Abstract:
Today it is hard to imagine an industry or an application that uses steel wire ropes in which the application of a magnetic flaw detector would be unsuitable. The ropes of loading cranes, mine hoists, ropeways, cable-stayed bridges, flare stacks, antenna masts, overhead power transmission lines, and other installations are not only subject to regular inspections (Sukhorukov and Mironenko 2003; Kotelnikov and Sukhorukov 2006; Sukhorukov et al. 2014), but the appropriate guidelines for these rope types are now described in industrial standards such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard for crane ropes, ISO 4309 (ISO 2017); the European Standards (EN) standard for ropeways, EN 12927 (BSI 2019); and the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) standards for offshore ropes, IMCA LR 004, IMCA HSSE 023, and IMCA M 197 Rev.1 (IMCA 2018). This paper examines how magnetic flux leakage testing (MFL) is used as the basis for an automated wire rope condition monitoring system, in which the human factor is completely removed.

Abstract:
The current research aims to study the effect of static loads on concrete beams strengthened by wire rope. Each beam was subjected to a central concentrated load with an average loading speed of 1 kN/min. The use of steel wire rope has been suggested as a new economical technique to strengthen and rehabilitate reinforced concrete beams, as well as to support the CFRP used in strengthening. The best results were obtained when using either CFRP and wire rope together, or wire rope on its own. It was found that strengthening by CFRP and wire rope increased the flexural strength, hardness, and toughness, and decreased the maximum deflection. Furthermore, the use of wire ropes with CFRP increased the splitting strength and prevented the concrete cover separation between CFRP and concrete. The use of wire rope is a new technique that significantly enhances the performance of concrete in flexure. Using a combination of wire ropes and CFRP, and wire rope on its own showed an increase in stiffness up to about 135.24% and 72.13%, and a reduction in ultimate deflection up to about 70.31% and 49.1%, respectively as compared with control beams. Wire ropes can be used in various forms to resist flexure, shear, and torsion stresses due to ease of formation per required shape. Moreover, its efficiency can be enhanced by increasing the rope’s diameter or reducing the spacing between the wrapped rope’s segments. This renders strengthening by wire rope a new, efficient, and economic technology. © Copyright 2018 JASET, International Scholars and Researchers Association

Abstract:
Background Wire-loop lesion (WL) is one of the active lesions of lupus nephritis (LN). However, few reports have focused on the clinicopathological relationships of WL to serological immune abnormality and renal prognosis. Methods We enrolled 126 Japanese LN patients subjected to renal biopsy in 11 hospitals from 2000 to 2018. In patients with class III or IV of the International Society of Nephrology/Renal Pathology Society classification, we retrospectively compared clinicopathological findings between those with WL (WL+ group) and without WL (WL– group) to detect factors associated with WL. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate of <60 mL/min/1.73m2 for more than three months. We also compared these findings between those with CKD (CKD+ group) and without CKD (CKD– group) at the last visit to investigate factors associated with renal prognosis. Results Of 126 patients, 100 (79.4%) were classified as class III or IV. WL was found in 36 (36.0%) of them. Although the renal function did not differ, the WL+ group had a higher titre of serum anti-dsDNA antibodies and lower serum complement 3 levels than the WL– group. Linear regression analysis revealed a significant association only between anti-dsDNA antibodies and WL (β = 0.27, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.001–0.100, p = 0.01). Of these patients, 69 were tracked for 59.6 ± 55.1 months. Kaplan–Meier analysis showed no difference in renal prognosis between these groups. Next, the CKD+ group included 15 (22.1%) patients. They were older and had higher frequencies of hypertension and hyperuricaemia, serum creatinine (Cr) level, glomerulosclerosis, interstitial inflammation, interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy than the CKD– group at the time of renal biopsy. The frequency of WL was not significantly different. Cox regression analysis revealed significant associations of CKD with hypertension, hyperuricaemia, serum Cr level at the time of renal biopsy clinically and with tubular atrophy histologically. Conclusions WL was associated with serum anti-dsDNA antibodies but not with renal prognosis, suggesting that WL reflects immune abnormality but is not an independent factor predictive of renal prognosis in LN.

