Abstract:
This thesis presents high performance turbo decoder architecture for VLSI implementation in terms of area, power and critical path delay. A Max-Log-MAP (MLMAP) algorithm is used to implement the turbo decoder with sliding window (SW) method to reduce the latency. Low power and area efficient turbo decoder implementation is achieved by reducing memory blocks required to control the SW method and to store the branch metrics used for computing log-likelihood-ratio (LLR). Retiming and reordering method is applied to implementing the units needed to calculate the LLR and the state metrics, to save

The dissertation presents novel methodologies to realize a multi-band and multi-standard receiver with an interference-cancellation capability. First, the receiver specifications are derived from the wireless communication standard. The effectiveness of this technique is demonstrated by the measurement of prototype integrated circuit (IC). To make the IC operate for multi-standard, another novel technique is also propo

A special feature of this planning problem is that any node in this network can send data to at most one node towards the next hop, thus traffic flow is unsplittable from source to destination.

A major consideration for mobile WiMAX is seamless handoff. The British English term for transferring a cellular call is handover whereas the Americans prefer to call it handoff. Cellular-based standards have the advantage of many years experience in handover for voice calls, while for broadband mobility in itself is no mean feat, and handover is still a challenge. Mobile IP, with "slow" handover, will be fine for web-browsing but not good enough for decent voice quality. Many services require the appearance of seamless connections (VoIP, VPNs, etc). In recent years, Optical Wireless (OW) communication techniques have attracted substantial attention as a benefit of their abundant spectral resources in the optical domain, which is a potential solution for satisfying the ever-increasing demand for increased wireless capacity in the conventional Radio Frequency (RF) band. Motivated by the emerging techniques and applications of OW communication, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) had released the IEEE standard 802.15.7 for short-range optical wireless communications, which categorised the Physical layer (PHY) of the
