Abstract:
The article attempts to reconstruct the image of a witch based on the interrogation records of those accused of witchcraft during the Salem trial (Massachusetts, North America, 1692) and related materials. The subject of research is the phenomenon of prosecution on those accused of witchcraft. The source base are the records of the Salem process, transcribed and published in 1977, as well as a number of documentary testimonies of witnesses, speaking from a puritanical viewpoint. The article examines the features of the mythological worldview of traditional society, dictated by the belief in supernatural influence (witchcraft). After analyzing the interrogation records of the first accused during this trial and considering a number of their biographical data, the author comes to the conclusion that the situation demonstrated by this trial is paradoxical: in fact, arbitrary people are subjected to persecution, and the reconstruction of the image of a witch that could underlie such accusations, does not seem possible. The author's conclusions are essential for the study of both the phenomenon of witch-trials and the mentality of traditional society. This article was conducted from an imagological perspective relevant to modern social studies.

Abstract:
This article explores the role played by the relationship between witch and familiar in the early modern witch trials. It positions animal familiars at the intersection of early modern belief in witchcraft and magic, examining demonologies, legal and trial records, and print pamphlets. Read together, these sources present a compelling account of human-animal interactions during the period of the witch trials, and shed light upon the complex beliefs that created the environment in which the image of the witch and her familiar took root. The animal familiar is positioned and discussed at the intersection of writing in history, anthropology, folklore, gender, engaging with the challenge articulated in this special issue to move away from mono-causal theories and explore connections between witchcraft, magic, and religion.

Abstract:
Abstract In the Akkadian anti-witchcraft ritual Maqlû, the incantation in i.73–121 exemplifies the theme of conducting adjudicatory proceedings against the witch in the divine courtroom. In particular, the patient’s presentation of the witch in effigy and the demand for judgment accord well with similar features attested in Neo-Babylonian trial records. Study of the incantation in light of these court records reveals the incantation’s attention to the details of legal procedure.

ABSTRACT This article charts a decade-long project on the trial of the Islandmagee witches in County Antrim (Northern Ireland) in 1711. The project comprised three overlapping and connected phases that negotiated a pathway between researching the history of the trial, its interpretative representation in public discourse, and finding impactful ways to bring this research to wider audiences. It demonstrates that creatively and carefully pitched, microhistories of specific trials can fruitfully add to key historiographical debates in witchcraft studies but when combined with sustained, targeted dissemination and co-produced and collaborative public history, it can open up hidden, but important parts of cultural history and dark heritage to wider audiences. This is especially important in countries such as Northern Ireland that have largely overlooked their witch hunting past and where public remembrance and commemoration of witch trials can be difficult and provoke controversy.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (EU) 2016/679 entered in force in Croatia on May 25, 2018. General Data Protection Regulation regulations still have to be applied. On June 29, 2018 the Croatian Parliament has proclaimed Law on Archives and Archival Records. Personal data of the persons that filled public posts and were members or collaborate of the security services till the May 30, 1990 are accessible without any restrictions regarding the part on performing duties or services. In Croatia there is no person that has been subject to trial only because he/she filled public posts and was members or collaborates of the security services during the socialism. There is no law that will make such trials possible. There are no official registers, released by the competent bodies, which list public officers, members or collaborates of the security service till the May 30, 1990. The unavoidable question arises regarding what criteria archivist should use to determine these persons, where to find relevant data. Why a task that is not and should not be competence of an archive is enforced on archives.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper provides a qualitative historical (socio)pragmatic analysis of records of three eighteenth-century Hungarian witchcraft trials using a socio-cognitive model of discursive community and identity construction. I aim to describe how the general social and legal context of witchcraft became situated and interpreted in the actual witchcraft trial records from the delegated officials’ perspective. I argue that in the analysed records, the officials did not simply apply a codified definition of “witchcraft”, but they discursively (re)constructed “witchcraft” as a community and “witch” as the defendants’ identity. Thus, from the officials’ perspective, discursive community and identity construction established a relationship between the general context of witchcraft and the actual witchcraft trials. In order to reconstruct this process, I investigate the linguistic constructs by which the delegated officials actively created “witchcraft” and the defendants’ “witch” identity as mental constructs.

