Abstract:
The work outlines first the process by which Aristotle laid the foundations for logic which has become the standard for correct reasoning, as well as the shortcuts which he took and has made logic virtually useless for the study of arguments as they occur in informal arguments. Then the work establishes new concepts on which actual reasoning and argumentation are based and introduces what is labeled as reasoning square, a structure on which any form of discourse can be analyzed. In order to prove the validity of the new theory, it is applied to various forms of discourse or literary devices, then to the book of Ecclesiastes, one of the most confusing books in the Bible for which no satisfactory explanation and interpretation has been offered before. And finally, the new theory is applied to analyzing scholarly works from the point of view of how consistent they are in what they say as well as their relation to the text whose meaning they claim to accurately expose

In this thesis, we designed and implemented a crowdsourcing system to annotate mouse behaviors in videos; this involves the development of a novel clip-based video labeling tools, that is more efficient than traditional labeling tools in crowdsourcing platform, as well as the design of probabilistic inference algorithms that predict the true labels and the workers' expertise from multiple workers' responses. Our algorithms are shown to perform better than majority vote heuristic. We also carried out extensive experiments to determine the effectiveness of our labeling tool, inference algorithms and the overall system.

Stiglingh, Danelle. "Practical wisdom gained from journeying with HIV : narrative therapeutic research." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/60424.

Full text
Abstract:
Stories about HIV are everywhere. They are told (i.e. constructed), heard (i.e. taken in) and then re-told (i.e. shared). It is when we start asking questions about such stories, that new story "versions" become available; to be told, heard and possibly retold. Given the methodological boundaries connected to HIV research, few research studies are able to utilize the research context to venture beyond the mere collection (i.e. hearing) and re-telling (i.e. sharing) of story experiences. As a result, the hidden, alternative story "versions" which are "awakened" during the research process, may remain untold. Over the course of 4 months, the researcher utilized the existing dialogical space of the therapy context, as a practical platform for researching the dominant, as well as the "absent but implicit" meaning of HIV. Through ongoing dialogical interaction, this research journey set out, to not only hear the dominant stories told about HIV, but also to explore the hidden, preferred alternative story "versions". An adolescent girl living with HIV acquired through mother-to-child transmission, collaborated with the researcher to engage in this journey of therapeutic co-research. With this narrative report, I invite you to become an audience member to this unfolding journey. Throughout this report, I used the word "journey" as a guiding metaphor, situating the act of meaning making as a collaborative ongoing process of co-research, rather than a collection of facts. This research report is a narrative in itself and is subdivided into three parts. Part I includes all chapters written before my journey with the adolescent as co-researcher; part II includes all aspects related to our journey as co-researchers; and part III involves the time period after our journey as co-researchers. In part I, chapter 1, I introduce you to my way of speaking (i.e. narrative language), grounded in my way of seeing (i.e. social constructionist paradigm). In chapter 2, I shared with you my own narrative in making sense of HIV through personal reflective journal entries. By doing so, I acknowledge that I, researcher and therapist also tell stories about HIV through my statements, questions and everyday actions and interactions. In chapter 3, I reviewed academic literature in an attempt to research how adolescent HIV is "authored" (narrated) to the public by various academic discourses. In chapter 4, I reviewed narrative research studies of illness stories, relevant to adolescent HIV. Hereafter I stated my research question, justification, aim, and objectives. In chapter 5, I provide an overview of the research process, as was undertaken for the purpose this journey. In part II, I introduce you to "Gabby" (pseudonym), my co-researcher and co-author of this narrative report. Gabby regularly received ART at the paediatric out-patient unit at Kalafong Tertiary Provincial Hospital at the time of our interaction. In chapter 6, I describe the project phase (chapter6), alongside Gabby's participation. The project phase was situated within a narrative social constructionist frame. It consisted of two sub-phases as a means to transform the therapeutic context to one of therapeutic co-research. The first sub-phase stretched over the course of 3 months as Gabby participated in the Collaborative Storybook Development (CSD) project. The CSD project was based on the narrative therapeutic work of Freedman and Combs (1996) on story construction and development. Each session was video recorded for the purpose of co-reflective discussion during the second sub-phase. Focussed co-reflection sessions formed the second sub-phase, which took place once a week and stretched across an additional 1 month period. The aim of this sub-phase was to collaboratively review how storytelling was employed to make sense of HIV throughout the CSD project. Over the course of four months, the project phase allowed for in-depth co-research into the meaning of HIV. Part III documents the time period following our journey as co-researchers. Chapter 7 is a reintegration (telling) of the new knowledge and practical wisdom constructed during the project phase. Such "telling" is done in the form of a storybook. Chapter 8 sheds some light on the narrative practice of reincorporation (sharing). This involved the sharing of new knowledge with audiences outside of the co-research dyad. In chapter 9, I discussed the ethical considerations undertaken in this research. This is followed by a discussion on the shortcomings and limitations of this journey. Based on the practical wisdom gained from this journey, recommendations are made for future endeavours.

