Abstract:
Women’s press has been analysed as an element of the Polish media system by representatives of various fields of research. There have been studies of press content, formal features of individual magazines, ownership and definition issues, and internal segmentations, amongst others. This research attempts to fill a gap in the study of women’s press content; it aims to show how the COVID-19 was presented in women’s press. As an introduction to the main research, this article examines a carefully selected study sample with individual sub-segments of women’s press each represented by a leading magazine. Research objectives include determining the ways in which COVID-19 is presented in certain women’s press titles belonging to different sub-segments, analysing the selection and presentation of information to potential readers in regards to their needs, and establishing the functions of COVID-19 guidance in women’s press.

Abstract:
The article studies the structure of the contemporary Russian provincial magazines for women, determines their typological basis, examines establishment and development of the conception of women’s press in various historical periods, and, by the example of the media landscape of provincial magazines, analyzes the features of publicity within women’s community in a particular region. Provincial press, being closer to the reader and able to form a targeted content, has a great informational potential and accurately reflects the community’s interests. Therefore, one of its tasks is to optimize the media landscape of a local female community as its publicity factor. This adds to the topicality of the research. The study sample included 33 contemporary women's magazines from 17 provinces of Russia. The aim was to determine the typological features of the magazines and estimate the impact of women’s press on solving the topical gender issues of the Russian woman. The results show prevalence of specialized women’s magazines in provincial press, which correlates with the general trend in the periodical press. Meanwhile, their typological structure is not optimized enough: the periodicals do not always match the audience's demand, and do not take all opportunities for that, either. Besides, multitopic provincial periodicals find it difficult to compete with well-known national and foreign magazines. One of the positive trends is the development of periodicals focused on careers, businesswomen and women in politics.

Abstract:
The main objectives of this research are: to summarize the studies in women’s press carried out by Ukrainian and Russian scientists in the late XX and early XXI centuries; to identify the main trends in research on this issue; to identify the common and different trends in Ukrainian and Russian studies; to define the ground for strengthening research interest to a segment of women’s press. The source base for this study consists of the Ukrainian and Russian dissertations, monographs and research articles. Methods. For this study the authors used the following methods: bibliographic; methods of comparison and classification; theoretical-typological and historical-typological methods; secondary analysis of data derived from other studies. Within the bibliographic review we analysed the academic works by Ukrainian and Russian scientists, who explored the women’s press. With that, the main focus was on those scientific works, which significantly contributed to the studies in women’s press or strongly indicated the formation of new trends in the relevant research process. The following electronic resources were used as the main source to find academic publications devoted to the women’s press: “Elibrary.ru”, “Man and Science – Library of Dissertations on Humanitarian Sciences”, “Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine”. The scientific papers devoted to the studies in women’s press were classified in accordance with the issues they mainly focused on. The papers were presented in chronological order, within the corresponding thematic areas. Comparison and classification methods were used to identify the similar and different trends in development of the studies in women’s press in Ukrainian and Russian science. Theoretical-typological method made it possible to correlate the research results with the typological conceptions of women’s periodicals. Historical-typological method was used to show the role of contemporary studies in the history of women’s press. Results and Conclusions. A bibliographic review of Ukrainian and Russian academic works dedicated to women’s press was performed. The authors analyzed research papers of the late XX and early XXI cent.; identified the main trends in research on this issue; found common and different trends in Ukrainian and Russian studies; defined the ground for strengthening research interest to a segment of women’s press. At present, the women’s press is a subject of many humanities studies in Ukraine and Russia; women’s periodicals are studied by philologists, historians, sociologists, in cultural studies. The strengthening of research interest to the field of women’s periodicals in Ukraine and Russia was mainly stimulated by the following factors: the developments in socio-political situation that influenced the system of media as a whole; and the expansion of women’s press segment, strengthening of its economic significance and of its impact on the audience. Some similar trends are observed in the development of women’s press in two countries that stipulates the similar trends in research on this subject. Scientists of the both countries mostly conduct the theoretical-typological, historical-typological, philological, gender, linguistic and sociological analysis of the women’s periodicals. Developments in the segment of women’s press and changes in its impact on the audience define the key areas of research process. During the first decade of the XXI century, scientists focused their studies on the typological transformation of the system of women’s press and on the developed of classification of the women’s periodicals. Later, the main interest refocused on the impact of women’s press on mental, behavioral and communication characteristics of the audience. The Ukrainian scientists perform better in the scientific theory of women’s press, because their studies are based not only on own theoretical experience, but also take into account the results of Russian colleagues, contributing to the breadth and quality of research, and making it possible to pay more attention to the new areas of research. At the same time, the majority of Russian scientists use in their research on women’s presses a narrower set of academic sources that leads to the certain uniformity and similarity of the results. The generalizations and conclusions of the current research can supplement the theoretical knowledge in the field of women’s press, facilitate tracing the dynamics of research interest on the corresponding subject in Ukraine and Russia, and contribute to the determination of the prospective areas of studies in women’s press.