Abstract:
The criminal association was a criminal offense of the Joint Plan and Conspiracy, or a special form of Crime against Peace, which was highlighted as such in the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials. In the recent practice of international criminal courts, this institute is used in a certain way, but its function is often subordinated to political abuses. By labeling certain political regimes as a “criminal association” by the so-called international political elites are provided with a wide margin of maneuver to justify their “humanitarian interventions” which are the consequence of a common criminal goal. From the middle of the 20th century until today, it is possible to identify violations of international law that occurred as a result of the activities of a criminal association, which continues with increased intensity. If the covert activities of real criminal associations continue, the main outcome will not be the achievement of world peace, but hegemony. In order to prevent this tendency, it is necessary to redefine the place of the Criminal Association in international criminal law, to point out the permanent cases of their actions, their subjects and the ways in which these same subjects avoid responsibility.

Abstract:
Abstract Response to treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) varies considerably between patients. The International SSRI Pharmacogenomics Consortium (ISPC) was formed with the primary goal of identifying genetic variation that may contribute to response to SSRI treatment of major depressive disorder. A genome-wide association study of 4-week treatment outcomes, measured using the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD-17), was performed using data from 865 subjects from seven sites. The primary outcomes were percent change in HRSD-17 score and response, defined as at least 50% reduction in HRSD-17. Data from two prior studies, the Pharmacogenomics Research Network Antidepressant Medication Pharmacogenomics Study (PGRN-AMPS) and the Sequenced Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression (STAR*D) study, were used for replication, and a meta-analysis of the three studies was performed (N=2394). Although many top association signals in the ISPC analysis map to interesting candidate genes, none were significant at the genome-wide level and the associations were not replicated using PGRN-AMPS and STAR*D data. Top association results in the meta-analysis of response included single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the HPRTP4 (hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase pseudogene 4)/VSTM5 (V-set and transmembrane domain containing 5) region, which approached genome-wide significance (P=5.03E−08) and SNPs 5’ upstream of the neuregulin-1 gene, NRG1 (P=1.20E−06). NRG1 is involved in many aspects of brain development, including neuronal maturation and variations in this gene have been shown to be associated with increased risk for mental disorders, particularly schizophrenia. Replication and functional studies of these findings are warranted.

Abstract:
Background: Associations between the built environment and physical activity (PA) may vary by sociodemographic factors. However, such evidence from international studies is limited. This study tested the moderating effects of sociodemographic factors on associations between perceived environment and self-reported total PA among adults from the International Prevalence Study. Methods: Between 2002 and 2003, adults from 9 countries (N = 10,258) completed surveys assessing total PA (International Physical Activity Questionnaire-short), perceived environment, and sociodemographics (age, gender, and education). Total PA was dichotomized as meeting/not meeting (a) high PA levels and (b) minimum PA guidelines. Logistic models tested environment by sociodemographic interactions (24 total). Results: Education and gender moderated the association between safety from crime and meeting high PA levels (interaction P < .05), with inverse associations found only among the high education group and men. Education and gender also moderated associations of safety from crime and the presence of transit stops with meeting minimum PA guidelines (interaction P < .05), with positive associations found for safety from crime only among women and presence of transit stops only among men and the high education group. Conclusions: The limited number of moderating effects found provides support for population-wide environment–PA associations. International efforts to improve built environments are needed to promote health-enhancing PA and maintain environmental sustainability.

Since 1964, the Declaration of Helsinki has been accepted internationally as the cornerstone for research ethics. As such it has been incorporated into a number of guidance documents for research undertaken on human subjects. In 1999, the American Medical Association put forward a proposal for wide-ranging revision of the document, which would significantly weaken the rights of research subjects and lower the standards for research on human subjects. This article discusses the probable effects of the most significant proposals for change and argues against them. It also urges nurses, especially those involved in research, to become involved in the international consultation currently being undertaken by the World Medical Association.