Abstract:

This multi-modal dissertation examines the historical hegemonic making of U.S. education, and how compulsory schooling has framed acceptable notions of culture, language/literacy, and knowledge production. Through this criticism of colonization and education, theoretical and practical alternatives are explored for the opportunities outside mainstream schooling in the US. In examining the literary work on decolonizing education, these efforts can engage in unlearning of coloniality by finding examples from a time before colonization. In contemporary society, the practice of de/unschooling can hold the possibilities for decolonizing education. To demonstrate how families of color in the U.S. engage with unschooling, interview questions serve as the sharing of knowledge and experience so as to ground the research in lived reality. A brief survey of critical education and critical pedagogy broadens those already critical of schools and/or receptive to the criticism of schools and the un/deschooling alternative then places student and family/community as the center of learning and teaching.

Impey, Richard. "Working with the wisdom of the congregation : theology, learning and organizing in the local church." Thesis, University of Chester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/310999.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contends that a pattern of training entitled Parish Development devised by the author in the course of his professional role as a training officer in the Church of England is a new, versatile and valuable training resource for training and development in the Church of England (and potentially for other churches too.) This pattern of training engages with the congregation as a whole, unlike traditional training methods which focus on the individual who is being prepared for, or supported in, a leadership role within and on behalf of the local church. Parish Development enables a congregation to discover important aspects of its own wisdom by constructing an account of its story, size, purposes, outlook, stage on a life cycle and shared values in belonging to this particular congregation. The resulting account will have implications for the way the congregation organizes its life and activities which usually imply that some improving or developmental action can be taken. The account is also relevant to several issues facing congregations both in the normal course of change, like the appointment and induction of a new vicar, or in more substantial change like merging with another parish or sharing clergy. This new pattern of training has been constructed from insights to be found in Congregational Studies and turned into exercises designed to enhance the self understanding of the congregation as a whole. It employs a pedagogy which draws inspiration from Freire, Vella and Wickett in focussing on dialogue and conversation designed to reveal the wisdom already present within the congregation and to build on that. The notion of the wisdom of the congregation has roots in Aristotleʼs use of phronesis, a concept familiar to practical theologians through the writings of Browning and Graham, but just as importantly, it makes sense to congregational members themselves. The theological purpose driving this pattern of training is the desire to build up the local church as the body of Christ. This accords with the congregation as koinonia, an important ecumenical understanding of the church, which is always in need of oikodome or building up. The research interprets data about the impact of this training on four selected case studies. The data consists of locally published reports of the training events, interviews with participants looking back on what happened, and the results of a questionnaire designed to explore the status of contrasting accounts. It also uses eight metaphors for organizations identified by Morgan to provide further insights into the complexity of what is happening. The method is shown to be versatile enough to respond positively to difficult decisions and changes in parish life. It harnesses a hitherto largely ignored resource to explore and contribute to solving significant problems facing the contemporary church. To demonstrate its implementable validity the thesis concludes with a practical proposal for employing this method to address the challenge of declining clergy numbers. An Appendix offers a theological commentary on Parish Development showing that this proposal is in line with contemporary Anglican ecclesiology.