Abstract:
The analysis of the content of local periodicals makes it possible to indicate two types of women’s issues. One presents both historical as well as modern images of women, while the other discusses women’s issues in relation to political, economic and social phenomena and events. The author of the paper attempts to answer the question of what women have found interesting and what they want to read about; whether we are dealing with sexism in the local press; whether publications on women’s issues are more frequently written by men or women; whether there is a set division of positions and competences available to women in the operation of the local press and whether the fact that editors-in-chief are women influences the quality and quantity of women’s topics discussed. The conclusions corroborate the main hypothesis, namely that although there are certain exceptions, the local press largely reinforces a stereo- typical approach to women.

Abstract:
Abstract The studies conducted over recent decades on media sports coverage indicatedmajor underrepresentation of women’s sports. The underrepresentation of women’s sports in the media is aligned with the perception of sport as a masculine construct with sportswomen as the ‘other’. However, most studies were conducted in English-speaking countries. In this article we present our findings of press media coverage in Poland. The aim of the study was to provide an analysis of sports press coverage in the largest Polish daily, Gazeta Wyborcza, with respect to gender inequality. The chosen method was content analysis. The results show an underrepresentation of women’s sports in the examined press coverage – only 12.5% of all articles concerned female sports. Qualitative analysis demonstrates that the articles differed in terms of the athletes’ gender as well. The study highlighted the gender-dependent nature of the examined sports press coverage in Poland.

On the example of the women’s magazines in Yiddish “Yidishe Froyenvelt” (1902- 1903), “Di Froy” (Vilnius1925-1933), “Froyen-Shtim” (Warsaw 1925) and “Di Froyen-Velt” (New York 1913) this article presents: • how feminist postulates are connected with questions of Jewish identity in a religious and political context • how the model image of a modern Jewish woman is presented • what the main spheres of feminist interests presented in the magazines are (a struggle for equal rights within the Jewish community as well as other social spheres, searching for and presenting outstanding women in the Jewish and world history, descriptions of women’s professional activities, psychological analysis of a woman's nature, establishing ties and a feeling of solidarity between women’s movements of other nations) • how the traditional women's roles are presented (mother, wife, housewife) • what degree of women’s participation in the edition of these periodicals is (a list of articles' authoresses and literature works appearing on columns of the periodicals) • whether and how a feminist discourse affects a language structure of the periodicals Comparing magazines from the beginning of the 20th century and the latter part of 1920s the article answers the question what direction did Jewish feminism evolve to and what content rose or fell in importance.