As with many professional areas in academia, Applied Linguistics is organised around national organisations, with its international structure being a loose confederation known as the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA). Given these diverse academic and structural arrangements, it should not be surprising if academics within different national associations were to cluster around different interests within the field. Abstract:
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a multifactorial disease with environmental and genetic determinants. The genetic determinants of CAD have previously been explored by the candidate gene approach. Recently, the data from the International HapMap Project and the development of dense genotyping chips have enabled us to perform genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on a large number of subjects without bias towards any particular candidate genes. In 2007, three chip-based GWAS simultaneously revealed the significant association between common variants on chromosome 9p21 and CAD. This association was replicated among other ethnic groups and also in a meta-analysis. Further investigations have detected several other candidate loci associated with CAD. The chip-based GWAS approach has identified novel and unbiased genetic determinants of CAD and these insights provide the important direction to better understand the pathogenesis of CAD and to develop new and improved preventive measures and treatments for CAD.

Abstract:
Electronic health records (EHRs) are a rich source of data for researchers, but extracting meaningful information out of this highly complex data source is challenging. Phecodes represent one strategy for defining phenotypes for research using EHR data. They are a high-throughput phenotyping tool based on ICD (International Classification of Diseases) codes that can be used to rapidly define the case/control status of thousands of clinically meaningful diseases and conditions. Phecodes were originally developed to conduct phenome-wide association studies to scan for phenotypic associations with common genetic variants. Since then, phecodes have been used to support a wide range of EHR-based phenotyping methods, including the phenotype risk score. This review aims to comprehensively describe the development, validation, and applications of phecodes and suggest some future directions for phecodes and high-throughput phenotyping.

Abstract:
Conference interpreting is a relatively recent and highly specialized branch of one of the oldest professions in human civilization. Since its inception at the Peace Conference of Versailles the profession has rapidly expanded: an ever increasing number of international and private organizations require interpreters for their meetings. Two main modes of interpreting are currently in use: consecutive and simultaneous interpretation. In consecutive interpretation speakers can talk freely for about 5 minutes and the interpreter gives a full rendering of what has been said after the speaker has finished. Simultaneous interpretation requires a technical installation comprising soundproof booths, headsets and microphones which enables interpreters to give a running interpretation. Both are complex techniques: all elements of the reception-assimilation-reproduction sequence need to be perfectly mastered. At the moment there are relatively few qualified professional conference interpreters. AIIC (Association Internationale d'Interprètes de Conférence), the only world-wide association of professional Conference interpreters, has around 2000 members in 68 countries. The Dutch language has acquired international status in the institutions of the European Community. Even today most Dutch interpreters work for the EC. Their professional outlook therefore depends on how the position of Dutch within the EC evolves.

Abstract:
Background The International Frontal Sinus Anatomy Classification (IFAC) was introduced to more accurately characterize ethmoid and frontal sinus pneumatization patterns. The prevalence of IFAC cells and their anatomic associations have not been described. Objective The goal was to examine the prevalence of IFAC cells and determine radiologic features associated with a low-lying anterior ethmoidal artery (LAEA). Methods Imaging of adult patients who underwent computed tomographies from January 2015 to March 2016 were retrospectively reviewed by using the IFAC classification. We also measured the distance from the skull base to the anterior ethmoidal artery (AEA), the height of the lateral lamella of the cribriform plate, and anterior-posterior diameter from the anterior wall of the frontal sinus to the skull base (APF). Patients with a history of sinus surgery, trauma, malignancy, or congenital anomaly were excluded. Statistical analysis was performed by using Pearson correlation coefficients and χ2 tests. Results A total of 95 patients met the inclusion criteria. There was a significant association between supraorbital ethmoid cells and an LAEA (p < 0.001), with a significant effect size (ϕ = 0.276, p = 0.007). An inverse relationship was observed between Keros type I classification I and an LAEA (p < 0.001), with a significant effect size (ϕ = -0.414, p = 0.000). Significant associations were found between the AEA distance from the skull base and the cribriform lateral lamella height (R = 0.576, p < 0.001). In addition, there was a significant association between the AEA distance from the skull base and the APF (R = 0.497, p < 0.001). Conclusion The presence of a supraorbital ethmoid cell and a wide APF were associated with an LAEA. There was a significant relationship between Keros type I classification and the AEA adjacent to the skull base. Delineation of these anatomic relationships may be helpful during endoscopic sinus surgery to avoid complications.