De, Wet Daniël Paulus. "Wisdom and Ubuntu : a close reading of Proverbs 1-9 in dialogue with African Ubuntu." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50548.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2005
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this dissertation is to demonstrate that a dialogue can be established between wisdom in Proverbs 1 - 9 and ubuntu. This dialogue becomes evident from a close reading of Proverbs 1 - 9 and from a study of the correspondence between the worldviews found in ancient Israel and Africa respectively. Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu is a Zulu saying that has its equivalent in nearly every sub- Saharan culture. Briefly, it translates to: "A human being is a human being because of (other) human beings." This points to a uniquely African view of human beings. This communal emphasis is also found within the wisdom literature of the Old Testament. The sages of the Old Testament attach great importance to harmony in the community and strongly emphasise obedience to wisdom as a way of accomplishing this harmony. The dialogue between wisdom and ubuntu is especially challenging from an academic point of view. On the one hand, wisdom highlights valuable aspects of African ways of life, principles and ideas that are often overlooked or ignored. On the other hand, ubuntu holds the promise of a nonwestern tradition that has been misread and marginalised in history, but that is reclaiming its place. A close reading is used to interpret the particular words, images and organisation of the scenes or passages in Proverbs 1 - 9. The interaction between the worldviews of ancient Israel and Africa leads us to further conclusions, identifying gaps in our knowledge and pointing to directions that could be followed in hermeneutics of which scholars have been unaware up to now. It also helps to sharpen the focus on wisdom by suggesting new perspectives of interpretation. The dialogue between wisdom and ubuntu leads us to fresh, exciting insights and a deeper understanding of issues that are of central concern in the field of wisdom theology research. In Proverbs 1 - 9, wisdom theology is redefined from an ubuntu perspective. The dialogue between wisdom and ubuntu thus leads us to a new development within wisdom theology. It helps us appreciate the new emphasis on communality. This does not happen in isolation. i1Ji1' m~tl'is identified as the primal source of wisdom. It must be regarded, however, in combination with the emphasis on living in communion with others. The essence of the new understanding - an existential understanding of wisdom - leads us towards appreciating the interrelatedness between human beings. Creation theology can be understood as deed/consequence theology, where the intimate relationship between experiencing divine awe and living in communion with others becomes evident. The dialogue between wisdom and ubuntu redefines the deed/consequence or causality aspect of wisdom theology as the "goal" of the wise. It is not the aim of this dissertation to copy some previously developed theological approach from one context into another, but rather to stimulate creative hermeneutical thinking with regard to African views on Old Testament wisdom literature. In this study we come to the conclusion that Afrocentric hermeneutics has the potential to be more responsive to the context of the Old Testament wisdom literature than Western theological exegesis has been.
Die wysheidsteologie in Spreuke I - 9 word geherdefinieer vanuit 'n ubuntu-perspektief.

Abstract:
Chapter one begins with a definition and exposition of the concept of theodicy, and a topology for characterizing comparative theodicies is suggested. It is argued that the basis on which theodicies might be compared is the foundational ontological principles on which they are built. Chapter two is a lengthy discussion regarding the meaning of terms such as omnipotence omniscience omnibenevolence, moral evil and natural evil. Chapter three begins with a critical analysis of a variety of theodicies found throughout the history of Christian theology. The final conclusion drawn in this chapter is that none of the proposed answers is acceptable. Acceptability is measured in three important ways: First, is the position logically consistent, second, does it conform, at least in a broad way, to the major tenents of the Christian form of life, and third, does this position take the individual sufferer seriously? In chapter four a foundation is laid for a response to the problem of evil which is to follow in chapter five. In this penultimate chapter an analysis of the Book of Job is offered which centers on the interpretation of Yahweh's speeches out of the whirlwind. It is suggested that the crux of Jobs repentance is to be understood in connection with Job "seeing God." In chapter five, an attempt is made, using the help of Karl Barth, D. M. Mackinnon, P. T. Forsyth, Ludwig Wittgenstein and John Wisdom, as well as some insights gained from chapter four, to argue that there is a teleological response to the problem of evil that is logically consistent, true to the Christian form of life and sensitive to the needs of the individual sufferer.

Abstract:
One major trajectory of early 'aql traditions is scrutinized: the Aqbil! Adbir! creation narrative "lamma khalaqa llahu l-'aqla (When god had created the intelligence ...)". In Part I early Sunni and Shii transmission and reception of the varying texts dominates the discussion, with analysis of chief motifs. Then successive transformations are traced, with attention devoted to ideas of 'first creation'. The original context of the Aqbil! reports is convincingly explained within the thought forms of 1st & 2nd century theological ideas of voluntarism or predestination, without recourse to Goldziher's "new-Platonic element". The late neo-Platonising form "awwalu ma khalaqa llahu l-'aqlu, (The first (thing) God created is the intellect ...)", is shown to be not earlier than the mid-3rd/9th century.
In a related class of narratives, 'aql pre-exists in the realm of the divine Throne. The focus is the notion of the divinely provisioned innate trait of 'intelligence' or 'wisdom' as a "light in the heart" inequitably apportioned among humanity. Part II examines the creative manner in which the sixth Shi'iimam Ja'far al-Sadiq (d.148/765) transforms the Aqbil! tradition by integrating this heavenly sapiential 'aql with the 'Adam-Iblis' conflict into a binary listing of the character traits (akhlaq, khisal). His myth of the creation, empowerment, and opposition between 'aql and jahl (intelligence & ignorance, or wisdom & folly) propounds a psycho-ethical scheme for the inner purgative struggle, wherein 'aql operates as chief of the character traits, Ja'far stresses the cognitive function (ma'rifah) in the perfection of 'aql peculiar to the inner circles of humanity (prophets, saints$ $ Imams, the faithful). An assessment is given of the repercussions of al-Sadiq's contribution for continuing Shii and Sufi enrichments of the 'aql creation narratives (eg. with al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi).