Abstract:
The purpose of the project is to create a model for improved and expanded participation in an activist network, The Ada Songor Salt Women's Association (ASSWA) by enhancing communications. ASSWA is an organization of Brave Women (Yihi katseme) salt winners from the Songor lagoon area in south eastern Ghana. They are committed to ensuring that the lagoon and its harvest is a resource for all. ASSWA has found over time that to defend the lagoon and the livelihood of the 45 communities around it, requires that they articulate the experiences and demands of women and marginalized members of the community. This study exmines communications of the ASSWA network within the context of Communications for Change. describes the dialectic within the network, how members discuss issues and resolve differences, how they define and articulate their programmes and demands. It examines if the mobilisation and activism of poor rural women can challenge the dominant discourses of traditional development and patriarchy. Key to learning is abstraction, the linking of issues and abstracting of the problematic causative mechanisms, the project studies this process within the ASSWA context by looking at how the network and its members link their struggles with broader social movements within Ghana and beyond. The continued agency of the ASSWA is challenged by the poverty of the community within which it operates and by its ability to communicate effectively locally, nationally and internationally. As it stands now, the organisation is active but long-term sustainability may be compromised by the lack of dialogic interactions at all levels of engagement. This paper creates a model (theory) for more active participation in based on their identified priorities, needs and requirements, in such a way as to promote ‘power participation’. The research was conducted using a critical realist ontological framework and qualitative interview research methodologies

Abstract:
This research is a quantitative content analysis and qualitative rhetorical analysis of U.S. Mennonite women’s rhetoric in two prominent Mennonite publications, The Gospel Herald and The Mennonite, between 1963 and 1977. During this time period 150,000 Mennonites considered themselves members of the church. The context of each paper was identified through content analysis Women who chose to submit articles to the church press faced enormous obstacles when promoting gender equality. Gender equality was a direct challenge to Mennonite’s traditional view of "divine order," which is a hierarchy of God, man, then woman. Due to the these obstacles Mennonite female authors who were supportive of gender equality took on a facilitating tone and a double identity persona comprised of both Mennonite and feminist. Mennonite women who supported a more traditional view of gender roles had an instructional tone and a "selfhate" persona. Invitational rhetorical theory helps to explain the rhetorical choices made my female rhetors during this time period.

O Lar was a periodical produced between 1926 and 1932 in Cidade de Goiás by women writers interested in stimulating literary production among women. This journal produced and reproduced speeches supported by religious, political and medical institutions in an era characterized by the progress and politics and economics modernization of Brazilian society. This dissertation aims to untangle this complex network of discourses that has been imposed on men and women, investigating the representations and, mainly, analyzing the political practices that these speeches made possible. In this context, the journal defended women's education with the intention of encouraging the good performance of women inside and outside the home, preparing them for the fulfillment of maternal and matrimonial functions, but also strengthening feminist arguments in favor of the exercise of political rights. Our hypothesis is to consider that, far beyond a pedagogical tool to raise women's awareness for domestic life, this journal was also a political instrument, an arena for women intellectual activity in public life. In this sense, the newspaper O Lar, under the prerogative of the nation's development, encouraged the participation of these women in the public life of the country, not only within the family, but also to a certain extent, beyond the family institution.

Abstract:
India is the world’s largest democracy, one of the fastest growing economies and an enormous market for newspapers. It is also a country with deeply rooted gender biases where women are highly discriminated and marginalized at all levels of the society. The media is considered an important agent of power. Therefore this study focuses on how and to what extent the three Indian newspapers Hindustan Times, The Hindu and Times of India report on and approach gender inequality and women’s empowerment issues. How do journalists look upon their role and the role of the press in the women’s empowerment process? A quantitative content analysis was performed during five weeks (October 18 –November 21, 2010) and 69 articles that highlight gender inequality and women’s empowerment were found, collected and coded. This content analysis is combined with a qualitative method. Two informant interviews and six respondent interviews with journalists are included in the study. The most common main topics of the articles found were Law and amendments, Women’s movement, Political power, Reproductive health and Development. Five out of six interviewed reporters believe that their newspapers have a major impact on its readership and all six respondents were of the opinion that their newspapers encourage reporting on these matters. Although they believe that media’s overall influence is limited. The Hindu and Times of India report more on gender inequality and women’sempowerment issues than Hindustan Times does and some of the respondents express that The Hindu promotes development journalism more than the other two newspapers do.

The present thesis intends to analyze female columns written by the writer and the journalist Clarice Lispector under two distinct pseudonyms and as a ghost-writer for three different newspapers from Rio de Janeiro in the 50’s and 60’s decades of the XX century. This analysis seeks to trace the female representation drawn from these columns for understanding of the women’s profile considered ideal at the time proposed. After the establishment of the conception of female disclosed by these pages is intended to show how the media acted on as a regulatory instance of the social field, responsible for maintaining an order of normatively anchored in naturalized notions through the discourse circulating at the time, which preached the role of the women as housekeepers and the men as breadwinners.