Abstract:
This article draws from a larger research project on the globalization of bankruptcy law that includes (1) a time-series analysis of all bankruptcy reforms worldwide from 1973 to 1998; (2) participation observation, several hundred interviews and documentary analysis of international financial institutions (IMF, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development), international professional associations (International Bar Association, International Federation of Insolvency Practitioners), and world governance organizations (OECD, U.N. Commission on International Trade Law); and (3) case studies of Indonesia, Korea, and China. The globalization of law is a negotiated process. Our research on international organizations and case studies of China, Indonesia, and South Korea indicates that negotiation of the global/local relationship varies by the vulnerability of a country to global forces. Nation-states vary (1) in their balance of power vis-à-vis global actors; and (2) in their social and cultural distance from the global. Yet even where the global/local gap is wide and the asymmetry of power is pronounced, local responses to global pressures are negotiated as much as imposed. Negotiating globalization relies on direct and mediated interactions by several types of intermediaries who translate global scripts into four kinds of outcomes. The impact of intermediaries in this process varies by the phase of the reform in which they participate. Finally, globalizing law proceeds through recursive cycles of lawmaking and law implementation.

Abstract:
ObjectivesSeveral studies focused on the association between alcohol consumption and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), although with inconsistent findings. Antioxidants may play a role since lyophilised red wine was found to prolong SOD1 mice lifespan. The aim of this international population-based case–control study performed in Ireland, The Netherlands and Italy was to assess the role of alcohol, and red wine in particular, in developing ALS.MethodsEuro-MOTOR is a case–control study where patients with incident ALS and controls matched for gender, age and area of residency were recruited in a population-based design. Logistic regression models adjusted for sex, age, cohort, education, leisure time physical activity, smoking, heart problems, hypertension, stroke, cholesterol and diabetes were performed.Results1557 patients with ALS and 2922 controls were enrolled in the study. Exposure to alcohol drinking was not significantly associated with ALS risk. A stratified analysis of exposure to alcohol by cohort revealed significant ORs in The Netherlands and in Apulia, with opposite directions (respectively 0.68 and 2.38). With regard to red wine consumption, only in Apulia the double-fold increased risk (OR 2.53) remained significant. A decreased risk was found for current alcohol drinkers (OR 0.83), while a significantly increased risk was detected among former drinkers (OR 1.63). Analysis of cumulative exposure to alcohol revealed no significant associations with ALS risk.ConclusionWith few exceptions, no significant association was found between alcohol consumption and ALS. The study of the association between alcohol and ALS requires a thorough exploration, especially considering the role of different type of alcoholic beverages.

Abstract:
The literature on the political and economic transition from Communism, developed largely in the context of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, has been dominated by the idea that horizontal forms of social and political association displace the vertically structured, segmented forms of social control and organization which are characteristic of traditional Communist systems. Social forces, by linking together in broadly based, horizontally structured associations such as industry-wide labour unions and associations of private entrepreneurs, are able to break out of the vertical structures of control and strengthen their collective bargaining position vis-a-vis the state. New associations of entrepreneurs, workers, religious organizations and eventually political parties emerge and coalesce and further strengthen the power of civil society against the state. Economic liberalization is seen as a particular catalyst to this process. Market reforms weaken the state's centralized control and enable social forces to mobilize autonomously.