The objective of this thesis is to study the challenges of data sharing in healthcare (namely clinical trials), and propose the use of Open Algorithms (OPAL) as a viable solution for research collaboration that allows for access to data without compromising data ownership (data is only used once for the intended purpose, raw data is never leaked, the value generated from the data is transferred to the owner). This thesis surveys the challenges unique to clinical trials, and highlights the various methods for privacy-preserving computation prior to this work. Through the overview of OPAL's solution in the space of privacy-preserving computation, we show the implementation details of how OPAL was applied to clinical trials in a project called Open Trial Chain, a platform for clinical trial data built for analytics, security, and incentivized sharing through technologies like federated learning and blockchain. With motivated examples derived from real-world reported problems in healthcare, we also demonstrate speed, accuracy, and security metrics. In the application, Open Trial Chain can drastically reduce clinical trial costs, reduce error, and increase quality of analysis diversity. Overall, this project shows promise for further extension in other health datasets for compliance in an ever-complicated move towards regulations that reflect for conscientiousness for data security, ownership, and provenance.

Abstract:
On June 10, 1692, Bridget Bishop was hung as a witch in the community of Salem Village of the Massachusetts colony. Bishop was the first of twenty that died, all of whom professed their innocence. By the end of the madness, more than two hundred persons stood accused of witchcraft. They attempted to prove their innocence or they falsely admitted guilt in order to save their own lives. Citizens did not discuss the episode for many years after the trials were ended. The whole episode was an embarrassing blemish on the history of the state, and there was little atonement for the unjust hangings of those who had proclaimed their innocence. Three hundred years later, Salem, Massachusetts is very different. The image of the witch on a broomstick has been commercialized, and the city has become known as the "Witch City." The city makes over $25 million a year in tourism and is one of the largest tourist attractions in all of New England. This change raises some very important questions, such as how did this change occur? Why did it occur? Is Salem unique? How did perceptions change over time, and why? This thesis attempts to answer these questions by examining a variety of sources. This thesis strives to explain how a tiny New England town that experienced the tragic phenomenon of the witch trials and hangings, evolved into the present-day Witch City.

Abstract:
This qualitative study examined the perceptions of stakeholders (administrators, principals, teachers, students, parents of students with/without disabilities and community members) in the Kalulushi District of Zambias Copperbelt province about their views on inclusive education in their district. The study provided a detailed, comprehensive portrait of the views of stakeholders, a view which can serve as a medium through which Zambia can familiarise itself with issues and concerns surrounding inclusion, anticipate problems and plan strategies for success. This studys primary purpose was to obtain the perceptions of stakeholders in the district regarding a trial of inclusion and to compare their issues and concerns with those encountered in developed countries. The collection of data was conducted over a period of two months and involved interviews, surveys, and focus groups with all stakeholders and analysis of national and local policy. The thesis provided a rich description and detailed analysis of the views of stakeholders regarding issues and concerns about inclusion. Among the findings are that (a) general economic conditions, restructuring programs and medical and social-cultural issues have a huge impact on the implementation of inclusion; (b) schools in the district have few human and material resources to support inclusion; (c) students with/without disabilities and most stakeholders, except teachers, tend to favour inclusion; and (d) the agenda for donor countries complicate educational reform in developing countries.

Abstract:

In May 1675, the local court in the northern Swedish parish of Nordingrå, which had approximately 1,000 inhabitants, held a preliminary investigation on 113 persons accused of witch-craft and superstition. For the majority of the 113, the main accusation was to have travelled to Blåkulla, a place where witches according to Swedish folklore participated in satanic festivities and rites led by the Devil himself. The preliminary investigation was held at the request of The Royal Witch-craft Commission. Nordingrå belonged to the province of Ångermanland, one of the Swedish provinces with the highest number of witch trials in the 1670s. The trials in Nordingrå have, more or less never been examined before, mainly due to the fact that no sentences or penalties were ever imposed.

The purpose of this paper is to examine social relations and social conflicts in Nordingrå with the records from the witch trial 1675 as the primary source. The theoretical background for the paper is Emmanuel Le Roy Laduries study of the Occitan village of Montaillou along with Hannah Arendts theory on the banality of evil.

One of the paper´s main conclusion is that the relations of power can be traced in the trials, but that they, on the other hand, become less significant the further the trials go. One reasonable interpretation of this fact is that the trials in Nordingrå reflects the tendence of juridical centralization in the 17th century.

The social conflicts in the parish are more obvious in the accusations of superstitions than in the accusations of travels to Blåkulla. For example the conclusion can be drawn that at least a number of inhabitants in Nordingrå had a religion on their own, which did not always match the orthodoxy of the Protestant church. At the same time the accusations of superstition do not play a particularly important role in the trials. The main impression of the trials is, on the contrary, that they do not follow a given pattern regarding who can be put on trial, except for the fact that most of the trialed were women. Against the accused, a number of at least 173 witnesses appeared, most of them children and young people under the age of 24. The witnesses in general did not only tell the court which crimes the accused witches had committed, but also which crimes they had committed themselves.