Macaskill, Grant. "Wisdom and apocalyptic in the Gospel of Matthew : a comparative study with 1 Enoch and 4QInstruction." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/7356.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent scholarship has demonstrated that Matthew's gospel has significantly developed both sapiential and apocalyptic elements within its narrative. Little attention has been paid, however, to the question of how these two features of Matthew's gospel might relate to one another. It is this gap in scholarly literature that the present study is intended to fill, by means of a comparative study with two other texts of mixed genre: 1 Enoch and 4QInstruction. An examination of these texts demonstrates that each is marked by an inaugurated eschatology, within which the revealing of wisdom to an elect group, defined in distinction to the Jewish parent group, serves as the pivotal moment of inauguration. In addition, within 4QInstruction the idea is developed that possession of this revealed wisdom allows the remnant to live in fidelity to the will of the Creator and to the patterns built-in to the original creation. Thus, possession of revealed wisdom facilitates a recovery of creation. These findings provide lines of enquiry that may be brought to Matthew. Three sections of the gospel are examined (chapters 5-7; 11-12; 24-25). It is argued that Jesus is presented as an eschatological figure who reveals wisdom to an elect group. This wisdom cannot be reduced to great moral insight or interpretation of Torah, but is presented as prophetic revelation, happening in eschatological time. It remains the case, however, that Matthew presents it as wisdom and presents Jesus as a sage. More tentatively, it is suggested that creation provides the patterns for the ethical requirements of Jesus' wisdom, thus indicating that the idea of restored creation is also at work in Matthew. The fall of the temple may also be connected in Matthew's narrative to such a restoration, but again, the evidence for this is not clear.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this research report is to fully understand the developing of a new age of wisdom. Society is constantly evolving and changing. Within society, there are different generations interacting with each other. Due to the speed of infonnation flow huge generation gaps have developed. This has led to a state of chaos. The report argues that infonnation and knowledge must change into wisdom, thus restoring stability to society. To make such a change, an understanding must be formulated about the wisdom worker, the type of leader who will lead them, as well as the company. Changes must take place in business, or else, the most talented people will leave. The literature investigation concentrates on the central aspects pertaining to this research, namely the understanding of the current society and the different generations. Through literature review, a better understanding is developed about the current chaotic business environment, as well as the evolving of the knowledge worker into the wisdom worker. Different authors' views are combined to develop the characteristics of the wisdom leader and the new structure of the wisdom economic organisation. Themes emerged from the investigation. The general principles of new society was centered out, the coming of the next generation, finding balance in life through five different intelligences, the new generation leader and wisdom workings within the visionary company structure. From the research report it is clear that employees experience a growing need to make work more meaningful and attractive. Due to increasing productivity pressure, employees are starting to look at alternatives. For the wisdom worker, financial well ness is subjective to a life filled with principles and values. They want work to be part of their lives, not the only life they know.
This dissertation is an adaptive case study/autoethnography used to examine the collaborative development of educational programming at the Haida Gwaii Museum at Kaay Llnagaay, in Skidegate, Haida Gwaii. The collaboration involves First Nations and non-First Nations working in a First Nations community museum context and seeks to learn ways to develop museum education programming that reflects Haida ways of knowing and to transfer this learning to non-First Nations museums. The study is grounded in the intersecting theories of Indigenous knowledge systems, postcolonialism and feminist poststructuralism, and critical and collaborative museologies. The research process involved a mix of methods including personal journaling, photo-documentation, participant interviews and observations. Fieldwork was undertaken over a sixteen month period. Kirkness and Barnhardt’s (1991) 4Rs were used to critically examine the collaborative process. The themes of relationship, and place and land were added to responsibility, reciprocity, relevance and respect. The results demonstrated that reciprocity and relevance were processes of give and take between colleagues, where the needs of all participants to see value in the process and be proud of the outcomes were recognized as critical for success. A major finding is that respectful relationships between First Nation and non-First Nations are needed for positive and productive collaborations and essential if the work undertaken is to foreground Indigenous knowledge in ways not normally incorporated into main-stream museum education programming. This study shows that through committed relationship building, spending time getting to know the people and the place, museum colleagues can contribute to a post-colonial museum practice, one argued here as a liminal museology. This means adapting established educational practices, listening and waiting for relevant local options to emerge.

