During the period of approximately forty years after 1898, a small number of Norwegian women chose to over-winter with their men folk who were trappers in Svalbard. Some were primarily engaged in a housekeeping role, while some were actively involved in hunting and trapping activities. Diaries and contemporary newspaper accounts provide interesting insights into the experiences and the perceptions of these women. This paper provides brief, but illustrative, examples drawn from transcripts of original material. Translations are by the author.

Bactericera cockerelli, a psyllid, is a major agricultural pest affecting potatoes, tomatoes and other crops through feeding damage and transmission of the bacterial pathogen Liberibacter solanacearum, which causes zebra chip disease. This pest, originating from the Western USA, Mexico and Central America, poses a threat in its native regions and in New Zealand where it has been introduced. Given the current distribution, B. cockerelli could establish itself in Southern and Central Europe and areas with mild winters in Northern Europe. As part of the campaign to increase readiness in northern regions, a near commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution was identified for the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV); and used to assess the suitability of commercially available winter tires for operational deployment. Initial performance evaluations conducted during the winters of 2020 and 2021 demonstrated and quantified significant improvements to traction and handling on a variety of winter surfaces. Lake Arakhley is located within the Lake Baikal basin in Eastern Siberia, Russia. The area is characterized by continental subarctic climate with considerate diurnal temperature range, long cold dry winters and short hot summers with more precipitation occurring during the latter half of the summer. Climatic shifts in high water years and low water years result in morphometric changes in the lake and in the chemical and physical parameters of the ecosystem.