Abstract:
This research is a counting of the reports present in the magazine REALIDADE about women and gender, and the analysis of how the periodical treated these subjects all over its existence. It was searched here the inclusion of the magazine in the press history, as long as its relations with the economic and political power, since the launch in 1966 to the break down in 1976. The gender issues were included in this context, under the view of women’s representations spread by the press and women’s liberation process, both of them recurrent themes in REALIDADE. The analysis was divided among the questions that involve the intimate life of women (sexuality and family) and the female performance outside the home (work and politics) and the male view directed to them. The intension with this work is to examine the stories spread by the press, taking into account the journalists filters and the influences of Editora Abril’s owners and the civil-military dictatorship established. With this approach, it’s expected that this study contribute to the visibility of women in a time of National Security Doctrine, when the small resistances of behavior were in risk of being considered a threat to the State. Even so, many women kept fighting to the reach of more rights and freedom.

Through of the journals of the women’s press that emerged in the decades between 1820 and 1840 in Minas Gerais, Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro – O Espelho Diamantino, O Mentor das Brasileiras, Espelho das Brasileiras, A mulher do Simplicio, A Filha Unica da Mulher do Simplicio e A Mineira no Rio de Janeiro – the general thesis aims to analyze the different representations of women in Brazil in the first half of the nineteenth century. In a context marked by the strengthening of the public opinion and the gestation of a new political culture, the women’s press helped the spread of a political and moral education, strongly based on liberal ideals and values, which ultimately legitimize female image appropriate to act in privacy and help in the fight fon an independent nation in construction. It was offered to women, therefore, the necessary principles to act like mothers, wives and patriots.

Abstract:
The burgeoning of a new print form—the women’s press—in early twentieth-century China signaled a radical transformation in the ways of women’s literary and cultural production. This dissertation focuses on the discursive and imaginative space afforded by the women’s press. It explores in the women’s journals the processes of knowledge production and circulation that re/formulated the notions of gender and national identity. I examine writings by women and also by men writing in a feminine voice or assuming a female identity. In addition, I include writings that deploy “woman” as a trope through which authors express concerns of national salvation, social transformation, or Chinese modernization. The dissertation shows how experiences and expressions of “modernity” intersect with women’s print culture, and how the women’s press mediates a mixed gendered space for both women and men authors to bring into light a wide range of concerns at a critical historical juncture as Chinese modernity unfolded. How and why did women collaborate, reconcile, or contest with men in their writings or debates on themes related to feminine literary tradition, nationalism, feminism, ethnicity, and the female body to envision and construct “modern” Chinese women? In order to answer these questions, this thesis examines in the women’s press the multifarious writings by various groups of women, including “traditionally” literate women, “progressive” feminist activists, “ethnic” Manchu women reformers, “new-style” urban professionals, and “modern” female students. By reexamining prevailing assumptions regarding the relationship between Chinese feminism and nationalism, the “modern” production of women’s literature, and the masculinist formation of the New Woman, this analysis seeks to both highlight women’s agency and subjectivities in their political and cultural engagements and to illustrate the complexity and multivalence in the imaginings of modern Chinese women. Throughout, I argue that the women’s press provides a productive site for us to understand gender, women’s writing, and modernity in late Qing and early Republican China.