Abstract:
The Nāmamantrārthāvalokinī ('An Explanation of the Meaning of the Namemantras') is an early, and major, commentary on the Nāmasaṃgīti ('The Chanting of Names'). Written by the eighth century Indian ācārya Vilāsavajra, it survives in the original Sanskrit and in Tibetan translation. The Nāmasamgīti enumerates the 'Names' of Mañjuśrī, the Mahayana figure embodying wisdom, and it exerted a strong influence on liturgy, ritual and meditation in the later phase of Buddhism in India (750-1200 CE). Vilāsavajra's commentary is written from a Yogācāra perspective and interprets the 'Names' within an elaborate ritual framework which consists in a maṇḍala that has Mañjuśrī as its central deity. The central part of the thesis comprises a critical edition and annotated translation of the Sanskrit text of the first five chapters of Vilāsavajra's commentary, approximately a quarter of the whole. The critical edition is based on eight Nepalese manuscripts for which a stemma codicum is established. Two blockprint editions of the Tibetan translation are consulted at cruces in the Sanskrit. Their readings, treated as those of any other witness, are incorporated into the apparatus as appropriate. The edition is followed by textual notes. Introductory material is divided into two parts. Matters relating to the Sanskrit and Tibetan materials are discussed in a section placed before the edition. These include a description of the manuscripts, discussion of the method of editing, establishment of the stemma codicum and an assessment of the Tibetan translation. An introduction to the contents precedes the translation and is primarily concerned with an outline of the ritual structure of the commentary, giving particular attention to chapters 1-5. Evidence concerning the life and date of Vilāsavajra is considered, suggesting he should be placed in the latter part of the eighth century. Assessing the work's significance for the study of Buddhism, 1 suggest that it is of historical importance in that it throws light on the process by which Tantric methods were being related to soteriology in this period; and that it contains material, especially in the sādhana of chapter 4, that contributes to an understanding of the development of Tantric forms of Buddhist meditation. The work is also the only known instance of a commentary of a Yogatantra type that survives in Sanskrit.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will eat forever. Author Unknown Users of current text-based computer interfaces do entirely too much typing and too much searching. The computer should alleviate more of the burden of being so specific. Automation is the key but automation in this domain is challenging. In order to allow users to incorporate more automation into their interfaces, we find that a new command shell architecture is needed. Our approach is to centralize knowledge in a persistent way while parallelizing execution. The working prototype, Fish, maintains a global, persistent knowledge repository across concurrent interactive sessions. Fish is customizable and extensible, with not only a concise command language but also a full programming language. It supports efficient communication between the machine and the user in many ways, most notably by giving the user access to the results of previously executed commands

The Chinese saying goes: “three simple cobblers beats a Zhu Ge-liang.” That means if three mediocre people can manage to put their heads together, they can come up with a more well-thought-out strategy than the military strategic genius Zhu Ge-liang. This combining the intelligence of groups to counter or even surpass the intelligence of a single expert has seen many examples throughout history. Recently, with the development of the Internet, we have witnessed many applications of this principle in various systems that leverage the knowledge of crowds to solve the problems of individuals or groups. The classic example is Wikipedia, a platform which allows people to input their knowledge on the Web according to their own specialty or hobby: by thus leveraging the natural desire of people to share their knowledge, Wikipedia has successfully constructed a multi-discipline encyclopedia. Likewise with the Google search engine which we use every day: mainly by using the link relationships between pages as well as counts of user click-throughs, Google attempts to examine the user''s search keywords to decide which pages should be listed as relevant, and in what order. These links between pages and click-through rates are in fact accumulations of the knowledge of the crowd -- clearly not something achievable by a single expert or even a small group of experts. This trend seems to have taken over the computing world; however, systems that thus leverage the knowledge of the crowd are still primarily modeled on perceived human behaviors. Although many Internet platforms such as Yahoo, Answer+, and the PTT system offer areas where crowd knowledge is leveraged at a higher level, the open nature of these platforms leads to only sporadic use by users, and thus often less-than-ideal results. In this work we take romance as an example. We seek to understand what happens when a person is emotionally distraught or is looking for information or needs to make a decision; in particular, how the person successfully finds an answer or makes a good decision with the help of willing participants of online open forums (also called “villagers”). Our hope in this is to build a better realtime question-and-answer system based on the combined intelligence of online groups. We find that the more candid the original poster is initially, the more candid the original poster is later on; the more the original poster interacts in the discussion, the more villagers are attracted to participate; the greater the level of interaction between the original poster and villagers, the more the villagers'' active contributions, and the more help is obtained via the intelligence of this group of villagers. Results of SVM modeling indicate good performance when combining the three dimensions of passion, intimacy, and commitment, as long as any one dimension''s change is taken as a change in status.

