Abstract:
The coastal and offshore waters of Southwest Greenland are internationally important winter quarters for seabirds. We crudely estimate a minimum of 3.5 million seabirds using the region in winter, mainly from Arctic Canada, Greenland and Svalbard, with smaller numbers also from Alaska, Iceland, mainland Norway and Russia. The most numerous species are Common Eider Somateria mollissima, King Eider S. spectabilis, Brünnich's Guillemot Uria lomvia and Little Auk Alle alle. The most immediate threat to the seabirds in Southwest Greenland is hunting, and current levels of usage of the Greenland breeding populations of Brünnich's Guillemot and Common Eider are considered unsustainable. Conservation measures are required for these populations.

Abstract:
From the Pioneer Company of 1847 to the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, approximately 60,000 Mormon pioneers made the journey from Winter Quarters to the Salt Lake Valley. Although some years have received more attention, every footprint placed on the prairie is part of the epic pioneer story. This thesis examines the major challenges and characteristics of the 1848 Mormon pioneers crossing of the plains. The sacrifices and contributions of the 1848 pioneers are as significant to the legacy of the Mormon westward migration as any other year. In order to explore, develop, and explain the thesis statement, this work includes five chapters. Chapter I: Introduction provides the historical setting of the 1848 Mormon pioneers. Chapter II: The L.D.S migration of 1848 in historical context. Chapter III: The general characteristics of the 1848 Mormon migration. Chapter IV: Relief efforts. Chapter V: Conclusion. The primary evidence for this thesis comes from journals of the 1848 Mormon pioneers. This research has discovered that the 1848 pioneers had the largest company in Mormon pioneer history. It is also the only year that each member of the First Presidency led a pioneer company across the plains. The companies' immense size coupled with insufficient provisions and an unusually dry spring required sacrifice and cooperation. Topics researched include: route and distances traveled, role of women, expressions of devotion, livestock issues, Indian relations, sickness, injury, and death. The 1848 pioneers received significant relief from 1847 migrants, who returned to the trail to assist.

Abstract:
The Pulitzer Prize in Music has been associated with excellence in American composition since 1943, when it first honored William Schuman for his Secular Cantata No. 2: A Free Song. In the years that followed, this award has recognized America's most eminent composers, placing many of their works in the standard orchestral, chamber and solo repertoire. Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Walter Piston and Elliott Carter are but a few of the composers who have been honored by this most prestigious award. Several of these Pulitzer Prize-winning composers have made significant contributions to the solo and chamber music repertories of the bassoon, an instrument that had a limited repertoire until the beginning of the twentieth century. The purpose of this project is to draw attention to the fact that America's most honored composers have enlarged and enriched the repertoire of the solo bassoon and bassoon quartet. The works that will be discussed in this document include: Quartettino for Four Bassoons (1939) - William Schuman, Three Inventions for Solo Bassoon (1962) - George Perle, Canzonetta (1962) - John Harbison, Metamorphoses for Bassoon Solo (1991) - Leslie Bassett and “How like pellucid statues, Daddy. Or like a . . . an engine” (1994) - John Corigliano. Each chapter will include a brief biography of the composer, a historical perspective of where that composition lies in relation to their other works, background information about the work, a formal analysis and suggestions for performance.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT

Four Seasons for Ensemble of Chinese Instruments: Dizi, Suona, Gaoying Sheng, Zhongyin Sheng, Percussion, Pipa, Zheng, Erhu and Zhonghu was created in 2012-2012. Loosely inspired by Basho's haiku, Four Seasons comprises four movements.

The composition is characterized by the application of Asian principles of heterophony and single tone timbre with the context of Western contemporary music. I explore for the first time the application of Chou Wen-chung's variable modes theory. In addition, Four Seasons are suggested by twelve I Ching hexagrams corresponding to the twelve months.

Each movement of Four Seasons features one soloist or small groups of soloists, as in concerto grosso. Setting up different instrumental combinations in four movements, the piece also uses timbre and sonority to depict the vivid colors of the four seasons.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Anna Botsford and John Henry Comstock's return to Ithaca on August 4, 1908. The Comstock's new official quarters in Roberts Hall at Cornell University were of great interest to them. At last, Henry had a large laboratory with ample windows, with no sashes to bring a bar across the field of the microscope. The insect collections were placed on the same floor as the lecture room, which is a great convenience. In contrast, Anna's experience was not so gratifying. The Nature Study Department was housed in the two west rooms on the fourth floor. The window in her room was so high that one could see out only when standing. Nevertheless, Anna had shelves for her books and a roll-top desk, which seemed a luxury. It was during the winter of 1909 that she conceived the idea of writing her Handbook of Nature Study. The chapter then looks at the expansion of the Comstock Publishing Company in December of 1909.

Abstract:
Bohai Bay is a major offshore oil and gas production area in China, a number of oil and gas fields are located there. The offshore facilities in this area are subject to ice loads in the winter, and the ice loads on the platform are one of the major concerns in the structural design in this area. The loads include ice impact, ice-induced-vibration and floating ice influence to the offshore operations. Compared to the loads combination of wind, wave and current, the ice load may be the governing loading condition in the structural design. The ice induced vibration to the production facilities and the living quarters may also seriously affect safety and the health of the operating personnel. This paper briefly introduces the development history of the ice-resistance platform design in Bohai Bay, and based on previous experience, the ice loads calculation method, the structure configuration of primary steel, the appurtenance arrangement and the conical structure at ice abrasive zones are discussed to optimize the ice-resistance capability. The material selection and different vibration mitigation methods are also discussed in this paper. Although significant progress has been made on the ice-resistance platform design, the problems still remain such as the floating ice accumulation around well slots. Further study on ice-induced vibration is necessary. This paper summarizes the main issues and challenges in the ice-resistance platforms and proposes the key points for future development. This paper also provides helpful references to the design and optimization of the offshore platform in an ice active environment.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is concerned with analysis of dynamic behavior of an Euler-Bernoulli beam resting on an elastic foundation. The beam is assumed to be subjected to a uniformly distributed lateral static load, have an initial quarter-sine shape deflection. At one end, the beam is assumed to be restrained by a pin, while at the other end, the beam is assumed to be restrained by a torsional and a translational linear spring. The beam is modeled by a nonlinear partial differential equation where the nonlinearity enters the governing equation through the beam axial force. In the static case, because of a unique feature of governing equation, the analysis was carried out using the theory of linear differential equations, but takes into account the effect of actual deflection on the induced axial thrust. In the dynamic case, stability analysis of the beam is carried out by calculating the nonlinear frequencies of free vibration of the beam about its static equilibrium configuration. The assumed mode method is used to discretize and find an equivalent nonlinear initial value problem. Then the harmonic balance is used to obtain an approximate solution to the nonlinear oscillator described by the equivalent initial value problem. The analyses of results were carried out for a selected range of values of the system parameters: foundation elastic stiffness, lateral load, and maximum beam edge deflection. In the static case the results are presented as characteristic curves showing the variation of the beam static deflection and associated bending moment distribution with each of the above system parameters. In the dynamic case, the presented characteristic curves show the variation of the nonlinear natural frequency corresponding to the first and the second modes over a range of each of the above system parameters.
