Abstract A descriptive petrographic study was carried out on the chromitites (LG-6 to UG-3a) of a single borehole from the Winterveld Chrome Mine, Eastern BC, along with analysis by both EPMA and LA-ICP-MS of the PGE contents of base metal sulphides (BMS) found within these layers. EPMA measurements were optimized to measure trace amounts of PGE by increased probe current and counting time, yielding very low detection limits for this method (12 to 38 ppm). However, analytical error proved to be very high (over ~30%) in samples that showed PGE values below 100 ppm. Also, the possibility of interference on PGE spectra by other elements, especially on Rh, is high. Therefore, these measurements can only be considered semi-quantitative indicators of elemental PGE concentration. Our findings confirmed that pentlandite of the BC chromitites contains Pd and Rh, probably in solid solution. Pt was found in discrete minerals (braggite, cooperite) throughout the sequence, and Ru, Ir and Os were found as early-stage minerals such as laurite, associated with chromite rather than sulphide. The PPGE increase upwards in the chromitite layers relative to the IPGE. An immiscible sulphide phase contributed to collection of the PGE in the chromitites of the MG-4 and above. The chromitites of the LG-6 to MG-1 show less evidence of hosting an immiscible sulphide phase, and pentlandite of these layers does not appear to host Rh, although Pd was found. Although this borehole is located only 1.5 km away from the centre of the Steelpoort Fault Zone, a possible feeder zone for the BC, large-scale disruption of the chromitite layers was not observed. An intrusive pegmatoidal pyroxenite was found to occur beneath the LG-6, and contained PGE-bearing sulphides, although the origin of this mineralization is most likely from the LG-6 chromitite itself. A sulphide vein occurring in silicate was also analysed and was found to be PGE-deficient compared to the sulphides of the chromitite layers.

A picture of a strangely empty and disrupted man-made landscape (William Kentridge, pp. 349–350 in Mbembe and Nuttall), balanced by a dense but also personless urban scene (by the same author, pp. 35–6 in the same text). … The slippage between conventional social scientific terms of runaway urbanization, the teeming human vitality of African cities, and the elusiveness of the titles, sayings and images of these three books, opens up the rich vein for research and writing into which these authors work their ways. Johannesburg. Kinshasa. Pikine (Dakar). Winterveld (a South African urban area outside Pretoria). Douala. Jeddah. The books reviewed here are based on detailed field research in six particular cities. They all juxtapose the categories of ‘metropolis’ and ‘modernity’ to the category of ‘Africa’, all positing the anomaly this move may represent in the categorical social scientific mind. The subtitles immediately indicate a different starting point from the analytics of population, geography and governance. With an approach through ‘tales’ (De Boeck and Plissart) and ‘reading the city’ (Mbembe and Nuttall), the authors indicate an alternative intellectual reach. They start from visual imagery, the language arts and the social mediations through which the lives lived in urban ‘modern’ Africa are expressed, communicated, understood, configured and conserved. Their aims evoked in my mind the modern art – rather than the analytics – of other cities. So here we have ‘circulation’ and vehicles as symbols and sounds without too much attention to traffic (the Lagos ‘go slow’; the accidents); ‘bodies’ without much attention to food or toilet needs or aging; ‘authority’ evaded or permeating rather than personified in mayors, town councils and multitudes of other officials and employees. In the ether of the invisible, what circulates are symbols and expressions; what emanates from bodies is sexual tension, aesthetic sensibility and physical vulnerability (‘bodies in danger’, De Boeck and Plissart, p. 117); what bears down oppressively is constraint and neglect of all kinds. In brief, what strikes the perceptive mind is precisely what bursts out of the conventional forms and has not yet taken a newly conventionalized shape. Through this orientation, all three books bring the humanities and artistic sensibilities to the question of the spirits, souls, inspirations, dangers, images and memories that inhabit the crowded spaces between buildings and people, insects and people, people and people.