Abstract:
This PhD explores the experience of female journalists working in the Saudi Arabian press. It looks at the difficulties they face as women journalists, their motives for working in this area and their writings. The research discusses how the culture gender segregation in Saudi Arabia impacts upon Saudi media representations of gender stereotypes and the role of print media (the press) in exposing women’s issues to the public and forming public opinion. I utilised a media studies’ approach adopting an Islamic feminist perspective. I generated data from indepth interviews with seven Saudi female journalists working in Saudi press, who discuss female-related topics as well as content analysis of related press articles. The analysis indicated that the Saudi culture of extreme gender segregation has impacted on the experience of female journalists, particularly on their ability to compete with male journalists. As my analysis argues, my participants report experiencing female segregation and discrimination mainly affecting their pay, job opportunities, promotion, availability and access to information. My findings further suggest that the media in Saudi Arabia is the most direct venue for women to express their views and discuss their issues. In accordance with previous studies in the field, my study reveals that Saudi Arabian women interpret feminism within the boundaries of their specific culture and Islamic standpoint. Lastly, I discuss how current political, social and economic reforms in the region, which influence women’s status in the public arena, are reflected in the Saudi press.

Abstract:
This essay surveys and analyzes the expansion of the nineteenth-century women’s press and discusses the evolving acceptance and response to women’s interests in the wider British press. Industrialization, cheaper printing processes, the growth of literacy, and new groups of middle-class women with pocket money, leisure time, and desire for social mobility created an increasingly diverse marketplace for women’s reading and writing during the nineteenth century. A few women’s periodicals emerged in Britain in the decades following the first women’s magazine in 1693, but not until the 1830s did women readers become a substantial commercial consideration for publishers. The basic offerings for women’s periodicals included fashion news, sentimental literature, needlework, court activities, and light feature essays and clippings about history, geography, nature, and religion. Throughout the century, articles debating the political, social, and economic problems of womanhood also appeared in the women’s press, and the discussion often filtered into more general newspapers and journals. Eventually, changing notions of what women should be, do, and think produced new opportunities. Publishers of newspapers and periodicals targeted toward men began to realize the financial potential in accommodating interests of new women readers.

Abstract:
Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of different resistance training (RT) volumes on muscle strength and functional capacity in breast cancer survivors (BCS) undergoing hormone therapy (tamoxifen® oranastrozol). Methods: A total of 13 untrained women breast cancer survivors were randomized to one of the following TR groups: high resistance training volume (HRTV: 6 women; 57.0±8.3 years old; height: 1.59±0.0 m; body mass 63.7±7.61 kg) or low resistance training volume (LRTV: 7 women; 55.1±7.4 years old; height: 1.58 ±0.0 m; body mass: 59.8±15.1 kg). Participants performed a full-body RT routine (e.g. leg press, bench press, lat pulldown, stiff, and sit-up) once a week for 8 weeks. All exercise sets were performed until momentary muscle failure within a range of predefined repetitions in both groups HRTV (12–15 repetitions) and LRTV (6–8 repetitions), in a total of three sets for each exercise. Upper and lower limb strength was evaluated by the 10-repetition maximum test using the bench press and leg press, respectively. Functional capacity was assessed by the Timed Up and GO test. Results: Both groups showed changes in performance variables (bench press — F=36.35, p<0.001), and in functional capacity (F=13.84, p=0.003), regardless of protocol used (HRTV and LRTV), with no differences between groups. Conclusion: Both protocols used in the present study (HRTV and LRTV) when prescribed in a supervised manner and in minimum weekly doses can contribute to the increase in strength of upper and lower limbs in a similar way and, consequently, can provide improvements in the functional capacity of BCS under hormone therapy treatment.

Abstract:
Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare upper interlimb strength asymmetry in breast cancer women (BCW), with or without lymphedema, using the handgrip strength test and the isometric bilateral bench press (IBBP) test. Methodology: Twenty-two BCW (age 52.04±8.62 years) were enrolled in a cross-sectional study, with a single-day testing. Ten participants with self-reported breast cancer – related lymphedema (BCRL) and 12 participants without BCRL were evaluated for the interlimb strength asymmetry. The average of the best three of four attempts of the handgrip strength and the IBBP was used to compare the maximal voluntary isometric contraction of each limb. To calculate the interlimb strength asymmetry, we used the following formula as a percentage: the modulus of left minus right side divided by the average between sides, then multiplied by 100. For the statistical analysis, we used the nonparametric Mann–Whitney U test for the handgrip strength and the independent t-test for IBBP. Results: The handgrip strength in BCW with lymphedema (27.62%±15.5%) showed a higher interlimb strength asymmetry than BCW without lymphedema (12.37%±16.29%; p=0.021). However, there was no difference in IBBP (with lymphedema 8.89%±5.81% versus without lymphedema 9.84%±7.98%, p=0.759). Conclusion: BCW with lymphedema might have higher interlimb strength asymmetry assessed by the handgrip strength test compared with BCW without lymphedema, but not in a multi-compound movement such as IBBP. More studies are necessary to confirm our findings.