Abstract:
AbstractNasopharyngeal carcinomas (NPC) have unique characteristics with a specific geographic distribution and radiotherapy (RT) is the cornerstone of initial treatment due to its radiosensitive behaviour and deep-seated location. Intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) has become the standard RT technique compared with 2D/3D and could reduce the late toxicities such as xerostomia. We established the international guideline for the delineation of clinical target volumes (CTV) and dose prioritization and constraint guideline for a better implementation of IMRT for NPC. The role of RT in addition to systemic therapy for the initially diagnosed metastatic NPC has recently been investigated in a randomized trial. The meta-analysis MAC-NPC confirmed the role of chemotherapy in addition to RT for NPC and established concomitant chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) as a standard of care in locally advanced (LA) NPC. In the recent actualization of MAC-NPC and network meta-analysis, more chemotherapy (adjuvant or induction) has been suggested to further improve treatment efficacy. However, a randomized trial did not shown survival benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy in addition to CCRT in LA-NPC. More recently, several phase III trials (French GORTEC trial and Chinese trials) showed benefit of induction chemotherapy (PF/TPF/GP) when added to cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy. Preliminary study has failed to show benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy for the patients with detectable plasma Epstein Barr virus (EBV) DNA after chemoradiotherapy. The presentation will also focus on the ongoing trials with association of immune checkpoint inhibitors with chemoradiotherapy and the role of EBV DNA during or after treatment among others.

Abstract:
Increasingly complex marine operations dictate higher need for precise and reliable modelling. For the last decades several different approaches to modelling of ship manoeuvring were developed, including scaled model testing, numerical and empirical methods. Increasingly, time-domain simulation models for ship manoeuvring are developed and used for training and planning of marine operations. Especially when using the simulation models to plan operations, it is essential that the simulation model is properly validated. There is a need for better and more standardized validation methods for such simulation models. A key issue is the uncertainty of the data used in the validation. Typically, the validation will be against full scale trials results. In the study reported in this paper it was found by inspection of repeated tests results that even under relatively calm environmental conditions outcomes of sea trials can be highly uncertain. However, it is very expensive to investigate uncertainty of each type of trial experimentally. Therefore it can be very beneficial to estimate it by means of a simulation model. This paper presents results of analysis of full scale turning circle trials of research vessel “Gunnerus”. Turning circle trials with 20° and 35° rudder angle executed both to starboard and port sides are analyzed. Experimental uncertainty analysis is performed. Effectiveness of IMO correction procedure is discussed. Also paper describes a method for determining uncertainty of trial results due to environmental effects by means of simulation model and compares them with experimental uncertainty. The method is based on Monte-Carlo techniques.

Alumina-forming austenitic (AFA) steels represent a new class of corrosion- and creep-resistant austenitic steels designed to enable higher temperature recuperators. Field trials are in progress for commercially rolled foil with widths over 39cm. The first trial completed 3,000h in a microturbine recuperator with an elevated turbine inlet temperature and showed limited degradation. A longer microturbine trial is in progress. A third exposure in a larger turbine has passed 16,000h. To reduce alloy cost and address foil fabrication issues with the initial AFA composition, several new AFA compositions are being evaluated in creep and laboratory oxidation testing at 650°–800°C and the results compared to commercially fabricated AFA foil and conventional recuperator foil performance.

Abstract:
Carbon fiber composites are getting more and more widely used in aeronautics and astronautics, vessels, blades of wind turbine generators and so on. In this study, carbon fabric as reinforcement and thermoplastic and thermosetting resin as matrix were used to manufacture carbon fiber prepreg to mold the unidirectional carbon fiber sheet composite (Carbon/PA6 and Carbon/Epoxy). Specially, the multi-tensile tests of 90 degree carbon fiber sheet composite specimens with 150 mm gage length were carried out. After the 1st trial, the longer part of the fracture specimen was chosen as the experimental specimen of 2nd trial tensile test. Similarly, the 3rd trial was investigated. The mechanical properties of 90 specimens including tensile strength, elastic modulus and ultimate stain of polished specimens were investigated in the primary research. Then, the effect of trial on the mechanical properties, the comparison of failure probability distribution of ultimate strain of trials, the relation between gage length and tensile strength, tensile strength and ultimate strain were discussed according to the multi-tensile test result of each specimen. Additionally, the interfacial properties were discussed based on the SEM observation on the fracture surface.

