Abstract:
Strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa Duch.) seedlings from a factorial mating design were tested in each of two locations using two propagule types (seedlings and runners). Genotypic correlations were used to indicate G × E interaction across these locations and propagation systems and to predict correlated responses between selection under specific conditions and commercial propagation. A combined index on relatives was constructed and used to select four groups of individuals—one for each location-propagule combination—for each of two production traits. Comparison was then made with realized respo

Abstract The original ‘Brooks’ cherry (Prunus avium L.) seedling was evaluated at the Wolfskill Ranch of the University of California, Davis from 1970 to 1985. Clones of the original seedling have been evaluated for fruit quality in Contra Costa County since 1978 and in Fresno County at the University's Kearney Agricultural Center since 1981. ‘Brooks’ registered its most outstanding performance at the Kearney Field Station.

The article aims to explore the phenomenon of the “Nestbeschmutzer” in the context of Austrian victim theory. The term was coined in post-war Austria to describe authors who, in defiance of politicians and society, called for a reckoning with the country’s Nazi past. Two literary works are representative of this theme, Hans Lebertʾs Die Wolfshaut (‘The Wolfskin’) and Thomas Bernhardʾs Auslöschung. Ein Zerfall (Extinction), were selected for analysis. Both authors challenge the myth of Austria as Hitlerʾs first victim and expose the post-war silence in their country regarding Austrian involveme

The study revolves around the ways in which the texts are told and, especially, who is seeing the events narrated and the implications of this. In the context of the image of the man «in a wolfskin coat and on a gray horse», we see the tribal group of Bori (in Chinese texts also known as Fule), one of the militant components of the ancient Turkic khaganates, who retreated to the west after heavy wars on the banks of the Orkhon. This chapter has investigates the case of the wolfskin-wearing Hero of Temesa, the vengeful ghost-demon of Odysseus’ crewman Polites. It is argued that the figure should be viewed as a werewolf amongst other ancient werewolves. It is important to disaggregate the various accounts of the Hero and to differentiate between them, including the two offered side-by-side by Pausanias, the first a narrative, the second an exposition of an image. Both of these accounts align in an informative way with a productive story-type in which champions deliver victims from a usually serpentine monster. Careful

This chapter traces the persistent association between werewolves, ghosts and the dead in the ancient world. As to werewolves proper, Herodotus’ application of the word goētes to his werewolf Neuri, in addition to saluting their ability to transmute their form, probably also implies that they engaged in ghost- or soul-manipulation. Virgil’s werewolf Moeris is a raiser of ghosts. Petronius’ werewolf story is richly decked out with the imagery of ghosts and the underworld. Marcellus of Side’s medical ‘lycanthropes’ roll around in graveyards, and indeed it would appear to be on the basis of this