Abstract:
Introduction: The activities of security forces and armed forces depend on two parameters: psychological level and physical fitness. These two components are the main parts of the selection procedure. Physical fitness is a topic to be discussed, especially in regard to security forces or armed forces (Bonneau, Brown 1995; Sörensen et al. 2000). Physical preparation fundamentally affects the performance of a policeman or a soldier and it is associated with stress management and service interventions or combat tasks (Gershon et al. 2008; Darryl 2000). This research is focused on physical fitness of the army forces. Further this research is important not only because it should result in expanding the portfolio and knowledge enriching study fields, such as the Special education of Security Bodies (SESB) and Applied Sport Education of Security Bodies (ASEBS) at the Faculty of Sports Studies of Masaryk University, but it also aspires to be of great contribution for security forces or armed forces themselves (Bugala, Reguli, Čihounková 2015; Reguli, Bugala, Vít 2016). Aim: The aim of the study is to find out the physical fitness level of the Army forces of the Czech Republic. Methodology: Research design as descriptive and quantitative. The data of the physical fitness test was collected from the individual Army forces of the Czech Republic in the last 4 years (2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018). The quantitative data were analysed on the basis of the statistical methods. After executing the basic statistical and normality tests, we focused on ANOVA. The total number of respondents was in 776. The ratio between genders was 698:78. Results: After comparing physical fitness tests with Sit UP, Press Up, Pull Up, Stay in Pull Up, Cooper Test, and Swimming 300m over the past four years, there was no significant change in physical fitness. All disciplines had almost the same value except for the exer-cise with the name Stay in Pull Up. This exercise is for women. Fifteen women were tested in 2015, twenty-five women were tested in 2016, twenty-eight women were tested in 2017 and only ten women were tested in 2018. The small number of women, who tested is caused by the fact, that women are not as common in Army as men. Conclusion: We can say that the emphasis on the physical performance in Security and Army forces is still up to date. We did not notice any significant differences between the years 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 tested. Thanks to this finding, we can state that there is a continuous maintenance of physical fitness in the Czech Republic’s army.