Abstract:
Wine is a social object, established in the Old World and later migrated to the New World. Champagne is an internationally important and famous French sparkling wine, significantly present worldwide. Brazil, a New-World wine producer, has a recent but expanding history of sparkling wine production and consumption. As to its social aspect, this product has different representations and roles in both these countries. Therefore, this study aims to understand how culture and social status influence the organization of social representations associated with sparkling wines in Brazil and France. Thus, we used the Social Representation approach, a theory of knowledge and communication. For content collection, we carried out a verbal association task. Two hundred and thirteen Brazilians and one hundred ninety-eight French participants provided the first four words which came to mind after hearing four inducted words. The verbal associations were categorized using semantic contextualization. Then, we performed a Correspondence Factor Analysis. The results supported our hypothesis that culture, social status, and social origins all influence social representations associated with sparkling wine, revealing this kind of wine to be a product of social distinction and affluence.

Abstract:
The recent indictment of more than 40 individuals and entities in the FIFA corruption scandal demonstrates the expansive reach of the federal criminal law, raising important questions of extraterritorial jurisdiction and substantive law. This article argues that the existing law is sufficient to capture pervasive corruption in international organizations like Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) when their transactions reach domestic wires in the financial system. The principal charge in the FIFA case, for example, falls under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). But the extraterritorial application of RICO is far from settled law, and the dramatic scale of the racketeering conspiracy will have profound implications for the substantive law, presenting problems of legal specification and challenging the transactional model of crime. One of the indictment’s predicate offenses, moreover, is a novel honest services fraud charge that implicates the very nature of fiduciary duties in the international marketplace. This article suggests that the law should extend fiduciary protections against commercial bribery in the international sphere so long as the values underlying those protections accord with collectively shared norms. Finally, this article advances a conceptual understanding, informed by theories of global governance and development, of why the law should countenance international corruption. Federal prosecutors are becoming increasingly concerned with the integrity of globally integrated markets, and global prosecutions may carry the potential to strengthen deterrence, policy cohesion among decentralized stakeholders, and reinforce international norms of conduct.

Abstract:
Abstract BACKGROUND Genome-wide analyses estimate glioma heritability at 25%, yet known risk loci account for just one-third of this risk and suggest that sporadic glioma is a highly polygenic disease with hitherto unaccounted for genomic architecture. LD-score regression leverages results from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and known patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD) to estimate correlation between the genetic architecture of multiple phenotypes. We applied LD-score regression to identify associations with neuro-cognitive and neuro-psychiatric traits not amenable to study in prior glioma case-control analyses. METHODS GWAS summary statistics were obtained from the Glioma International Case-Control Consortium (GICC) meta-analysis (Melin, et al. 2017) and for 64 neuro-cognitive and neuro-psychiatric traits primarily from the UK Biobank. Included SNPs had quality scores ≥0.70 and minor allele frequency ≥0.01. Pairwise genetic correlations between traits were estimated using the LDSC package. P-values < 7.8x10-4 (i.e. 0.05/64) were considered significant. RESULTS Significant negative correlations were identified between the genetic architectures of glioma and bipolar disorder (Rg=-0.41, P=1.4x10-9) and schizophrenia (Rg=-0.29, P=7.1x10-9), consistent in both GBM and LGG. Significant positive correlations were identified with measures of educational attainment, including age at educational completion (Rg=0.11, P=2.0x10-4), obtaining a college degree (Rg=0.086, P=4.9x10-4), college attendance (Rg=0.086, P=5.9x10-4), and years of education (Rg=0.081, P=7.7x10-4). These associations were notably stronger with LGG. A number of additional nominal associations were observed, including with anorexia (anti-correlated) and performance on a pair-matching cognitive test (positively correlated). Importantly, LD-score regression did not identify an association between glioma risk in GICC data and Townsend deprivation index in UK Biobank data. CONCLUSIONS These results implicate a shared genetic basis for glioma and several psychiatric and cognitive traits. Further research is needed to understand these associations and to explore underlying mechanisms, including the mediating effects of neuro-inflammation, developmental differences in neural‒glial cell circuitry, and inter-individual variation in myelination.