Named “The smart home air quality monitoring system with the wisdom of the Internet of things“, it is because among Taiwan's top ten death causes, in addition to car accidents, the other nine are related to air pollution according to the Ministry of Health statistics. Over and above, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of the Executive Yuan has started to promote the relevant regulations in regard to the indoor air quality control, which will be amount to 17 different kinds of premises. To that end, Ambient air quality closely stands in people's health. In this paper, the author tries to fulfill environmental monitoring on various sensing elements, and simultaneously to display the environment values on the LCD and the user's mobile phone APP. Then the system is able to get how the current environment is polluted behind the data analysis , when the value reaches the noxious point which is harmful to human beings, it will remind the users through a voice alert while using RF to start the equipment to remove the hazards automatically. What’s more, the system is lightweight and portable, the users may do environmental monitoring wherever they go. Besides, the system will upload environmental values and GPS coordinates to the cloud database through WiFi. An environmental monitoring information network will be formed on the way of the Internet of things, hence all APP users are available to check the regional environmental values .

Abstract:

The book of Ecclesiastes forms part of the wisdom genre, of Hebrew literature. It is a notoriously difficult book to interpret. The author, Qoheleth, displays an ideology and theology which is at variance with the rest of the Old Testament, namely protest wisdom. Finding the part Qoheleth plays, within the scope of the wisdom tradition, has troubled interpreters for years. This study, brings Socio-Rhetorics to bear on this problem. Rhetorical theory is used to try and bring about an understanding of how Qoheleth fits into the wisdom tradition. This study tries to show that Qoheleth dialogues with that wisdom tradition in order to develop his own argument. In particular, it shows that he quotes the book of Proverbs. How, Qoheleth, quotes Proverbs, and what he does with those texts, is illustrated in selected textual studies from Ecclesiastes. It was found that Qoheleth sharply criticise especially the simplistic over-evaluation of wisdom within traditional thought.

Research Background and Study Purposes:As global population aging, older adults with chronic diseases and dysfunction increase dramatically. Dementia is now a major challenge for public health. People with dementia suffer from cognitive impairment due to brain damage. As the disease progress, it will affect their physical function as well as causing serious behavior problems. At present, there is no treatment for dementia disease. Most commonly, people with dementia are recommended with non-pharmacological therapies through community-based services and hope to delay disease progression and maintain both physical and mental function. Adult Day Care and Family of Wisdom are the common community-based service models which were promoted by the long-term care policies in 2017 for people with dementia in Taiwan, but currently only Adult day care service are supported. Adult Day Care has been shown to maintain function performance of people with dementia. However, there weren’t study on the effects of Family of Wisdom for people with dementia. The purpose of this study was to explore and compare the effects of Adult Day Care and Family of Wisdom on maintenance of cognitive functions, physical functions, and behavioral symptoms of people with dementia. Research Methods:The study design was a quasi-experimental design study with two groups of demented older adults using different community-based long-term care services. The subjects of this study were people with dementia aged fifty and over in northern Taiwan who have used Adult Day Care or Family of Wisdom. The study compared the changes of cognitive functions, physical functions, and behavioral symptoms of people with dementia in the two groups using Short Portable Mental State Questionnaire(SPMSQ), Activities of Daily Living(ADL), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale(IADL), and Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire(NPI-Q) over 3 months of study period. Statistical method used Paired-Samples t-test to analyze whether pre-test scores and post-test scores of the functional scales within the group progressed or declined. In addition, the study used One-Way ANCOVA with pre-test scores and demographic characteristics controlled to analyze whether there was a difference in the post-test scores between the two groups. Research Result:A total of 64 people with dementia were surveyed from three Family of Wisdom and four Adult Day Care. Fifty-three valid questionnaires were returned, including 27 of Family of Wisdom and 26 of Adult Day Care. Firstly, there were no significant differences in pre-test scores and post-test scores in people with dementia using Family of Wisdom or Adult Day Care respectively. Both groups improved their functions on different perceives, including physical and cognitive function, but not for Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale (IADL) scores. IADL scores of people with dementia in Family of Wisdom improved after three months, but the scores for people with dementia in Adult Day Care showed the opposite direction of development. However, the changes were not significantly different. After controlling the pre-test scores and demographic characteristics, there were no significant differences in cognitive functions, physical functions, and behavioral symptoms between people with dementia after using 3 months of Family of Wisdom and Adult Day Care. Conclusion and Recommendations:Both Family of Wisdom and Adult Day Care can maintain cognitive functions, physical functions, and behavioral symptoms of people with dementia, and most of these functional performances also slightly improved over the 3 months of study period. Our research findings suggested future policies to include Family of Wisdom into the dementia community-based LTC service again, and increase the number of Family of Wisdom continuously and maintain the service quality, therefore promote service accessibility for people with dementia and their caregiver who have different types of needs for services. Furthermore, it’s suggested that future research could extend the study period and increase the number of subjects to determine whether both services can maintain functional performance in the long-term run.