Two ice trials were carried out. The time history of location, engine power & RPM(Revolution per minute) etc. during the ice trial and the trajectory of the ship are described in this paper. The measured ice properties are also discussed. The ice trial results were analyzed at different ice thicknesses, ice strengths, and power and speed levels of the ship. The analysis results are compared with model test results and ice trial results. A correction to the target ice thickness was used to compare the power and speed relation in the same ice thickness because it is very easy to know the relative speed performance of ship. The Hamburgische Schiffbau-Versuchs Anstalt (HSVA) method was applied for the correction. The speed of the Araon in big floes is higher than the speed in level ice. The speed after the correction at 10 MW of power and 103 cm of ice thickness was 5.4 knots based on analysis results.

Abstract:
A Deep Sea Cruising AUV “URASHIMA” has been developed by JAMSTEC since 1998. The dimensions and weight are 10m (L), 1.3m (W), 1.5m (H), and about 7.5 tons in air. A main power source device system of AUV “URASHIMA” is a large capacity of lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable battery system or Solid Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) system. AUV “URASHIMA” will be able to cruise for about 100km with Li-ion battery system and it will cruise for about 300km with fuel cell system. The cruising trial used by the fuel cell system will start at the end of 2002. The instruments for science researches are an automatic multi-water-sampling system, a CTDO, a side-scan sonar, a digital still camera with a thermoelectrically cooled CCD image sensor, a TV camera, and so on. Three operation modes, which are UROV mode, acoustic remote control mode and autonomous mode, are available. Those three kinds of modes are used acceding to each development stage and ocean researches. UROV mode is to monitor the state of the vehicle with fiber optics. At the first development stage of AUV “URASHIMA”, we carried out long cruising trial for about 100km and maximum operational depth trial at 3,500m used by Li-ion rechargeable battery system. URASHIMA was succeeded to reach at 3,518m depth of the seafloor at the sea trial of August 2001. We also carried out long cruising trial that was controlled by autonomous mode. Then, URASHIMA was cruised 70km distance at the sea trial of December 2001. We will have a next sea trail on May 2002 for 100km long cruising test. At the next development stage, we will carried out long cruising trial for 300km used by the fuel cell system.

"Effects of Driver Familiarity and Prolonged or Intermittent Right-Side Failure on Level Crossing Safety." In Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics Conference. Abstract:
This paper investigates the adverse effects of familiarity and human factors issues associated with the reliability of low-cost warning devices at level crossings. The driving simulator study featured a repetitive, low workload, monotonous driving task in which there were no failures of the level crossing (control) or prolonged or intermittent right-side failures (where the device reverts to a safe failure mode). The results of the experiment provided mixed support for the familiarity hypothesis. Four of the 23 participants collided with the train when it first appeared on trial 10 but safety margins increased from the first train to the next presentation of a train (trial 12). Contrary to expectations, the safety margins decreased with repeated right-side failure only for the intermittent condition. The limited head movement data showed that participants in the prolonged failure condition were more likely to turn their head to check for trains in the right-side failure trials than in earlier trials where there was no signal and no train. Few control participants turned their head to check for trains when no signal was presented. This research highlights the need to consider repetitive tasks and workload in experimental design and accident investigation at railway level crossings.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents two independent methodologies for defining the seakeeping performance of vessels in various sea conditions. The results of a unique series of sea trials are compared to a new time domain computer program (FREDYN) that predicts ship performance and dangerous operating conditions in extreme seas. Both methods independently define the seakeeping performance during various ship operations such as transiting and weather deck operations. Sea trials were conducted during various operations for two classes of small ships (less than 220 feet long) in a wide range of sea conditions. The use of improved trial procedures at specific geographical locations enabled these trials to establish operational limitations and provide challenging environmental conditions for this size ships. The computer prediction (FREDYN) was developed by the Cooperative Research Navies (CRNAV) Dynamic Stability Working Group to provide a unique method of predicting seakeeping performance in extreme sea conditions. Dangerous events such as broaching and capsizing are able to be predicted, along with more accurate motion predictions than in the past. This method will be especially useful in the future for the designs of small ships. The operational performance of ships A and B begins to decline in sea state 5 conditions as indicated by higher motion levels as well as coursekeeping and broaching problems. Capsizing events are predicted for ship A in sea state 6 and 7 conditions; and for ship B in sea state 7 conditions. The good agreement between the sea trial results and FREDYN predictions adds greatly to the credibility of the predictions of these events.

