Abstract:
In November 2012, Wipro Ltd., a NYSE listed IT Services company, announced its plan to demerge the non-IT businesses into an unlisted entity — Wipro Enterprises. The case highlights the governance, valuation, and ethical issues surrounding the demerger. Shareholders were given three options to choose from. But, in reality, they had no choice but to exchange Wipro Enterprises shares that they would receive after the demerger with Wipro Ltd shares because Wipro Enterprises would remain unlisted. The case asks the student to analyze the restructuring from an investor’s perspective. The case is especially interesting in that it provides a platform to discuss governance issues in the context of a familyowned public firm. It demonstrates how the preferences of majority shareholders can affect the wealth of minority shareholders.

Abstract:
The Wipro Consulting Services (WCS) case charts the evolution of the consulting initiative within Wipro Technologies; the strategic choices the management made during this evolution and the challenges facing the firm once it consolidated the various consulting initiatives to set up Wipro Consulting Services in 2008. The case deals with several questions facing the leadership team, such as the competencies to develop to move up the value chain in delivering consulting services and the extent to which WCS should rely on the parent firm (Wipro) for its next phase of growth. The case seeks to deal with the issues of new business creation and growth in large organizations. It invites students to explore the domain of technology consulting, the delivery model firms pursue in this industry, and the challenges a firm with corporate centre in an emerging market faces when it seeks to establish itself as a global player. In particular, it also aims to open up discussion on the advantages, disadvantages, and challenges a firm encounters when encouraging new business initiatives while retaining tight co-ordination when this initiative enters growth phase.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background The assessment of the endometrial receptivity at the time of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is one of the key factors for success of all ART procedures. Aim To assess, if 3D and 3D power Doppler assessment of endometrial receptivity before giving hCG, helps improving pregnancy rates in superovulation with IUI cycles. Settings and Design A prospective randomized study of 2500 cycles of IUI was done over a period of twelve months for pre-hCG endometrial assessment. Method Endometrial assessment was done on Voluson 730 Expert, (Wipro GE) using transvaginal multifrequency volume probe 5 to 9 MHz. When follicles and endometrium were considered mature by 2D US and color Doppler, 3D and 3D power Doppler assessment of the endometrium was done before giving hCG. These values were evaluated for conception and nonconception groups. Results Conception rates were higher, when endometrial volume was between 3 and 7 cc. In our study, we have found endometrial FI > 20 and endometrial VFI > 40 as most optimum. Conclusions 3D ultrasound is accurate for volume assessment of endometrium. 3D and 3D PD, when used with 2D US and color Doppler for pre-hCG endometrial assessment, it would definitely improve implantation rates in IUI cycles.

Abstract:

The Asian crisis of 1990, the US accounting scandals like that of Enron, World com, Adelphia, European scandals of Ahold and the present economic crunch all have enforced the importance of effective corporate governance mechanism and global GAAP. All these activities have forced the development of some universal reporting standards i.e. IFRS. The benefits which Indian companies hope to reap after IFRS adoption are numerous. But no benefits can be drawn without facing some crucial challenges. The current shaken market confidence globally may present significant challenges to organizations. Adoption of IFRS could result in an added considerable volatility in reported earnings and some performance specific measures like EPS and P/E Ratio. Entities will have to clarify reasons for this IFRS related volatility apart from other macroeconomic factors. This paper talks about some such challenges and impact of IFRS implementation in some sectors of the Indian economy. The sectors mainly touched upon are that of retail, technology, telecom and power. The paper closes with two small cases of JK Paper and Wipro who have gone for the adoption of IFRS. The cases will aid in understanding the implementation issues of IFRS.

Abstract:
Subject area Strategic management, IT strategy, Business & IT Consulting, International Business. Study level/applicability PGDM and Executive programmes. Case overview Cognizant Technology Solutions, one of the giants in the Indian information technology (IT) industry, has been continually evolving new strategies and business models to cater to the global IT demand. Starting as an in-house technology unit of Duns & Bradstreet, the case highlights the various pioneering and transformative decisions taken by Cognizant to become one among the Fortune 500 companies of the world. However, despite its supremacy in the global market, they are facing tremendous competition from the other IT giants – TCS, Infosys and Wipro, to name a few. Also, the expansion of global IT players like Accenture and International Business Machines (IBM) in India is making matters worse. This intense competition, when juxtaposed with commoditization and price sensitivity on behalf of the IT demand, makes sustainability a big question mark. The million-dollar question remains “How should Cognizant strategize to ensure inorganic growth in the price-sensitive industry?” Expected learning – outcomes The case highlights the market dynamics of the Indian IT industry – from its humble beginning as an attraction for low-cost labour to being one of the strategic outsourcing geographies of the IT sector – and thereby categorically points out the significance of continuous evolution on behalf of the IT firms to stay alive in this client-driven industry. The students are expected to analyze the IT industry of India, keeping in mind its vulnerabilities – price sensitivity, dependence on developed economies and intense competition – and relate the same to different strategies incorporated by Cognizant to remain one of the powerhouses of the Indian IT industry. Abstract:
The WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center (WIPO Center) is a neutral, international and non-profit dispute resolution provider that offers time- and cost-efficient alternative dispute resolution (ADR) options. The mediation, arbitration and expert determination procedures offered by the WIPO Center are widely recognized as particularly appropriate for technology, entertainment and other disputes involving intellectual property. With twenty years of experience handling such disputes, about 40% of the WPO Center's cases involve patents, and 33 % concern information and communication technology. Effective on June 1, 2014, the WIPO Center amended its Mediation, (Expedited) Arbitration and Expert Determination Rules. Informed by WIPO case experience and the global evolution of ADR practices, the new WIPO Rules introduce several novelties, notably with a view to multiparty arbitration and emergency relief. In a separate development, the WIPO Center recently made available tailored model agreements that companies involved in the telecom industry may use to refer a dispute concerning the fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms to WIPO Mediation and (Expedited) Arbitration. Aiming to facilitate cost- and time-effective FRAND adjudication, these model agreements were developed in consultation with patent law, standardization and arbitration experts from various jurisdictions, including the Secretariat of the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI).