Abstract The International Studies Association (ISA) has gone through a variety of internal changes as a result of growth in our membership. Such growth transformed the association from a regional American enterprise into a global organization, diversified our disciplinary profile away from the dominance of political science, and incorporated individuals represented by a wide array of cultural identities into the membership. These changes have had huge effects on ISA's organizational identity and our attempts to manage it. I describe various options available for organizations to manage identity, including ISA's traditional strategy for identity management, and conclude with a plea for an aggregation strategy that refocuses attention on international studies as our master identity. I argue that such a strategy allows us to embrace and enhance the diversity of the association to pursue the major challenges facing the globe today.

Revising the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a pressing task which should find its natural forum for debate in this Journal, above all others. Elsewhere (Ladefoged (1987); and in our own pages, Ladefoged and Roach (1987)) the President and Secretary of the International Phonetic Association issue a call to arms for this task, drawing attention to some preliminary questions on which the Association needs to have a clear view. One question is that of the IPA's constituency: who are the users of the IPA, and what are their different needs for a phonetic alphabet? To help find out, the Association hopes to canvas as wide a population of IPA users as possible, drawing from non-members as well as members.

Abstract:
Purpose We performed a multistage genome-wide association study to identify inherited genetic variants that predict outcome in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma patients treated with immunochemotherapy. Methods We conducted a meta-analysis of two genome-wide association study data sets, one from the LNH2003B trial (N = 540), a prospective clinical trial from the Lymphoma Study Association, and the other from the Molecular Epidemiology Resource study (N = 312), a prospective observational study from the University of Iowa–Mayo Clinic Lymphoma Specialized Program of Research Excellence. Top single nucleotide polymorphisms were then genotyped in independent cohorts of patients from the Specialized Program of Research Excellence (N = 391) and the Groupe Ouest-Est des Leucémies Aiguës et Maladies du Sang (GOELAMS) -075 randomized trial (N = 294). We calculated the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) using a log-additive genetic model with adjustment for age, sex, and age-adjusted International Prognostic Index. Results In a meta-analysis of the four studies, the top loci for EFS were marked by rs7712513 at 5q23.2 (near SNX2 and SNCAIP; HR, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.23 to 1.57; P = 2.08 × 10−7), and rs7765004 at 6q21 (near MARCKS and HDAC2; HR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.22 to 1.57; P = 7.09 × 10−7), although they did not reach conventional genome-wide significance (P = 5 × 10−8). Both rs7712513 (HR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.29 to 1.72; P = 3.53 × 10−8) and rs7765004 (HR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.27 to 1.71; P = 5.36 × 10−7) were also associated with OS. In exploratory analyses, a two–single nucleotide polymorphism risk score was highly predictive of EFS (P = 1.78 × 10−12) and was independent of treatment, IPI, and cell-of-origin classification. Conclusion Our study provides encouraging evidence for associations between loci at 5q23.2 and 6q21 with EFS and OS in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma treated with immunochemotherapy, suggesting novel biology and the potential contribution of host genetics to the prognosis of this aggressive malignancy.

Abstract:
With the completion of the international HapMap project and the development of high-throughput technologies, designing more effective epistasis detection algorithm for genome-wide data poses a significant challenge. This paper proposes a new method based on the Markov blanket to solve the limitations of the existing algorithm, such as a large false-positive proportion and low accuracy. The algorithm uses G2 to judge the strength of correlation between variables of self-adaptive remove strategy and SNP matching method; to effectively eliminate variables that are unrelated to the target, as well as weak correlation between variables; to significantly reduce the search space and time; to prevent unnecessary retrieval analysis; and to improve the accuracy of the detection algorithm to a certain extent.