Background:As global aging, more dementia patient are cared by family caregivers., family caregivingmay have great impact onboth physical and mental health of the caregiver and the dementia older adults they are caring for. Evaluating family cargivers'' experiences, which may included both positive and negative experiences, are important for future program and policy development. People with dementia and their family caregivers may use adult day care model or wisdom of family model in Taiwan. Objective:The purpose of this study was to explore and compare comprehensive assessment of family caregiver with dementia using adult day care and wisdom of family. Method:This study administer a comprehensive questionnaire in five adult day care centers and one wisdom of family. The comprehensive Questionnaire incldued three subscale. There were caregiving satisfaction, caregiving mastery and modified caregiver strain index. Participants of this study is the caregiver who attended the dementia patient, patient used the service already three months and is the mainly caregiver. The study used multiple regression to analyze and compare the differences in comprehensive assessment between families using adult day care and wisdom of family. Dementia cases and their family caregivers'' characteristics were controlled. Result:93 family caregiver were surveyed. There were no significant differences in comprehensive assessment scores between caregiver using adult day care and wisdom of family. For subscales, caregiver strain index, caregiving mastery and caregiving satisfaction, there were no significant differences found between family caregivers using adult day care and wisdom of family. As for the total score of comprehensive assessment scores, employment status change of caregiver was positively associated with caregiver comprehensive assessment scale and caregiver strain index, and negatively associated with caregiving satisfaction. The average care time of a day is positively associated with caregiver comprehensive assessment scale. Caregiver age was negatively associated with caregiving mastery. Disscussion:There were no significant differences in the scores for conprehensive assessment, caregiver strain index, caregiving satisfaction and caregiving mastery between family careivvers using adult day care and wisdom of family. This indicated both services are equally supported family caregivers with demented older adutls. Findings suggested both services can be recommended to family careivgvers with different service preference. In the future, we suggest service agency to give caregivers’ social support and skills of care to declined caregiving stress and increase caregiving satisfaction and mastery.

Abstract:
This cross-cultural study investigates identity and wisdom in people with Asperger syndrome (AS). The diagnostic characteristics of Asperger syndrome are universal, as they are manifest in particular outward behaviours (DSM-4). One of the aims of this study is to explore whether or not identity and wisdom are also universal in people with AS. Interviews were conducted that asked participants about their own lives, as well as about the acquaintances and historical figures to whom they look to for wisdom. Some self-report measures of identity, values, wisdom, and well-being were also administered to the participants. Forty-six male participants (half diagnosed with Asperger syndrome) were recruited from Karachi, Pakistan, and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Canada. People with AS were matched with non-autistics according to age. The results of this study showed that the Canadian Asperger group was significantly higher in social identity, and lower in personal integrity, as compared to the Pakistani Asperger group. The value of conservation was significantly higher in the Asperger groups than in the control groups. Mean scores on the 3-dimensional wisdom scale differed significantly between the Asperger and control groups, but remained the same between the two Asperger groups. People with AS were equally satisfied with their lives as compared to non-autistics. There was a greater emphasis on the theme of communion for the Pakistani Asperger group than for the Canadian Asperger group. Results also found a greater emphasis on the theme of personal agency in both the Asperger groups, as compared to the control groups. The Pakistani Asperger group mainly considered religious figures to be the wisest in history, whereas the Canadian Asperger group primarily nominated scientists as the wisest figures in history. Both the Asperger groups considered family members to be the wisest among their acquaintances. The concept of wisdom centered on the theme of cognition for both Asperger groups. The study was limited to male participants only, and future research should study both genders.

Taiwan’s aboriginal history was not well developed in written forms, but occurred in an “oral form” from collective memories. It is necessary to trace the cultural roots of indigenous people’s environmental concepts of ecological knowledge and wisdom. In this thesis, the main purpose is to explore the indigenous Atayal aborigine’s traditional cultural concepts - Gaga (Gaya; moral rules) and Utux (Rutux; faith), which have been constructed their environmental concepts. Figuring out the comparison between environmental education’s concept and theory from those traditional taboo, moral rules, or concepts, a final detection of construction of the basic connection between those thinking would be formed. This study performs by the qualitative data collection and analysis due to the importance of traditional wisdom and culture. Using the concepts of “Traditional Ecological Knowledge” and “Resource Management System” to figure out how these traditional concepts have been built up in Atayal people life, and how these indigenous Atayal hunters could devote their skills in culture maintenance in order to find their roots. This study concluded that a close connection between aboriginal ecological knowledge and tribal wisdoms could be conducted from the perspectives of environmental education, planning, and policies. A final discussion about aboriginal future has been narrated their identities with the possibilities to carry them out in some better ways from knowledge, attitude, and environmental-friendly behaviors. To inherit aboriginal hunting culture, the first step is to develop local people’s consensus, recommend to empower local people of setting their “Local Convention” toward self-governence, and emphasized the importance of strengthen aboriginal people’s identities from cultural, educational, and policy’s reforms.