Abstract:
Objective: The aim of this study is to compare the effects of resistance training (RT) on muscle strength (MS), body composition (BC), and anxiety indicators in eutrophic, overweight, and obese breast cancer survivors (BCS). Methodology: Twentysix BCS women (56.07±6.94 years old; body mass index [BMI]: 68.29±11.18 kg), who were undergoing hormone therapy, performed 8 weeks of RT once a week. The BCS were divided into three groups as follows: eutrophic (BMI ≤ 24.4 [23.72±1.41], n=9), overweight (BMI 25–29.9 [27.21±1.26], n=9), and obese (BMI ≥ 30 [33.37±2.06], n=8). For the MS, the 10-repetition maximum test (normalized 10-RM/BM) on the bench press (BP) and the leg press (LP); for BC, the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry; and for anxiety, the state-trait anxiety inventory were performed. For overtime analysis, the paired t-test for MS and BC and the Wilcoxon test for anxiety indicators were conducted. For analyses between groups, the mean difference (∆ [post-baseline]) was calculated using the one-way analysis of variance for MS and BC and the Kruskal– Wallis test for anxiety indicators. Results: There were no differences between the groups. All groups improved on the BP (p≤0.001) and the LP (p<0.001) overtime (eutrophic [BP, ∆=0.050±0.03; LP, ∆=0.401±0.10], overweight [BP, ∆=0.069±0.03; LP, ∆=0.406±0.15], and obese [BP, ∆=0.037±0.02; LP, ∆=0.375±0.11]). In the BC analyses, it was verified and improved only for the eutrophic BCS in the fat percentage (∆=-1.122±1.11, p=0.016) and lean mass (∆=0.650±0.78, p=0.036). There was a significant reduction in the state-trait anxiety in the eutrophic (∆=-7.444±8.13, p=0.030) and obese (∆=-9.125±9.70, p=0.042) groups. Conclusions: All BCS groups improved their MS. The eutrophic BCS may have a better response in BC compared with overweight and obese BCS. With regard to state-trait anxiety, the eutrophic and obese BCS groups showed better response than the overweight BCS group. The results suggest that the eutrophic BCS can present improvements in more components with a weekly session of RT; however, further studies should be performed.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in families self-isolating under incredible stress. Viral containment strategies included school closures with parents left to homeschool their children with few supports from the educational system. Recent data show that those with children at home were more likely to drink heavily during the pandemic (Rodriguez et al., in press). Gaps remain, however, in understanding whether these effects are due to the stresses of homeschooling and whether they extend to cannabis use. Seven-hundred-and-sixty Canadian romantic couples (total N=1520 participants; mean age = 57 years; 50% women) who were self-isolating together during the month of April 2020 were recruited through Qualtrics Panel Surveys. Measures were completed retrospectively in early July 2020; participants were asked to report on their feelings and behavior in April 2020 during lockdown. They completed the GAD-7 (Spitzer et al., 2006) and the PHQ-9 (Kronke et al., 2001) to assess anxiety and depression, brief versions of four subscales of the COVID-19 Stress Scales (Taylor et al., 2020) to assess stress around the pandemic, and the Life Orientation Test – Revised (Chiesi et al., 2013) to assess optimism. They completed a measure of role strain (Statistics Canada, 2015) and a measure of conflict with their partner (Murray et al., 2003). They also completed a validated measure of cannabis use frequency and quantity (Cuttler et al., 2017), as well as two validated items from the Brief Cannabis Motives Measures (Bartel et al., 2020) to assess cannabis use to cope with depression and anxiety, respectively. All measures were completed for a 30-day timeframe during the month of April. Participants also reported on whether they were homeschooling one or more children in Grade 1-12 during the month of April. Data was analyzed with a one-way (homeschooling group) Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) controlling for group differences in age; a Bonferroni-correction was applied to account for multiple tests. Compared to those who did not homeschool (n=1116), those who did homeschool (n=404) experienced significantly more depression (p=.001), more COVID-19-related stress around socioeconomic consequences (p<.001) and traumatic stress (p<.001), and less optimism (p=.002). And those who homeschooled experienced more role strain between their home and work responsibilities (p<.001) and more conflict both toward and from their partner (p’s<.001) than those who did not homeschool. Those who homeschooled also used cannabis significantly more frequently in the month of April than those who did not homeschool (p=.003). Compared to cannabis users who did not homeschool (n=122), cannabis users who did homeschool (n=61) reported more frequent cannabis use to cope with both depression and anxiety (p’s = .003). These findings suggest that unintended consequences of our societal viral containment strategies include more depression, pessimism, role strain, inter-parental conflict, and certain COVID-related stresses, and extend to more frequent cannabis use to cope with negative affect, among parents required to homeschool during the pandemic. These unintended mental health and substance misuse consequences for parents need to be considered when planning for an educational strategy in the fall and for any future waves of the pandemic.