Abstract:
ObjectiveTo determine shared comorbidities and to identify underrecognized or unexpected morbidities in children with leukodystrophies using an unbiased phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) analysis of a nationwide pediatric clinical and financial database.MethodsData were extracted from the Pediatric Health Information System database. Patients with leukodystrophy were identified with International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision, clinical modification, diagnostic codes for any of 4 specific leukodystrophies (X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (E71.52x), Hurler disease (E76.01), Krabbe disease (E75.23), and metachromatic leukodystrophy (E75.25)) over a 3-year time period. Confirmed leukodystrophy cases (n = 553) were matched with 1659 controls. A PheWAS analysis was performed on all available ICD diagnostic codes for cases and controls. Comparisons were performed for all 4 leukodystrophies as a group and individually.ResultsWe found 174 phecodes (grouped ICD codes) associated with leukodystrophies, including 28 codes with a rate difference (RD) > 20%. Known comorbidities of leukodystrophies including developmental delay, epilepsy, and adrenal insufficiency were identified. Unexpected associations identified included hypertension (RD 30%, OR 25), hearing loss (RD 28%, OR 15), and cardiac dysrhythmias (RD 27%, OR 9). Hurler disease had a greater number of unique disease conditions.ConclusionsPheWAS analysis from a national database demonstrates shared and unique features of leukodystrophies. Developmental delay, cardiac dysrhythmias, fluid and electrolyte disturbances, and respiratory issues were common to all 4 leukodystrophy diseases. Use of a PheWAS in leukodystrophies and other pediatric neurologic diseases offers a method for targeting improved care for patients by identification of morbidities.

Background Migraine headaches are a common problem worldwide, especially in adolescents. They are usually chronic, with frequent relapses. Therefore, any dietary risk factor for headaches has important implications on migraineurs. However, the association between migraine and diet needs to be examined further. Objective To investigate the association between diet and migraine in adolescents. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study in August to September 2009 on 13 - 18 year old adolescents in a senior high school in Medan, North Sumatera. We included subjects diagnosed with migraine, according to the International Headache Society (IHS) criteria. Ninety participants completed the questionnaire. Foods we observed for a link to migraine included milk, chocolate, ice cream, cheese, bread, instant noodles, meatballs, chili sauce, sweetener, yoghurt, pizza, and other foods and beverages. Results Of the 90 participants with migraines, there were more females (61.1%) than males. There were statistically significant associations between migraine and triggering foods (P = 0.045, 95% CI 0.59 to 0.79) as well as between migraine and family history of migraine (P = 0.043, 95% CI 0.46 to 0.66). Stress (P = 0.164), menstruation (P = 0.369), and sound or light (P= 0.577) had no significant association with migraine. A wide variety of foods and beverages were implicated as migraine precipitants. The most common were chili sauce (75.8%), ice cream (71.0%), milk (67.7%), instant noodles (67.7%), chocolate (61.3%), peanuts (59.7%), cheese (54.8%) and meatballs (54.8%).Conclusion Food and family history have a significant association with the occurrence of migraine in adolescents.

Abstract:
BackgroundCandidate gene studies have been a key approach to the genetics of schizophrenia (SCZ). However, the results of these studies are confusing and no genes have been unequivocally implicated. The hypothesis-driven candidate gene literature can be appraised by comparison with the results of genome-wide association studies (GWAS).MethodWe describe the characteristics of hypothesis-driven candidate gene studies from the SZGene database, and use pathway analysis to compare hypothesis-driven candidate genes with GWAS results from the International Schizophrenia Consortium (ISC).ResultsSZGene contained 732 autosomal genes evaluated in 1374 studies. These genes had poor statistical power to detect genetic effects typical for human diseases, assessed only 3.7% of genes in the genome, and had low marker densities per gene. Most genes were assessed once or twice (76.9%), providing minimal ability to evaluate consensus across studies. The ISC studies had 89% power to detect a genetic effect typical for common human diseases and assessed 79% of known autosomal common genetic variation. Pathway analyses did not reveal enrichment of smaller ISCpvalues in hypothesis-driven candidate genes, nor did a comprehensive evaluation of meta-hypotheses driving candidate gene selection (SCZ as a disease of the synapse or neurodevelopment). The most studied hypothesis-driven candidate genes (COMT,DRD3,DRD2,HTR2A,NRG1,BDNF,DTNBP1andSLC6A4) had no notable ISC results.ConclusionsWe did not find support for the idea that the hypothesis-driven candidate genes studied in the literature are enriched for the common genetic variation involved in the etiology of SCZ. Larger samples are required to evaluate this conclusion definitively.

