Abstract:
Jordan Wolfson’s Real Violence (2017) is a brief virtual reality (VR) piece that depicts the artist beating a man to death with a baseball bat. Wolfson uses the haptic possibilities of VR to rapidly induce nausea in the viewer, an act that both relies on empathetic aspects of VR simulation – ‘empathy’ here linked with its history in German aesthetic psychology as Einfühlung – and is a confrontational distancing that questions the politics of ‘empathetic’ immersion. Real Violence demonstrates how contemporary judgments of VR and empathy repeat debates from the late 19th and early 20th centuries

Abstract:
Empirical evidence that taxes influence firms' capital structures has been elusive. Scholes and Wolfson (1989) argue that refinancing costs that accumulate with age affect the time-series variation in firms' tax-induced financing and investment policies. Specifically, they predict that as capital structures gradually become more constrained over time, firms' financing decisions will become less sensitive to their marginal tax rates; and that as firms are increasingly impeded from adjusting their capital structures, they will resort to relying more on investmentrelated tax shields. This study provides evidence on the time-series variation in the rate at which firms move toward their leverage targets that is consistent with this prediction. H. A. Wolfson arrived in the United States at 16 from the Lithuanian region of the Russian Empire and at Harvard as a freshman five years later. Among the most important historians of western religious philosophy, he published on contemporary issues only until 1925 and even then only rarely. Nevertheless, his 1918 article, “Pomegranates”, deserves attention. Wolfson clearly followed debates about the American ethnic future. He carved out an original and unexpected position on that issue,

Abstract:
Blackett and Wolfson studied the near-ring Aff (V) consisting of all affine transformations of a vector space V. This notion is generalized here, and the rear-ring Aff (G) consisting of affine-like maps of a nilpotent group G is introduced. The ideal structure, and the multiplication rule for Aff (G) are determined. Finally a near-ring S is introduced which generalized both Aff (G), and Gonshor's abstract affine near-rings. The ideals of S are determined.

These “kabbalistic musings on time, truth, and death” originated as the Taubman Lectures delivered at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2001. Wolfson summarizes them in his preface to Alef, Mem, Tau (henceforth AMT): “The goal of my lectures was to illumine the nexus of time, truth, and death elicited from the symbolic imaginary of the Jewish esoteric tradition known by both practitioners and scholars as kabbalah” (xi). Without attempting further to isolate an “argument,” I can, at least, sketch for the potential reader some salient characteristics of these lectures.