The Tumelong Hospice in Winterveldt, North West Province, South Africa, is a residential care backup for a home based care program. It is unique in that it is run by a staff of lay caregivers trained in basic palliative care with the support of one professional nurse and a visiting doctor. The hospice experienced criticism from some professionals who feel that lay caregivers are not able to run a residential hospice service. Past experience in Winterveldt has shown that lay caregivers can deliver good care with appropriate training and backup support. A literature review revealed that little research has been done in palliative care in Africa. The aim of this study was to determine patients' experience of care in Tumelong Hospice, and whether the standard of care is acceptable to the people who utilise the serivce.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is about the practical theological challenges faced by the AFM of SA Fountain of life congregation in the Winterveldt community. The Fountain of life congregation has minimal involvement in the community of Winterveldt, a community plagued by numerous life threatening plights. The congregation is in a survival mode after stagnating for a number of years and with serious challenges of declining or even facing possible extinction. This study's goal is to develop a practical theological theory, strategy and process which the AFM of SA Fountain of life congregation would be inspired to implement in order to contribute towards arresting theological, social, economical and moral degradation in the community of Winterveldt. The researcher employed a practical theological methodology and explored areas that are vital for the answering of the research problem, "What can be done in the Fountain of life congregation to maximize the participation of all members to serve the community of Winterveldt as well as the larger society?" It is hypothesized that Practical Theology will give the AFM of SA Fountain of life guidance and equip this faith community and its leaders theologically to consider their vocation, to develop a practical theological ecclesiology, a way to be the true, faithful and effective local church which is the salt and light of the world, including Winterveldt. The study explored the "world" in which Fountain of life finds itself, in terms of its contextual as well as the congregation's identity analysis. The normative aspects of being a missional church which covered the missional identity, empowerment and involvement of laity, and missional leadership were elaborated, while spiritual discernment with areas particular to Fountain of life received attention in the normative aspects of spiritual discernment. It is recommended that the identity of Fountain of life be grounded in the mission of the Trinitarian God (missio Dei of the Trinitarian God). The missionary identity and character of Fountain of life should be built and developed upon the eight dominant patterns found in a missional church. The researcher strongly encourages the Fountain of life congregation to employ the missional leadership strategies while engaging in a total involvement leadership style, which integrates high concern for getting the task completed and a high concern for good people relationship. The leadership of Fountain of life is further encouraged to use the suggested laity empowerment strategies in order to empower, develop, and involve the laity. Missional transformation can only succeed if the laity is empowered and committed to deal with new realities. Leadership is key in engaging the laity. The pastor and the leadership of Fountain of life must teach, educate, lead, and engage the congregation, and also partner with other communities of faith and organizations especially the South African Partnership for Missional Churches (SAPMC) to succeed. Fountain of life should practice missional praxis theology, a holistic theological model that describes the methodology for congregations to develop their own contextual ecclesiology within the parameters of God‘s overall design for the Church.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die navorsing handel oor die prakties-teologiese uitdagings van die Apostoliese Geloofsending (AGS) in Suid-Afrika se Fountain of life gemeente in Winterveldt (Tswane metropolitaanse area). Fountain of life het minimale invloed in die Winterveldt gemeenskap, 'n gemeenskap wat gebuk gaan onder baie ernstige sosiale probleme. Die gemeente is net besig om te oorleef, dit is stagnant en staar agteruitgang of algehele ondergang in die gesig. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is the most common nutritional disorder in the developing world. A large number of children under the age of 5 years do not reach their developmental potential, IDA and iron deficiency being well documented risk factors. IDA has been shown to be an important cause for decreased attention span, reduced alertness and learning difficulties in both young children and adolescents. South Africa has a growing burden of anaemia and iron deficiency and the most affected areas are the poor communities. There is vast evidence on the negative effects of iron deficiency to a child's developing brain from studies done internationally but limited data on the subject in South Africa, despite the huge burden of iron deficiency. We investigated the association between IDA and school performance and intelligence and also determined the local prevalence of IDA in the Winterveldt region, North of Tshwane, South Africa. METHODS: Three primary schools from Winterveldt were sampled. All subjects with parental consent were screened for anaemia using Hemocue 201+ Hb meter (n=194).