Ndoga, Sampson S. "The contemporary significance of home based nurturing with reference to wisdom poems in the Book of Proverbs and Shona traditional culture." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/569.

Full text
Abstract:
There is presumed dialogue between the book of Proverbs and Shona wisdom poems in dealing with the subject of home based nurturing towards societal stability. The underlying principle in both approaches, it seems, is that preparation for life begins in the home. Its negligence could account for societal breakdown. This study seeks to explore, on the one hand, the contemporary validity of home based nurturing as observed in these traditional settings, and on the other, to investigate whether this dialogue yields a methodological approach of using Africa to interpret the Old Testament. The assumption we are taking in this study is that societal stability begins in the home. A socio-rhetorical reading of Proverbs 1-9 seems to reveal that these texts were written from the perspective of a parent-teacher, with years of experience and attained wisdom, which creates a forum to pass on this knowledge to a child-student. The common approach in both traditional settings is that the speaker employs wisdom poems, (memorable compositions) and local sayings (observed phenomena) to illustrate or illumine a given everyday reality as the prescriptive solution for becoming successful in life. Thus, wisdom poems, both biblical and Shona, are almost consistently used to communicate truth and lessons for life. For that reason, the reading of the book of Proverbs and that of Shona wisdom poems demands a novel hermeneutical approach.

Abstract This study is written based on using Dorothy E. Smith’s Institutional Ethnography as major principle, and adopting partial context as major concept. Taken self experience, as a head nurse in psychiatric department, into this study, I also interview other head nurses from same background. Generating information and questions about gender treatment in working fields and daily lives; furthermore, analyzing relations amongst head nurses experiences in gender treatment, medical system, organizations, and the society. Through further analyzing into self and other head nurses’ experiences, it discovers that “gender difference” plays an important part in many unfair treatments in working fields. For this, I consider the cause lies in disproportioned treatment in medical and nursing fields and relevant careers, for nursing has been considered as “women’s job”, and nursing employees are also mostly female. It also leads to disproportioned authority allocation and nursing marginalization, even for head nurses. I wish this study provides other head nurses with some new perspectives and inspirations; furthermore, could contribute further innovation in averting unfair gender treatment in relevant working fields, organizations, and instructions. Abstract:
As participants, we agreed that women's silenced voices need to be heard, more specific to this participatory action research, the voices of women with new babies. Through wellness pastoral care, we co-laboured in finding ways of standing up to prescribed religious and cultural ideas regarding womaness and motherhood. Pastoral care in partnership with feminist theology and mutuality in community opened a safe place to renegotiate our own preferred ways of seeing our bodies, selves, sexuality, and womaness. The pastoral care, counselling, and mutuality experienced as a research group became the prevalent characteristic of our wellness that we wished to extend beyond the group and into families, churches, community cohorts, and the planet. This research is one platform on which the participating women shared hurts, found a place to be heard, and having come to know our Self more deeply, offer this Self as a gift to the reader.

Abstract:
Old age and the process of aging is currently one of the most important fields for future scientific study and research. Special focus is centered on the post-career phase. A society where life is prolonged for an extra 20 to 30 years, most of which are spent in reasonably good health, is culturally speaking a recent phenomenon for which there are no historical models. It follows, that the current generation bears a great responsibility in shaping and moulding this stage in their lives not only for themselves but also for future generations. This dissertation concentrates on the theme of aging, first from a humanistic point of view, and secondly by focusing on biblical and theological aspects. Both of these chapters contain fundamental and important statements regarding the subject of aging as seen from different disciplines, and, wherever possible, with reference to each other. They build the basis and prerequisite for the following chapter in which the significance and possibilities as well as the limits of biography work is researched in view of pastoral care and training for elderly people in the post employment phase of their life. It becomes obvious, that not only gerontological literature but also biblical texts depict biographical work as an important prerequisite for a life experienced as being successful, especially at drastic turning points in life. A vital part in biographical reflection with elderly people is played by the person and professionalism of the instructor.
