Abstract:
Stabilized and semi-stabilized phosphoranes can be subjected to solventless Wittig reactions with carbaldehydes. Simple heating of a mixture of added components at 100 °C in an electric oven gives the corresponding olefins in good yield. Alternatively, the Wittig reactions can be carried out in a biphasic medium under ultrasonication. In this case, the Wittig products can be isolated by simple evaporation of the organic phase without additional work-up.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Koktava, Rachel-Louise Kvertus. "Aspects of the gauged, twisted, SL(2|1)/SL(2|1) Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model." Thesis, Durham University, 1996. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5291/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis we examine some of the interesting aspects of the Wess-Zumino- Novikov-Witten model when this model has been gauged and its energy tensor twisted by the addition of the derivative of one of its Cartan subalgebra valued currents. Specifically we consider the group valued model with the group taken as 5^(211) which is the Lie super group used to describe N = 2 supersymmetry. This model is advocated as being a good and natural description of the N = 2 superstring (also known as the charged spinning string, or N = 2 fermionic string) when it tensors an additional topological system of ghosts. The evidence for this assertion is presented by gauging and twisting the model and then extracting the N = 2 super Liouville action by the method of Hamiltonian reduction. The connection between the 5L (2|1)/5L (2|1) Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model and field theory is made through its current algebra. As is true of many super groups there exists more than one interpretation of the Dynkin diagram for the algebra of 5L(2|1) and this results in more that one set of currents for this model. The classical and quantum currents in free field form are found in both cases, as is the highly non-linear transformation by which the two sets of currents are related. An analysis of a section of the cohomology of physical states of the model is undertaken. It is shown that the additional topological ghost system that tensors the gauged, twisted SL (2\l) model when it describes the N = 2 string only contributes a vacuum state to the overall cohomology, so reducing the analysis. As the 5L(2|1)/5L(2|1) Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model is a topological field theory its spectrum of physical states lie in the cohomology class defined with respect to the BRST charge. The spectrum formed from the free field currents composes the so called Wakimoto module and this is calculated via the BRST formalism.

Almendarez, Deborah Lee. "Exploring the Use of Texting within San Antonio Texas Police Emergency Reporting." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2632.

Abstract:
The introduction of wireless device text messaging, as an alternative to a citizen placing a telephone call for police help, generates the need for new polices and processes relevant to police call-taker, police dispatcher, and police officer response to reported emergencies. Little scholarly research explores the policy issues around the use of text 9-1-1 within public safety answering point operations. Using systems theory as the foundation, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the potential use of written communication via a wireless device text message for reporting a police emergency. Research questions focused on the reciprocal relationships in communication used to initiate an emergency call for service and police response. A maximum variation purposeful sampling technique was used to recruit 16 individuals with knowledge of placing, receiving, or responding to a police emergency request, for this study. Data collection methods also included police call-taker observations of four active 9-1-1 calls, 9-1-1 and police radio recordings of the calls, physical artifacts, and documentation. All data were inductively coded and then subjected to a thematic analysis procedure. Findings indicate that text messages may be a preferred option in certain types of situations, such as home invasions, where the victim may not be able to speak to call-takers as a matter of protecting personal safety. However, the use of text messages is also perceived as creating a potential for delayed police response due to the asynchronous nature of the process. Recommendations to police executives and policy makers include enhancing call-taker training and citizen instruction prior to the text messaging integration, thereby promoting positive social change through enhancing public safety by providing another mechanism for direct citizen-police communication.

Abstract:
We generalize Rost's theory of cycle modules using the Milnor-Witt K-theory instead of the classical Milnor K-theory. We obtain a (quadratic) setting to study general cycle complexes and their (co)homology groups. Moreover, we prove that the heart of Morel-Voevodsky stable homotopy category over a perfect field (equipped with its homotopy t-structure) is equivalent to the category of Milnor-Witt cycle modules. Finally, we explore a conjecture of Morel about the Bass-Tate transfers defined on the contraction of a homotopy sheaf and prove that the conjecture is true with rational coefficients. We also study the relations between (contracted) homotopy sheaves, sheaves with generalized transfers and MW-homotopy sheaves, and prove an equivalence of categories. As applications, we describe the essential image of the canonical functor that forgets MW-transfers and use theses results to discuss the conservativity conjecture in A1-homotopy due to Bachmann and Yakerson

Abstract:
Two-dimensional flow simulations of shear driven liquid film by turbulent air flow in a duct is performed using the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes and continuity equations along with the k-ε turbulence model and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) model that are part of the FLUENT-CFD code. The purpose of this effort is to determine the suitability of using this model for predicting the measured results of Wittig et al. [1, 2]. In these studies, optical means are used to measure shear driven liquid film velocities along with the liquid film thickness, and measurements are reported for different air velocities and liquid film flow rates. The simulated results will be compared with measured values, and the suitability of the VOF model for simulating such flow will be assessed in this study.

Abstract:
The presented work is concerned with two-phase flows similar to those in prefilming airblast atomizers and combustors employing film vaporization. Correlations for the multi-component mixture properties and models for the calculations of the multi-component evaporation were implemented in a well tested elliptic finite-volume code GAP-2D (Wittig et al., 1992) utilizing time-averaged quantities, k,ε-turbulence model, wall functions, and curve-linear coordinates in the gas phase, adiabatic or diabatic conditions at the film plate, partially turbulent velocity profile, uniform temperature and rapid mixing approach in the wavy film. This new code GAP-2K was tested for stability, precision, and grid independence of the results by applying it to a turbulent hot air flow over a two-component liquid film, a mixture of water and ethanol in different concentrations. Both simulations and experiments, were carried out over a wide range of inlet conditions, such as inlet pressure (1–2.6 bar), inlet temperature (298–573 K), inlet air velocity (30–120 m/s), initial liquid flow rate (0.3–1.2 cm2/s), and initial ethanol concentration (20–75 % mass). Profiles of temperature-, gas velocity, and concentration of the evaporating component normal to the film, and the development of the film temperature, the static pressure, the liquid flow rate and the liquid compound along the film plate have been measured and compared with the simulation showing a good match.

Abstract:
In this exploratory research project, our team’s goal was to design and begin validation of a measurement approach that could provide indication of a student’s ability to transfer their mathematics understanding to future, more advanced mathematical topics. Assessing transfer of learning in mathematics and other topics is an enduring challenge. We sought to invent and validate an approach to transfer that would be relevant to improving Cignition’s product, would leverage Cignition’s use of online 1:1 tutoring, and would pioneer an approach that would contribute more broadly to assessment research.