Abstract:
The article clarifies of gender identity stereotypes in modern media. The main gender stereotypes covered in modern mass media are analyzed and refuted. The model of gender relations in the media is reflected mainly in the stereotypical images of men and woman. The features of the use of gender concepts in modern periodicals for women and men were determined. The most frequently used derivatives of these macroconcepts were identified and analyzed in detail. It has been found that publications for women and men are full of various gender concepts that are used in different contexts. Ingeneral, theanalysisofthe concept-maximums and concept-minimum gender and their characteristics is carried out in the context of gender stereotypes that have been forme dand function in the society, system atizing the a ctual presentations. The study of the gender concept is relevant because it reveals new trends and features of modern gender images. Taking into account the special features of gender-labeled periodicals in general and the practical absence of comprehensive scientific studies of the gender concept in particular, there is a need to supplement Ukrainian science with this topic. Gender psychology, which is served by methods of various sciences, primarily sociological, pedagogical, linguistic, psychological, socio-psychological. Let us pay attention to linguistic and psycholinguistic methods in gender studies. Linguistic methods complement intelligence research tasks, associated with speech, word and text. Psycholinguistic methods used in gender psychology (semantic differential, semantic integral, semantic analysis of words and texts), aimed at studying speech messages, specific mechanisms of origin and perception, functions of speech activity in society, studying the relationship between speech messages and gender properties participants in the communication, to analyze the linguistic development in connection with the general development of the individual. Nowhere in gender practice there is the whole arsenal of psychological methods that allow you to explore psychological peculiarities of a person like observation, experiments, questionnaires, interviews, testing, modeling, etc. The methods of psychological self-diagnostics include: the gender aspect of the own socio-psychological portrait, a gender biography as a variant of the biographical method, aimed at the reconstruction of individual social experience. In the process of writing a gender autobiography, a person can understand the characteristics of his gender identity, as well as ways and means of their formation. Socio-psychological methods of studying gender include the study of socially constructed women’s and men’s roles, relationships and identities, sexual characteristics, psychological characteristics, etc. The use of gender indicators and gender approaches as a means of socio-psychological and sociological analysis broadens the subject boundaries of these disciplines and makes them the subject of study within these disciplines. And also, in the article a combination of concrete-historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is implemented. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. Also used is a method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-stamped journals. It was he who allowed quantitatively to identify and explore the features of the gender concept in the pages of periodicals for women and men. A combination of historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is also implemented in the article. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. A method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-labeled journals is also used. It allowed to identify and explore the features of the gender concept quantitatively in the periodicals for women and men. The conceptual perception and interpretation of the gender concept «woman», which is highlighted in the modern gender-labeled press in Ukraine, requires the elaboration of the polyfunctionality of gender interpretations, the comprehension of the metaphorical perception of this image and its role and purpose in society. A gendered approach to researching the gender content of contemporary periodicals for women and men. Conceptual analysis of contemporary gender-stamped publications within the gender conceptual sphere allows to identify and correlate the meta-gender and gender concepts that appear in society.

Egypt: Encourage journalists to cover reproductive health. Population Council, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh2000.1029.

Full text
Abstract:
To raise public awareness of reproductive health (RH) issues, the Population Council’s Frontiers project and the Futures Group’s Policy project jointly organized four press briefings and provided background materials to key journalists from Arabic newspapers and magazines. From May 1999 to June 2000, project staff worked closely with 20 Egyptian journalists, including editors of women’s pages and senior editors. The press briefings covered youth, marriage patterns, contraceptive technology, and menopause. The press kit prepared for each briefing contained fact sheets, reference materials, a contact list of key experts, and an evaluation sheet. To assess RH reporting and track coverage resulting from the intervention, project staff monitored eight major Arabic newspapers and nine magazines daily. All articles on RH were coded according to their topic, length, and use of research findings. As noted in this brief, after Egyptian print journalists attended briefings on RH issues, their reporting of these issues improved. Health agencies can improve coverage of RH issues by providing a regular flow of accurate information to a broad range of journalists.

Indonesia: Train journalists to write about reproductive health. Population Council, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh2001.1016.

Full text
Abstract:
After government control over the media was liberalized in 1998, Indonesian journalists had a new mandate to explore new issues and foster public debate. Several studies had found evidence that women’s health worsened from 1997–99, yet media coverage of this topic was limited. To increase press coverage of reproductive health (RH) topics, the Population Council conducted an 18-month media project in collaboration with the State Ministry for Women’s Empowerment and other key agencies. The project focused on improving RH knowledge and reporting skills among 22 print journalists. Project staff monitored RH coverage in 22 major newspapers, magazines, and tabloids. After Indonesian journalists received background information and training on RH issues, the quality of their coverage improved. However, as noted in this brief, continued efforts are needed to provide media representatives with ideas for news stories and feature articles and training in use of research findings.
