indicators in the evaluation of wine materials intended for the production of red sparkling wines is scientifically justified.

Abstract:
This study aimed to determine the phenolic compound content, in vitro antioxidative potential, and cytotoxic effects of four red wine samples: a commercial (V) and three clonal wines (V1, V2, and V3). LC/MS-MS, cyclic voltammetry, and MTT assay techniques were employed for this purpose. Results revealed that all wines were rich in phenolic compounds. Clonal wines outperformed the commercial ones in most phenolic compounds (except myricetin). Notably, V2 and V3 showed the highest levels of gallic acid, catechin, and epicatechin. Among them, V3 exhibited superior antioxidative activity. The MTT assay demonstrated stronger cytotoxic effects of the wine samples on pancreas (Bx-PC3) and colon (HT29) carcinoma cells (47% to 16% and 27% to 7% compared to control, respectively) than on the normal lung fibroblasts (MRC-5) cell line (106% to 77%). It can be concluded that HT29 cells were more sensitive than Bx-PC3 cells. Finally, both clonal and commercial wines serve as valuable sources of polyphenolic compounds, which could have a significant role in preventing cancer and diseases related to oxidative stress.

Abstract:
Romanian wine producers/sellers face today – as in any other European (market) economy – challenges specific to such merchandise as alcoholic beverages, of which wines are a part, which, unlike (almost) any other type of product, can destroy consumers and therefore alter the very fabric of consumption process and mechanisms. These consumption limitations take their toll on any wine producer (or seller)’s capacity of profit maximising and can only add to the effects of a powerful foreign competition – which, in Romania, is more than ‘able’ to monopolise selling of most expensive wines –, and of the very reality Romania is (in relative terms) so poor a country that average level of consumers’ revenues simply cannot ‘insure’ – not for all, that is – profit maximising concept turning into reality. For all these reasons, a price strategy in the Romanian wine market is both indispensable and challenging.

Abstract:
The fruit wines from blueberry were made by microvinification procedure. Wines were produced in the absence or presence of sugar and/or enzymatic preparation glycosidase (EPG). Selected phenolic acids were quantified using UPLC/MS-MS analysis. Total phenolic content (TPC) was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Also, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) methods were applied. The α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of blueberry wines was also investigated. Wines made with addition of sugar and EPG showed the best results. Phenolic profile and biological activity of blueberry wine depended from microvinification procedure which was used in the production.

Abstract:
Several grape varieties and red wines were found to contain large concentration of phenolic compounds which work as antioxidant in-vitro and in-vivo. Wastes from wine production contain antioxidants in large amounts, between 2-6% on dry material basis. Red wines but also white wines were found to prevent lipid peroxidation of turkey muscle tissues stored at 5oC. The antioxidant reaction of flavonoids found in red wines against lipid peroxidation were found to depend on the structure of the molecule. Red wine flavonoids containing an orthodihydroxy structure around the B ring were found highly active against LDL and membrane lipid peroxidation. The antioxidant activity of red wine polyphenols were also found to be dependent on the catalyzer used. In the presence of H2O2-activated myoglobin, the inhibition efficiency was malvidin 3-glucoside>catechin>malvidin>resveratol. However, in the presence of an iron redox cycle catalyzer, the order of effectiveness was resveratol>malvidin 3-glucoside = malvidin>catechin. Differences in protein binding were found to affect antioxidant activity in inhibiting LDL oxidation. A model protein such as BSA, was investigated on the antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds, grape extracts, and red wines in a lecithin-liposome model system. Ferulic acid followed by malvidin and rutin were the most efficient in inhibiting both lipid and protein oxidation. Catechin, a flavonal found in red-wines in relatively high concentration was found to inhibit myoglobin catalyzed linoleate membrane lipid peroxidation at a relatively very low concentration. This effect was studied by the determination of the by-products generated from linoleate during oxidation. The study showed that hydroperoxides are catalytically broken down, not to an alcohol but most probably to a non-radical adduct. The ability of wine-phenolics to reduce iron and from complexes with metals were also demonstrated. Low concentration of wine phenolics were found to inhibit lipoxygenase type II activity. An attempt to understand the bioavailability in humans of antocyanins from red wine showed that two antocyanins from red wine were found unchanged in human urine. Other antocyanins seems to undergo molecular modification. In hypercholesterolemic hamsters, aortic lipid deposition was significantly less in animals fed diets supplemented with either catechin or vitamin E. The rate of LDL accumulation in the carotid arteries was also significantly lower in the catechin and vitamin E animal groups. These results suggested a novel mechanism by which wine phenolics are associated with decreased risk of coronary heart diseases. This study proves in part our hypothesis that the "French Paradox" could be explained by the action of the antioxidant effects of phenolic compounds found at high concentration in red wines. The results of this study argue that it is in the interest of public health to increase the consumption of dietary plant falvonoids. Our results and these from others, show that the consumption of red wine or plant derived polyphenolics can change the antioxidant tone of animal and human plasma and its isolated components towards oxidative reactions. However, we need more research to better understand bioavailability and the mechanism of how polyphenolics affect health and disease.