Abstract:
Background Before the genome-wide association (GWA) era, many hypothesis-driven candidate gene association studies were performed that tested whether DNA variants in genes that had been selected based on prior knowledge about migraine pathophysiology were associated with migraine. Most studies involved small sample sets without robust replication, thereby making the risk of false-positive findings high. Genome-wide marker data of thousands of migraine patients and controls from the International Headache Genetics Consortium provide a unique opportunity to re-evaluate key findings from candidate gene association studies (and other non-GWA genetic studies) in a much larger data set. Methods We selected 21 genes from published candidate gene association studies and six additional genes from other non-GWA genetic studies in migraine. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in these genes, as well as in the regions 500 kb up- and downstream, were inspected in IHGC GWAS data from 5175 clinic-based migraine patients with and without aura and 13,972 controls. Results None of the SNPs in or near the 27 genes, including the SNPs that were previously found to be associated with migraine, reached the Bonferroni-corrected significance threshold; neither when analyzing all migraine patients together, nor when analyzing the migraine with and without aura patients or males and females separately. Conclusion The available migraine GWAS data provide no clear evidence for involvement of the previously reported most promising candidate genes in migraine.

Abstract:
Consumers awareness of the energy value of wines leads to a more conscious approach to the wine products choice, considering the rational nutrition principles. Excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages can pose a threat to the human health. The purpose of the research carried out by the authors was to determine the energy value of different types of wines by an interna- tional method developed by the International Association of official analytical chemists. A man determined physical and chemical parameters in the wines: the volume fraction of ethyl alcohol, the mass concentration of the reduced extract and sugars. The wine condition is a determining energy value factor: for table wines, this indicator is 59-158 kcal and increases from dry to sweet, while the contribution of ethyl alcohol to the value of the indicator can reach 93.0 %; the energy value of liqueur wines varies in the range of 79-208 kcal. Carbohydrates, represented by simple sugars, provide up to 45.0 % of the caloric content; differences in the indicator for dry wines of the two groups range from 20.0 to 50.0 %. The researchers carried out the systematization of liqueur wines depending on the type in order to increase energy value: Sherry → Marsala → Madeira → Port wine → Сahors wine → Tokay → Muscat → Malaga.

Abstract:
Abstract Context Atrial fibrillation (AF), cardiac arrhythmias, and related risk factors are common in patients with Cushing’s syndrome, or clinical chronic hypercortisolism. While hypercortisolism may be associated with AF, this association has not yet been ascertained causally. Objective To determine whether plasma cortisol is causally associated with AF using a 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) design. Methods Three genetic variants in the SERPINA1/SERPINA6 locus and functionally associated with plasma cortisol were identified in the CORtisol NETwork consortium (12 597 participants). Summary-level genome-wide association study (GWAS) data for the associations between the cortisol-associated variants and AF were obtained from a GWAS meta-analysis of 6 studies (60 620 AF cases and 970 216 noncases) and the FinnGen consortium (17 325 AF cases and 97 214 noncases). The fixed-effects inverse-variance weighted approach accounting for genetic correlations between variants was used for analysis. Multivariable MR analyses were conducted to assess potential mediating effects of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and waist circumference (WC). Summary-level GWAS data for SBP and WC were obtained respectively from the International Consortium of Blood Pressure (757 601 participants) and the Genetic Investigation of ANthropometric Traits consortium (232 101 participants). Results One standard deviation increase in genetically predicted plasma cortisol was associated with greater risk of AF (odds ratio [OR] 1.20, 95% CI 1.06-1.35). The association attenuated when adjusting for genetically predicted SBP and WC (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.72-1.38). Conclusion Evidence derived from the MR study suggests a positive association between plasma cortisol and risk of AF, likely mediated through SBP and WC.
