Section 1 surveys David Brown's work on religious enchantment and imagination through the arts. Section 2 takes in literary criticism's turn to Shakespeare and religion. Late plays, Last plays, Romances and Tragicomedies are the most commonly used labels adopted by critics to describe and classify Pericles, Cymbeline, The Winter’s Tale and The Tempest. These four plays were written by William Shakespeare between the years 1608-1611. Why are these works usually grouped together? Starting with Edward Dowden, several critics have observed that themes and motifs are repeated throughout each play. All four plays’ storyline follow a 3-steps pattern composed as follows: separation, quests and reunion. The present study aims to investigate if these plays are four di

It has been suggested that William Shakespeare was a closet Catholic. His play, The Winter's Tale, may be an insight into these hidden religious beliefs. The theories are given credence when the figure of Hermione is examined as both a parallel Mary figure and a representation of the Catholic Church within England prior to Elizabeth's ascension to the throne. Echoes of the repression of Catholicism by the power structure of 16th century England can be seen in Hermione's death and the later resurrection of her character.

Such readings, mirroring critical practices in history, will loosely be called “counterfactual” readings. The key question to ask is not why tragedies are no longer being written (by writers), but why tragedies are no longer being felt (by readers). History raises political questions by nature; however, it is also important to look at the political dimensions of Shakespeare’s fictional rulers. This dissertation examines early modern literary engagements with the rhetorical and ethical dimensions of law reform. One of the most important mechanisms of social regulation in late-Elizabethan and early-Jacobean England, law reform was a matter of, first, the “perfection” of the organization and expression of existing laws, legal instruments, and legal processes. However counter-intuitively, these officially-sponsored reforms were calculated to prevent more radical innovations that would generate “inconveniences,” systemic contradictions and uncertainties that threatened the law’s ability