Abstract:
Introduction: Tension headache (TTS), the most common type of primary headache, is characterized by tightness pain, typically bilateral, lasting hours or days, significantly impairing daily activities. Objectives: To review the literature on the use of acupuncture in the management of TTS, evaluating its safety and efficacy. Design and setting: A systematic review conducted at the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás. Methods: A systematic literature review was performed in the PubMed, EMBASE and Virtual Health Library databases, with the terms: “Tension-Type Headache AND Acupuncture”. Randomized studies and clinical trials published in the last 10 years were selected. Results: Two studies, one clinical trial and one randomized trial, concluded that combining acupuncture with another therapy involving movement, such as stretching, physical therapy techniques, or relaxation training, led to reduced pain intensity and improved quality of life in patients with TTS. In contrast, other randomized clinical trials concluded that relaxation training decreased the intensity, frequency of attacks, and adjunctive symptoms of headache (sleep and vitality) more than acupuncture. Finally, acupuncture was compared with the simulated control process in the prevention of TTS, but there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups evaluated. Conclusion: The literature indicated that the combination of acupuncture with other therapeutic options was safe and effective in the management and prevention of TTS. Studies with greater scientific rigor should be conducted for a better understanding of this therapeutic option.

Abstract:
Introduction: Chronic Low Back Pain is a condition associated with changes in different brain regions, related to pain, posture and emotions. Objectives: Review the current literature about the efficiency and safety of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in the management of Chronic Low Back Pain. Design and setting: This is a systematic review of the literature conducted at the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás. Methods: A systematic review of literature was conducted in the PubMed, BVS and Lilacs databases, with the following research strategy: “(Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation or TDCS) and (Low Back Pain)”. Randomized studies, clinical trials and case reports published in the last 10 years were selected. Results: A clinical trial showed that TDCS of the primary motor cortex (M1) for 20 minutes improved posture, balance and pain intensity of patients with CLBP. Also, a randomized clinical trial concluded that this technique, at 2-mA intensity, showed a significant reduction in CLBP. On the other hand, two randomized clinical trials showed that the results obtained did not support the application of the TDCS method for the treatment of CLBP, since the observed groups did not show considerable difference after stimulation. In addition, another double-blind controlled study also showed that TDCS over M1 did not influence the quality of patients’ CLBP. Conclusion: A conflict was noticed between the conclusions of the articles used to compose this review, that’s why more studies with scientific rigor are needed.

Mudge, Christopher, Bradley Sartain, Kurt Getsinger, and Michael Netherland. Efficacy of florpyrauxifen-benzyl on dioecious hydrilla and hybrid water milfoil - concentration and exposure time requirements. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), September 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/42062.

Full text
Abstract:
This study conducted small-scale trials under various concentration and exposure time (CET) scenarios to determine florpyrauxifen-benzyl activity on dioecious hydrilla and hybrid watermilfoil and determine impact on water stargrass and elodea. Hydrilla treated with 12, 24, or 36 μg active ingredient (a.i.) L⁻¹ florpyrauxifen-benzyl and exposed for 12, 24, or 48 hr under outdoor mesocosm conditions was reduced in biomass by 30-75% at 8 weeks after treatment (WAT). An additional hydrilla trial at the same herbicide concentrations, but under longer exposures (24, 72, or 168 hr), resulted in 33–85% plant control. Under indoor conditions, hybrid watermilfoil dry weight decreased 98–100% with subsurface applications of florpyrauxifen-benzyl under CET scenarios of 3–12 μg a.i. L⁻¹ at 3–24 hr exposure times in a growth chamber trial. Under shorter exposure periods (0.5–4 hr) in a follow-up trial, low doses (3–9 μg a.i. L⁻¹) achieved 50–100% control of hybrid watermilfoil. In the same trial, the nontarget species water stargrass and elodea proved relatively tolerant to the florpyrauxifen-benzyl at doses up to 6 μg a.i. L⁻¹ (4 hr exposure) and 9 μg a.i. L⁻¹ (1 hr exposure). These small-scale trials demonstrate florpyrauxifen-benzyl’s potential to selectively manage invasive species.

Abstract:
Qualitative data centered on patients’ experiences and perspectives typically go uncollected in clinical trial settings. Yet patients’ treatment experiences offer complementary insights and context on topics such as disease management, treatment gaps, and previous treatments outside of those gathered in traditional patient-reported outcome questionnaires. Qualitative interviews can capture patients’ perceptions of treatment needs, more fully explore meaningful changes experienced as a result of treatment, and reveal outcomes that are most important to patients. Asking patients detailed questions can provide insight into the “why” of a patient’s expressed thought or feeling. The inclusion of patient interviews within clinical trials is a relatively new and evolving field of research. This article delineates the types of data that may be collected during interviews with clinical trial participants and outlines two approaches to conducting qualitative research in the clinical trial setting, with a focus on maximizing the value of the resulting data.
